  1. I'm in the course of purchasing a used sports car and I'm thinking of having it repainted, something like yellow or orange (original color is black).

I know that the car papers need to be updated at the Transportation Department.  Does anyone know how much this costs and what the process is?  Someone (without knowledge) said it was prohibitively expensive, which is why so few cars are repainted despite new cars being available only in black/white/grey for the most part.

Not sure if it makes a difference, but the car is a BMW (original sold through the dealership in Bangkok)

  2. I've now ordered this: https://www.lazada.co.th/products/i1664010854-s4643318654.html?urlFlag=true&mp=1&spm=spm%3Da2o4m.order_details.item_title.1

It comes with a True Move H sim-card, the terms of which I don't know yet, but hopefully the offered package is sensible for the purpose.

I've read online that these trackers generate 1-10 Mb of data per month (I suppose you can set in the app at what intervals you want to receive the location).

    Let's see ...

  3. This is helpful, thanks.  I'm not sure how much data the tracker actually uses, I would think it depends on how often you query the current position of the car.  From what I've read online, 1-10 Mb per month appears a good estimate.  I'll go to the local AIS or DTAC shop and see what they recommend.

  4. I'm planning to get a GPS tracker for my car, so I can locate it at anytime (when I lend it out).  These trackers require a SIM card in order to send the location info to my phone.  I wonder what is the most economical SIM card and data package for this?  I don't know how much data the tracker generates/sends per month.  I don't really care which provider (AIS/True/...) it is, they all have good coverage in my area.

Anyone with experience in this matter, please let me know!

    Thanks.

  5. I'm having a super frustrating experience trying to get a WP3 from the Suratthani Provice Labor Department.

Labor Departments around Thailand started issuing WP3's again around July 20, after stopping in late March.  My lawyer submitted my application around July 22, and I'm still waiting for the WP3 to be issued.  Normally, it takes about 3-5 days, for me it's been over 4 weeks now.  The form has been sitting unsigned on the Labor Dept. boss's desk for over a week, and she's just not signing it.  My lawyer calls everyday, sometimes twice, nothing is happening.

I personally know 2 people who got their WP3's in July within 3 days (in Bangkok), they're back to Thailand already.  But Surat seems to be different.  My daughter was supposed to start school on August 24, she's now missing that because of the Labor Dept. tardiness.  Very, very frustrating. I'm actually starting to wonder if it's really just tardiness, or if it's intentional.

Has anyone recently (since July) successfully obtained a WP3 from the Labor Dept in Suratthani?  Can you please share your experience (how long did it take? anything special you noticed?)

    Thanks!

  6. OK, to summarize:

    * Dependent on WP-holder with 1 Thai staff: Wife+daughter get 90-day extension everytime I do, and we all do border bounce (ignoring amnesty)

    * Student+guardian: Daughter gets 1-year extension, wife still gets only 90-day extension (and has to border bounce)? [Assuming money in TH bank account]

According to info from school, the guardian would also get 1-year extension (with money in account)....?

  7. We (family of 3) are getting ready for applying for CoE and accompanying visa. I'm getting a WP3 which will allow me to apply for a Non-B visa and eventually get my work permit.

My wife and daughter have two options:

    * Apply for Non-O based on being my dependents

    * Daughter applies for Non-ED (student visa), and wife applies for Non-O based on being our daughter's guardian (daughter is 9 years old)

Our daughter will attend a private Int'l School in Thailand. She qualifies for a Non-ED visa, but she can also attend school on basically any visa (e.g. Elite). What I know from the school is that with the Non-ED/Non-O (student+guardian) daughter+wife have to do 90-day reporting, but they don't actually have to do it in person (which is good b/c daughter doesn't miss a day of school for this bogus).

What about if they got Non-O visas based on being my dependents? Would the same thing apply? Or would they have to do 90-day border bounces like me with my Non-B (once amnesty ends)? Is there any advantage to the student+guardian option, compared to the "dependents of WP holder" option?

As for my company, I own 49%, and there will be one Thai employee.  Not sure if this makes a difference for my wife+daughter, but AFAIK it means I have to do border-bounces every 90 days.

richard burrows said I can get the non b inside Thailand and that “ his school concerts tourist to non b visas all the time” but clearly this isn’t the case for none schools / BOI / Foreign companies set up here looking to hire foreigners.

Richard Barrow also said that the consulate in Toronto is issuing Non-B's without a WP3: https://twitter.com/RichardBarrow/status/1279048857662312448

In fact, I was told in the past that the WP3 isn't a strict requirement for a Non-B, and there were some consulates that didn't require them.  However, I would also need a CoE right now, and the MFA might well require a WP3 for issuing that ...

They probably are not issuing WP3's since they think nobody can enter the country.

Have you asked the embassy if they will accept them to get a certificate of entry. If yes maybe you could get something from them that can be shown to the work permit office.

Embassy requires WP3.  They're not very flexible or common-sensical.  If I get the WP3, then I'll get the CoE, else not, so I am told.

I hear from the Embassy that there are no WP3 yet, the only one way is to ask for a permission to employ foreigners at the international Ministry of foreign affairs which will repace at the moment the WP3!

The issuing of this permission is very selective at the moment as the news regulations said.

