What was the golden era for Thai leaders. Is none. There must be somewhere in the US that is appealing and if not then you are likely to want somewhere like ..Thailand.
Yes, I've spent a total of 40 years outside the US in Europe (as a kid), East Asia, the Middle East and West Africa. I always liked visiting Thailand, esp. Chiang Mai, and I had at different times two professional women as gfs (mid-level government officer and a registered nurse for a plastic surgeon, and no, I didn't need surgery). But the U.S. is large enough to find a good quality of life away from the 40% that are complete idiots. Life is good here because I know where to live. Only problem is spiking apartment rents, so I'm headed elsewhere that I know is a great place and much cheaper. Ciao!

What are people paying to get vaccinated in Thailand? (I visited the country about 50 times until 2018 but haven't lived there). A friend in the Philippines says it's about $150 there. And they only have Astrazeneca and Sinovac.

I wouldn't trust any local in this country apart from the wife and daughter. There's no accountability, it's like the wild west. Before any of the "if you don't like it you can always leave" idiots pipe up, I do like it here, but I do retain the right to criticise when I feel the need.
"Cowboy" and the "wild west" are always used by Commonwealth people to refer to anything inefficient. Wild West or not, Wyatt Earp in Tombstone in 1881 loved ice cream--and how, you may ask, could anyone get ice cream in the southern Arizona desert before the introduction of electricity? Trains packed with ice were able to make it all the way down from Alaska and northern Maine. And Paris/NY fashions were only a year behind. People could order anything by train using the Sears catalogue.

The OP reminds me of China when it was truly communist. Any given hotel, especially outside the major cities, might be empty, but if you asked for a room you'd be told they were full up. "No room!" That's because everyone was paid a basic wage and nobody could be fired--so why should anyone do any work? At least in the service sector. It was still bad in 1992 when I was at a major airport. I went to a drink counter and asked for a can of cola and the two girls simply glared at me for a moment and continued chatting. At least in Thailand the young women in the service sector in BKK and Chiang Mai work hard and efficiently.

That's being very, very generous.
A coin-toss would be more accurate and reliable than this regime.
I mean I thought that the trains would run on time with this sort of "government"?
Efficient, no corruption, military-like precision and leadership. Oops.
Another example of the failure of nepotism.
The Myanmar army is made up of village idiots. That's why they don't mind shooting their own citizens by the hundreds. How much better is Thailand's?

They go by the book. I have never experienced "out of their way" service. That applies to all embassies and consulates.
Then the book was pretty helpful in my case in Abu Dhabi. And satisfactory in many other countries.

Well, its free for US citizens residing in the US. Or are you against that as well?
Of course he/she is, unless they think the virus is a hoax and the vaccine is deadly.

I did get prompt, polite and consistently intelligent service and assistance from the employees. Same experience with the consulate.Just maybe, they don't have the time or training to turn themselves into a health clinic.
Same here. They went out of their way for me at the Abu Dhabi embassy.

Actually her English was very good in both speaking and writing.
I don't doubt that, but "very good" is not a numerical score, and high IELTS scores are difficult to say the least and hospitals are demanding. I knew a Chinese girl in Dubai whose English was quite good. She had to return to China, where she immersed herself in English lessons and finally passed IELTS 8 or 9 and got a job at a Bay Area hospital. She very soon became a supervisory nurse and bought a house in San Jose (back around 2000). She must be in good financial shape now. A Chinese woman like her knows how to handle money.

Sounds like me. I once had a GF that worked at the Ministry of Education. She had a master's degree from Chula. She later married a farang and now lives in Tennessee, USA. We are still friends on FB. Another GF was also a nurse at a very well known hospital. She was a supervisor there. Came to the USA but had difficulty in getting certified. Ended up marrying a farang guy and now lives in Phuket.
I imagine certification may have been a function of her English; US certification requires (last I knew) a very high IELTS score, 8 or maybe even 9 (out of 9)

I find it sad (and very telling about the current world we live in) that a woman may only find value in the opposite gender for financial support. Have they all given up the prospects of having a family and a life companion? I see this not only in Thailand, but also in Korea and Japan where the women seem to be getting professional jobs and staying alone instead of getting married. Very concerning for these governments as the population continues to age and becomes top-heavy.
That's just it: "instead of" getting married. In those two cultures as well as the Chinese, women generally can't get married and then expect to have a career. Loads of modern Japanese women--Chinese too--are content to have a boyfriend or two while working.

