@jimn  - We do exactly this 2x per year.

    - Visit the UK

    - Wife as a named driver on one of my Parents Cars

    -  *An IDP was not necessary (there is a dual agreement between Thailand and the UK and the Thai DL is in English)

    - A non-UK license holder can only be added to insurance for a fixed period (i.e. 10 days, 2 weeks, a month whatever you need etc)

    - It costs very little to add my Wife (the admin fee is often more - i.e. its less than £25 for 4 weeks).

*others mentioned an IDP was asked for - no harm in getting one anyway.

Can I ask who your parents insure with please as my insurance is due next month and it may be worth switching

It appears that the Op wants to add his Wife as a named driver, not as the main policy holder...    Or at least thats what I assumed what he means when he wrote below (adding - which is £25 to add my Wife to an existing policy)

So, I'm guessing the Op has a car in the UK already (on which he has insurance)...  and as he wrote my wife 'comes' to the UK, I assume the Op is currently in the UK and his Wife is in Thailand and visits for a couple of months every year.

Thanks Richard just for clarification, we normally spend about 6 months in each. This year my wife stayed behind in Thailand until I have a date for my operation. Yes I have a car in the UK and the plan is to add her as a named driver on my policy for a couple of months.

  3. I am not sure if this is the correct forum to ask. My wife comes to the UK every year for a few months. This year I am having a hip replacement so cannot drive. My wife Haa a full Thai driving licence and I know she can drive in the UK for up to a year. What about insurance. Does anyone have experience of adding a Thai to a UK insurance policy. How much it will cost? Any idea of insurance companies who will do this?

    Thanks

I'm guessing that many of the replies that say "don't drink and drive" are from poor expats who don't own even a motorcycle, let alone a car.

I explicitly said "never intoxicated" I just wanted to know, if I had a beer, and the cop smelt beer on my breath, how to avoid the obvious lengthy inconvenience after.

I appreciate the 2 helpful replies thus far, alien & quake, and find those answers helpful.

To those of you who wrongly accuse me of driving while drunk, I hope you manage to get a vehicle in the near future.

Basically avoid the checkpoints and use the back streets. The checkpoints are always in the same place.

    Outside Tony's gym.

At the junction with the Pratumnak on the Thrapaya road.

At the roundabout near Terminal 21. I don't know of any others

I was trying to book a hotel in the UK through Agoda but they only accept Visa debit or credit cards. Why can that be? I have three debit cards. all Mastercards.

Anyone know why? Anyone else have this problem?

No point in going to booking.com when you reply to them, the answer comes back saying that the email address does not exist.

You are obviously doing something wrong. Alternatively they are worried you won't show up.

Went out on a family holiday in January, and once back in Pattaya wife tried to do a TM30 report at immigration and it was absolutely packed, huge line stretching out on the sun, we just gave up. Btw the house isn't ours, but wife has copies of all documents needed.

Unless you have travelled in Thailand and a TM30 registered in your name in a hotel or something a new TM30 is not required in Jomtien. My TM30 is from 2018 and I leave for 4 months every year and re enter Thailand with a Retirement extension and a reentry permit to the same address. Never had to file a new TM30, yes at Jomtien immigration.

My first 90 day report date is due on the 12th of April 2024.

It is my understanding this had to be done in person so I didn't try to do online.

First 90 day report after what. Have you ever used the online system before? If you have ignore those that tell you the first one has to be done in person.

I am on a Retirement extension and every year I visit the UK for 4 months and return to Thailand to the same address with a re entry permit. First online 90 day works no problem.

This year I entered on a new passport. I had the stamps transferred to my new passport, again my first 90 online worked perfectly.

She would seem to have acouple of options. The most obvious option is to cut her holiday short, go back to UK now, and submit her FLR application before 30 April.

In theory she can make the application from Thailand, but she must be in UK to give biometrics. So, she could do the online stuff from here, and make an appointmemt  to give biometrics at a later date. Her problem, of course, is that she still has to be back in UK by the 30th April or she has no leave to remain or enter. The airline will refuse to carry her to UK without a valid Residence Permit.

If she doesn't enter the UK before 30th April, then I think she must start the whole visa application process again. And that means applying under the new rules regarding financial requirements and income.

That's how I see it.  I could be wrong.

I agree, coupled with the fact that she has to have lived continuously in the UK for the previous 2.5 years. Now if she has had many 2 month holidays in this period they may consider that she has breached this requirement.

As I said in my original post ! you can still use them even though your car does not need testing. I made it very clear about the charges, never mind.

Its you that's getting confused pal. He is not talking about a yearly vehicle inspection to get road tax. He is saying his car insurance wants photos of his car and bodywork before they will insure it for another year. This has to be carried out by their rep. This has nothing to do with a car reliability check, totally not the same. You need to offer an apology for your condescending posts.

Seen the same rotation method in bars and when you point to there ignorance they look at you like you are mad.

I had a bad experiance in a bar one time when buying a large bottle of chang . The taste was terrible and voiced my objection to the bar staff and i was informed that we dont drink beer so we would not know if it was good or bad .

They also have bad planning when to get a fresh load of beer into the fridge to maintain a supply of cold beer. I am often served hot beer and need a large amount of ice to be made drinkable which results in watered down beer.

I drink at home more often now.

Yes exactly. When they restocking the fridges they don't move the bottles from the back to the front. The other thing some bars do is turn the fridges off overnight and then on when they open. The fridge then has to work extra hard to chill the beer and use more electricity. At home my beer always goes from the fridge to the freezer for 30 minutes before I drink it, I like it ice cold. I also drink from a Yeti stainless steel tumbler which keeps the beer ice cold in these hot temperatures.

Best before date, plus, I may find your beer horrible...........😉

Must be the only beer with a best before date over here then. Most have fill dates.

Up at 5 am.....walk the dog, do the usual chores and complete any tasks set by SWMBO.....all done by 9 am. Sit outside till I can no longer stand it......10, 11 ish......then bliss A/C bang. Walk the dog again 6 pm...then it is getting perilously close to beer o'clock.

How about me. Sleep until 9am. Make a coffee and take it back to bed with my young wife until 10. Quick shower and both down the gym until 1pm. A bit of lunch and then do any necessary jobs, if not chill inside with all doors and windows open in front of the fan. Too hot and too many flies outside. 5.30 take the dog for a walk she likes to sleep all day. 6.30 pm hook up my TV outside and watch anything I want via my IPTV service. Have a beer if I want and eat when hungry. 11pm bed. 12 midnight sleep.

  14. The supermarkets like Big C and Lotus's are the worse. They do not rotate their beer stocks. Its quite common to see a large stock of beer ie Leo with the new cases on top whilst underneath there are cases months old.

Whenever you initiate a transfer procedure, Wise has incurred a cost. If you then cancel that transfer that cost it a loss to them. Which is why on every transfer, prior to confirming, you are asked to tick a box which says 'I may have to pay a higher fee on future transfers if I cancel'.

The evidence is right before your eyes.

    Have a nice day.

That's told me then hasn't it. I wonder why they have this facility to hold the rate for 2 hours etc. Surely its to help the customer get a better rate, that's what I assumed anyway, obviously wrong.
