  1. Did I read somewhere that Mr. Anwar, the man going to Kalim from North Patong pleaded guilty to assaulting the tuk tuk driver and paid a 1000 baht fine. Maybe he was just trying to get out of town and wanted his passport back. Or maybe he was truly the one who assaulted the driver. If you agree to 150 baht, then pay it. If you are too stupid to know you are agreeing to pay too much, then you just paid for your education.

  2. Forgot to mention that they have a special on their website with 25% off now. They taught me to dive. My friend who is a rescue diver said their equipment is some of the best he has seen. I was scared of a fly by night outfit and he dives in Thailand 3 times a year. And no, I don't own any interest in them. I don't post much, but when I find something good, I am happy to pass it along.

  3. Without a doubt, Sunrise Diving. www.sunrisediving.net. Their equipment is top notch and the staff is tops. They are located in Patong near Bangla Road on the Thaweewong (2nd road). English owned/operated. Office number is 076292052. They have earned the National Geographic distinction. I keep their card under the glass on my desk. The trip to the Similan Islands is wonderful.

  4. another suggestion is BYD Lofts. they are located directly in front of Andaman Beach Suites and in front of jungle boys i think (sorry if i got the name wrong).

BYD lofts are located in the Aroonsam Plaza across from the Amanta House.

9th floor is another location that is top notch. A little pricey, but worth it. 9th floor is located West of Aroonsam plaza. You will see the sign. Steaks, seafood, Italian. Good wine list etc...

P.S. Breakfast by the Amanta House is great if you select the croissant breakfast sandwich. :o

  5. Despite many trips to Thailand over the past 7 years, I have never been to Hua Hin. I have been from Kanchanaburi to Ubon, Chiang Mai to Phuket but have never made the short trip to Hua Hin. What is it like and what is there to do. I have read about it, but I am interested in a recent assessment of the pros and cons of the place compared to Phuket, Pattaya, Samui, Koh Chang, etc. as a beach destination. Thanks in advance for your comments/suggestions.

  6. I went to Surin to visit the ex girlfriends family and had to do the obligatory shopping at the "mall". They lived out in the sticks. The GF's dad got all dressed up in his old army jacket for the trip to the store. He made it up the escalator alright. However, the GF had to ride back up the escalator to help him get on it for the downward journey. I just kept walking so as not let him know I saw. Face must be maintained. I still will not forget the look of sheer terror on his face at that moving stairway. He must have thought he was on Mars. Bless his heart.

  7. It's Old El Paso as in the West Texas town of El Paso. Not passo. As the commercial says, the rest may have been made in NYC. Pace Picante Medium is a better quality if you can find it.

  8. I have no problem with a charge higher for foreigners at government parks and buildings. It is their country. Maybe the U.S. should do the same thing and I wouldn't have to listen to a spanish option on every call to a utility company.

  9. Suggest 9th floor at Sky Inn, Patong. Real European cocktail bar feel, great food, stunning views over Patong Bay. A litle pricey, but well worth it.

I agree totally. However, the girls at the 9th floor are distracting if you are with a girlfriend. I used to live in an apartment on the 9th floor and it is hard to pass by every night. And the food isn't bad either.

  10. One thing I cannot find in Ubon or in Phuket is plain corn chips like doritos. You can get the flavored up junk but no plain chips. No Tex Mex worth anything has been found yet. Mexican food in Thailand is Mexican food, not Tex Mex. The mexican food tastes like it was made in North Dakota, bland, salty and boring.

  11. Obviously it's nothing like Phuket or BKK but what's the deal with bars etc. in Ubon?

Is it something closer to what's in Udon (a soi with about 10-20 bars with 3 or 4 girls in each) or closer to what khon kaen has - about 3 farang bars with no BGs.

Is their places to go party no strings attached?

try the rock. near the movie theater.

