  1. But guess what? This will be forgotten again in less than a week. The govt will never do anything effective. Short term, sure. But longer term, unless they put them all out of business, this will continue.

    Just last week. Driving by the weekend market. One tuk tuk driver outside his van, two tourists out of the van. The guy apparently stopped in the middle of knowhere (the entrance to Rama 9 park, weekend market road) and demanded more money. Girl in tears.

    As I was passing by, this guy had his 3 fingers up in the guy´s face, demanding payment. I stopped, yelled at them to jump in the back of the pickup and off we went.

    Gladly would do that again. Scumbags, all of them!

  2. I doubt the Kunyings would like being driven around Silom with their drivers on a bicycle built for two.

    Then they start riding on the sidewalk, the driver on the bbf2 carry the baby with no helmet.

    When they all pull in at the school across from the British Embassy the queue will be long. Get overcharged at the Esso for putting air in tyres (tires), etc etc etc.

    It won´t work in BKK.

  3. This is turning into a nightmare for me. My son is now 18 months old. He walks fine, albeit stumbles here and there like I did when I was drinking as a teenager. :D

    One foot is slightly crooked when he walks. The right foot leans too much to the left so he has a tendency to walk a bit on the left edge of that foot.

    The final straw was today. The 4th. doctor said not to worry, come back in 4 years. :o

    I disagree completely.

    Anyone know where in BKK one can buy these shoes? They are higher on the ankle, made of leather or hard canvas and helps the kids stabilize their foot. I think some have arches on the inside to force the foot to be straight.

    Or am I just being paranoid?

    Tks.

  4. Sorry to hear that. All of the above.. Clear all weeds, plants. Do the usual patrol every so often around the garden. We live in their territory, so it may happen again.

    I have 3 dogs. I cannot imagine how you feel.

  5. The people of Phuket are light years away from what a lot would consider "normal" Thais. Particularly in areas of tourism, where greed prevails.

    You want the old Siam back? Chiang Mai, Chiang Rai, Lopburi, even the southern provinces south of Surat Thani. Otherwise, the rest has been westernized to death and you will never enjoy it.

    You knew full well that your family would be accosted by touts, etc etc. So why complain now?

  6. The fundamental problem here is that the OP is not respected as the father. And he never will. Too late.

    Take the son out of the house, if you can.

    I also moved to Phuket because my wife wanted to be closer to her family. Now, 5 years later, she begs me to agree to leave the island with her and son in tow. She cannot stand them.

    One of the first things I did when my son, now 17 months, was born, was lay down the rules for them to touch him. Wash hands, no smoking, no motoci rides. Wife refuses to ride a bike with him etc etc. The inlaws´house is filthy. Ok, son does not visit until the house is clean.

    He is my son, my rules. Same goes for you, new dad. Your son your freegin´rulz!!

    In my case, the inlaws are some of the most worthless and lazy people around. We live 2 sois away. They never came to help wife with newborn. Even the neighbors and the burmese maids we meet at the local park comment on why they are not helping wife with a new baby.

    Now, 17 months later, thank god, we still control the baby. I do not get into arguments, but the inlaws see my face and they know not to do "it" again.

    In your case, you have options. Your English is better than mine, you have Thai papers, you have a brain. Use it.

    Remove all emotional reasons for your next big decision. Use fact.

    PM me if you want to get together for a more direct discussion.

  7. Just saw it. It appears parts of the eastern part are also updated. Newer than 3 years. More like 2 as the old wooden pier in Chalong is not there (post tsunami).

  8. Do not know why it takes them so long. The East side is at least 4 years, as Macro is not yet built. grrrr

    But, when Fosset was lost in Nevada, overnight they updated the state of Nevada for us to help search for him.

    I am proud that my car is actually showing in my soi.

  9. Real meatloaf. Nothing like the hotel variety.

    From about.com.

    -------------------------------

    Meatloaf has long been a standard main dish in America, and according to John Mariani in "Encyclopedia of American Food And Drink," was first seen in print as early as 1899. For many, meat loaf is an ultimate comfort food, bringing back pleasant childhood memories of family meals.

    There are many ways to cut the calories and enhance the flavor of ordinary meatloaf, from tasty additions to spicy toppings. Ground round is a great choice if you're using beef for your meatloaf, since excess fat in fattier ground meats is absorbed by breadcrumbs. Use soft bread crumbs in place of dry for a moister meatloaf, or substitute grated potato or carrots for a portion of the meat, which will also eliminate some of the calories. Baking the meatloaf on a rack will keep it out of the fatty drippings. Sharon Tyler Herbst, author of "The Food Lover's Tiptionary," describes a method for making your own meat loaf pan by piercing holes in an inexpensive loaf pan then setting it on a rack in a larger baking pan.

