It's now getting laughable attempting to play the system! Why would an address in Cambodia fool the Thai immigration in to thinking your just a 'Regular visitor' instead of a serial visa runner? Why not just bite the bullet and move to Cambodia completely? After all, you keep telling us how easy and great it is now you can go stay for 3 years?
I really do wonder sometimes

I reside in Australia but retire soon.

    Was only suggesting.

I had interests in Thailand I sold off in early 2015 when I realised the junta was there to stay.

  2. I also believe getting accreditation for researching Thai culture for publication might solve a one year stint problem.

( incidentally the new 3 year Cambodia visa next month allows unlimited entries- this would at least allow you to have somewhere to run on any rejection)

Having a Cambodian address proofs your also only on a regular vacation .( To Thai authorities)

Given   The situation in Thailand .....being based elsewhere may in future become a more enlightened choice

  3. Nice try.

But  Boracay Island  in PI has better beaches than Thailand .

    So many better places.

Had to laugh at the scamming comments..( Thailand is leader )

    Back to question.

The cycle of coups makes Thailand a crippled long term state.

As civil unrest is always seemingly possible.

    Retirement is about peace.

    Westerners are also less welcome.

And truth is in 20 years Thailand will be a colony of Mainland China State at this rate.

We would have long moved on.

Or be under such strict tagging and rules and regulations it wouldn't be nice.

    Happening now.

Thailand is over War is approaching.

    After that communists will swoop

I believe that Thailand isn't 'foreigner friendly'. Furthermore, it is apparent that your stay in Thailand could at any time, without any reason, be revoked by the authorities, (if they so wished). Foreigners have almost no rights at all, and it is for this reason that you should be prepared to leave at a moments notice. Buying property, or investing is not advised, as this would also leave you both exposed and in many cases, falling foul to the Thai law if you were forced to suddenly leave.

Foreigners are generally looked upon by Thais as merely 'cash cows', and no more. Those thinking that they have any kind of recognized status will be somewhat disappointed. The laws which govern the country constantly change, (depending on the political climate at the time), and could be described as extremely xenophobic (discriminatory)  towards foreigners, which in most 'civilized' countries would be classed as an infringement of your human rights.

The current trend in Thailand towards foreigners is very grim indeed. Recently, we have witnessed more stringent controls, on both movement, and other visa requirements, which were almost non-existent before. Therefore, if this behavior by the authorities continues, then it will become almost intolerable to live in Thailand as an expat.

Yes current trend is getting more and more like Jews in Nazi Germany before it became obvious ....early signs are being tagged

I'm not going to enjoy writing this post. But I have been experiencing a lot of antipathy towards me of late (not personal - towards all white western males). I live on the darkside of Pattaya - about 20 mins on the motorbike to Beach Rd. When I first moved here (and in the preceding couple of years), I thought this area was quite cool as it was fairly quiet and the people were friendly. Fast forward 5 years and I'm beginning to feel unwelcome, both on the darkside and in the Pattaya/Jomtien area. Whereas young Thais were mostly indifferent towards you in the past, now there is quite open disdain - even hostility in some cases. Of course, there are still many lovely Thai people around whom I enjoy meeting as I go about my daily chores. But the level of indifference/disdain/resentment is growing ever stronger - it's not my imagination, it's very palpable. I've lived in Thailand for 3 decades, so I think I have a reasonable "handle" on local conditions.

So, how does this answer the OP's question? Unfortunately, I shall not be around to find out as I intend leaving soon. Part of my reason for going home (apart from wanting to spend my remaining years with family) is that I don't feel quite as comfortable as I did here, even going back just 5 years. There is a lot I still enjoy about living on the darkside, but I fear that the next time some young smart-asp decides to "buzz" the farang on his motorcycle (and put my life in danger) to prove he's the superior Thai male, then I might just snap. And get the sh1t kicked out of me. I can't live in a village like Mr VF above (sorry, mate - I'm a city slicker :) ). So I don't see a comfortable or relaxed lifestyle ahead for us WWMs (white western males) in my area - and it's that lifestyle that I desire in my retirement.

