The challenge with these kinds of news reports is they give us the statistics... but not really the reasons.

Are the cases down now because we're a full month after the holiday period ended?

Are the cases down now because of the vaccine administrations beginning to have an impact?

Are the cases down because states and localities earlier were forced to escalate their protective measures amid the prior surge?

probably all of the above, plus other reasons you or I haven’t thought of. We’ll have to wait for epidemiologists to study the situation and report back. one week’s numbers don’t tell us much, and you’re right that it’s too early to relax measures, and certainly too early to celebrate. It certainly can’t be anything the Biden administration has done. The effects of any of that will only be known some weeks down the line.

Quite happy now to be able to pop up the news and not see many reports about the stupid and hateful things Trump did!!!  What a breath of fresh air. Love it.  Boring is good.

yeah, but now I have to trudge over to Entertainment Weekly to find out what the Kardashians are up to, instead of reading about it in the all the front pages because The President tweeted about it. What a chore.

Is this like walking into the dentist and asking him to pick a number and saying yes, that's the one I'll have pulled. I usually go in hoping to get what I wanted..

that assumes you always know what you want, which isn’t always the case. We don’t know what we don’t know, and a little non exactness, a little fuzziness in search results can lead to a better understanding. Also, when a search engine doesn’t know you as intimately as google, some biases can be avoided by seeing results you wouldn’t otherwise see.

I suppose I could use google to search - but the results may be tainted ????

can you offer some of the other search engines you use?

Alohafind - built into the Aloha browser, but can be used separately in other browsers

Ecoasia - browser cum search engine

Duckduckgo - they also have their own browser. Duck has a command that allows you to search using google, but without giving google any of your data.

iCab - an excellent, endlessly customizable, feature-rich browser which has a list of third party search engines you can set as defaults

Startpage.com - I believe (from memory when they initially launched) that this is a european initiative and endorsed by some EU agency

    Bing - microsoft

Wolframalpha - narrow usefulness, but very good for fact based questions, or mathematical queries.

The desire to find some wacky alternative religion to succumb to seems to be an abiding passion in the USA so I can well believe that a lot of people there have mental health issues on account of their gullibility.

Not just in the US. In my teens, I was briefly (well, not that briefly—over eight months) enticed into Jehova’s Witnesses. There were people from all walks of life and all income levels. The member whose home we met at was a multi millionaire. My best friend at the time (and today still my best friend) often tried to pull me out. I once mentioned to the minister under whom I studied the bible about this and his response was for me to ditch my friend. At that moment, something snapped into place in my head. My friend never threatened to abandon me if I didn’t ditch the church. But this guy, this minister of peace, his first suggestion was for me to ditch my friend. I walked out of there and never looked back.

Hopefully for some—dare I hope, many?—of these Q guys a sharp jab of awakening can lift the fog long enough for some sanity, some clear thinking, to prevail. Among some I know, it has happened over the last week. There is hope.

Does trump have an iota of respect for his MAGA supporters? Here’s a clue: he just preemptively pardoned a man who was charged with ripping off his supporters. He disdains his MAGAS, but is happy to ride their waves of stupidity to enrich himself and cronies.

Trump campaign manager indicted by Trump justice dept for ripping off Trump supporters to build a fake Trump wall gets pardoned by Trump to the delight of Trump supporters.
