  1. ... I think she misses her family more than Thailand.

By the way, Los Angeles is said to have the biggest Thai population in the US. I can definitely attest to there being more trappings of Thailand there, such as temples, Thai grocers, and nearly authentic Thai food (just with US produce) than I have seen anywhere else in the US.

The big island of hawaii is a close second to LA

  2. Am I right in thinking this forum has a few thousand members?

That would make many not all, most or even a majority!

I noticed a certain ammount of innuendo in some of the other posts so I had my say

You sound young and idealistic. Cheer up, you'll get over it :o

  3. have you ever heard of market index linked cd's ?

I was studying one today that was linked to the usa nasdaq 100 index.

Even if the index is in the red you do not lose anything of your initial investment.

So, the worst scenario is your flat.

You could invest by setting up an account at a bermuda brokerage if you're living in thailand and just wire money into the bermuda accounts as you go.

To avoid paying taxes at time of maturity, you can set up the linked cd's inside

    ira accounts.

this link explains them better than i can. This in my opinion is the best of both worlds.

First, your guaranteed the initial investment which is fdic insured and your also linking your investment to markets that have the potential to appreciate. granted the qqqq nasdaq 100 is down 4% for the year but it will recover at some point and the s&p index is up for the year about 20%

  4. Don't you find qqq a bit boring to trade?

The ^soxx (semi conductor) index is about to break out of what looks like

    a 52 week trading range

lots of interesting technology out there to invest in...

like a company that says its going to launch solar powered stationary blimps (stratolites)into the stratosphere to broadcast broadband at a fraction of the cost of satellites.

and a pharmacutical co. that is working to jump the bloodstream to brain barrier

with a super memory drug. im watching this one with personal interest since

my short term memory is horrible and getting worse.

  5. Why not trade the market long and short, its pretty easy, funds are a rip

This pretty clearly illustrates the intellectual depth of the answers the original poster has thus far attracted here to his quite sensible question. While I agree that it is possible to make a case that equity funds are frequently an ineffective choice for many investors, 'funds are a rip' is hardly that case.

In any event, Kerryk, if you are a US citizen, the problem you will have is that 'funds that have no connection to the US' will almost certainly not let you invest in them, at least not directly. Since the lack of that connection means that they are not SEC registered, selling to US citizens and residents raises serious problems for them. The only way you can hold such an 'unconnected' fund is through and in the name of a third party -- i.e. a nominee, a bank, or a brokerage house -- and those alternatives are not available (or not practical) unless the amount of money involved is very significant, say well up into the mid-six figure range in USD.

Ive seen the end of quarter "window dressing" and the stock flipping scandal

first hand. Go ahead and take your chances with mutual fund managers if you

want. Does anyone remember the mutual fund scandals a while back?

I really doubt that investing in foreign stock markets would be in the six figures

Your should be able to buy as little or as much foreign stock as you want and

the brokerage, online or not, will have a foreign holding company thats

buys for you. There are a ton of offshore trading companies out there.

    Many are in bermuda

  6. The question, is can an individual farang really be successful and make a lot of money in business here in Thailand? Naturally one hears of so and so opening a bar or running a computer repair service.  I have yet to see one Farang really achieve multi millionaire status, here in Thailand. Why is this so? Ideas and comments please (Please let's exclude those in the entertaiment field)

From an online newspaper in asia:

Ten leading families with close ties to the government altogether controlled over 40 percent of the market capitalization of the Stock Exchange of Thailand, with over 10 percent held by the prime minister's family alone, he was quoted by the Bangkok Post as saying.

    end newspaper quote -----------------------------------------------------------------------

I would think anyone that cut in on the action of these 10 families would pay dearly

for their success. Question is, what cookie jar DON'T they have their hand in...

On a much smaller scale would be trading stocks, bonds online. Or... doing the ebay thing. Now living in thailand doesn't limit you in who you sell to. All you have to

do is know your products well. Know what the current market prices are for those

items and if you see a bargain buy it. Also set up automated searches to notify you

when new items your interested in are listed.

Now here is the tricky part.. since your in thailand you dont want it sent to you because your reselling it to others in the usa or europe. So as soon as the auction ends or simultaneously you list the item with Your BETTER description of the item and all its possible uses at a higher price. When your auction ends and you have a buyer, hopefully, you have them send the item to your buyer and you pocket the

    difference.

you should first check with the seller to see if he would have a problem billing address and shipping addresses being different. If your feedback is good most

    agree.

  7. how can she take you to court if you're in another country

and cannot appear to represent yourself or even be served papers?

i agree with the other gents here. mutual funds are ripoffs.

have you seen the dividend yields on energy trusts in the usa?

    http://finance.yahoo.com/q?s=PVX&d=t

im not sure if europe or asian markets have similar issues traded

but its worth a look because like real estate they're not making any

    more oil and gas.

