  1. If you really intend to start a home exercise program, the very best would be an elliptical machine.

They are very gentle on the knees and get your heart rate up easier than on other equipment because you are using your upper and lower body simultaneously.

I would vote for a good rowing machine (like the Concept 2). It does a much better job of intergrating more muscle groups than an elliptical.

  2. All the experts will tell you that the only two sure fire ways to lose weight - and you must use both of them - is a careful diet, keeping to the minimum of sugar and fat, and regular exercise. Doing one without the other is rarely effective.

You're incorrect in saying that ALL the experts say the above. There are quite a few very knowledgeable physicians and scientist who have created a lot of doubt in the whole "low fat" gospel. The evidence is mounting that excess carbohydrates, especially from processed grains and other forms of sugar, are responsible for the bulging waist lines. Eating fat doesn't make you fat.

  4. Congratulations! I've officiated something like 50 swim meets over the last few years and I could make a great "blooper" film showing some pretty bizarre turns. But it's not something I've attempted because I finally learned how to breathe properly at the age of 53 (three years ago). So you're right--we old dogs CAN learn new tricks!! :o

  5. S, P, F, C, MF, CS, T!!!!

I didn't realy follow the guy, but after reading the obit's in the paper I was going to post to ask this question ................... but I think I'm just about there from the clues above

    RIP

Yep, the seven words you can't say on TV (television or ThaiVisa) :o

I remember buying one of his books from an airport news stand while I had a couple hour layover. I was sitting at a gate laughing so hard that I had tears running down my cheeks. There obviously won't be any new material but a lot of his material was timeless--it will play well on HBO for years to come!

  6. My wife has her old Thai passport in her former name, and has our marraige certificate. I don't think, however, that she has her old ID card. Is it possible for her to get a new passport while still in the U.S., or is she going to have to wait until she enters as a tourist and gets everything she needs on that trip? It would be nice if she could get that passport--that would save one visa when we go next time.

  7. I spoke with my father last night and he told me that the USA is saying that gas prices will go as high as 7 USD by the end of the year so I can't even imagine what that means for us here.

I just read an article today predicting that it would top out at $4.15 this summer. Meanwhile Ford F-150 trucks are sitting on lots unsold.

Don't tell me you believe everything what's printed, do you ?

Anyone who can predict oil prices is NOT writing articles in papers or magazines about what a gallon of gas is going to be this summer; he's sipping a margarita on his Mega-yacht, surrounded by beautiful girls and not sure whether to take the chopper or the Riva for lunch on the beach... :o

    LaoPo

To be more precise, this came from the head of the Federal Energy Information Administration (whatever that is) in testimony to congress. He also said he expects it to STAY there this year and next!

  8. The bht is bound to crash in the next week or so as I have just transferred a huge amount from the UK to finish my house here.

Apetley, yep, that's exactly what I did.  May 1996, transferred in a big batch of baht and bought the house out here at Klong 10.  Of course, it needed modification and additions, so August 1996 transferred in a 2nd BBB, all complete by December 1996.

    Mac

I got (through my brother-in-law) a ten year note to build a house in 2002 when the exchange rate was still in the 40s. So I predict it won't go back into the 40s until 2012! :o

  9. You can only loose so much weight by eating less.

You can lose all the weight you need to by eating more of the right things and less of the wrong things. Fat loss is probably 80% diet.

IF you start eating a too low amount you will get your body to go into starvation mode and you wont loose any more weight. Also you will loose a lot of muscle too. Personally i find it best to combine a good food program (did not call it dieet because in my mind that sounds too much like eating not mucht) and excercise. I think you should not exlude one or the other.

I didn't say anything about eating too low an amount of food. I eat a lot of food and have lost a lot of weight. And exercise is definitely a factor--it's just not as big a factor as some would have you believe. I don't spend hours pouring out sweat on a treadmill or a spinning bike. I keep my high intensity workouts short, and my low intensity workouts long. Works for me!

