  1. Nothing new there, and it makes sense: after not having eaten for 8-10 hours, your body runs on empty and desperately needs food.

Not true...the body can run on stored body fat for some time. I am nowhere near "desperate" after fasting for 10 hours. I routinely go at least 12-14 hours between my last evening meal and breakfast.

  2. Another good method for losing weight is to get rid of your tv set.

I'd probably have to get rid of my computer to gain this benefit!! :o

BTW, I eat about a 500 calorie breakfast. But I might "break the fast" at 8.a.m some mornings, or wait until 10 or 11 other mornings. I try to go 20 hours with out eating once or twice a week. Google "intermittant fasting"--some good info.

  3. I'm trying to lose weight right now so I am going a bit low most of the time I would guess.

Sound like your doing fine. I would try to go a little lower but I lost 30 pounds rather quickly and now I'm doing more of a slow but steady drop. I think it will make it a lot easier to maintain the loss if I gradually increase carbs as I get out of weight loss mode. One thing I avoid now that I will eat eventually are things like sweet potatoes and butternut squash. Also more mango!!! :o

  4. Well, just an update. I am still doing the lowcarb thing.

Just curious--do you have any idea on just how "low" your low carb diet is? I'm doing pretty well staying in the 60-70 gram range which isn't as drastic as some real low carb dieters do.

  5. When you move to Thailand, her nice Medicare/TFL coverage will end, and you and she will fall under Tricare Standard rules in terms of coverage, deductibles, and co-pays -- tho' she'll be officially under TFL, thus still paying the monthly Medicare B premium (currently $96.80, but promising to rise substantially). You too will get to pay when you turn 65.

So we both pay the part B premium, but only get STANDARD coverage. Ugh--that sure pales in comparison to the $460 a year I'm paying for PRIME (and I protest those payments by writing "for my Free Medical Coverage" on the checks). But I guess it's going to beat anything I'll be able to get commercially when I'm 65 and she's 71.

I appreciate the info, Jim (u2 Viceroy)!

  6. Oh, please. Just stack a Subway sandwich next to a Togo, Blimpi's, or any other sub-franshise sandwich in America. Easy to see that Subway is just a veggie sandwich with a slice of meat. I can see them put the meat on in a small pre-wrapped paper package. I only complain because I like a meaty sandwich. Nothing against Subway for those who like a veggie sandwich.

I was born and raised in New Orleans and after I return home and have real good poboy at any one of a number of outstanding sandwich shops in the city, I can't bring myself to eat in a Subway for months!!

  7. The program formerly known as CHAMPUS, now called TRICARE, generally covers 75% of allowable costs outside the USA for all military retirees and dependents, including those aged 65 and above. There are annual deductibles and, for the older beneficiaries, rules with respect to payment of MEDICARE Part B. Information is available on TRICARE websites.

So from the "65 and above" comment may I assume that the "tricare-for-life" program works overseas as well?

Yes, it does; it functions like TRICARE Standard. But you must be subscribed to MEDICARE Part B.

Thanks! This is going to get interesting for me real soon. I'll be 57 in Dec but my wife turned 63 this past May. I'm not sure what her status is when she turns 65, AND I have to take into account we are retiring in Thailand when I'm 62. Decisions...decisions!!

  9. I decided to eat only salads for dinner from Monday to Friday, its not boring I have all sorts of salad, from cheese, bacon, tuna, shrimps, chicken and a variety of salad dressings, Try it, it worked for me.

That's a great way to go. My main meal of the day is what I refer to as my "big as* salad." It will have a variety of greens, cruciferous veggies, and a protein source (including the ones you listed above). And no puny little salad bowl for me! :o

  10. Dclaryjr; you know that you and I are on the same wave length. :o People wish to translate your point into a "conspiracy theory" :D .

The actual reason is (as you mention) simply; PROFIT. It pays to give people what they want/crave, and salty/fatty/sweet foods SELLS - and one craves more the more one gets.

I just want to be clear about one thing. I think that most people who recommend lots of grains, and low-fat foods have their heart in the right place. I don't think Jane Brodie is in the pocket of the agriculture lobby. I just think that a lot of people are just going along with conventional wisdom without questioning the reasoning behind it. This to me is the most important part of Gary Taubes' book. He documents how much of what people believe is based on the work of a few individuals practicing bad science.

