Unfortunately flight prices are a lot higher at the moment (my usual BKK-MAN flight has gone up by 50%) and (IMHO) have little chance to go down for the foreseeable future.

One trick I can share is to use https://matrix.itasoftware.com/search to do your flight searching, this will allow you to search multiple departure airports & dates to find the best deal.

Once you've found a flight , use skyscanner.com to search the different travel sites but always check the airlines own site & unless there's a big difference book direct as it usually makes any changes/issues easier to resolve.

FWIW I consoled myself about the extra cost by telling myself that I'd saved the cost of 4-6 return flights because I haven't been able to visit for the past 2.5 years.

Thanks for that matrix site, it's a nice little tool that.

  2. Hi, ex Chiang Mai expat here looking to take my family back to Thailand this summer as we haven't been back in over 3 years due to the pandemic. However looking at the price of flights to get back they seem a little over the top.

What's going on? Is it getting busy over there now? Are the planes running at full capacity? Do you think, if for example you want to fly from the end of June the prices may come down to fill the plane?

Anyone that had some recent experience flying from Europe lately with any tricks or hacks to get a cheaper flight would be welcomed.

    Thanks

  3. I took my kid back to west to be reared and educated and to be honest with you I've always been conflicted on whether I am doing the right thing. I feel maybe we'd have a better life in Chiang Mai, I know my wife would certainly be happier at home. I had a girl so  I've felt she'd be safer being brought up back home. Next reason is education, I feel she'll get a better education back home, but is that a misconception I have or bias I hold? Are you happy with your Childs education they are receiving here in Chiang Mai? What are the best schools? and how much do they cost?

Also anyone bring up little girls, do you feel you have to be extra vigilant with them?

  4. I’m hearing rumours that there has been dam breach over near sansai. Does anyone know anything about it?

The wife is in a bit of a fuss about it (we’re back in Blighty) I don’t know if she’s getting false info via social media or not.

What do you mean "give away for PEP and PrEP"?

They are giving away PrEP? For free?

  6. I regard the risk of being denied boarding significantly higher than being denied entry by the IO.

I agree with DUS. The carrier won't let you on board if there's a good risk of your being refused entry as they have to bear the burden of returning you. There are LOTS of ways round this, not all recommended e.g. he can overstay and pay the fine. It sounds like the type of thing he'd do.

Quite frankly, people judge you by WHOM you mix with so the original person posting this question might start by asking himself some searching questions such as why he would want to entertain such a guest and how that reflects upon him!

I have to laugh at the judgemental posts. The guy is just looking to come over for a long holiday after working solid for about 10 years he's not interested in integrating into Thai society why should he?, Yes he should be a little more clued up and he doesn't know his arse from elbow when it comes to Thailand, but why should he care about being judged?

How about men living here with Isaan wives half their age, should they be concerned how people judge them?

  7. If he makes no provision before reaching the airport, but is affluent and looks it, he can probably talk his way through check in. He should assure the supervisor that he is sure he will have no problems, and ask for a form guaranteeing to indemnify the airline against any costs they incur should he be denied entry. This has worked for me several times in the past, but it is up to the airline supervisor.

He's neither affluent looking or probably confident enough to blag his way if they pull him on it. Seriously he's not even aware of this problem yet, he thought he'd get a visa on the plane and all he had to do is drop his bags and go sit in a bar for 2 months. I Actually think him having this problem might do him the world of good having to solve it over here, it will force him out of his comfort zone. It will be an experience for him and he'll be wiser after it.

  8. Right here's the sanario, I have a friend coming to Thailand next week, he's coming over fora little over 2 months. He's has been here before but all he done was sit in a girly bar for a month in Koh Samui. I sent him a text asking him if has he got a visa sorted as he will be saying over 60 days, his reply was "do they not still give them out on the plane?" Honestly thought I'm not going to bother!

Here's the question, can he be refused entry with no visa and return ticket exceeding 60days? I'm thinking he might not even get on the flight at home at check in. I aways come over on a one way ticket and the staff at check in always check my visa.

    Will they let him in?

  9. Yes I got my tourist visa at home, I'm just wondering If I can get another one. So they only got rid of double entry visas and "Visa Runs", is that right?

That would mean you could get single entry at home, get a 30 day extension, then get another single entry in a neighboring country with the 30 day extension which would be six months in total. Is that correct?

  10. Yep, there's a Newcastle lad (an expat here) that watches the Toon in the UNirish pub.

I'm a Newcastle Fan myself, though I'm not around at the moment.

Give me a shout when your around Mickey [emoji106]

I won't be back until at least September, but I will if you're still around :)
