  1. My posts on this subject are backed by facts, proven figures and documented history. You, on the other hand, never have a word to say about blatant lies posted on this forum as long as they bash Israel and make excuses and justifications for the Islamic terrorist groups that are their enemies. That is a different kind of "one sided" and far worse.

Nonsense, you just compared Israeli children being cautioned to Palestinian children being locked up

Please drop the stupid spin. Another poster suggested that NO Israeli children had been jailed up AT ALL, when the facts are that 53 were locked up within a few years. They were not just "warned" or "cautioned" You are making things up. They were ARRESTED.

    beatdeadhorse.gif.pagespeed.ce.adWp7jUAu

I have never read of a settler child or indeed a settler being locked up for stone throwing.

A caution is a kind of charge and follows an arrest, it is not possible to be cautioned without being arrested first. This is the UK legal term for what happened to all of the Israeli child stone throwers arrested who were not released without charge.

I would say that it is you with the ridiculous spin by focusing on the semantics of "locked-up" and ignoring the intended meaning; that there are Palestinian children serving life for throwing stones whilst the worst that has ever happened to an Israeli child is being arrested and then let go.

The reason for this is that according to Israeli law anyone under the age of 18 is not "criminally responsible", the actions of an Israeli child can never result in more than an official warning. But, Israel doesn't rule Palestine with Israeli law, they rule them with military law under which a child of 12 is held criminally responsible. There is no other country in the world that puts children before a military court.

  2. So they are not guaranteed a minimum wage?

This stinks, if they can't find other EU-workers then something is wrong. There are loads of East Europeans who will come if there's work.

And what if they need healthcare? Or want to leave because they can't eat moosemeat? Or go crazy from the mozzies? Or commit a crime?

At least not in the past and it doesn't sound like they will be offered a minimum wage this year either judging by the article. I don't think these companies could actually make a profit on Finnish minimum wages so they offer a piece rate instead and look to Asia for staff.

Presumably the piece rate is too low to attract the many unemployed Latvians who are so close to hand and who only expect to receive a wage approximately 1/4 of which a Finn expects.

As they are on a tourist visa their EU healthcare or a necessary early return to Thailand would be their responsibility alone. These are both questions raised by the EU in 2013 and issues which apparently have been left unaddressed. Committing a crime might well be their best option, then the could argue in court that they felt forced into petty crime by being enslaved.

I have seen it in the UK, Eastern Europeans promised a chance to earn a decent wage but instead just losing out. They were waiting in caravans whilst living off their savings, many gave up and went home broke, through endless weeks of rain. This is the reality of farming, things do not always go as expected and are dependent on the climate. But when importing workers from a very different economy any risks and losses should be borne by the farmer alone, the workers should not even have to pay upfront, certainly not more than their airfare.

These companies want it all, they want the cheapest labor possible and then make them take all the risk. At least Thailand has stepped in and ensured that they are given free accommodation as some were being charged even when there was no work and also restricted the numbers as the high numbers of workers was the main cause of the problem last time.

  3. <script type='text/javascript'>window.mod_pagespeed_start = Number(new Date());</script>

"The Finnish government assured that the produce will be bought at reasonable prices."

    That doesn't sound like employment.

Does that mean that the pickers will only be paid when the berries are sold and according to the selling price?

Hope those interested can easily find the names of the 20 approved job agencies and hope they are all frequently monitored for no games and severely punished (minimum of 2 years jail if they do play games.

Exactly when the pickers will be paid is not clear. What has been done in the past is the workers paid 75,000 Baht upfront in exchange for a promised earnings of 91,000 Baht per month but this was dependent on them meeting a minimum quota which they did not. Many complained of actually increasing their debt whilst working in Finland.

The EU requested Finland to clarify the status of the Thai workers two years ago, as they have been taken in on tourist visas and thus denied all Finnish employment rights. This is in direct contradiction to EU law but nothing changed last year and I suspect the same will be the case this season.

  4. I thought with the EU rules those jobs should go to EU nationals first?

The Finns will be most welcome to come to the UK and press gang some of our work shy benefit claimants.whistling.gif

If they can't find Eastern Europeans to do this work then there is something wrong with it and considering the past record of wild berry picking in Finland and Sweden it is clear that the problem is the workers just can't find enough berries to cover the high living costs in the area.

  5. They aren't going to get away with that crap in the US if they are found out. He received a restraining (no contact) order, had his passport taken and has to post $250K bond.

