  1. I am looking for a responsible driving instructor/school for my daughter. I live in Bangna. As much as anything, I want her to learn the rules of the road (she will be one of the few in Thailand if she achieves it!). I am talking about right of way, courtesy to other drivers etc, which I think is a new concept to Thailand! Anyone got experience of good instructors?

  2. I am about to apply for my yellow tabien baan book and have obtained a certified copy of my passport from the British Embassy as required by my local Municipal Office, who also said said I have to go to MFA at Chaeng Wattana to get it translated from the only acceptable translation office. This is a long journey for me, then I just became aware of this relatively new MFA office in Khlong Toei in the MRT station. Can anyone confirm if they can do this particular task of translating my passport certified copy at this office? Thanks all in advance.

  3. Thanks Bobcat, that is excellent precise info. I am sure I would not score zero but then again i would be surprised if I got more than 50% on the video and questions. I am fairly confident of getting through the interview so overall my chances might be OK.

How long did you talk on the video and what was their expectation?

Also, do you remember any of the multiple choice questions? I know they will change but I am trying to gauge what level of Thai I actually am.

bembaman, good luck with your application for Thai Residency :D If you are succsessful you will NOT become a Thai person of ANY level. You will remain till your dying day, a Farang living in Thailand :D You may save some money on extension applications, you may be able to work here without going through all WP shit, you maybe even be able to put your name in the blue book? I really do not know. If you stay here long enough, you may even earn some respect from the Thai people you associate with. If you are serious about residency, why ask for the answers from the test, have a go at it by yourself. At least that way, if you pass, YOU can be proud. :o

You really are a bit of a prick aren't you.

Firstly, I did not ask for the answers and I already knew there were 10 different sets of questions - I wanted to gauge the difficulty or otherwise of the questions. It is called doing your research. I will not need to save any money on renewal visas and WP's as I already get 2 year visas & WP's as MD of a BOI company and the company pays for all that anyway. I have 3 or 4 acquaintances who have successfully applied for citizenship and I see this as just one step along that line, whether i get it or not of course is unknown and I need a few more years yet probably anyway.

As for the respect of the Thai people, speak for yourself. I am having dinner with an ex-prime minister of Thailand in 2 weeks time with my family and his (his invitation and not my request) so the fact that the bar slags and noodle vendors you probably intermingle with do not respect you, does not necessarily apply to others.

If you have nothing positive to say then why not just go and join some of sex tourist & idle broke losers forums and you can banter all you want. The fact you live in Buriram says it all.

  5. I intend applying for residency and will score highly in all categories except one - the language. I am told by someone who did it last year that there is a multiple choice test with 10 questions then you sit in front of a video camera for 5 minutes and talk about yourself, famil, job etc.

I heard somewhere that there is a points system in use which makes sense as most nations do it that way. My question is, does anyone know the points structure so I can work out how important the language is? If I totally screw up the language bit, not assured but a possibility, what impact would it have assuming high scores elsewhere?

  6. has anyone got any RECENT experience og getting a Thai driving licence? If anyone got it throught the one on Sukhumvit by 62/1 then that would be even more interesting. I hear so many differing stories, some sat an actual driving test, others did not, some did a written test etc. I know what it says on this site but I have spoke to people who have had completely different experiences.

    What did you take?

What happened and what were you required to do?

    Thanks.

  7. Is it possible to buy a house in the name of my daughter (under 18 years, still very young) rather than the wife? My wife has a sister who owns a house which was security on a loan on which she has defaulted. The creditors want the house but the sister claims they cannot get it because it is in her 14 year old daughter's name.

Secondly, is it posible to buy it in my wife's name but with a 30 year renewable lease issued to me at a nominal rent? I am told these 30 year leases are getting popular. Anyone experienced this?

  8. Are there any farangs on the forum trading in a partnership type scenario rather than a limited company? As I understand it a farang can participaste in a partnership. I am starting a business with my wife which is services based with little or no esposure to debt in an industry that traditionally trades as partnerships rather than as a company. I will be the 'driver' of the business although i will not be 'visible' in the business in the first year or two. I am curious about other people's experiences and recommendations, work permit or taxation issues. Another option would be to trade as a sole proprietor in my wife's name although that puts me at risk if I am identified as working in the business. I do have a work permit although not for this proposed business.

  9. There are no end of references to the residing in Thailand 10 years, age of 40+ etc requirements as per the 1962 law. However, this law carries a possibility of exception to this where marriage to a Thai, having Thai born children or a period of study in Thailand can be shown. In this case one must show good character, knowledge of Thai language and I think gainful employment. It is suggested on this site's main page that in these circumstances 5 years residence is enough, but 5 years does not appear in the statute as far as I know. Does anyone know the truth and practical realities of citizenship application? There is so much bullshit and folklore spoke on subjects such as this that it is difficult discerning the truth. Anyone ACTUALLY DONE IT?