Anyway; try not to get too emotional about it! :D Let people eat their crap foods (I do too sometimes but balance it out by generally eating healthly+adding some supplements).

Thanks! :D I try to discuss ideas instead of getting into personal attacks. I took the bait in this thread but I'm done with that. I also indulge from time to time in food that my ancestors wouldn't recognize--but it's a rare treat rather than a recurring indulgence.

  11. And by the way I do think they'd be much better off following the latest gov't guidlines (that you insist are to support the grain industry)

You're putting words in my mouth now. The way you stated it, you're saying I think the government came up with the food pyramid for the purpose of supporting the grain industry. I didn't say that--that IS the stuff of conspiracy theorist. But the existence of the pyramid DOES help promote the sale of grains.

(Do a little research on farm subsidies and then you'll see some real government support for the grain industry--but that's another topic).

  12. For palm oil there is unfortunately little research available, but coconut oil is plenty. Coconut oil is probably THE most healthy cooking oil there is. The reason for this is that it is the most stable plant oil if treated with heat. All other oils have a lot of chemical changes, bad for health.

There is enough info on the internet available to back this up. A little search and reading will do miracles...

Another good reason to be in Thailand: palm and coconut oil easy available!

Yes!! There is another believer--I'm not alone!!! :o

Here's some good info on palm oil from Scott Kustes of modernforager.com:

When I talk about palm oil, I’m talking about the unmodified red palm oil like that sold by Tropical Traditions (where I buy my palm and coconut oils). Palm kernel oil and any clear palm oils are not going to have the health benefits of red palm oil due to refining, deodorization, and bleaching. Palm oil is an excellent source of numerous vitamins, including Coenzyme Q10 which supports healthy heart function. It contains all eight forms of vitamin E - 4 tocopherols and 4 tocotrienols - along with high levels of vitamin A, mainly in the form of alpha- and beta-carotene, which provide the rich red color. Palm oil actually has fifteen times the beta-carotene (a form of vitamin A) content of a carrot and 300 times that of a tomato. Palm oil is the second most widely consumed oil in the world, behind soybean oil. However, if we remove the United States from the equation, palm oil is the number one oil. For some reason, we’d rather hydrogenate soybean oil than use natural palm oil for baking.

    The whole post is here.

  13. I love the entertainment here afforded by our forum conspiracy theorists. :o A health-related topic always brings 'em out, too.

No conspiracy...just pointing out that advice from the government that is turning out to be questionable. We are being bombarded in the U.S. to eat "whole grains"--a result of the infamous food pyramid. That's not a conspiracy--that's fact. You can choose to believe the advice of the last 20 years--be my guest. Again, I'm just suggesting people do some research. You can believe the advice of the last 20 years, or read the growing body of evidence suggesting that it's wrong. Read "Good Calories, Bad Calories" by Gary Taubes with an open mind and then tell me that there is no room for doubting was has passed for nutritional advice the last couple of decades.

I tell them, non-fat potato chips (as are readily available now in the States) taste as good as regular--and they really do, though they also represent salty empty calories

Potato chips are crap--fat or fat free. Nice advice.

In the meantime, they've got their knees replaced and keep takin' their insulin shots

Sure...from eating a lot of junk food...like those chips you recommended. Eat REAL FOOD! Meat, eggs, vegetables, some fruit, nuts & seeds, AND get some exercise.

  14. This exercise machine, which is in almost every gym, melts weight off exactly where you want to lose it. I do this because my knees can't take jogging (which melts weight off around the middle quicker).

Believe this if it helps you but make no mistake--there is NO SUCH THING as targeting fat loss from a particular part of the body other than invasive methods.

  15. From 1st July I have started to implement many of the suggestions (eating and exercise regime)and I am keeping a daily diary/notebook, and I will report back in about 6-8 months and give details of my progress.

If you'd like to try an online tool for tracking your progress try fitday.com. You can track your food intake, exercise, keep a diary, get reports, and more. And it's free!