    Another great thing about meatloaf is that you can bake it in the oven, microwave, electric roaster, or crock pot. Truly, the only limit is your imagination! If Mom's basic meatloaf has lost its appeal, try one of this recipe

    or create your own with some of the tips below.

    Enjoy!

    Tips and flavor-enhancing ideas:

    # For more flavor and a juicier meatloaf, add about 1/4 cup of tomato juice, wine, or broth for each pound of meat.

    # Bake in muffin tins or mini-loaf pans for individual servings.

    # Use leftovers sliced in sandwiches or crumbled in sauces or chili.

    # Replace some of the liquid in the recipe with red wine or dark beer.

    # Add a cup of grated or shredded cheese to the meatloaf and top with more cheese about 10 minutes before it's done.

    # Replace liquids with red wine or dark beer.

    # Make the finished meatloaf extra fancy by frosting with mashed potatoes and topping with cheese; return to the oven and cook until the cheese is melted.

    This meatloaf is packed with flavor, and it's delicious served with salsa.

    INGREDIENTS:

    * 1 pound ground beef, lean

    * 3/4 to 1 pound ground veal

    * 1 egg

    * 1/2 cup fine dry bread crumbs

    * 1 can (approx. 4 1/4 ounces) chopped ripe olives

    * 1 can (4 ounces) chopped mild green chili pepper

    * 1 cup corn kernels

    * 1/2 cup salsa, plus more for topping

    * 1 teaspoon onion powder

    * 1/2 teaspoon garlic powder

    * 1/8 teaspoon pepper

    * 1/4 teaspoon salt, or to taste

    PREPARATION:

    Combine all ingredients except topping in a bowl and combine until blended. A wire potato masher works well for mixing meatloaf. Pack into a loaf pan and bake at 350° for about 1 hour and 15 minutes.

    Serves 8.

    No need for some german wired hazelsomethingorother, or ice cubes. This is the real meatloaf. I may do it with ground pork, as the wife does not eat beef. So I make two. A small one for her with pork and a large one for me.

    Enjoy!

  10. There is a huge difference between clinical depression and so called expat depression. One a chemical issue with the brain and the other a lifestyle change brought on by issues in life.

    I have clinical depression. Have had it for 20 odd years. For a few years, I was not medicated. Mid 90s I was. Paxil brought on suicide thoughts. Zoloft did not help and never took Prozac. At the end, I stopped the medication. It was not helping and it made matters worse.

    So I moved to Thailand. It did not make it worse, but it did not make it better.

    I found that having funny friends helps a lot. And watching the strange things that Thais do in their lives and lack of complete common sense, makes me laugh.

    The downside is that for the most part, changes in lifestyle does not really help the clinically depressed. It helps, but it is not a cure-all.

    After 6 odd years here, I was enjoying life more. I had a good friend who backstabbed me and accused of me something I did not do, and it brought the depression on, or made it worse. It takes a long time to recover again. Thank you, my German "friend".

    I have a wife and a lovely son, 17 months old. They make me happy. Short term, for me, as they go to bed or I do not see them, the worries of life come back again. But having a family helps a great deal.

    With schooling coming up in a year or two, I may have to move back to the UK. That will make my depression worse.

    But my only advise to a clinical depressed person: have happy friends. It really makes a difference. You can draw from that and laugh and it makes you look forward to life again. The laughter of a toddler is incredibly happy for me. Have those friends understand you, also helps.

  11. I would try the Gazette first. They are overpriced but there is really nowhere else to place it. Phuket Post, even with their spam control, does not have a lot of hits on the site.

    I would suggest also TV. As their new classifieds system is now broken down by city and region.

    Never sold a car yet. But mine is up for sale. 8-))

  12. Much easier. And it is Romanized.. And I think Malaysia is friendlier.

    If not Thailand, would you consider places like Penang in Malaysia?....was considering what alternatives there are to Thailand but still offering the weather,beaches and value for money?

    Only been to Penang briefly a couple of times many years back (Visa runs!) and found it a bit dull and too hot! But I quite like the sound of the "Highlands" (??) I think over on the other side (top right?!) for the weather........maybe some day I will go and explore. the folk seemed nice.

    If I was a betting man I would not count on Malaysia remaining "Value for money" over the longer term, whereas Thailand on the other hand has a lot of fundamentals "going for it" (??!!) in this respect.

    I guess they speak Malay in Malaysia -anyone know if it is easier to learn than Thai?! :o
