  1. Great. All the new rules written to ensure one man do not return to politics. Why not just spell out his name in the new constitution.

really, I read that it will keep all offenders past and present and relatives out of politics - which is a good thing

also financial transparency and powers to enforce abuse - gets my vote also

also taking away the ability for government to appoint/sack/sideline senior civil servants - good (helps with checks and balances)

The only thing I see not yet addressed is future charter amendments - either by referendum or at least a 2/3 majority in both houses - that will ensure that any future changes are not railroaded through for any single parties devious agenda like the last government tried to do

Also scrap immunity while in office - sets a bad president - nobody is above the law

I see an effort to try and curb corruption and abuse of power both before - during and after election - all good

"that will ensure that any future changes are not railroaded through for any single parties devious agenda like the last government tried to do"

Presumably you are still harping on about the Amnesty Bill? If that is the case, one of those future changes would have to be able to stop a certain political party from throwing their toys out of the pram, boycotting a vote and walking out of parliament before that vote is taken.

How do you legislate for that?...........................................coffee1.gif

  2. General Prayuth seems to be ignoring some of the glaring inconsistencies in the application of justice in Thailand. Seems that this guy, like some many before him, is just going to walk free. $97,000 to be allowed to escape justice while the elderly couple found picking mushrooms in a national park got 10 years. Justice Thai style.

What does this case have to do with Prayuth?

The only connection is symbolic. If Prayuth is serious about dealing with inequality...and he says he is...he would instruct his underlings to deal with this case. As you know, it has caused much angst among Thais , with many feeling that the rich and well connected can get away with anything. Is Prayuth part of the solution to that issue or just another problem? He will never have credibility unless he starts to act without fear or favour.

Do you want Prayuth to re-open ALL cases where there has been some injustice? How far do you want him to go back?

The only connection is people trying to link Prayuth to everything that is bad in Thailand.

Well someone has to take over the "everything bad in Thailand happens because of Thaksin" role..........................................coffee1.gif

  3. Don't think this list MP's thing is a good idea for you end up with people who have no right or qualification to be in parliament, they have no loyalty to the people only to the party and would never get elected if they stood as a candidate.

No doubt there would be the argument that qualified people who would be a great benefit to the country can get an automatic entry to power without having to go through an election but in practice this has not happened.

If there are such qualified people then cabinet posts are always available that suit their expertise, as cabinet ministers and their deputies don't have to come from sitting MP's, this obviously doesn't apply to opposition parties however there is nothing to stop a shadow cabinet being formed outside parliament.

There will be few posters on here who cant easily put names to several of those in the previous house who were only there as some sort of a reward for party loyalty and who were in fact useless appendages if not worse.

  4. Social media is a direct threat to the existence of newspapers, and every newspaper has the same agenda -- to make money by restricting information and supporting one side or another to have captive client supporters.

The number of bogus stories in mainstream media is easily equal to hoaxers on social media, the latter of which creates a false sense of validation for the former. Here's the illogical argument implied in the article above -- "News can be a hoax in social media, therefore social media is unreliable." This is like saying, "Men fake their own deaths every day; therefore men never really die." Just because something can be hoaxed does NOT mean similar events never happen. It just means some people will lie -- and no one needs a news expert to tell us that.

This is a part of the reason we see Wikileak's creator being cornered and fried alive, and protests in the US being shut down from a "lack of legal permits" (and which is blatantly Unconstitutional). Anyone with a brain will cross-check facts and come to a reasoned conclusion.

This is counter-productive to controlling the populations of the world.

    GOOD!

The number of bogus stories in mainstream media is easily equal to hoaxers on social media, the latter of which creates a false sense of validation for the former.

Indeed, even the great leader has fallen prey to this just recently.

BANGKOK: -- Thai Prime Minister Prayut Chan-O-Cha Tuesday threatened to bar ousted premier Yingluck Shinawatra from travelling abroad, a day after the publication of her first media interview since May's coup.

BANGKOK - The Bangkok Post has pulled an article in which a reporter claimed to have interviewed former Prime Minister Yingluck Shinawatra.

    http://www.thaivisa.com/forum/topic/779395-bangkok-post-reporter-retracts-interview-with-yingluck/#entry8721738

Unfortunately, with the power he has bestowed upon himself, this can have far reaching consequences, as illustrated above.................................coffee1.gif

  6. Majority ... you know ... 48%.

Did you bitch about majorities all the time back in your old country, or did you understand the rules along with the majority of sensible voters, that the political party that gets more votes than any other political party in an election gets the first chance to form a government?...................................coffee1.gif

How does forming government suddenly make 48% a majority?

You're the one who is obsessed with the word, not me. If you get bent out of shape every time some says majority when they mean that a political party got more votes than the other political parties, it's not my problem. Is it really worth repeating ad nauseam on a forum?

