  1. Yes XBMC would be pretty easy to set up on the Raspberry Pi there are ready made "images"

that you install to SD card and boot right into XBMC ( it will always be XBMC not Kodi for me )

you then need to configure XBMC to suit your needs

there is a learning curve it is not just plug and play the advantage is ( eventually) you have more of an understanding how things work

and can set things up as you like.

  2. Anyone used one? What could an average user do with the Raspberry Pi that might make it worthwhile buying?

I use 2 of the old model B Raspberry Pi's

1 with 256 MB of ram runs as a NAS server, Transmission ( bit torrent ) and Myql database for XBMC

the second one with 512 MB ram is running XBMC connected to a 50 inch plasma TV both work rather well.

Setting them up was a "challenge" ( XBMC bit is easiest ) they are slow at times and there are hickups now and again like every computer.

I think I've had my moneys worth out of them they are sold as educational and they are another plus for me is that they are made in the UK.

  3. Problem is, most of the cybercafes now survive as gaming dens, filled with yelling kids day and night.

They allways where full of gamers.....the internet cafes bread and butter they sit and play for hours on end.

Compared to the " I only checked my email for 2 minutes " customer that moan about a 10 baht mimumum charge

    the gamers are great.

Still it is surprsing there are any left at all, after buying all equipment, the correct licences for OS and games then the government saying

all activity needs to be logged ( more equipment ) and CCTV installed + rent + electricity + wages profit ???

  4. If you have a work permit you can buy a condo with the money already in your Thai bank account.

This is what the land office have told my Wife but they also ask for proof of address and its where to get this proof of address thats illuding her, they mentioned immigration but a call to them got nowhere.

Maybe they mean "certificate of residence" like you need for opening a bank account or getting a driving licence.

  5. Look for this logo on the new TV

It will have a built in DVB-T2 tuner so no need for a set top box.
I would go for an unsmart TV with no DVB-T2 tuner as they are now cheaper and you can pick and choose
to add your own smart bit for example with a set top box for Terestrial TV, an android media player for IPTV ( XBMC) and aDVD/Blueray player
having the features in seperate "boxes" safeguards you in event of failure of one component or redundency /change of standards.
  6. My wife has the old type driving license. It's valid until she's 60 or 70.

She claims, that if she change it to the new type, it has to be renewed every 5 years.

Does anyone know if that is correct?.

She should be able to get the new type (as in plastic with photo) valid for "life"

Even though they don't issue "life time" licences any more they will convert the old paper types to plastic with all benefits grandfathered in.
