  1. Payment

    I notice on the instructions

"You must ensure that you have checked with your card provider that your card is valid, for this international transaction, and that adequate funds are available."
Does anyone know if the local bank cards can be used to pay this sterling charge?

I always thought they could only be used locally.

Does anyone know if you can pay cash to the Bangkok office if you don't have a credit card or a UK bank account?

    Confused!!!!!

  2. Just an update on the Teak House near Mae Fah Luang.

    Similar experience to Joel Barlow.

Wife and I drove in at 11.45 for lunch(didn't demand immediate service)

They told us at the door

in no uncertain terms that they didn't open until 12

    Grudgingly offered us a coffee

We left and went up to the next place

Sweets and Stuff I think it is called where the staff were

    very welcoming-they got our money

  3. HI

I have been teaching at MFU for 5 years

I used to travel from Chiang Rai

but 1 hour each way by motorcycle in the rainy season

    is no fun

Now I rent a large bungalow with a big garden 5 mins from MFU for

    4,500/month

Another teacher is in the process of relocating at the minute and I went with him this week to

    look for places

Found a few really nice places just north of MFU(he is waiting on feedback on prices)

Your kid can go to school by school bus( most schools have them)

If I can assist don't hesitate to contact me

    Welcome to Thailand

  4. Is it true that a new "sports bar" has opened near the army camp on the way to Chiang Rai beach?

Does this mean that live rugby matches will now be available ?

    Grateful for any information.

  5. Hi all...

am planning a little trip and would love some thoughts from folks in the know...

I am planning on crossing back into Thailand at Chiang Khong and then I'd like to get to Pai.

How long does it take to get to Chiang Rai from Chiang Khong (are there lots of regular bus departures?)? From Chiang Rai I was thinking of renting a car to drive to Pai, spend a few days there and then drive to Chiang Mai to return the car - I need to find a bigger rental company that will allow me to do this... I would have liked to skip Pai and make it to MHS but I don't think I will have time. I will be in Chiang Khong on the afternoon/evening of a Thursday and then fly out of Chiang Mai the following Tuesday... thoughts or suggestions would be awesome!

    Thanks

    HI MA,

CK - CR allow 1-2 hrs

Just did the CR -Pai-MHS- CM-CR trip a couple of weeks ago

    over 3 days

Left CR at about 2.30 pm

Drove to Pai via CM -arrived about 7.30 p.m

First leg averaged over 100 Km/hr

Last hour was in the dark and quite hairy and slow going

If you are new to Thai driving -not advised to drive this road at night

    Better start early

Southern route from CM to MHS via Hot is much faster going

first part very fast roads nearer MHS the usual bends

    4-5 hrs driving

Pai to MHS slow but beautiful

  6. For some it may seem to be a daft couple of questions to ask, but there's always a reason for the madness. :D

We're planning to visit the Chiang Rai/ Mae Sai area for around 5 or 6 days in April and would like to rent an automatic scooter in either town. It's not important whether we can rent it in CR or MS, as we'll make whichever town is best, as our destination (we're still in the planning stages!), but will be arriving by VIP bus. :D

Anybody know of any good rental shops? If so, could you help with a street name or location - and prices. Ordinary motorbikes are out of the question - I've never learned the manual gear thing, so it has to be a Mio, Click or the like. A rental shop near to the Bus Terminal would be a great thing, but really any rental shop is okay. We'd like to drive the CR/MS/Chiang Saen route with a few diversions along the way.

You may think "Yes, of COURSE there are rental shops!" Believe me when I say that that we've previously been to some larger towns, where you just COULDN'T rent scooters! Mind you, times change and maybe those towns do now have scooter rentals.

Recently, we visited Chiang Mai and (thanks to you TV members), we'd been able to get some good advice and it was a dead easy job to go directly to a good rental shop. There's nothing worse that arriving in a strange town and having to spend hours scouting around for a rental shop, especially if there isn't one. :D

Oops! - nearly forgot : according to our map, some of the Mai Sai roads seem to slightly run over the border and back into Thailand again. Is this just our map, or does this, in fact, occur? And is there any problem involved, seeing as one might just leave one country and enter another - without being aware of it. :D

Any advice would be most helpful

Cheers and thanks for your precious time :o:D

    Hi scooterboy,

I was just checking this yesterday in CR as I have friends arriving in the next few weeks

Scooters for hire at the coffee shop/Internet cafe next to the Honda dealership

on Rattanakhet Rd just north of j/o Phaholyothin Rd

    Prices range from 150 baht/day for basic to 300 baht/day for a

larger automatic (she quoted me 1,500 baht for a week's hire for that one)