Relax, live a little, get a life, whatever applies........................coffee1.gif

  7. Despite the terminology, I believe they are advocating removal of the party list system, something I have long supported.

This system has allowed scum like the Shinawatras to gain power using their wealth to buy popular local politicians, appoint unelectable cronies like Chalerm, and reward their criminal lackeys.

Did Thaksin create this system or was it in play before he was even born?

My recollection is it, along with the redrawing of some electoral boundaries, was introduced in the wake of the 2006 coup as an attempt to boost the number of seats the Democrat's could win due to their power base being predominantly in more densely populated urban regions such as Bangkok. Happy to be corrected if that wasn't the case.

You're on the right lines. It was abhisit who amended the organic act on the election of MP's just before the 2011 Election but that was OK because it was the "democrat" party. When the PTP tried to amend the constitution, they were accused of, and found guilty of, "overthrowing the democratic regime", section 68 of the now rejected constitution......................................coffee1.gif

Did you bitch about majorities all the time back in your old country, or did you understand the rules along with the majority of sensible voters, that the political party that gets more votes than any other political party in an election gets the first chance to form a government?...................................coffee1.gif

And abuse power and break all possible laws?

You understand checks and balances, right? Now detail what abuse of power the PTP apparently employed along with a list of all possible laws they broke without any retribution via the constitutional and administrative courts (and please do not think that I regard their actions as independent and unbiased in any way) and then I may take your comments seriously and not regard them as just pandering to the usual suspects on here.

  10. She's using a figure of speech. She is not saying that a real gun was pointed at her. What is with some of you people.

How many Thai "up country" people do you think understand the difference between a figure of speech and speaking literally?

My mother in law still refuses to accept Yingluck could possible have done anything wrong. Father in law and rest of family now just shake their heads knowingly. Not her fault - she simply can't understand the political machinations and complexities and has had years of "Thaksin and Shins good, others bad" drummed into her by red shirts, red radio, village headman, etc. Many of the intended audience of this article will be the same. It puts a picture of poor brave Yingluck being forcibly removed from office under armed threat whilst she was valiantly trying to keep in control. And yes, some will be naive enough to believe it.

That's hardly the point is it. Here we have a supposedly educated General who appointed himself PM pretending ( I can only hope he is) to not know that Yingluck was using a metaphor.

Prayut hit out at her remarks, saying to reporters: "Who pointed the gun at her?"

That is disingenuous at best but otherwise a patronising remark aimed at reporters who do know what is a metaphor and what isn't. If O'cha come across without his trademark defensive approach to what he regards as criticism he might be taken a bit more seriously by those who still have enough braincells to see through the hagiographic haze...............................but I don't hold out much hope coffee1.gif

  12. Nice to see the Yingluck name still bringing out all the misogynistic comments here on TVF .

She has held her pride and dignity right throughout and has carried herself well despite the enormous pressure on her.

If this one headline can rattle the few on here to such an extent then imagine the shivers it must send done the spine of the junta.

No wonder the general is always unhappy as he will never enjoy the popularity of the former elected PM.

She's achieved a lot more in her life both in business and in politics than the sorry lot on here with their bar stool comments.

If I were Yingluck I would be scared of you. You sound like an obsessed man. smile.png

And by the way, she has achieved NOTHING in personal business and politics. In personal business she ONLY held positions in her brother's companies, and in politics she really screwed up. Corruption increased and the farmers had no money. The shins managed to fool you too I see. Yes I know they are good at that. You are not the only one who fell for their propaganda.

    Yes, absolutely NOTHING in business

In Yingluck’s time running the company, SC Asset shares have risen 101 percent, compared with a 45 percent increase in Thailand’s benchmark SET Index. The SET has gained 41 percent in the past 12 months, the best performance among Asia’s 15 biggest markets.

  13. If he could only teach everyone how to spend 1.2 billion whilst only having 300 million ion assets there would be no need for corruption.

Now be fair, he is an equal half partner in that venture so is not responsible for paying all the 1.2 Billion baht, just the mere 0.6 Billion baht.................................coffee1.gif

  15. stat088 post # 18.

I have met and talked with Yingluck. I thought she was nice. I think she would be a good social worker.

I am not involved in politics and don't choose sides.

As a child in the late 1950's in England I met Albert Pierrepoint who was a relative of one of my fathers friend. I though ''uncle Albert '' was a nice bloke too.

One could have supposed that he (uncle Albert) was a social worker too.whistling.gif

  16. The F1 race in Thailand next year is still to proceed right?

TBF, having the F1 which travels around the globe is probably a distinct possibility in the coming years should Red Bull continue to have participate and have a measure of success.

Not sure what the high society types from around the world will make of the facilities, F&B, accommodation provision etc in Buriram though.

Not to mention health care provision for drivers.

