  1. Wife and I have been married 33 years now and I totally trust her with our money. Or rather, we totally trust one another.

In the first few years of marriage she had to learn about money and lots of other commercial matters, but over the years has become quite competent and careful with managing costs and money. In fact I am usually the one prompting her to spend a bit on herself. We do talk about everything we spend money on and we have no secrets, even on the small stuff.

We have separate superannuation funds but all our spending money is in a joint account which she looks after, paying all the bills, getting out cash when needed, even giving me a some if I ask. (I can never remember my PINs). She also pays our credit cards bills - she has her own credit cards - does transfers to investment accounts when appropriate, to our Thai bank accounts when needed, and transfers of our various donations.

She records in a note book everything we spend, which helps us keep track of expenditure and enables us to check this against bank and credit card statements. I do cast an eye on this note book as well as the bank statements from time to time just to keep up to date and check the banks are not making mistakes or ripping us off.

I expect factors contributing to this situation include her being well educated, me being an accountant, my brother is an accountant, several of her family are accountants, and all members of both our families are in different ways successful in jobs & business and are careful with money, so she has always been an environment of discussing and managing money. (I guess in this environment you either become careful and competent with money or you slit your wrists !)

  2. Agree with Mamborobert.

So, OP, if you still have strong ties with your home country, regardless of the nature of those ties, there is a lot of sense in retaining a house or apartment providing this is not a burden.

Following our retirement, my wife and I are planning to spend much more time in Thailand. But we have family and investments in my home country so we think is is worth retaining some type of permanent base there. We are however considering the idea of selling our very nice spacious home and replacing it with a smaller, less costly, easier to maintain, more secure apartment. Similar to what we have in CM. We do own a nice caravan but don't see that as a long term accommodation option for us as elderly citizens. Nor is it great for visitors. I also said to our sons, that they can expect to inherit our properties but we will spend the cash, so I suppose we should retain some properties for them !!

  3. I can't help but wonder if those worrying about plastic containers and taking great care with the water they drink at home, particularly when it looks OK and tastes OK, also worry about the food they eat, the air they breathe and the surfaces and people they touch.

We need to keep perspective on these sorts of things.  There are bugs and chemicals in everything we eat, drink, breathe and touch and our bodies can deal with most of it.  If your tap water is bad either use a filter, boil it or buy drinking water, and get on with life.

In relation to the water in CM, in our condo it is good - its clear, no smell and tastes fine. Have no concerns brushing teeth & washing mouth out, washing salads with it and dishes and glasses.  However, we do boil our drinking water just to be on the safe side because we drink so much of it.  But I do wonder if it is a waste of time when I do drink iced water and coffee from all sorts of food places and coffee shops, and eat from street vendors.

  4. My wife knits hats for babies, especially prem. babies, ands sends them to hospitals in mountains to give to poorer new mums. We also pay the annual running costs for a school bus to ensure kids in a mountain area get to school. Would like to do more volunteer work too. Pity the law is not more flexible