How do you ask for this permission at the MFA? And where can I see these new regulations? My lawyer probably isn't aware of this, so if I can point him in the right direction that would help

  11. My lawyer was ready to submit all docs to the Dept of Labour (in Samui/Suratthani) in late March, when he got the reply that they're not issuing WP3's until further notice.  Since then, he's checked multiple times but they haven't started issuing them again yet.  I've also made contact with other folks in other provinces (BKK) who have the same issue.  Some people though claim it's not true that they're not issuing WP3's, but I have yet to meet someone who has actually obtained one since April.

So here's my question:  IF YOU HAVE OBTAINED A WP3 SINCE APRIL 2020, PLEASE REPLY TO THIS THREAD STATING THE DATE AND LOCATION WHERE YOUR WP3 WAS ISSUED.  THANK YOU.

The background (for those interested) is this:  My wife, daughter, and I were planning to move to Samui from Europe this summer.  At this point, my daughter and wife could get CoE's and student/guardian visas.  But you can get only one guardian visa per student, and we have only one kid.  So I have to get a work permit, it's the only way.  But the embassies won't issue a Non-B (and CoE) unless you have a WP3.

  12. Yes, of course Non-B for me, not Non-O.  Non-O would be for my wife's guardian visa.

The prospect of having to go into quarantine for 2 weeks isn't wonderful but if that's the only way then we'll do it.  I assume that as a family we could all share a room in the quarantine facility.

Regarding the WP-3 (which was the real topic of my query), my lawyer's office informed me that the officer at the Labor Dpt told them that they don't issue WP-3's right now.  My lawyer keeps inquiring there every few weeks on my behalf, and the answer is always the same.  My company & lawyer are in Samui, so I assume this is the Suratthani branch of the Labor Dpt.  I don't know if we are bound to apply at this branch (probably yes), but if you know for a fact that other branches are issuing WP-3's that would be very useful info I could pass to my lawyer.

  13. I was planning to move from Europe to Thailand with my family this summer, which is obviously becoming a difficult undertaking.  The plan was for me to get a work permit (through the Thai company of which I'm a shareholder), my daughter to get a student visa (she will attend an international school), and my wife to get a guardian visa (for accompanying our underage daughter).

Right now, work permit holders and people having been granted authority to work in Thailand may still enter the country (via one of the rare repatriation flights). I've asked at the local Thai consulate, and they confirmed to me that they would indeed issue me a Non-O visa to enter TH if I provided them all the necessary paperwork.  The tricky thing now is that apparently the Labor Department has not been issuing any WP-3 forms since late March, and my TH lawyer has no idea when they will start again.  Has someone else found himself in this situation, and has obtained more information as to when issuance of WP-3's might restart?

PS. I'm fully aware that as of now, my wife and daughter wouldn't be able to "accompany" me to Thailand on the Non-O, should the latter be issued.  But getting one of us over there would be start...

  14. When this topic came up two or three years ago, it was suggested to look in Phuket for Hobbie Kayaks... (perhaps google search?)

The local shop you mention, did not seem slightest bit interested in sales or service at that time... their other location near Lamai, I think is now closed....

There is another brand that is quite common here, at many resorts, Brand name not coming to me ... but perhaps ask at a place that has them for rent, they may tell you!

I have a set of paddles, if anyone interested in buying! wink.png PM me!

Like I'm gonna go to Phuket to buy a kayak? I'm in Samui!

  15. That's pretty crazy! That house was built by the owner of Nikki Beach for himself, though he no longer lives there. I believe it is rented out now. He build the Nikki Beach "correctly", but failed when he built his own house. Very obviously the house doesn't respect the 10m rule (nor the one-storey rule). Totally insane!

I can't wait to see the December pictures. I think they will imply that it is impossible to build something safe on the land of those dilapidated houses. You'd have to pile up so much soil underneath that you'll run foul of the 6m-high-rule. Perhaps that's why those ruins are still standing on the nicest beach on the island...

  16. I do however remember when I went there during storm+extreme high tide a few years back, that glass villa entire ground floor was flooded in about 1 foot water.

    attachicon.gif1405124043215.jpg

This is SUPER helpful, thank you so much. Can't wait to see the December pictures. About what time did you go there today? Lowest tide was around 8:45am...

Just one question: Is the one in your pic above the one you mean by " glass villa"? So this one would actually flood during a storm in December?? If so, it was built at least 2m too low.

  17. Yes, the houses I am talking about are just 2 or 3 "doors" down from the house with the "boat". You can see the big white one with the glass front in the background of your picture. Here's a picture of the ones I'm talking about, you can see the one with the "boat" in the back.

    post-181519-0-49717000-1402372396_thumb.

So it appears that the people who built the big white one, as well as the Baan Phulay (between "mine" and the "boat", see the red triangle in my picture) are crazy! Their walls are not nearly high enough to protect against the tide in case of a storm. And yet their houses are still standing. Do you know what height of wave one would have to "budget" for in Lipa Noi? That is, what is the highest ever measured?

  18. The level of water goes right up 50cm against the concrete wall at Nikki Beach, and further north there's another house with high walls and that place I had to walk on their wall because the water was over 1m deep during extreme high. During low tide season (such as now), you can comfortably walk on the beach in front of those concrete walls.

Wow, this is SUPER helpful, thank you. I actually haven't been to Lipa Noi in the winter, so this is exactly the info I was looking for.

Now I wonder about the other houses around there which don't have a high wall. There is the big white one on the northern end of the stretch of ruins (built by the owner of Nikki Beach), which has a glass wall about 1.5m high - that's no protection! And at the southern end of the stretch of ruins there is the Baan Phulay with a wall about 50cm high - again not enough protection. What did you notice about these houses when you walked along the beach in the winter?
