  1. I need either a crankcase for a Yamaha f100 outboard, or maybe a 60-115hp motor if I find a good value on a secondhand motor.

The Yamaha dealer in Phuket wants 50k for the used part, or 90k for new, which seems like a crazy price to me.  So I'm looking for other options/markets/sites.  I've looked around facebook marketplace etc.  I actually even ordered the part on ebay from a USA seller, but after a month of waiting ebay refunded me saying they couldn't ship it internationally, with no reason given.

Just looking for some help finding a fair price on the part so I can get the boat back in the water before my dad visits.

    Thanks everyone.

As a general rule, a simple export business (with no Thai employees or office) seems to be OK without a work permit. Indeed, it is totally acceptable on entry to Thailand visa exempt to state that you are here to attend trade shows and buy products for export. If you want greater certainty about your specific intentions, I would suggest talking with the local labour office to check if they foresee any problems.

Thank you for that @BritTim, that's what I was hoping.  I can't really see why anyone would see it as a problem, but wasn't sure.  Maybe I'll chat with the labour office anyway just for fun ;)

  3. Hi all, if one has a retail business based in the USA, lives in Thailand on a Thai Child Dependent Visa (Non-immigrant O), would there be any issue with exporting products from Thailand to USA for retail sale in the USA? There would be no need or desire for an office or employees here.

I'm a bit allergic to paperwork, so if it's a huge pain I'll probably just skip it, and continue importing from elsewhere. But if the attitude is to make it easy for foreign companies to buy and export, I may pursue it.

I'd appreciate any input, resources, and sharing of past experiences, thank you.
  4. Hi guys, thanks again for all the info.  It's been about a year since I posted.  My daughter and her mother (as well as her teenage daughter) now live in Phuket near me.  I support them financially and visit daily.  I'm currently on an ED visa with about 8 more months to go on that, so I'm thinking now might be a good time to get started on this child/dependent O visa (not sure the exact correct term).

I would really appreciate any recommendation of law firms who are experienced and capable with this sort of visa, with good customer service at a reasonable price.  I've done some searching around and looking at reviews of various firms, haven't yet found one I feel comfortable with.  I'd like to do a brief phone or email consultation with maybe 2 or 3 firms to tell them my situation and get their proposal.

I'm not sure if it matters much where the firm is located, like if there might be any advantage to using a firm with an office in Phuket or not.

Thanks again for your advice everyone, it has been very helpful.

I have no idea.  Agent quoted me an ED visa for 1 year and I don't have to leave...and I've been here 2 years already.

Dart12, which province are you in?  Possibly care to share your agent's contact info with me?  Is that ok here?  Or is direct messaging a thing here?

I know some other students here recently did the same.  Basically paid an extra fee to an immigration office in another province, 13,000 or 14,000 baht I think.

    Thanks for the info.

Where did you get this information about Ranong border?

But yes, you are gonna have to pay if you don't want to leave.  And leaving is expensive too.  Not sure why your school wants you to leave if they already issued you the ED visa though.

The teacher at my language school had heard that, I think from the Phuket immigration officers she keeps in contact with.

Talk to an agent, they will tell you if it's still possible or not. I imagine it will be because the borders are still closed. What type visa did you arrive on and are you sure your ED visa is still valid?

Thank you.  My teacher had heard the Ranong border would be opening.  My last ED visa ended about a year ago and I've been on these 2 month "covid extensions" since.  I have paid the school for my next ED visa already, but we haven't yet been able to start it, immigration wasn't allowing new ED visas to be started lately, just the 2 month extensions.

  8. Hello Hive Mind,

Now that the 2 month "amnesty visas"/"covid extensions"/whatever you want to call it seem to be finished, I'm looking at my options to start my ED visa with the minimal possible hassle and travel.

I paid for my ED visa just before all the travel restrictions started, and it seems its time to finally start it.

I prefer to avoid traveling out of Thailand and back into Thailand just to start this visa, if possible.  My school has had some students pay a "fee" to an immigration office in another province to start the ED visa without leaving Thailand.  I'm not sure if that option is still available.

    Any thoughts/tips/contacts/resources?

Thanks in advance, I really appreciate any help.

  9. Hi everyone,

I've read the basics about the Dependent (Non-O) Visa, but was wondering about a few details.  Any help is much appreciated.  My questions are:

    1. I live in Phuket, and my daughter was born in Phuket 6 months ago.  Her mom owns a house in Phattalung and that is the address we gave for her birth certificate, which was registered in Phattalung.  I rent a house in Phuket, and they stay with me sometimes, and sometimes they stay at her mom's house in Phattalung.  Currently they are unable to visit Phuket due to travel restrictions.  My question is, can I do the visa application here in Phuket?  Or would I need to apply in Phattalung?

    2. I was on ED visa, which expired in January.  I have been doing the 2 month visa amnesty extensions since then, which my school helps me with.  It's easy, I just show up every 2 months for a photo and pay 1900 baht.  Does anyone know how long these might continue?  I have about 6 weeks left on my current extension, so I'm considering getting started on the Dependent Visa.  But if I can get more extensions I might just keep doing that for now.

    3. Are there any agents in Phuket who are experienced with Dependent Visas and charge a reasonable fee?  (hopefully ok to ask here?)  My friend just finished his Dependent Visa, and said it took him 4-5 trips to immigration, but the agents he looked at wanted 20,000 baht, which seems quite high for the amount of work involved.

