  1. Gidday

Last year the wife actually overbooked a couple hotels and some friends and family could not make it so i had to fill the spots.

Started at the sukriand right near the clocktower no breakfast mainly for thai bussiness people basic but 300 baht a night good value. Then is was off to the Laluna for 5 days which has excellent rooms huge tv great breakfast around 1100baht through agodaThen it was onward to the wiang inn for 2 nights again nice enough hotel in the heart of the city with good breakfast and nice lunch.Around 1500 bt.Next it was 2 days at the dusit excellent rooms service nice pool great staff around 2700 through agoda.Next 2 nights at the wangcome another hotel in the heart of the city.Funny thing about the wangcome is that my wife who is from c/rai walked off the street and was quoted1800 so my mate went over and was quoted1600then we sent my sister in law 1800 so i tried1600.First time i have ever got a lower price.Anyway nice enough hotel although geting a little tired good breakfast. Then it was back to the Laluna for 8 nights.

So my two would be laluna or dusit although laluna has alot of gardens around your door so there are mossies. The room we stayed at the dusit was high and overlooking the pool with great views so you wont go wrong staying there.

    Cheers

  2. Anyone tried the elephant dung coffee from anatarra resorts?

I seen it in the TV news section. At $50 a cup or $1100 a kilo t would want to be good.

Sounds like VF is a pretty good judge of coffee so I think he should be our taste tester and report back to us and include some photos?

  3. I took my wife and her girlfriend a few years ago and the place we stayed was a bit ordinary to say the least for 500 baht.

I ended up on a bed that sleeps six and was hard as a rock.

Across the road there was some nice chalet accomodation and if you check out GT rider site I think the place is called lasses or something close to it.

As VF says its a bit sparse but the trip and the veiws are fantastic !

When I fly from syd to chiang rai via bkk I normally load up with up to six bottles of red normally a medium quality like a rosemount etc so if they take it off me no big deal.Wife and friends also load up with around 3 bottles each as we have friends in both cei and bkk who really enjoy a red.

That being said I have noticed over recent years Aussie wine prices dropping so it's getting cheaper.

BTW I have ever lost a bottle

    Cheers

  5. Just stumbled across tripadvisors restaurant ratings and reviews and shock horror one of my favourite restaurants moon Mai was only rated 18th even beaten by world class hamburgers which is 10th.

The cafe connection is number one chivit is two night bizzare is four.

Anyway with those rankings the kebab shop could be in with real a shot at the title.

  6. I have to agree with village farang and other posters about the try before you buy tactic.

My wife's village is 13 km from the city and I have there quite a few times over the past 15 years and I thought there is no way I could live in the village with the chickens crowing at 2 in the mornings dogs barking and yes the neighbors 3 houses down buying some pigs just to stink the village up.However that being said we have 5 rai just outside the village with nice mountain veiws which we are now considering building on.Years ago I thought my mind was made up and I would be living in the city even brought 1rai in the rimkok area bt as I am getting a bit older I am really warming to the country style living as we have great markets around our area with the freshest of produce.I love the city great restaurants safe way to walk around some really great expats that have made me welcome everytime I get there wether its fishing golfing or just having a beer.

My point s that take your time some people like villiage life others think they do and quickly get sick of it .

I will probably spend the night in town after a night of eating and drinking so it's pretty easy for me.

On the education side of things I never really consider Thailand an option but I remember looking up a few schools in chiang Mai and they were expensive. One thing we did do was to put my daughter into a Thai school at the end of kindergarten for 3 months and not one kid could speak English by the time she finished she was speaking excellent Thai and her mother and family over here in oz speak Thai to her all the time to keep up her language skill and that really comes in handy for her family visits to Thailand.

On the rubber trees make sure you do plenty of study in to tree plantations while it can be a lurcrative there are also plenty of pitfalls.

Anyway all the best I probably confused you even more.

Thanks VF for the pics your photos are convincing me more and more Of the beauty of country life in thailand

Thanks VF for the pics your photos are convincing me more and more Of the beauty of country life in thailand and your comments about santinaburi are right I enjoy playing golf there the clubhouse and food are great but to live out there for some reason the place just looks a bit lonely to me.

  7. I get the 10am from syd to bkk it arrives 4.20pm then the 6.20pm bkk to cei arrives around 7.40pm.Shower out for dinner and drinks by 9pm its just that easy these days.

I dont know why your going via chiang mai.

But seeing your from melb i will forgive you mate.Joking

By the way the khao soi restaurant in jet yod is called kor jai and yes its excellent. It also has one of the best sai eua or northern sausage in town.

    Cheers

  8. Just wondering what you guys and girls think of all the different systems of reading writing and speaking thai that are on offer?

Just hoping for some advice in regards to systems on offer before i commit.

Some seem to good to be true like learning to read in a very short time.

I am leaning towards high speed thai however i am open to any advice and suggestions.

    Thanks in advance

  9. Some good threads here and interesting.

Had the gang over last night and durian was on the table again.I had some while drinking red wine and didnt feel any different.Mind you it was not a big amount.

Showed the guys your replies and the results seem 50 50.

So my conclusion is that durians can cause death after to much alcohol.

If someone gets pissed and hits you over the head with one your not getting up.

    Cheers

  10. Sitting around the kitchen table eating durian with family and friends the subject of not drinking alcohol after eating durian came up.

I said its just an old wives tale invented by thai women to get their men to stop drinking.

Especially jungle whiskey apparently raises your body temperature to dangerous levels if taken with durian.

Has there been any studies to prove whether this is true or false.

    Thanks

  11. Last time i was there for the closing of bos and the opening of i cannot think of the bars name down jetyod rd.

This i will be there the day before riccos opening.Seems to be alot of oepning and closing of bars in chiang rai.

Anyway i arrive on the 30th so i might just wander down for a cold one.

  12. Is bo,s place still going or has it changed name?

I also heard there is a pub out near the big C where expats have a drink.

Anyway there is always jetyod and later behind the night bizzare.

I am bound to catch up with a few old heads somewhere along the way

  13. Hi everyone!

I was just wondering where most of you guys go for a drink these days?

I met erwin many years ago when he opened bos place and i was fortunate to be there at the time of its closing and meet quite a few of the locals who had come for the party even though erwin had already gone home.

Anyway i will be up in chiang rai on the 30th and i would like to catch up with a few people if they are still around like limbo dee rob and stewart etc and have a nice cold one with you guys.I know many people come and go but i hope to catch up with some of you guys.

    Thanks.

    Bryan from Sydney

  16. Hi everyone

I am looking for the phone number of the post office at Mae lao in Chiang rai.

For people who know the white temple Wat rongkoon? It is near there just south of Chiang rai.

Anyway the wife has a some business to do and wants to contact that particular post office.

Just wondering if anyone has the number or can get the number of the main post office in Chiang rai and we will take it from there.

I have posted this message on the chiang rai forum but being a saturday maybe there are less users.

Thanks for you help and merry xmas