Seems to be the norm. But my first Thai gf was a mid-level officer in the Ministry of Education. My second one was a nurse--a full RN.

Well, backpackers give Westerners a bad name, to the detriment of sensible ones. But he seems to have been oblivious to their Chinese bus-tour counterparts. The latter, with their pushy, uncouth habits, have taken over Europe to the extent that discerning North American tourists no longer wish to visit Europe.

They should put limitations on who can buy what and where and not leave it wide open to be desecrated by o ne race. None of the Chinese I know want to live in Thailand. It's no longer an upgrade.

Oh, a foreigner could buy property in his/her own name? I always thought that if foreigners leave the country for good, they take the house and the land with them!

Stupid question I know, but unless you are working here, why did you pick Thailand if you don't want hot weather?
Covid shouldn't be an excuse anymore for keeping you here and even if you are married, you can still move to colder clims; very little restrictions here even given the messed up global travel
Well--I think many westerners who haven't spent much time in the "tropics" think of the weather and the beaches as something akin to paradise. Soon they discover that after a ten-minute walk, they need a shower. I hate feeling sticky all the time too. But I wouldn't mind living in Chiang Mai if I really needed to leave my four-seasonal country.

I would pay to get the vaccine of my choice. I believe the Johnson & Johnson vaccine is only one shot? But I’d probably go for Pfizer as it’s been around longer and appears to be very effective with few if any side effects.
I wouldn’t want the Chinese or Russian vaccines, I just trust western medicines more ... both appear to be safe and work well.
Moderna offers the same efficacy. Got my first one already; #2 coming up Mar 18th in Idaho.

I stayed in an Italian pensione so cheap, the manager stole my towel. And the sink was leaking. I called down and said, "Hey, I've got a leak in the sink." "Go right ahead," she replied, "The customer's always right!"

Until last year or the year before I had the so called Wi-Net from TOT. That was 16 mbps, which was "fast" for me at that time. One day I got a visit from TOT and they asked us if we were interested in internet via fiber optics. It was 100 Baht per month cheaper and here speeds up to 300 mbps up and download! I have it now and it works great. No cap like in the US or Australia. Also I have mobile internet which is pretty fast too.
There's no cap in the U.S. if you're using regular wifi with a laptop. I don't use a data plan on my phone--somewhat redundant for my needs, as the phone also has wifi.

Sorry you are wrong. Tax rebates, tax breaks, indirect funding, lucrative government contracts.
And the 737 Max was a sloppy software interface that was there to overcome inherent STRUCTURAL instability. Maybe you should read up on it. But from your post, if it was just software then it would be ok?
Plenty of documentaries on this, and Boeing's covering up of numerous reported safety issues. Not only 737 Max, but 787 too. Nothing to be proud of, but then carry on......USA! USA! USA!Well then let's see if the Europeans certify the aircraft.

Have you ever been on one? I'm guessing not. Also guessing you are a proud Boeing flag waver judging by your snipes.
Yep, much better to have your US tax payer money going to Boeing - the 737 Max was a fantastic achievement that you can be proud of.Federal tax money doesn't go to Boeing. EU tax money has always subsidized Airbus. Feeling nostalgic about that inherently money-losing white elephant, the Concorde. Then you thought, let's build yet another white elephant strictly for prestige. Anyway, the 737Max was not a structural problem, it was sloppy software interface.
Are you proud of the Olympic contenders of "your" country?

I'm not a sports-oriented person but I do watch the summer Olympics simply because the athletes generally represent the elite, world-class level. I don't care whether they're pros or not; why should I. I just enjoy seeing the (mostly) very best compete. My nationality is less important.