...Something is happening ..so many people are sensing Danger here now.

The attitude to westerners (has ) and is ..changing ...no it's not imagined.
The young are perceiving us through a prism of military passion .
Inspired by ""us and them "" propaganda .
    Nationalistic , xenophobic pronouncement s .
    Monks outside embassies burning flags.

    Will we increasingly die ?
    Be at risk ?

I left ...( for ticking yes)
History shows military governments in struggles with minds and hearts slowly undergo a metamorphosis into something different.
    Harsh , more paranoid .
Preference to people from non human rights countries.

    Criminals know this .
    Case closed .
    Far more easily for them.

The hatred in the eyes you see on the dark side is real.

Your message is equally of real.
Time will cocoon only so long the transformation.
    But it's there.

The young are told we are bad .
    Don't understand Thainess.
    Interfering ...bad.

Hard times make us a prime target to take out some whiskey anger at 3am .

    Be careful.

  6. Bla Bla Bla, just another failure expad that did not make it in Thailand and now need to

make people think that the failure was Thailand and not him.

Grow up get a life, no one miss you here

Yeap...Xenophobic Thailand with its nationalistic ideologies and dicriminating Alien Business Laws plus even new conditions for the AEC (eg....doctors wanting to practice in Thailand must speak the thai language) etc......I just pray that the rest of Asean and AEc expels Thailand. THis country is beyond salvation and I pray it sinks deeper.

They are seeking some sort of support....embarrassing really.

You obviously have a clear perception of the situation in Thailand regards its xenophobic tendencies and increased Nationalist mantras to try and transcend scrutiny within domestic eyes .

But internationally it is has long since hit the proverbial iceberg and water has begun to flow into the hull.

    This ship is lost.

You have no need to wish this upon its current captain.

Once the article 44 was signed the Americans relayed its allies and players to take them to task.

    Prior leniency is gone.

Count the things that have been thrust into their faces since April 1st.

The Charter was the final act of defiance by them.

A military now out of its depth ...and clearly disinterested in democracy.

And spare us the branding and versions of what it could or might be.

Reality is they don't even have the international rights to decide Jack S$it .

It is about people deciding ....that doesn't happen you get belted.

That's the formula in South east Asia ....we all know that.

First the sanctions to make them look bad -

Because they have been covering stuff up

    Fudging figures.

    Talking it up.

    Claiming countries understand.

    Lets see.

Let the water pour in ( sanctions)

Cut some support and demean them in world opinion .

( rivets popping) And the water will flood in.

Eventually , the Military will seek China for protection but China isn't likely to risk war ...it has to balance other stuff ....

And like the Titanic it will sink ....with a realisation it was not a world player .

It's elites are done for , it's military battered most likely literally by then.

And democracy of a true nature will be returned .

With a dare say the popular people's choice regardless of what Bangkok thinks.....

The life boats won't have many of those types in future.

    Lessons are being learnt here.

And in coming weeks we will see the beginnings of a number of blows inflicted against this insidious hijack and those responsible.

The Thai people will be rescued from this situation but the ride ahead involves big changes , and mayhem.

I left for those reasons .

I truely fear for the expat under this rule.

    Not psychically but financially -

I am hearing these people are not done with westerners by a long shot.

And when the fishing products are banned ( most certainly)

These guys will going harpooning the resident expat Whales with taxes and rip offs .....

In a way it might enlighten a few writers here to reevaluate .

Trust them at your peril ...

Your on a sinking ship and I know they ain't gonna like it.

Contrary to personal assumptions of westerners departing Thailand in this current climate , it's not indicative of failure , but more to do with being astute .

Do you really think this is going to go away ( Economic woes and Mad Cap hell bent Unelected rulers ?)

Many businesses feeling the pinch now are reassessing .

    Personally , I recouped 90% of my investments so I didn't take a dive.

I would go so far as to say liquidating assets prior to whatever regulations and taxes manifest under absolute rule is wiser more than stupid.

