Officials in Prachuap Khiri Khan have intensified their surveillance of Legionnaires’ disease after identifying five cases among foreign nationals in the region.

The developments were discussed in a recent meeting chaired by Kittipong Sukhaphakul, Deputy Governor of Prachuap Khiri Khan, which saw attendance from Dr. Wara Selawattanakul, the Provincial Public Health Doctor, and representatives from related agencies.

The meeting aimed to review the status of significant infectious diseases within the area, particularly noting the emergence of Legionnaires’ disease cases from February 9 to March 18, 2024.

The reported cases include one Myanmar national residing in the Sam Roi Yot district and four foreign tourists living in Hua Hin, with two hailing from the Netherlands, one from Sweden, and one from Germany.

These individuals, who were staying in a mix of accommodations including hotels, condominiums, and guesthouses, have prompted a thorough investigation and control measures by the Provincial Public Health Office.

Efforts include surveying and sampling water from the residences and hotels involved, inspecting Hua Hin’s municipal water system infrastructure, and identifying potential sites of contamination.

Legionnaires’ disease, a bacterial infection presenting symptoms akin to the flu such as fever, headache, and severe cases leading to pneumonia, is spread through airborne droplets and the aspiration of contaminated water.

Notably, it cannot be transmitted from person to person, but the risk of outbreaks necessitates vigilant monitoring. In response to the detected cases, Hua Hin Hospital and Bangkok Hospital – Hua Hin are coordinating to screen for new instances of the disease, including tests for the genetic material of the Legionella bacteria.

Deputy Governor Kittipong Sukhaphakul has emphasized the importance of maintaining standard chlorine levels in the municipal water supply while awaiting the results of the water sample tests. Despite the disease not being highly transmissible among people, a significant outbreak could potentially impact the region’s tourism sector.

Forget the health concerns. They are more worried about damaging tourism dollars

I had one bigger than that taken from my back many years ago. It was done in office. No hospital needed. It was almost as big as a tennis ball. Local anesthetic was only used. In Thailand though they will insist on hospitalisation or to be done in hospital simple for the extra money. It won't be cheap for a foreigner

    yes and no.
Yes: my son collapsed in dep.store and we went to St. Louis Hospital. 5 days under dripper (basic solution nothing special). Every morning (6AM) strange student from local college came to take a blood sample. Why? Maybe study? cost 28.000 THB.
    He recovered himself.
No: I didn't. It is your immune system that fights Dengue. You just sit and wait until its over.

PS: I saw a little girl in our kindergarten after Dengue - she lost so much weight that turn her into a shadow. Literally. So skinny!

PPS: few years later I got it again. Same suffering and weakness, same change of taste.

Vitamins don't do much. Its only your immune system fights it. And common sense to avoid places with stale water and pure luck.

My 8 year old daughter got it in school in Prachuap. Nasty. Worse than COVID. Took a week for symptoms to subside. Luckily she did not need hospitalisation. But we had to work hard to keep the fever at a stable temperature.

Isn't it a great tourist attraction any more then?

It never really has been a great tourist attraction. 10 years ago the monkeys were roaming around free and raiding nearby shops as well as attacking passerby's... Only in the last few years have the people been complaining. Also they are using the excuse about development in the area taking away the monkeys habitat. But anyone who has been there know that their habitat is the city. And no development would change that. They spouted off about sterilising the monkeys. But they were doing that also the past few years and it did not help. They need to change the city and make a home for all those monkeys if they really want to do something constructive. Perhaps relocate all monkeys to government land and make it a tourist spot. If they don't the monkeys will continue to rule this city as they do now.

  5. I thought they were trying to stop or reduce the water splashing and make songkran more traditional.. they seem to be using the words soft power alot as an excuse. 4 days of driving around wet was quite a bit. I can not imagine being wary of water throwers to drivers for 3 weeks. It also does not say if it will be a national holiday for those 3 weeks... Will government offices be closed?

are you or have you taught in a Thai school, or is this what you have heard?

    There is a huge difference.

You obviously do not have young children. They know a whole lot more these days than most kids did a decade ago.

They hear things on TV, YouTube, and other areas all the time. I have had Pratom 1 girl tell me to F OFF. She had o idea what it meant, but she knew the context. A check with Mom found that she picked it up on TV

I am not saying he did or did not do it. The problem was/is that these charges are made when the person is named in paper and media and then nothing, so all we know is that he was charged.