  8. bakachan, the medium system described above is new under the 10000 $ US you paid for your used system, how does it compare?

It wouldnt be a fair comparison since these panels I got were about 1/2 price of

new at the time (about 10 yrs ago). They were from a demonstration power plant that had put concentrator mirrors on them and literally cooked them brown. However, their output was just a little less than new but they had no idea how long they would last. Here someone posted on the web a picture of the same panels . There were many many sets that were sold.

    http://www.otherpower.com/otherpower_solar_used.html

that 10,000 included the yanmar diesel. My inverter was a trace 1k and I had 2 trace charge controllers for the 2 arrays. My array put out about 800 watts on a cool day and i had 8 huge golf cart batteries bought new. I also had a very very expensive

submersible DC well pump. That was 800 dollars alone.

Another negative to solar is theft. If you have bad neighbors you could come home

and find some solar panels missing. If i installed them in an area that was

remote and or i didnt trust my neighbors, ide drill holes through the frames and

    chain them together.

The reasoning behind buying 12 volt appliances, ceiling fan etc.. was for peak

output times. There is quite a bit of loss with the batteries + inverter so running

them at peak times is like skimming gravy off the top.

  9. your not that far from the power poles. it would definately be cheaper to pay for an extension. i lived many years with a yanmar diesel tractor motor mated to a 5kw

belt driven ac generator that i called very unaffectionaly "the beast" It was LOUD and smelly.

i also installed solar panels, used ones but still expensive to supplement. i had a bank of golf cart batteries that were charged via the solar or the generator. cost was around 10,000 us dollars and i installed everything myself.

whenever i needed to run anything that required more amps than the inverter put out, air conditioner, air compressor, ide crank up the beast.

i had to buy 12 volt appliances, ceiling fan, vacuum cleaner, which were very expensive compared to their ac counterparts and of cheaper quality.

i finally got sick of it and paid 5000 dollars to have power lines put in.

However, it was nice whenever there was a power outage i always had lights.

The area i was in was very mountainous and power outages could last a week or

more because it took crews a long time to get to the area and the trees were thick and fell against the lines constantly.

  10. Yes, I do.

There is no mention of dodgey parts in your link. :D

Talk to the 2 ex drivers on this forum for info or check out pprune.com

    Have fun. :o

I watched a tv documentary on airline safety and they specifically mentioned

china air doing this. In addition to their dismal safety record they are accused

    of counterfeit spare parts.

    from the taipeitimes.com website.

Although very stringent controls exist for the supply of spare aircraft parts, there have been a number of incidents of aeroplane crashes caused by fake components. ... The Far East is commonly pinpointed by the US aviation industry as the problem area," according to a report published by the Organization for Economic Cooperation and Development.

"We are looking at parts that are very critical to flight safety -- hydraulic fittings, brakes, flaps, cockpit instruments and landing gear," MSNBC quoted aviation journalist Tim Van Beveren as saying.

  11. Does anyone know of a good travel agent or website offering cheap BKK-LA or BKK-SEA tickets roundtrip?

China Airlines via Expedia.com. Don't they crash a lot?

their safety record is not good. to cut down on maintenance costs the chinese

reproduce parts such as landing gear and engine parts. there is a reason

why we xray metal parts! :o

  12. I took one of those package tours out to the river kwai in 03 from bkk.

Out in the parking lot i was looking over the bus that we were to go in

and ive got to say ive never seen such a piece of crap bus in my life.

I said to my friend "this thing is going to break down"

I was laughing at the oil pouring out of the a/c unit as it sat in the parking lot.

She said thats just the air conditioner isnt it? I reminded her if the a/c is this bad, the engine/brakes can't be much better. Sure enough it broke down and it was many hours before we got back to bkk.

be sure to check the condition of your bus before you go if your taking a tour bus

and bring mosquito repellant because thats area is a malaria hot spot

  13. there are plenty of foreign banks in thailand. I would check out the rates they offer.

Right now i'm getting 2.9% in my money market account in the us with no minimum

    balance.

To avoid any type of currency fluctuations you could consider new zealand dollars

or swiss franc's. Both are very stable currencies because both countries govt's

have solid balance sheets (no defecits), stable govt's, low terrorism risk and

a higher interest rate than 1%

  14. i usually transfer money using the atm machine itself, not the internet.

my bank here in the states has a new alert service that the user can enable. you can tell it to alert you whenever a transfer over a certain amount or a withdrawl over certain

    amount etc...etc..

the alert will be sent to your email immediately.

it had to have been a key logger that got you because as you say

the bank server logs you out with non-activity.

even malfunctioning atm machines can bite. i once went to one in the

states that had kept someones account open on the screen. Apparently it had swallowed their card and went into some kind of malfunction mode. Anyone

could have withdrawn money up to the daily limit on an atm. :o