If you don't know CR -

If you are on the main tourist drag (o/s Swensens,Pizza place etc)

walk up the main road to the big junction

go straight over and it's about 100metres on the left

    can't miss it

I am sure there are many more places(maybe more competitive) but that one is handy

  7. Hi sillybilly,

Sorry for late info but I haven't been online for a few days

I did the trip at Christmas

No problem going across the border at Chiang Kong

I stayed at a guest house in Chiang Kong (The Chiang Khom guesthouse)

arrived afternoon, gave them our passports, next morning at 8 a.m. they had our passports with paperwork done, necessary boat tickets also and car to boat pick up.

They also booked ahead for accommodation at Pak Beng

(the overnight stop on the way by slow boat to Luang Prabang)

However pre-booking not necessary as plenty of places and cheaper if you

do it when you arrive (same in Luang Prabang - loads of places to stay)

I met lots of backpackers who did all the visa stuff themselves in Chiang Kong,

wife and I just preferred the convenience

Lao immigration just opposite Thai immigration across the river

and get tuk tuk to slow boat over the hill from immigration office

    in Laos

By the way carry a cushion for the boat trip (no joke)

6-8 hours on hard wooden bench ain't fun for two days

and if you opt for fast speedboat as I did on return journey you better not be

6 ft tall and over 200 lbs (like me) as they expect you to

sit in the squat position in a 24 inch space for 6 hours

I ended up on my back in the front seat with my legs stuck over the front

Having said that the trip was a tremendous experience and scenery down the Mekong gorges well worth it and Luang Prabang the most tranquil place I've ever been

The 4 day trip there and back cost us about 8,000 baht for two most of that on boat fares as you must pay the foreign price - openly displayed Lao price / foreign price

Wife Thai and had to pay foreign price too

If you want to cruise in comfort both ways with a beer and all arranged - travel agent in Chiang Rai quoted 4 times the price

    Have fun

    tung tsz :o

PM me if you want any further details

    Hi me again,

Have a look at this site if you haven't been to Laos before

  9. Hi Guys,

I am applying for a tourist visa in Hong Kong

I am a 30 yr HK resident with HK ID card and a long term g/f in Thailand

The Thai consulate refuses a non-immigrant visa point blank

as I am not applying to go on business

They also say only a single entry tourist visa is possible

From postings here I got the impression that for a price

I can get my single entry tourist changed to a multiple entry

    at Immigration in Thailand

    Am I right or wrong?

I am happy to pay for my visa and any amendments but I have personal

affairs in HK which may entail a couple of return visits in the next 3 mths at short notice

which could invalidate a single entry after only a few weeks stay

Before anyone asks - I am of good character, stable background in HK etc but

HK Thai consulate seem very set in their ways and independent

(They even told a friend recently that he needed 2 million baht

for a retirement visa - not 800,000 baht)

    Any advice appreciated

  10. I can't believe that none of you guys has recommended

Pu Chi Fa and surroundings, especially at this time of year

    for scenery around Chiang Rai

Also there is a new lookout above Thoeng

with tremendous views over that area

    just below the temple

The elephant camp at Ban Ruam Rit

is well worth a visit a is any trip down the river

As to live entertainament I am sure the

Inn Com entertainment centre is still there

The disco blow your mind speakers are bad but

in between that the shows with live musicians and

the cracking girls are very good

  11. :D I am planning to go to Luang Prabang during the half term holiday (16-28/02) and would like to know the cheapest way to get there. I have checked out Thai but they only go as far as Vientiane. I could then go with Lao air or air Laos the rest of the way. In the back of my mind are some niggling memories of someone saying that Laos air was very dangerous. Could anyone set me right? :D

I was in Luang Prabang just before Xmas but I went by boat from Chiang Kong

I checked out Lao Air flights while there

They definitely have a twice weekly service to/from Chiang Mai

    but heavily booked

and I seem to remember flights to BKK

If you don't mind discomfort you can get a slow boat (2 x 6 hr days) or speed boat (about 8 hrs in one day)

from Chiang Kong as I did (slow boat down and speed boat back)

Magnificent scenic trip and very cheap but extremely uncomfortable :o

unless you book an upmarket tour with private boat

  12. Does anyone know of a decent restaurant or cafe that sells Indian food in Chiangrai? I saw one by the Udomrak massage place (in the soi between Pizza Company and the street with the beer bars) a while back but it's not there anymore.

No it has gone unfortunately.... I think it only lasted about 3 months or so.

