  1. What i realized is that for me knowing tone rules is useful for some words like mai, kaai, maa(all with their similar spelling and different meaning). But for all other words i will just remember how to pronounce it properly. For example:

If i see words like ม้า หมา ,tone rules would be useful because words like that are very similar and i would have difficult time recognizing what words means

but for any other words like ประเทศ บ้าน tone rules are not useful to me because i can just remember how to pronounce it and it wouldn't be difficult to memorize because there are no similar words like it.

If i see word บ้าน i will know how to pronounce it,because there are no similar words like it,but on other hand word like หมา one could have trouble identifying meaning because it could be easily mistaken by ม้า.

tl:dr tone rules(for me) -very useful for similar words like ม้า หมา ไข้ ไข่ ไม้ ใหม่ ,so you can identify it quickly

    - any others words- just remember how to pronounce it

The tone rule is only useful when you are trying to write down a spoken word.

For instance the word, มา can produce 5 different sounds like the middle consonant but in order to produce the corresponding tone, you need to write like this มา, หม่า, ม่า, ม้า, หมา

So we group those consonants which have similar pattern as ม and call them low consonant. And all those words can only be written in this regard that is มา, ม่า, ม้า นา, น่า, น้า.

The tone rule is taught in school, so that you can remember how to write what is spoken correctly. They are not meant to be used in the reversed order. In other words, it's not used to to help you pronounce the word correctly. In order to do that, you just have to remember them all by heart. You can try, but it's going to be really confusing and hard, unless you remember what them all sound like in the first place (which isn't that hard to remember).

  2. Antibiotics have no effect on a flu or cold, no matter how bad your flu.

But it is generally used as a prophylaxis for bacterial superimposed infection.

Care to elaborate "generally" one should cautious giving blanket statements in a non health forum.

    care to prove me wrong?

  3. To the OP:

    Hi there,

Just a thought, but if it bothers you so much, why don't you ask these persons why they call you a farang and how you feel about it. If I was able to speak Thai I would definitely do this, in stead of complying about it on TV smile.png

    All the best smile.png

It's not the word 'farang' that bothered me here, although it does often bother me. It was teh assumption that 'farang' are too stupid to learn Thai. But good point, I could have said to the BBQ guy, " please explain why you think that me lighting a BBQ is funny?". Maybe there was a rational explanation midst my paranoia.

Something for expats who have been here a while - does living in Thailand affect your personality? I'm sure that if you are dealing with challenges like daily it could affect your self-esteem etc. And, will it affect my kids when their father's race is the butt of jokes?

General Thai do not have an assumption that any farangs are too stupid to learn Thai. They knows for a fact that Thai language is too foreign for a usual farang to learn to speak adequately at their level.

In the eye of pessimist, a laugh is an insult instead of a friendly expression. Perhaps that person is trying to laugh with you and not at you.

Butt of jokes? You have to kidding me. If you really think so, can you prove it that you are a joke to an entire village?

  4. You don't know every Thai doctors. At least you don't know me.

I usually ask my patients if they want my medicine or they wanna go to buy themselves at drug store. And even so, some get offended when I do that because they think that I think they don't have money.

I try to make everyone happy but in the end, you can't do the same thing and expect everyone to be happy and don't complain. It's just impossible.

If you are RN, you should know that.

  5. Hi, guys. Thanks to all. Still in the dark on the basic issues.

txp158, - you are too technical for me. Cannot understand:

    - why all politics here must go back to Thaksin;

You want unbiased review, so I give facts. None my personal opinion is involved.

    - Yingluck is a sister of Thaksin Shinawatra in blood (not in law).

    - Yingluck became an executive in the busineses founded by her elder brother, Thaksin shinawatra, and later became the president of property developer SC Asset and managing director of Advanced info service (aka AIS a companany owned by shin corporation).

    - On 16 May 2011, the Pheu Thai party voted to name Yingluck as the party's top candidate under the party list system. Yingluck has no prior experience in any politics before the general election on july 3rd, 2011 meaning that it only took her 48 days to promote herself for general election and in spite of that she won the title of prime minister.

    - Thaksin contacts red shirts on many occasions via skype phone calls condemning the democrat government and openly support People's power party and pheu thai party. => youtube.com/watch?v=a9ByTwwPoT8 youtube.com/watch?v=-gtLxAznH10 youtube.com/watch?v=iBsIGCA2u0M

    - Many members of parliament of people power's and pheu thai party frequently flied to Dubai to personally meet you know who. One of many news report can be found here => nationmultimedia.com/national/Northeast-MPs-to-fly-to-Dubai-demanding-Cabinet-se-30159711.html

I do not know why all politics must go back to Thaksin. But this is what I see. No bias, just facts.