    4. If there's anything you'd like to point out that maybe I didn't think to ask, I welcome any helpful input.

Thanks as always, there are some of you in here who have really helped me out a lot over the years.  It's much appreciated.

  10. Sorry if it's repetitive.  Honestly I don't understand what the difference is.  The terms seem to be used somewhat interchangeably in my experience.  Below is a screenshot and also the link below that to the full document if you're curious.  Thanks a lot for any insight.

  11. Hello,

My Thai friend wants to travel to Phuket to visit family, but needs a covid test before going. She doesn't have much money, and the testing center she found is charging 3000 baht.  Anyone know of a place in/near Phattalung with free or reasonably priced testing?  Thank you!

There is an agent the PCS center recommends on the their website. http://www.pcscenter.sb.police.go.th/eng/

But I cannot get onto the site due it not opening for some unknown reason.

There is a button on the left side of the page that says outsource on it.  The fees mentioned are around 3000 baht.

Thank you Joe.  I also can't view the site at the moment.  Maybe I'll call/email them.

  13. I'm a US Citizen and need a Thai Police "Clearance" (criminal background check)  for immigration purposes to another country.

I understand I can do this in person in Bangkok, or hire a lawyer to do it on my behalf.

In person the cost is 100 baht (details here: https://photos.state.gov/libraries/thailand/591452/iv/082013_thaipolicecert.pdf)

I've seen a few lawyer websites advertising this service for around 10,000 baht or higher.  This strikes me as quite high for submitting a couple photocopies.

I'd love recommendations for reliable lawyers who offer this service at a better price.

I could go in person, but I'm in Phuket and life is a bit busy at the moment, so would be nice to avoid the trip.

Thank you for any advice or referrals.

Having a child and being an absent father is the cruelest thing you could ever do to a child.

It is downright selfish and just plain wrong.

I don't think he said he planned to be absent, did he?  Seems like you're maybe jumping to conclusions...

Hang on - If you enjoy being alone, which is perfectly understandable, what are you doing around your wife all day if you're not working the business with her and your kid is at school? Why not drop the kids at school in the morning, cook the meals for the day, then just <deleted> off somewhere for the afternoon whenever you feel like it? Maybe then you'd enjoy your kid's and your wife's company in the evening.

As men, our freedom is an integral part of us in a way that just does not apply to women, they are also far more social than us. Don't let your whole life revolve around your family.

Agreed.  I feel the same way.  Maybe join a nearby coworking space, work from a favorite cafe, or rent a small office space.  I think it's natural for the man to "go out hunting" (now it's going to the office/work in the modern world) in the daytime and then join the family in the evening ????  Space to concentrate and get some time alone is something I need too.

  16. I've heard great reviews of Dr. Suppakrit at Bangkok Hospital in Phuket, but they're also the most expensive.  I'm wondering if any of you can recommend a great doctor at other hospitals on the island?

I've heard that many of the private hospitals/doctors often push for a c-section, but the other hospitals do not (which I like).  I don't need fancy decor like at Bangkok, I'm just looking for a doctor with a good reputation and who speaks decent English.

FWIW I'm American and the mom is Thai.

One last thing, I read in a post from about 4 years ago that many of the hospitals don't allow the father in the delivery room, is that still true?

    Thank you for any info!

They have changed the link since I post in July. Now here. https://www.thaicgny.com/english-version-for-visa-and-legalization-service/visa-service/non-immigrant-visa/

You would not be apply for it here in Thailand unless you are working for a registered company.

    1. That might be possible.

    2. Not possible until after the baby is born.

You can apply for 60 day extensions at immigration now. Two of those may allow you stay until March when the baby is born.

Just one clarification about the 60 day extensions please.  I'm on an ED visa currently, are extensions possible/probable for me just the same as someone who entered on a tourist visa or visa exemption?

    Thank you Joe

Very helpful Joe, that idea hadn't occurred to me.  Thanks again for your time and all the info.

You can do it by mail but only if you are in the states.

You can apply at the embassy in DC or one of the official Thai consulate in New York, Chicago or Los Angeles.

The embassy has removed their visa requirements since they are only issuing visas for those applying for certificates of entry.

Info is here on the New York consulate website. https://www.thaicgny.com/ภาษาอ-งกฤษ-english-version/visa-service/doc-non-im-b/

It is the last one on the list and the only multiple entry non-b visa they will issue.

Was trying to post this last night but the forum crashed luckily it saved my post.

Hi Joe, thanks again for all the info.  I tried to visit the link you sent, but I got a message that the page is no longer there.  I wonder if there is somewhere else I could find info about the application.  I also wonder if during these unusual times I may be able to apply from within Thailand (again, my company is based in the USA).

    My other possible options are:
1 - doing another ED visa, which I think my teacher here in Phuket can arrange without me leaving the country, she's getting back to me about that.
2 - a "dependent visa", as my girlfriend is pregnant.  However, the baby is due in March 2021, and my current visa expires December 30, 2020.  So I'm not sure if that's an option before the baby arrives.  We don't plan to marry, so the marriage visa isn't in my plans.

Basically I'm just trying to figure out what makes sense for this coming year, to ride out all the covid weirdness and restricted travel. After that I'm thinking either the dependent visa and/or business visa should work.

Any thoughts guys?  Thanks a bunch, this thread has been really helpful.