Once he posts bail he loses a lot of rights. Anyone ever watch the TV show "Dog The Bounty Hunter?" He was hired to track down and capture bail jumpers. He would find them, beat the crap out of them if needed, handcuff them and drag them back to jail. This, and Dog was a civilian, and it happens all the time.

If convicted, this perp is going to prison for a loooong time.

Never mind Dog the Bounty Hunter in the States they've got Gentle Ben enforcing the law!

  6. I'm not Bush fan, but he is right about Obama's failed foreign policy.

Bush offered harsh words for Obama's foreign policy, calling his administration "inconsistent and indecisive" and saying it has led the U.S. to lose "the trust and the confidence of our friends."

Shame he neglected to mention that Obama merely inherited the mess that Bush's foreign policy created!

  7. Fox News loves to point at the bad weather and cold temperatures and ask, global warming? The lemmings eat this up because they want to believe it. It's a conspiracy, man. Obama wants to take our guns. facepalm.gif

Anyone, at this point, who still denies global warming is an ideologue. Informed, rational, scientific minded, people who think for themselves and believe what the overwhelming number of scientists tell them, all know this stuff.

I wonder how many climate change deniers also believe in intelligent design? All of them? It takes the same demented reasoning to get to both positions, throw in religion and...yea, all of them.

Global warming is about climate change. This pattern continues with this being the warmest year in recorded history (that's a fact). It's created drought and devastating weather/climate changes throughout the world. The fact that it's cold in Missoula is irrelevant and a pathetic argument against global warming. Glaciers are melting and the seas are rising. California and Thailand are facing droughts. Australia battles record heat waves. There is no snow in the Rockies. Hurricanes increase in the Gulf. This happens as a result of climate change.

Global warming is causing climate changes, lemmings. It's sad reading this thread. So much tin foil hat nonsense out there.

    Who you talkin' about then?

No one on here denies that climate change is happening, but we don't believe that it is actually caused by people using electricity and driving cars- perhaps you do, so are you going to stop using the computer ( uses electricity ) and travelling in carbon powered transportation? No- I didn't think so.

Anyway, despite all that you say, no government is going to actually do anything different, so what are YOU gonna' do about it?

No government is going to do anything different or YOUR government is not going to? Take a look at the renewable energy efforts and successes Germany has made recently before stating such nonsense.

  8. Apes and monkeys are not same-same.

Follow the recent American trend - inclusion is the key to minimizing the impact of monkeys on people and visa-versa.

Thai monkeys cannot be bad for Thais.

If you feed them well enough - they will be discouraged from foraging.

Time to think - "What did we do to make monkeys happier?"

If I was living in an area where monkeys start to settle, why would it be my responsibility to make them happy and feed them well? Or to pay taxes for that? I dont accept racketeering from humans, I wouldnt start with monkeys.

relocation to REAL and large reserves where tourism is completely banned and poaching REALLY prevented is the only sensible approach. Reserves where not even scientists and doctors try to play God in order to allow a natural echosystem do settle. It would be the cheapest and most effective solution, but ot is not in the modern human habits to find that giving up control is a solution to anything.

Did you even read the article? It says that there are 3000 monkeys in this one town and that this is too many to relocate practically. It also states that the monkeys were there first, I don't know where you got this idea that the monkeys have moved into the area. It is obviously people encroaching on natural habitats not the other way around.

The idea of having reserves where not even scientists or doctors go is nothing but an ignorant fantasy. If such a place were to be set aside with such restrictions then you can be sure that without the officials taking care that it would be a paradise for poachers; left undisturbed to kill or capture all that they please. This approach of essentially doing nothing and letting nature take course is the most modern conservation technique and one which is increasingly practiced in the west. However this is still with the support of scientists, without which we would have no idea as to the success or failure of such projects.

  9. AjarnDara, your so right, the temple is adored by those who visit it. The monks work so hard looking after the tigers and showing tourists around. This place is a credit to Thai tourism and a saviour for the tiger. Less than 10,000 wild tigers left. Some must be captive in case numbers of tiger continue to fall.

Thankyou, Tiger Temple, your hardwork and love of tigers inspires all of us

They do not even know what breed of Tigers they have, it is suspected that they have three breeds and have interbred these three. This means that releasing them is not a possibility. The plan is to keep them as a tourist attraction, there is no conservation effort in mind other than writing it on a board outside to satisfy the more gullible of tourists.