If a certain member of the Red Bull family is involved, it's not the drivers that need health care provision................................................coffee1.gif

  17. Those storm troopers started off as a street thug militia, used to enforce their party's will and silence dissent. To ensure only their voice was heard.

    Sound familiar.

Am I saying that PT and their stormtroopers were anywhere on the level of the evil your picture shows. No I'm not, that's ridiculous.

However there were many amongst their number who saw violence and the silencing of opposition as perfectly acceptable.

    Thugs, street militia, stormtroopers.

    Choose your term.

    They all apply.

    Sound familiar.

    No, why should it?

    Nope.

    Relevant enough for you?

What am I saying, of course it's not.

I've always been clear on why I despise the UDD and those who led them.

    Intolerance and violence.

  20. What this article and Gen. Prawit neglect to mention is that O'cha is taking along his new head of peace negotiations, General Aksara Kerdpol. It takes an inspired leader to nominate an Army General to lead your peace talks with the Muslim separatists, especially considering the "history" the RTA has with their dealings in the south. Presumably the civilian Thawil who was reinstated in May by order of the Administrative Court despite having a mandatory retirement date of September, was deemed not skilled enough in peace negotiations, unlike the General............................coffee1.gif

Well here we are, 2007 referendum deja vu

General Lertrat Ratanavanich, Constitution Drafting Committee spokesman, allayed fears that the charter drafting process would be marred by protests, saying the majority of the country supported the move to write the new constitution.

"If there is not a new charter, there will not be an election and the country will not overcome our deadlock. We must push for reform and the new charter, he said.

the majority of the country supported the move to write the new constitution.

Really? When did they ask? Notice he clarified that position in his next sentence. You will support the new charter or there will be no election. Now where and when has that been heard before?

    Junta Constitution 2007 Referendum

Government officials have gone to pains to link plans for a real election with asuccessful referendum. Last week Defense Minister Boonrawd Somtas told reporters that an election “can take place only if the new constitution passes the referendum.” The 17 million baht that the government has already spent on advertising to encourage a Yes vote has also linked the referendum to an election, implying that a No will simply mean longer military rule. What’s more, coup leader Sonthi Boonyaratglin has reportedly ordered soldiers in all regions “to publicize the charter to residents.”

So fabie why are you mentioning 2007, this is 2014, different year, different song.

Or perhaps your point is that you want everything in Thailand to be the same, forever and forever... massive corruption continues, false claims about democracy from a party which was actually a dictator, poor unaware folks in Esan told that their village is now 'officially' red regardless of their own opinions, also told to attend democracy school to hear nothing more then hate speeches, the trough / rape of taxpayers funds continues forever, lack of equal justice, scaly incapable politicians fools running ruining the country, environmental hearings a total sham with the richest politician in Thailand saying people who object are rubbish, massive nepotism whereby murder turns to a job for the bully boy son, etc etc etc etc etc....... and all with zero conscience.

Strange values you have fabie, but then again nice lesson materials to teach my kids what's wrong.

You (and others) completely missed the point didn't you? I refer to the past coup and it's ramifications specifically as a reference point to compare with the activities of the latest junta's actions. They're the ones repeating the past, not me. They didn't learn then and they still haven't learnt, neither have you by the sound of it.....................................coffee1.gif

  22. Someone did that to me, I'd give them a smack on the nose. Whoever it was angry.png

A smack on the nose is as disrespectful as a pat on the head. So through your actions you would be lowering yourself to their standards and indicating it is acceptable to do that.

That is why reform is needed. If someone does something disrespectful one should not do something disrespectful back.

What is he doing? There is definitely something wrong with him, evolutionary speaking he is a throwback, from the shallow end of the gene pool, without a doubt.

Anyway, jpeg, a westerner, giving his opinion on what he would do if someone acted towards him in the same manner as the "most popular PM in the last decades (djjamie © 2014)" he would give that person a smack on the nose, and that, in djjamies world, justifies the need for reform of the Thai political system.....................

The car crash poster is back with a vengance..........................................coffee1.gif

Ahhh, the rubics cube is back and I notice I am no longer on your ignore list…Thanks mate.

What is he doing? Prayut was being disrespectful to a journalist. What was the reaction? Being disrespectful back!

If I was to denounce someone that broke the law because breaking the law was wrong I would not break the law to make it right. Breaking the law is wrong. I assume you agree that breaking the law is wrong?

Do you need me to draw a diagram so you understand this or did I not "decode" your post correctly?

Comprehension not your strong point is it? Read your own post again and then try and explain to yourself (no-one else is listening) how you came to this conclusion in reply to jpeg's post. To misuse one of your stock sayings, is that "PTP djjamie logic"?

You're still on my ignore list (thankfully) - but do you even understand the "car crash" post analogy? Don't answer, I already know.
