Did my 1 year extension (marriage) today, appointment made via Line for 1pm, got there on time. We were the only customers, all documents as per the latest check list; everything done, signed, and the under consideration stamp given in record time - 50 minutes start to finish.

    Thank you Hat Yai immigration.

Missed you by a few hours.. i went this morning, doing my 90-days report (they finally use a barcode now) and a re-entry. Took about 20 minutes and i left very satisfied.

The IO was happy to accept it but Bangkok wasn't, the IO phoned me yesterday afternoon and asked me to get the passbook updated and bring it to the office. Did that this morning, got another bank statement just in case. He was happy, hopefully Bangkok are too.

I hope, you will be luckier this year. Last year went very well for me, 30min. for extension and 90-days-report, this year they also accepted everything, but it took them about 90 minutes from the time of the appointment (I didn't ask why..). I always insist on a manual update for the bank letter with the actual date and check for stamp and signature. They made me run extra rounds too many times because of such little details. Good luck for your next extension.

We've done 3m THB in cash, 1m THB in cash in previous years.

Both times the seller insisted on cash (first time the woman didn't walk and didn't have accounts - had to be carried into the LO and the cash was counted in her car with the LO officer in presence).

Second time Thai guy had debts, wanted cash, was counted in the LO in front of the LO officer.

Not my experience. Over the years we had transactions in several provinces and nowhere had the officers of the "grom tee din" any interest in the amount of money beeing exchanged between seller and buyer. Their only interest had been on the amount of taxes they had calculated. Not speaking about hidden envelopes, that's another story..

Can I use a 'Certificate Of Residence' from Pattaya Immigration where I live to open a bank account in Bangkok, or do I need the certificate from Bangkok Immigration?

If I need the Certificate from Bangkok Immigration, will they issue it if my LEASE/TM47/TM30, etc. is in Pattaya?

You can't get a Cerfificate of Residence in Bangkok when you are living and extending your visa in Pattaya, but you can use the one form Pattaya IO to open a bank account in Bangkok.

I notice the tents have now gone from outside the Hat Yai Immigration Office; so no more sitting outside sweating for a hour.

Yes, everything back to normal. Made my extension last week; much nicer to wait inside. Interesting was, that all visitors had masks on, but not the Immigration Officers..

Wrong, you cannot show ID when required in the bank, if your passport is not the same as registered, if not changed within the last few years; I talk from experience. Try it yourself and post a feedback...????

Have you tried it? 10 years ago, i changed a passport and went to the bank. There they had some problems, because 20 years ago, i forgot to inform them about the change. They still had the passport number from 30 years ago - i never had a problem with any bank transactions or the bank information for the immigration..

Remember to change your passport number everywhere it's used for identification, especially bank accounts, remember all bankbooks and both passports - Bangkok Bank might also need to change your bankbooks, as they are paired with your old passport number - furthermore your Driver's License might have your passport number, if you don't have a Thai ID-number, so it's advisable to get that changed also (costs about 200 baht). Furthermore loyalty cards might be linked to passport number - for exeampel Central's "The 1"-card, so if you need to get loyalty discount some shops might ask for your ID, i.e. your passport, and if that don't fit the card, no discount; so best do it all in one go...????

No need to change bankbooks. None of the big banks have linked the account number to the passport number. The driving licenses can be changed with the next renewal (the number of the old passport is in the transfer stamps of the new one.

The food wasn't rejected simply because your smuggling the items in was successful, that's the only reason.   Next time, try declaring them and see what the reaction is.

I'd rather say, that most customs officers will tolerate reasonable amounts of meat/cheese and other food for personal use. Last time I reentered TH I had to open my bag in Hat Yai, because the officer thought, the salt sticks could be some sort of explosives. She had seen all my meat and cheese products and didn't say a word, but was relieved (and even smiled), that no explosives were found..

Regardless of these sensational stories in the media about the dangers of cannabis, I do believe the Thai govt missed a terrific opportunity to regulate and tax the growers and vendors. Look at how it works in the USA, where you can only purchase weed legally from a registered marijuana vendor, and can only purchase products grown under license. Often the products come with a QR code link to an independent assay of that particular batch. This provides greater assurance of the quality of the product in terms of THC levels as well as knowledge of the strain and whether any pesticides or chemicals were used in the growing process. Finally, the state adds ~20% tax on all cannabis sales, providing pretty decent revenue. Of course regulations vary from state to state, so that example is just a generalization.

But what we have in Thailand is unknown vendors offering mystery product (strain unknown, THC levels uncertain, potentially grown with pesticides), sold on the street without any tax revenue whatsoever.

I'm the biggest stoner I know, but now that it's legal I'm still not gonna buy from some rando dealer. I'd much rather pay 20% tax if it means I can be assured the product I'm ingesting is safe.

Paying tax would be a good idea, especially as this government is in terrible need of money. But, as it is Thailand, i rather doubt, that this would give any quality assurance or use of pesticides or other chemicals.

For alot of us, cannabis is infinitely less obnoxious smelling, and much less filthy than the smell of tobacco, which is horrendous. I have no issues with putting restrictions on tobacco. For as long as I can remember, cigarette smokers have been abusing my rights to consume decent quality oxygen.