  12. Seeing the plethora of Duty Free shops on arrival at Suvarnabhumi airport the question occurred to me...

Do the Thai revenue men still pull you and fine you for buying those duty frees after you have gone through customs?

If they do it does seem a bit strange to be able to buy on arrival.

I have never been stopped in 8 trips.

  13. if the internet would ever get fast enough in thailand, a slingbox would be great. However, check the requirements on the upload for a decent picture. even cable internet is not really fast enough uploading from the u.s.. I wonder if anyone has experience with slingbox and could enlighten all of us.

  14. First trip to the new airport in Jan. I went to Phuket domestic and returned then out on Feb 4. Luggage was lost in L.A. not the airports fault. I must admit that getting the lost luggage people to answer the phone the following 2 days was impossible. One would think that someone would answer the darn phone. Anyway, my luggage showed up at the hotel 3 days later. Just golf clubs anyway. The airport itself was painless. I had someone pick me up upon international arrival and so I dont know about the daytime taxi line. When I arrived back in bkk from phuket, there was no taxi line at all and my bags were loaded on a saturday evening promptly. arrived 5:00 pm. Took the toll and no problems getting to ratchadapisek in 25 minutes. cab fair with the toll and 50 baht surcharge was less than 300 bt. I found the airport on international and domestic to be very good. Bags were offloaded faster than L.A. for sure. Moving walkways worked and they were certainly better than the elevator nightmare at Don Muang. International to Domestic did not involve the long walk down the tunnel and was merely upstairs. Fast food was not near the gate as before, but just eat early before going to the gate. I must admit that I still wax poetic for the old Don Muang. Perhaps it is just nostalgia. Anyway, I might just be getting my wish.

  15. The Democrats took over the Senate and House and right away told China to help fix

the trade imbalance, China replied by saying they will move their assets out of US dollars

thus the dollar tanked today and beyond.

Leave it to Liberals to mess things up :o

With all due respect, The dollar actually went up slightly after the election. the dollar has been on the slide. it used to be that you could chart the baht to drop in high tourist season and then rise again in the summer to 40ish. The reasons for the drop in the dollar are multifaceted and numerous. China's emergence in the world economy is one. the deficit in the u.s. and the trade balance another. The fed in the u.s. controls the interest rates and that may or may not have much to do with it. All the pundits i see say that the dollar will not rebound as robust as before, but may take a small upswing in january. go to forex discussions for more.

Also, When I first started going to thailand in January of 2002 the baht was 44 to a dollar. It dropped to 36.5 with the republicans in complete control during the entire time. Just for the record. they may be powerless to do anything about it. They are pretty powerless now in any event.

  16. Does anyone know where to get disposable one day contact lenses cheaply in Bangkok?

I paid 400 baht per box in MBK. Do you know of any cheaper places than that?

oops forgot to mention that they were 'focus dailies'

Does anybody know where to get the cheap? I'd be interested too as not sure if cheaper than UK

i got some cheaply in phuket on the beach road near bangla last year. However, i would be interested in cheap contacts in bkk as well. posting so it will be back on top

  17. Obviously when it comes to a procedure like vision correction price would not be an issue. I am just curious about the 3 and if people have experience with it? I am leaning to the Wavefront one (Ultimate) might as well do it with the best procedure available eh?

I had my procedure done before these newer technologies came out so no personal experience with it. but my understanding is that the best techniqe depends on the individal eye. Best to go for a consultation and ask what the pros and cons are for each procedure specific to your eyes.

Lasix in U.S. $1400 for both eyes with 20/20 guarantee. 4 buddies had it done and extremely satisfied.

  18. My mother saw in TV about a Tiger Tempel in the North (or at least she things it is north).

    I searched and I found that link:http://www.tigertemplethailand.com/

In TV there was a lot of information how the monks are working with the tiger and they had a lot tigers, but that page looks a bit commercial. Is it the "real" Tiger Tempel or just another tempel which has also 1 tiger.

    Outside of Kanchanaburi