All the available data - growing xenophobic statements - sanctions looming - entrenched power grabs that exclude democracy - take your pick.?

As for the Thais trying to garnish some love with the Asian community a field - they are an increasing risky bet.

Communist China can be assured their recovery and afford to gamble .

For them it's politically based also.

But others will question the life expectancy of the Military ...not a day goes by that more news reflects increasing pressures.

Isolation is not just a likely situation but is actually occurring.

Dialogue that's engaging has given way to distant press releases that are coffered diplomatic terminology.

Sanctions being threatened - death camps discovered , agitation in the airline business, seafood deadlines, and tourism of Europeans , Americans , and Australians , questionable for future years.

Add trials of opponents set to commence ( no less than the recognised PM by the international community) and you have domestic instability, and condemnation from free world observers.

Thailand is going to be hit particularly hard this year.

Rumblings over press , and freedoms , and broken promises of restoring elections free and fair have seen Thailand placed in too hard basket....it's reputation in tatters .

With that back drop people can decide the course it is on for themselves .

It's telling that military leader is recruiting school children to propagate his brand of democracy.

The world saw this before and the warning signs are ominous .

  8. More theatre .

He has not the foresight to envision crushing sanctions ahead and ultimately confrontation with the west.

He won't be around for anything.

As for making work more safe?

""It's not safe to be critical of the Government " ( including work)

    Ten thousand asked for promotions?

People want promotions as he claims ,because their debts are crippling and wife's are wearing lipstick and going to bars to help out.

This country is flooded with mindless noodle eating Chinese while Rome burns....and TAt counts anything that moves as a high end "" quality Tourist "" ( or is it now just human will do?)

I liked his advise to workers to become more skilful ......coming from a guy who throws banana peels at press confrences and claims his wise leader status to all .

  9. Western Countries don't consume Thai propaganda .

It's too little too late .

The way they attempt to manipulate using communist Chinese ""people"" control on the international and domestic community is laughable .

As recent as March 25th the advisors examining the Thai case says Sanctions should follow.

Plus it's an unelected ruler the international body are dealing with.....

For this reason alone , the Military running Thailand won't be afforded any concessions .

Certainly , not billions in trade they wish for....nope it's time to pay the Piper.

The American Congress recently were told about the appalling Thai record on slave labour .

Printing articles that use Chinese Propaganda methods like this to claim its fixed isn't going to bluff the real assessments taking place.

This one will be determined almost certainly against the Thais based on available evidence .

Which is that it deserves its current tier 3 level to continue ....and recommended sanctions should go ahead.

It's most certain that will occur.

  10. This is like a rapist who forces their way into a home , and whilst transgressing and violating the female occupant ( Nation)

Declares its from the heart and he wants to protect her from what he perceives as a bad marriage ( voting choices)

It's not just outrageous but it leaves even the most stupidest of on lookers ( maybe 60,000 country wide) wondering how the Nation left open such doors to this act.?

Next he will introduce his hooded friend ( China) and insist he always is just relieving the suffering and to stay peacefully quiet while that further violation occurs.

  11. To discuss , or pretend the situation is solely a matter for Thais , or more precise , a preference decided by an audacious section of the society is silly.

This situation has evolved way past the old ways.

Politics , even democracy is gone you see that by even former Democrat leaders statements to the effect that the Charter is not a document that is in Thailand's interests.

The fact that democracy or hope of it ( bar the talking of pretence ) is gone.

Vanished to the extent even the hijackers concede it's different to democracy .

    They call it controlled democracy.

But in fact the most crucial point in all this is exactly that.

    Control.

Take away the other word ....it's futile pretending democracy goes by nature under military control.

Unless you like North Korean style voting.

So once the pretence is transcended and we are left with this current context.

Where ties on a military and security level are signed with Communist China.

It matters not one tiny bit this thread.

Mass irrelevance as if things are being decided and planned and considered.

This is just a propaganda method .

Westerners as this forum shows , even get suckered into basic tactics.