  10. I like how you missed out your beloved anti democracy brigade barring people from voting in the election that was held. How do you justify forbidding the people of Thailand from choosing their ruling party? Is it by the same justification as them, that democracy failed THEM?

Two polling stations were blocked. And some Southern areas didn't get election paperwork. The rest of Thailand voted!

My wife voted. If you're married or have a Gf I'm sure she voted. Don't let facts get in the way of a good story though!!!

I didn't say they barred everyone, I said they barred people from voting, millions of people were denied their chance to vote.

In Bangkok two were physically chained shut by the PDRC, but another 34 were also forced to shut by the mob of protesters, which is more than half of Bangkok's polling stations.

Nationwide 23% of polling stations were closed.

Actually it was " Almost 500 of Bangkok's 6,671 polling booths were closed and people in nine provinces in the south were also unable to cast their votes." Yinglucks government knew about the south and didn't really bother about it due to them believing THEY would get minimal votes. Don't get me wrong, blocking votes should NEVER of happened. But when discussing it at least keep to the truth!

Sorry, the confusion is over actual polling stations and constituencies. 34 of Bangkoks constituencies had no vote, this numbered 488 stations.

What is the difference between the Bangkok situation and the stations in the south, other than the fact that you know that much of the south is an opposition stronghold?

Absolutely nothing in the terms that the election was affected. Lots when you consider not a lot was actually done to rectify the southern problem of no ballot papers!

I personally don't like any power hungry politicians whether their names Suthep, Thaksin or Silpa-Archer (or any others) they are all bad for Thailand and the Thai people!

I don't know about the missing ballot papers issue, but there were also protesters blocking polling stations in the south.

  12. The Hamas does control materials making their way into the Gaza strip, be it via illegal smuggling or authorized shipments. The main issue with concrete is indeed that it is used for Hamas projects rather than for the benefit of the civilian populations. The Hamas steadfastly refuses to any viable controls over use of construction materials and dual-use materials. Even when such measures are temporarily agreed upon conditions are often broken. The shortage of cement and other construction materials are probably one issue which Gazan's feel relatively free to express their displeasure at.

And yes, many of the items on the banned list make no sense. This by itself does not mean that there are no credible issues with regard to dual-use materials.

"This by itself does not mean that there are no credible issues with regard to dual-use materials."

It casts doubt against any reason they give for restricting anything.

This is an interesting development from Gaza.

No really, there is very little argument that Hamas does use materials to advance its own projects (be it construction or armament). There is also very little argument that Hamas is not ready to accept outside controls over funds and materials.

The story linked is indeed interesting. Well done for the guy mentioned, quite resourceful and sounds like a right kind of attitude.

Mind, the story does not actually get into the whys - why funds for rehabilitation of Gaza are not transferred, and why construction materials are not brought in. Answers are more to do with the Hamas and the inter-Palestinian split than with anything else.

There will always be people who accept their situation and others who fight to improve it. The divide will persist regardless but the extremes we have seen will only continue as long as Israel continues to dominate them in such an extreme way. It's all quite natural considering their situation and the answer can only come from Israel retreating from the entire originally agreed upon Palestinian territory.

  14. Fiber glass rockets and mortars? This can't be serious.

It's restriced as it is always used to make their mortors and never to fix their motors, just like cement which is also banned, is always for tunnel building and never for rebuilding their city following Israeli airstrikes.

The reason they banned books, candles, crayons, clothing, cups, cutlery, crockery, glasses, light bulbs, matches, musical instruments, needles, sheets, blankets, shoes and mattresses in 2009? Anyone?

  15. The redshirt culprit and his red shirt lawyer wonder why bail is not allowed?

If the redshirts and their leaders didn't keep running away they might be trusted?

After all its only guilty people who run.

Im am not trying to claim that these particular people are innocent, but to claim that only guilty people run is absurd, frightened innocent people who fear an injustice also run.

  16. And who pays for this course? The individual teacher, the teacher's school, or the Ministry of Education?

Certainly not the ministry, perhaps the teachers school is they are lucky, but generally it will be the teacher who pays. It only applies to foreign teachers who teach for three consecutive years though, so it wont be that much of a burdon to most. And considering that this replaces the recently required Qualified Teacher Status to continue teaching for more than 3 years, this actually comes as a relief.