The first thing you are warned about as a teacher is to stay away from all the girls and be careful of their interest in you and report it.

There needs to be more info. The other point is that in most schools, the Pratom 3 teacher has little or no contact with the Pratom 4 classes.

Hmm let's see... I have 2 Thai daughters and one Thai son.. daughters are on P3 and P4.. son is in Kg3..  I have been teaching in Asia and Thailand for 11 years.... My 3 year old knows foul language as seen on TV and in movies. Knowing the words for bad language does not give them full understanding.... My comments about no feeling at that age meant they have no pleasure. So for their not talking about it means they were threatened to keep their mouths shut about it... Clearly you do not know much about kids or what happens in Thai schools... I have 7 of my own kids. Have been teaching primary English for a very long time and still do it. Also, have seen and heard threats made to students not to tell family what happened in school that may be bad by a teacher. I have seen worse and know it was never told to families of students... You can live in your fantasy world but it will only last until you realize the power a Thai teacher holds over kids that age. Even a foreigner teacher. Thailand teachers. There is muchpre abuse that never gets learned about simply because the fear instilled into the student if they say things badly about what is seen or done. Including but not limited to molestation. It is one of the biggest problems in Thai schools. That and the abusive hitting of small children.

A common issue....  'Thainess' creeping into these Apps - the only solution is every time this happens to make a complaint - it we want continued 'good service and convenience' of these Apps, then we have to play our part too and give feedback.

    The reason this happens:

Ride Hailing / sharing Apps such as Grab / Bolt (Uber) only identify the pickup point to the drivers in the area, they not identify the destination to the driver...

The reason for this is that some destinations are more favourable to a driver than others and other area's are drivers will not want to go into due to heavier traffic...

Also, if a driver is in an area and are 'logged in as 'available' they have to accept x amounts of rides or they will be down-rated (as I understand it)...

So... They accept the ride, then decided they don't want to take the fare - but they don't want to cancel themselves as they will be penalised....  Thus, they contact you and ask you to cancel it, thus protecting themselves at your expense.

Grab and Bolt are aware of this - and in their 'drop down menu' of reasons for cancelling the ride, there is the option "Driver asked to cancel"...  in which case you should not be charged.

    --------

When UBER was around and there was better competition, this was less of an issue.

But, I do recall a similar issue where I'd ordered an UBER...    and they driver clearly didn't want the fare but had accepted.

I was in no rush. The driver hadn't moved for 20 mins, so I ordered a Grab and left the UBER fare 'open'.

I was already at home an hour later (after getting Grab) before the UBER driver cancelled the ride having still not moved.

I don't understand whythe issue here. You can always cancel the ride stating the driver did not show up. There is no fee for that to you... Also it downgrades the driver and eventually they will lose their jobs. I have had drivers ask me to cancel many times.. I only contact the app customer service and explain this and they write a complaint against the driver.

Over the past several days various Thai politicians and government officials have made headlines, at least on Thai language news, with consistent updates on what they call a pressing issue-Elephant pants.

Specifically, their concerns have been around illegal imports of the elephant pants from China and how Thai officials feel the prices are undercutting those of Thai made elephant pants.

Thailand considers elephant pants, commonly seen on tourists and especially backpackers, as a ‘soft power” and fashion symbol for the country. Well, at least some Thai officials do, not everyone is fond of the elephant pants or believe they are particularly fashionable according to recent conflicting and unconfirmed reports from Thailand’s Soft Power Fashion Committee.

Indeed, some netizens have debated if the elephant pants can even be considered a true soft power at all.

This part really got me laughing.

However, increasing concerns around low-quality non Thai knockoffs flooding the market have prompted the Thai government to take action.

how can it be lower quality compared to Thai being it is the lowest quality in market? Every time I have bought Thai quality they come apart after only a few times wearing it. Surely Non-Thai quality can not be worse

Thaksin Tipped To Be Released On Parole On Feb.18
    By Thai Newsroom Reporters

THE “UNTOUCHABLE” DE FACTO PHEU THAI boss-cum-convict at large Thaksin Shinawatra will likely be released on parole on Feb.18, a police source said today (Feb.6).

