  1. >>>>>Does anybody know where I can purchasse either an Ipod or a Creative Zen in Chiang Mai? :o

Absolutely no problem they are sold in a lot of places. The 4th floor of Robinson Airport mall would have the most selection and there is a shop called Apple which is all Ipods etc.

The creative zen etc are everywhere.

  2. Dont be put off by the sarcastic answers... There are definitely some properties that are quieter than others. Probably the worst noises are from traffic and you can find properties that are isolated from busy roads. Over in the western part of CM Airplane noise is an issue but only during the day.

The dog barking is not so bad because most Thai dogs are underfed and lazy and don't have the BTU's to bark much. If you look around you should be able to find a place on a dead end street that meets your needs. Another poster pointed out picking a place on the outskirts will be better for noise and I would agree.

  3. Hillside 3 is pretty decent. The rooms are 5K baht a month and the building is newer feeling and clean and has a swimming pool. I looked at a room a month or so ago and they came with a large tv and highspeed internet was an option.

I also noticed there are some private ones advertised sometime on Citynews.

Its on the mountain side of Nimmanhemin and its right next door to Powerhouse gym. I think its either soi 9 or 11.

There are a lot of other choices but I thought that one was good value. I rented at hillside 4 which is really nice but pricey at 8 to 12K baht.

  4. I live in Hillside 4. I really like it.... The small units are not huge at 45 sqm but very good quality and there are a lot of units being renovated.... Great views. Lots of amenities like 2 swimming pools and a health club....

I just rent and you can expect to pay between 8,000 and 12,000 Bhat a month for a studio. I find the place quiet and run well. Very good restaurant and room service at reasonable prices. If you can afford it I highly recommend it... I like it because I dont want to worry about security and maintenance issues. Also its nicknamed Falang Towers since so many westerners live there so you will have someone to talk to and the staff can speak some english so you don't feel like a complete retard.

It is a little funky getting there but with a little practice its not hard to do it efficiently. Its particularly easy on a scooter to pull a U turn at Rin Kham intersection. Its really nice location wise because you can walk to Central shopping center in about 5 minutes as well as some markets nearby.

  5. Well aside from riduculous arguments about farangs being all criminals or not criminals.... Just a general observation of being in thailand for a month now is that most thai's are not law abiding when it comes to driving but very proper in other areas or behavior.. I think people are just people and there are always a percentage who are really breaking societies laws.

Back to the thread now. These guys took a risk and lost big time... Trafficking drugs is a risk business. If the drug was not illegal then it would not be worth much... Just look at how cheap it is in Nepal or Jamaica... I remember being in Jamaica and buying a quarter pound for $30 and it was a tourist price. So anyway these guys were trying to profit from the economics of marijuana being an illegal drug and got caught.. There lives are most likely going to be very different now and will have a lot of time to think about things. The root of their problem was greed and taking high risks.

  6. Greetings

New to CM and renting at Doi View off of Nimmanhemin.. I like this side of town.. Less crowded and good views...

I have a feeling I am over paying for what I am getting... Its a 30 sq M apartment with great views on the 7th floor but no kitchen for 9600 a month.. They add on 1500 a month for DSL internet access and charge utilities on top.

I am okay with that price range but hoping I could spend the same or less and get a kitchen and more space and maybe have access to a pool as well as decent internet.

    Any recomendations?

  7. I have a solution.. Buy a locking Alum Briefcase.. I got mine off ebay for about $40 USD and they are quite slim and designed for specific laptop sizes.. .. Comes in very handy.. I can lock my laptop, IPOD, Accessories, cell phone and copies of documents cash etc... The case has a combination lock and is padded to protect the contents.. I then use a bicycle cable combination lock to lock it to something immobile like a drain pipe etc... Never had a problem in a mulitude of foreign countries... Provides a nice protective function also.

On a couple of occasions I have handed it to Hotel reception people to keep an eye on it.... Sure a person could cut drill out the pop rivets that hold the hinges on or use a crowbar to pry the case open in which case your screwed but it keeps anyone from ransacking your stuff who is less than a hardened determined criminal. You could probably put some sticker on it in the local language like "UNICEF baby vomit samples" or something equally offensive.

    Good luck!!!!!