Usually weak males who find it easier to intellectually process life with submission to status Quo .

Men with guns are best submitted to.

But the international community as history shows does not permit cowboy rule.

You only need to look at recent demises after intervention.

It's most childish to think the international community will except the transcending of politics and democracy and attachment to China as business as normal.

It won't be as the up coming Fishing product bans will indicate.

One by one each sector of Thai commence will be punished.

The message will be this rule won't be acceptable.

But it will go far far further than sanctions.

United States will not sit by while the Thai populace is placed in danger of loosing its freedoms.

    Maybe permanently.

And that's what this is 100%

    Real threats to democracy.

And we know who won't be happy.

The eagle will fly , and it never ends well.

They promised democracy and elections .

Now we have a worthless Charter that is non democracy in content .

And communism flooding into the picture .

The fools here who say its not Americas business miss the point.

It is not the militarise business to decide things.

Like a bank being robbed authorities arrive and negotiate first with the people inside.

They then make plans to return the bank to its rightful owners.

    If by force or surrender.

But Thailand military hijackers will not be allowed to stand or continue.

If China dares stick it's face into this it will meet America navy presence in the South China Sea more than happy to tell it in no uncertain terms.

We , as I previously said , are well past the game of formulation...the article 44 rule, and Charter , and communist military agreements saw to that.

What we are going through now is the realisation stage that Thailand is on a path of International collision.

And sanctions will be the tear gas before much tougher action

  12. It's an insidious irony that fools claim the Thais like being held hostage .

And quote the hostage takers Polls to support their claims.

It's bordering on pathetic that their hatreds for a political party extend to do away with democracy in order to be at ease in their host country.

Perhaps when they are told to get out minus their money and property , they will reconsider their blind faith at the departure lounge .

    These things never end well.

And repeating propaganda here is useless .

The international community will destroy this rule -

What happens in the mean time is what's concerning.

The elites don't represent the Thai people or its governance in any legal sense .

Wait until the bans and sanctions kick in.

Eventually the Americans will crush this rebellious attempt at hijacking democracy .

They won't permit the Chinese union and take over.

    End of story

  13. I doubt very much the US could give a flying fig about Thailand cozying up with China.

They, Thailand and the rest of the world know, for all of America's issues, the Thai's would jump back in bed with the US in a heart beat over China, Russia or anyone else.

Thailand can flutter their eyes and try playing games as much as they want, but they are not fooling anyone and i expect the US could not give a hoot.

Rest assured, they do! Thailand is and always was a strategically important stronghold against communism. Plus it is a strategic necessity for the US marine and army. You truly think they will sit back and watch Thailand being pulled from under their feet? You must be kidding me! By getting cuddly with the Communists, our Fuhrer basically signed his own death warrant.

Again correct , America has acted historically in Asia where democracy is under threat.

And now the charter makes it very clear democracy is dead in Thailand .

And Chinese military relations sought ...it's really just a case of going through the hoops.

First stage is demonstrate how tough life can become ( sanctions)

    Pull strings internationally ......

Then it will after Thailand holds its course with China ...be about the D word...and freedoms.

By years end the much stronger language will occur .

About the same time Strong Anti western propaganda begins there.

It's amusing to see people here talk about Thailand being mistreated by friends and having every right to go off with communists.

If their neighbours wife kept showing up with a black eye would you say something to the neighbour ?

Democracy and voting is like that.

    It's a right and freedom.

Not to be taken by gun.

America is dealing not with a government of Thai people elected , but one who came to power by gun.

Once you get that rephrase the Friend part.

They ( this military ) are not friends with the American people.

Nor the Australians who ban them.

    EU or United Nations ....

They don't represent the people of Thailand .

And there is a growing perception that they are oppressive.

So it's likely the Americans are going to stop them from belting up the Thai populace with this kind of governance which is military rule by another name.

    That's what good guys do.

    They step in.

Stop the cowards from hitting on their family.

