"The escalation follows an airstrike earlier this month that reportedly targeted top Iranian commanders"

Very selective news, airstrike on a embassy. This is the new normal? What would happen with any other country striking an embassy? It could be seen as a declaration of war.

Some rules only apply to certain countries it would seem.

    This contravened The Vienna Convention.

There is nothing even remotely ‘quality’ about Thailand.

They deserve the public defecator and his ilk.

That is the kind of level that they operate at.

Just take a walk down any soi in Bangkok and see the garbage, the filth, the sewers, the pollution, the rats, the scammers etc.

You wouldn’t see this kind of thing in Geneva or Monte Carlo, would you?

    much love!

    BOB.

"...You wouldn’t see this kind of thing in Geneva or Monte Carlo".
You don't see 30C winter weather in those places either!😊

Obviously drunk off his mind (if not drugged). Disgusting but I don't think it's disrespectful - he had no idea what he was doing so respect doesn't come into the equation. No doubt however that the racist/xenophobic mob out there would condemn all foreigners based on this incident.

Thailand really is better without tourists. They drive up prices, overcrowd the place, and give us all a bad name with singular ridiculous incidents like this. My rent has gone up 30% since tourism restarted - it's not much of a dent but it's annoying and overpriced in relation to the rest of the country. Will probably move when my contract ends and no doubt landlord will jack up price again.

They wanted to put up my rent in the UK by 30% last year.

I have never had to have anyone to sign to say they have known me for several years and I've lost count of how many passports that is.

A passport that has been reported stolen would immediately be cancelled so you're right, it does seem somewhat incredulous. But there is one possible explanation, that the real 'Peter Smith' never reported it missing in the first place. If he wasn't much of a travelling man he may never have noticed.

It used to be someone that you had known for 2 years, and that they were of some 'standing', like a judge or a doctor or JP.

I have no reservations whatsoever to call myself a cheap charlie when it comes to getting a beer in a pub...

The Old English Happy hour is rather excellent IMO....

Indeed - point in hand above....  OMF usually doesn't gauge the temperature so poorly in his comments...

Its great if you want a good burger (opposite - Easy Burger) and a couple of beers...  But, its doesn't have the same 'warm-up' vibe as the old place....   Its more of a 'destination' location now, where you go there, if you are going there, not passing through for one or two before getting led astray by friends....

The old place (when Cheap Charlies was on Soi 11) used to make me chuckle... they'd have that plastic chain demarcating the area we had to stay within lest other bar / restaurant owners would get angry if we strayed outside and blocked the passage of potential (non-existent) customers... It must have been a lot of hassle keeping all owners of neighbouring but less busy places happy because of how busy your 'cheap-dive' bar is !!!...

It had character and the decor has been transfered in an attempt to maintain that...     though, like every old timer, nothing is as good as it 'once was'...    Londoner and Burbon St. case in hand...

They also moved The Dubliner, but it just wasn't the same as the original.

So you buy "expensive" air tickets, then can be bothered wasting your time going to your bank, queueing, waiting for cash, then visiting the airline office, queueing and wasting more time to hand over the cash, wait for it to be counted, to save 2,000 baht? Seems your time is not that valuable.

I just book directly on the airline website for my "expensive" ticket, pay with my credit card, then pay the full amount in my bill cycle and don't have any added fees - you should try it.

Even if there was no alternative to your dinosaur, queueing, time wasting method, and someone said I can save you all that time for 2,000 baht I would take that in an instant.

There was virtually no queueing, and I had absolutely nothing else to do. So why not spend 30-60 minutes, my time wasn't valuable in any way at all, I had nothing whatsoever to do all day other than sit around and BS with friends. It also meant that I got a bit of exercise walking to the bank and back.

I've known of guys walking quite a way to a different exchange bureau to probably save 30 Baht.

I think its also illegal in Thailand too....   But that doesn't stop them...

    At least its more honest.....

I wanted to max out 1.2MB my credit card on a car so I could get loads of points (which = airmiles - I was paying in cash anyway)...  unfortunately, the dealership wanted to to take 3% extra for the card feeds....

In other area's that allow for card payment I suspect they've added the 3% already, even if you are paying cash.

When I used to buy expensive air tickets I would sometimes go to the bank to get the cash and save the 2,000 - 3,000'ish Baht card fee.

There is huge danger in abandoning cash for cards produced by private firms or by government. You will soon be held to ransom by huge fees and or taxes you don't understand that you will be paying. When you complain you will be told, "you have no rights, we are not a bank, we can add fees in any way we see fit, and if you complain again we'll cut off your credit, so shut yer gob!!!!" Yes it would be nice to have the choice of cash or credit so if the credit card company screws you, you can always use cash. VISA/MC have had a campaign for years in the US and other large markets, trying to persuade businesses not to accept cash, and only to accept cards (you can clearly see where that is heading). And governments are only too eager to help, they benefit from reduced tax fraud.

I was told years ago at school that any sum owed can be settled in cash because cash is always legal tender....in some places it is not! Caveat emptor.

In Thailand it's possible for a vendor to charge you 2 or 3% for using plastic, in the UK they're not allowed to do that, AFAIK.

    Absolutely Correct !
More and More countries are going Digital which is enabling them to dictate to the customers anything they want.

Withdraw money at Will from your account, Parking fine, Speeding ticket { without proof in most cases },

Control of the Masses, who are without the Masses of money needed to argue  !

It was as long ago as the 1980's in the UK that people could no longer insist on the right to be paid their wages in cash.

Quite true. Cash is quicker, and not all shops/services have card readers. (Our business doesn't.)

Try paying food panda with a debit card.

OK yes, I'm just mentioning how it is in the UK now. Pretty much EVERYWHERE now has the card reader machines. I do still keep some coins for a few things like parking ticket machines (in the glovebox) and where I used to live, the washing machine. Other than that, it's 100% plastic. (I even pay the bus fare with plastic!).

The story was that it was started by four who were tired of being unable to physically get into Jools between 5 and 8. They opened Chequers and over time one bought the other three out. Never knew any names, I remember Peter who was manager when I first arrived and who recently appears  occasionally.

Is that Peter that ran the Old Dutch? White haired Brit guy.

I think this is the one that had car license plates on the walls and was owned by a Norwegian and later run or owned by his wife. Been a long time, though.

I remember it being there 18 years ago when I lived off Soi 22, and someone had said that it had been there for a very long time before that.

Chequers, Sukhumvit Soi 4. Proper British pub (although quite a few yanks and global nationalities visit). Always decent conversation. Happy Hour until 7pm. Tiger draught pint at 100 Baht (other deals too). Nice service staff. Food good too. Major sports events screened too. Sit at the front for interesting people watching as the soi comes to life as the sun sets.

I used to like the full English breakfast in Chequers. I seldom used it as a boozer, but would have if I had lived closer.