The deposed prime minister is now expected to be released on parole after he has spent more than five months for medical treatments of his mystery-shrouded “illnesses” at Police Hospital instead of being literally put behind bars at Bangkok Remand Prison to serve a curtailed, one-year jail term for convicted misconduct perpetrated during his previous premiership.

Justice Minister Thawee Sodsong declined to either confirm or deny news reports that the de facto Pheu Thai boss-cum-convict at large will be released on parole on Feb.18, saying the matter depends on a decision made by a 19-person government committee in charge of granting paroles.

Thawee commented that Thaksin has already practically spent half of his jail sentence at Police Hospital though he may have been basically supposed to be put behind bars at Bangkok Remand Prison since he returned from self-exile abroad last August.

Time to break out the shoe box full of 19 envelopes. He will get the parole and then pay his way out of les majesty conviction. What really amazes me is that if he had a Les majesty charge pending then why did he get a royal pardon reducing his sentence.. and why prosecutors are unable to go question him? The man may be in a hospital but he is supposed to still be in custody. So he has no rights to refuse police interrogation. All of this recent news seems to be a deflection to his being released in 2 weeks on parole.

I still have to wonder about this.  Did he or are they making it up.

I just read about the Salem witch trials in the U.S., and it is interesting that the stories were all made and accusations were made by 3 girls who wanted fame and notoriety, so they kept accusing people.

Also the throw away the idea that a 10 year old would know anything abut this all they need do is YOUTUBE TIKTOK

Girls at that age would not have feeling and not understand what was happening.. this story says the girl had told her brother about it and the brother acted on the info.. also if reading other stories most Thai men threaten the young girls who are instilled since day one in school that the teacher can do anything they want to the kids.

Speeding and tailgating? 2024 and Thailand still doesn't understand why this is dangerous and allows it everyday. More to come soon.

Those big trucks are supposed to be in the left lane... I hope the driver is charged for his illegal actions causing bodily harm. Ohh wait, I forgot this is Thailand and being charged for driving  offences means paying off a bribe.

  12. Thai kids are taught from Primary age in school that they can do almost anything they want and not do what is told without any repurcussion or punishment or responsibility for any actions they do. So as they grow older they get into situations that lead to this happening and then run off knowing their will be little to no punishment or responsibility meeted out to them. What does anyone expect? It will only get worse as they grow older and are shown this.

  13. What incentive is there to make babies when most Thai men leave their pregnant woman for another girl and when parents for the most part do not even raise their own kids. They send them to grandma. Then of course go to work as a bar girl haha. There is not any incentive like monetary gain and welfare assistance, medical or even child care for the single woman who actually want to work.

Mods, please do look into who is leaving laughing emoji's all over the place, including on this sad story of a young autistic girl being raped by her father.

I think that member is ill, and possibly in need of psychiatric treatment.

You are naive to believe and conclude this is a sad story. How many times have you all read stories in the news as reported by a Thai and later learned the woman or man lied to save face. Let them put all or any emoji they want to use to express themself. I am guessing this comment was made by someone who did not read the whole story and how this woman disappeared almost everyday until late in the evening. For all you know she was having an affair with the neighbors husband and can not say he is the father to the wife.

Bear in mind you should limit the power to 10,000 mAH, more and the airlines won't let it on board.

Can't help with where, I bought mine in Oz.

Actually unless rules have changed in the past years the limit is 20,000 mah and the airlines will check it at security checkpoint. You can verify limits with the airlines

  16. If anyone recalls the last wage increase. Prices for food increased and quantity of food served became less yet that wage increase did not really change anyone's lifestyles. Instead Thailand household debt increased substantially as a result.. I wonder what this wage increase will do for the average person working legitimately and for the consumers.

Prime Minister Srettha Thavisin indicated today that his government will not be bound by the 20-year national strategy initiated by the Prayut administration, claiming that it is difficult for a nation to predict accurately what will happen in the next few years, not to mention the next 20, because the world is changing constantly and rapidly.

Chairing a meeting of the National Strategy Committee, the prime minister instructed the committee to set a framework for the national strategy, which is flexible and relevant to global changes, so that people will know in which direction Thailand is heading and all stakeholders are headed in that direction.

He said that the strategy must not be an obstacle to decision making on future development or the future of the country.