Mike, you're wrong. I've been smoking both for a long time. I stopped cannabis, when i moved to Thailand - legal reasons. Whilst a decent outdoor ganja or hash from Kerala, Kashmir, Afghanistan, Morocco, Lebanon  and so on have a quiet decent smell,  the new generation high power indoor plants with 20 - 30% THC-content smell very, very strong - at least for the non smokers (ask my wife, she will tell you some horrible stories..).

Immigration called this afternoon to see if they could call round. Better than the first time when they arrived unannounced. Just one officer in civvies, who was very polite and spoke English, a few photos (not in the bedroom this time), sign the visit document, with witness signatures from a couple of neighbours and job done. They didn't visit last year, is there any protocol as to when you warrant a home visit?

I don't think that they have any protocol. 4 years ago they came visit us and 3 years ago they  told me, that they will have to come every year from then on. Never came again. And we don't have any neighbours..

I did my extension (retirement) this week too. I had prepared everything according to the relevant checklist. All finished without problems in about an hour.

I only hope that next year COVID-19 will be just a memory and we will be allowed to wait inside the building.

So did you get the 12-months statement from the headquarters of your bank or did you print it from your app?

The problem is inconsistency, the marriage extension checklist says "A photocopy of the passport — Every used page from the first one to the last one is required". First time they took all, last couple of times they've returned the non-relevant page copies. I'm tempted to just give them the relevant pages next time. However, all it takes is a change of command and suddenly it's strictly as per the checklist and it's off to the photocopier.

The retirement checklist (attached) just says "A photocopy of the current passport" so it's ambiguous ~ confuamazing Thailand.

I only give them the relevant pages, but, just in case, i also carry the other ones with me. The problem of inconsistency is not only the change of command, for the last three years the officers changed every time. Last year the officer said, i don't need a 12-months statement, as my bankbook obviously shows every transaction (common sense), but this year a new officer wanted the 12-months statement - the bankbook was the same. On the other hand, they gave me the full 12 months and missed the fact, that my passport will expire earlier.. I will see what happens, when i change the passport. Maybe they'll change the date of the extension, but, i rather hope, they won't admit any mistake and let it be..

I used the Krungsri branch near corner of Phetkasem and Sam Sip Met. Empty and very helpful, had letter and statements all done in 30 minutes.

Immigration is still out in the carpark under a tent, paperwork in at 1pm, 2pm they came looking for the money and to take a photo of the wife & I. At 2:20 it was sign the documents (done in the car park this year), all finished by 2:30.

All smiles, no missing documents, no questions, all very straightforward; thank you Songkhla Immigration.

This is the latest checklist which is now available in Thai and English.

Hi Stocky. I use a BBL branch near the clock tower. Bank letter and statement (up to 6 months) was always done in 20 - 30 minutes, but doesn't work with 12-months statement.. I never made copies of every passport page, only the relevant ones and always use a google-map with hand remarks; has never been a problem. The 12-months statement for retirement extensions is relatively new, a bit difficult for the timing, but then, on the other hand, i don't like to go back to marriage extensions, as lots of other stuff is needed, incl. the consideration time. Thank for your information anyway.

I'd not considered doing it in two parts, something to consider. I normally use the Krungsri branch in Central Festival, because it's seldom busy, though it still takes two hours for letter and two months bank statements; longer if the manager isn't around to sign. The problem with the Central Festival branch is it doesn't open until 11am. So looks like I need to go to the main branch in town which is always busy, and the staff are more ovine.

Do you mean two months or 12 months bank statement? I can get up to 6 months at BBL immediately, but 12 months takes a week. If Krungsri can do a 12 months on the spot, please inform me.

  16. 19 hours ago, Stocky said:

But doesn't it require to carry a stamp from the bank, I didn't think print your own was acceptable?!

The statement i got from BBL headquarters didn't have a stamp. There was even a remark, that no stamp is needed, as it comes directly from their headquarters. IO was ok with that. Could be different from a downloaded PDF file.

Just about to start the application for a my marriage extension, the new check list contains one significant change from before:

    Section 3.1.1 has changed from:

"A confirmation letter from the bank in Thailand (not over more than 7 days), the money must remain in the bank within the previous two months must not be less than 400,000 baht"

    to

"Confirmation letter from the bank in Thailand (*Documents from the bank must be on the same day as the submission date*). The balance in the account over the past 2 months is not less than 400,000 baht."

Which just adds an extra rush to proceedings, but I guess it brings us in line with other immigration offices.

    .

The confirmation letter is not such a problem, since it can be done in a few minutes, but since last year they also ask for a 12 months statement (extension based on retirement), which takes about a week to be sent from headquarters. I use an account only for visa purposes, so obviously no hidden transfers, but still had to get it. Besides; a new officer again..

I did that last year… my PP only had eleven months left at extension date.

Now my extension date is far enough away from Songram to make my life easier…

I wouldn't plan on that. I just got my new extension and they were so busy with the financial details, that they missed the expiry date of my passport. They gave me 12 months instead of 9, i didn't insist.. 10 years ago, in an other province, they didn't miss the expiry date but gave me 12 months anyway, just reminding me not to forget to renew the passport.