  14. Oh, oh... bad move! Does our beloved "leader" really want the US of A to bomb this country to bits in order to "liberate" its people, or what? I truly am NOT a Yank lover, but still prefer uncle Sam sitting at my porch over sharing my bed with the communists. This could end bad, real bad...

My prediction is that a certain person here in Thailand (who thinks he stands above all, is untouchable and who obviously is blinded by his sudden rise to power and influence) will forcefully be removed soon. Then, all hell will break loose. May god have mercy on our (the expats') souls sad.png

Bombing Communist parts of a country , while defending and arming the "" freedom pro democracy "" part goes back a very long way with America-

Thailand ( like some posters here) has shown great inexperience and gullibility in swallowing the Communist hook, bait to simply ensnare Thailand into its South East China Sea politics , as it rises in the region.

I heard Obama talk in 2012 about America"s intension to Halt China"s aggressive stances in this region.

The contentious issues involve several countries that are aligning with both the American position , and their own hopes of sovereign rights to ownership of areas.

By seeking military ties ( with China) the Thais have become a pivot in a chess game.

It has key strategic importance not just geographically , but more importantly politically.

Having the majority who voted a particular way in free elections to gain representation democratically , will suffice the American Argument , that their voices legitimise the rights of all Thais.

And base a future call to elections , free and fair without Charter restraints on this right.

The democracy of Thailand needs to be central to negotiations avoiding sanctions.

Of course Thailand will eventually , drop the smoke and mirrors and resign itself to China.

Knowing to hold on to power by taking away freedoms (like self governance by democratic means) in a true sense is all but exposed as a sham for what it is.

America then can begin its propaganda war.

The spotlight will begin on the people being silenced in Thailand .

Political friends once running the Nation and elected , most likely imprisoned by years end.

Dramatic shifts are in the wind.

China as we speak are building landing strips in disputed areas in the South China Sea , while American forces do Exercises near by.

George Bush used to coin a phrase "" for or against US " after 9/11 , to signify a more focused American perception of policy.

So far Obama has been tame.

Thailand however gives him the reasons to demonstrate his resolve.

He can take on China by proxy here in an issue that's more black and white.

Democracy and freedom and human rights of the oppressed Vs China and the military rulers of Thailand seeking to unlawfully ( by their definition ) to remove democracy.

The bases to then perhaps help any forces internally will be cast.

    CIA controls the issues .

Like in so many other regions and wars.

Thailand may indeed find American Bombs dropping on its military bases and weaponry .

China won't do a thing either about it.

What they forgot ( the Thais ) is how powerful and routine the Americans are.

And when the Reds so disdained by Bangkok now , suddenly have Americans Praying for their righteous cause , and funding and arming them and setting up bases and bombing airstrips in the north to fight off the Communists influenced South - then reality will set in.

Now it's not a question of civil war .

    But when.

And the stage and players are being set and introduced.

Only the very small and boyish fools can't see here the enormity of this act ahead.

It has all the central characters , politics , drama , and importance.

This really is the real deal.

    A total powder Keg .

With no point of return now.

I cashed in and got out .

I know many westerners who know This isn't like "" the other times""

Once the Chinese style Press releases and The slogans about "" returning the happiness to the people"" started many placed their assets up for sale.

My guess is there is still plenty of time 9-18 months before things really get serious.

But I wouldn't leave things to late.

Many westerners here have Stockholm Syndrome and can't see what's about to occur.

    It always happens.

But the author above is correct in the claim this military will end up getting bombed by the Americans.

  15. Yes it's funny talking to people laughing spontaneously and seemingly happy, about the subject of money, and how their lives seem in a simple way more fulfilling without it.

Nepal is suffering a large Quake which many Thais seemed oblivious to the fact that it was the country Lord Buddha was born.

Thais , many it seems thought Buddha was a Thai .

Anyhow , the old saying "" ignorance is bliss"" sometimes takes on new meanings.

Australia who ranks tenth way above Thailand ....does not seem to be as relaxed or happy.

Back in Sydney I saw less laughter than my far away community .

Somehow I think the poll might not reflect. The truth