I too am a big Indian fan and we can only hope that one comes along soon..

    ITR :D

ok - thanks for your response.

    Hi Guys,

I too am an Indian/ Pakistani curry lover

The one beside the massage parlour near Jetyod was good

during the short time it lasted

Last year I got a passable take-away from the little place near the mosque

The new place near Rimkok does good food, especially kau sui, but she says no

    Indian/Pakistan style curries

Just a couple of months ago I got a passable curry

at the restaurant just outside the gates of the Dusit

(fairly expensive place but worth it fot the eye candy :o )

Its listed on the menu as Indian chicken curry I think

Surely there is a gap in the market here for some

enterprising curry chef - I'd die for a good curry, some daal and a chaptti :D

Please please please if anyone does find a place let me know

    :D

Is the Internet the only way to check schedules

or is there an on screen schedule that I ain't found yet :D

Yes you can click on the epg button and that will tell you.

The best way is to print a schedule of the internet and that way have evrything on the channels that you want.

  16. Hi Guys,

Are the Aus/NZ tours of UK on UBC?

If not I pesume ABC or South Africa satellite will cover.

If they do - are there any bars in Chiang Rai with ABC or SA satellte feed?

    Many Thanks

    tung tsz

I'm not sure but I think they were on Star sport last year. If so most Jetyod bars will be accomodating.

It's nice to have a fellow rugby enthusiast, although we seem to be in a minority!

    Plod1

Unfortunately our good friends at UBC didnt even cover the Tri nations or Northern hemistphere teams tour to the southern

earlier this year. They dont seem to be too concerned about anything other than soccer (football and golf).

No bars on Jetyod will cover it. If ABC Asia pac covers it which I am not 100% sure of, you will be able to watch it at Bo,s place for sure. I am sure there are a few others that have ABC asia but not many.

I dont know of any bar that has Multichoice from South Africa. They will cover the lot as always and every super 14 match next year.

I have it at home so if you guys are stuck I am happy for you to come around and watch the games as I will be watching them.

    In the Rai!

    Thanks Plod1/In the Rai,

  17. More bloody whinging from the ill-informed malcontents. We're about to get one of the best airports in the world and people can only focus on the negatives. No wonder the immigration people want to get rid of these farang.

Look, it's very simple. If you are worried about which airport your flight will arrive at or depart from, there is a new miraculous invention called the telephone. Try using it, or is it more fun to come online and complain incessantly?

I'm actually impressed that they gave this date and they're sticking to it. Of course there will be confusion and disruptions; it's a major logistical exercise.

    Hi Guys,

I am flying in next Wednesday from HK and have had an arrangement for months to meet an old friend at the bar at Gate 7 to fly on to Chiang Rai. Does this latest post mean that if he ain't on Thai that he will be in a different airport?

Are all Thai flights international and domestic flying from the new airport?

If he is at Don Muang will his airline transfer him for his onward domestic flight?

More importantly is there a little bar at the new airport? :o

Don't mean to be a pain but any info much appreciated

  18. I will be flying in on TG international flight on 20 Sept

    I presume to Don Muang

My onward flight is to Chiang Rai with TG

Based on the current situation your Bankok-Chiangrai flight will leave from Don Muang.

THAI have made it clear that as long as their international flights arrive at Don Muang their domestic flights out of Bangkok will leave from Don Muang.

  20. You don't need to have a job to get the visa. What you need is an offer of employment letter or a sponsoring letter from your TEFL course provider which you present to a Thai consulate/embassy to obtain the visa before coming to Thailand.

Non-immB (business) are not too difficult to obtain in your homecountry. Single-entry gives you 3 months + a possible 1 month extension. Multi-entry gives you upto 15 months.

This is as I understand it

    Thanks Loaded,

    That's a bit clearer

I did my TEFL in Thailand 2 years ago

I'll contact them and see if they can assist

    tung tsz

  21. Read this by Peaceblondie in another topic

"Then, there are many teachers like me, who come to Thailand

with a real bachelor's degree (but not in education or English),

a one-year B work visa, and they immediately take a full TEFL course."

    - and it left me confused - :o

I have a BA in Education and completed a TEFL course a couple of years ago.

I have now been teaching English part-time, internally for a Japanese company,

planning my own syllabus, lessons etc.

I finish my fulltime job in a couple of months and plan

to join my g/f in Thailand and would like to teach

    English

From PB's post - is it possible to get a one-year B work visa

    before getting a job ? :D

or is such a visa unrelated to teaching ? :D