  10. Since I posted in another topic that I have lost 45 pounds over the last nine months, I've received a couple of PM's asking me for details. I thought I'd just go ahead and throw this out to the group. Toward the end of July 07 I was participating in a forum on kettlebell training when I followed a link to Mark Sisson's blog - Mark's Daily Apple. If you followed marathoning and triathlon a couple decades ago, the name may be familiar. Mark was a national level marathoner, and once finished fourth in the Ironman Triathlon. The following post on his plug does a good job of summarizing his views, and it's the basis of the program I've followed for the past nine months:

    The Primal Blueprint

I've gone from 243 to 197 and I'm working on getting the last 10 or so pounds off. I recently made a trip to a clothing donation station to get rid of all my size 44, 42, & 40 pants and shorts. The 38's are next to go!! :o

  11. So try a few things, and find whatever works for you - then do it!

    CC

Good point. I'm convinced that excess carbohydrates are the culprit in most cases of obesity, but what is excess? We all have different tolerances and varied insulin response, so you have to find the level that's right for you.

  12. FAUX News is an interesting channel and Ruper Murdoch has done an excellent job to hire uneducated bigmouthed morons (like Bill O'Reilly and Sean Hannity) to "educate" millions of fellow morons :o

I think Fox News has excellent news broadcasts--I don't think there is anyone better than Brit Hume. But there seems to be a lot of folks who don't understand the difference between "news" and "opinion." Once Sheppard Smith signs off, the "news" is over!

  13. Tabata can be fun but is real intensive. Its one of the few programs that would promote anaerobic and arobic benefits at the same time. I wanted to try it with front squats but my technique isnt good enough yet. Might do it with deadlift. But i would not recomend tabata for ppl who are really out of shape.

I think anyone can benefit from doing interval training of some sort--you just have to scale it if you're starting from a really untrained status. I certainly wouldn't recommend a novice doing it with a technical exercise like front squats. A treadmill, bike, or just doing some burpees would be a better option. The main reason I threw that out is that if someone searches on that, they will eventually find a LOT of links that attest to effectiveness of doing some kind of interval work.

My favorite form of torture is to do Tabata on the Concept2 rower--barf bucket optional! :o

  14. I can see that because you dont eat much veg or fruit a vitamin supliment makes sense and it was reccomended that you did not stay with the diet longterm...but as I said it did reduce my weight quickly and enjoyably...it would probably be more difficult to follow the Atkins diet in Thailand

I eat plenty of vegetables. My lunch every day is large salad that contains several cups of leafy and cruciferous vegetables. It might contain spinach, romaine, red leaf, brocolli, onions, etc. I also add some protien like eggs, chicken, tuna, etc. I usually use olive oil and vinegar as a dressing.

Breakfast is usually a couple of eggs with ham or Canadian bacon, and a small serving of Greek-style yogurt. My evening meal is beef, pork or fish with a couple of vegetable. Sometimes I'll eat squash but not too often. If I snack it will be almonds or perhaps an apple cut up with some almond butter.

What I do avoid are grains and anything with added sugar. I'm convinced excess carbs are the main culprit in the obesity explosion in the U.S. (and the corresponding illnesses like type 2 diabetes).

I couple all this with a varied exercise program. I play a vigorous racquetball match twice a week, and also lift weights a couple times. I do compound lifts like squats, cleans, presses etc. And I do a lot of lower level cardio-long walks and bike rides at a comfortable pace. I figure my weekly golf game is a good replica of our hunter-gatherer ancestors foraging on the plains of Africa. I walk the course, carry my clubs, and spend time searching for my ball!! :-)

  15. If someone eats not enough his body will go into starvation mode. That means all it will slow down and store calories into fat. Its something that used to benefit us long ago.

This might be true if you consistently eat a low calorie diet day in and day out; however, our ancestors didn't eat "three squares" a day or do the many small meals a day. But spending some time being hungry can have some health benefits. Search on "intermittent fasting"--lots of interesting info.