If you don't understand what I wrote before, I suggest you take a good look at what have become of red shirt supporter and yellow shirt supporter. You'll see the differences are pretty clear.

  6. In contrast to red shirt, here's the truth about yellow shirt.

The People's Alliance for Democracy (PAD) (Thai: พันธมิตรประชาชนเพื่อประชาธิปไตย) AKA the Yellow Shirts was originally a coalition of protesters against Thaksin Shinawatra, the former Prime Minister of Thailand who is also the head of Thai ruk thai party.

The PAD was formally established on February 8, 2006, after Thaksin's family sold shares in Shin Corp to Temasek Holdings (2 days after foreign business act was amended so that shares in the segment of telecommunication could be owned by any foreigners up to 49%). Ship Corp made most of its monopoly business from governmental leased satellite orbit, (which is the only satellite orbit that Thailand possesses). The PAD saw the transactions as a proof of a conflict of interest.

The central committee of the PAD consisted of Sondhi Limthongkul, Chamlong Srimuang, Phiphob Thongchai, Somsak Kosaisuuk, and Somkiat Pongpaiboon.

1 Media mogul Sondhi Limthongkul is a journalist and founder of Manager daily newspaper as well as satellite broadcaster ASTV. On 1 October 2013, Sondhi was declared guilty of lese majeste for quoting remarks made by an opponent protesting the 2008 resumption of PAD protests. As of today, despite the alleged crime of lese majeste, he remains a royalist and takes no part in any political party.

2 Major General Chamlong Srimuang is a former governor of Bangkok, leader of the Palang Dharma Party, spokesman of the Confederation for Democracy (1992 oppositional movement). As of today, he takes no part in any political party.

3 Activist Phiphob Thongchai is a well known non-governmental organization leader who advocates for a wide range of issues for the past 30 years. He has been active since he was a college student, at the time of which he held the position of the Secretary of the University Student Federation of Thailand. He is also an ex-member of the Council of Socio-economic Consultants of Thailand, and Committee for Democratic Advocacy of Thailand, and the Children's Foundation of Thailand. As of today, he takes no part in any political party.

4 Somsak Kosaisuuk used to be a Secretary-General of the State Enterprise Labour Relations Confederation (SELRC), a union of government owned enterprises' employees, and in this position he was very active in organizing a campaign against the privatization of the electricity generating authority of Thailand. Currently, he is an adviser to the union. When the PAD registered a political party, aka new politics party (NPP), Somsak became its chairman. In late April 2011, he resigned from the PAD leadership in a split that separated the PAD from the NPP.

5 Somkiat Pongpaiboon was a university lecturer at Nakhon Ratchasima Rajabhat University. He became an MP for democrat party in 2007 and a leader of the PAD after the coup de tat in 2006. As of today, he takes no part in any political party.

  7. And this is why I will continue to bring my sons to the children's hospital in Bangkok I just can not trust any of the doctors in the private hospitals for them.

For myself there is one foreign doctor who is very reliable in Bangkok and if I have any issues I will always go to him

I agree. My son is currently in the Queen Sirikit Institute for Children's Health hospital. I'm really impressed by the doctors and medical staff there. The children's hospital he goes for his wheelchair, walkers, and special boots is also really good.

On recommendation, we tried a local private hospital. Expensive, but nice facilities, like a hotel. The senior doctor misdiagnosed him and wanted to operate. Luckily he bottled out of the op and suggested we move him to QSICH. The doctors there were not impressed with the diagnosis nor the lack of adherence to transfer procedure.

One question - I thought only Thai doctors could practice medicine in Thailand?

All doctors in Thailand are required to have a license provided by the medical council of Thailand in order to practice medicine. That license would be given to anyone who passes the licensing examination. The last (oral) part of the exam is given in Thai, so most foreign doctors will have difficulty passing the exam if they speak no Thai at all.

  8. I took my wife to a thai doctor for a general checkup.

    That included a blood test.

As a result of that blood test, we were advised that my wife has a shortage of calcium, osteoporosis.

The doctor sold us medicine to cure the problem.

Later we went to my doctor in Belgium, and asked for a prescription of a similar medicin, and told him why.

The belgian doctor then informed us that osteoroposis CAN NOT BE ESTABLISHED through a blood test.

Never again will I trust a medecin selling doctor.

About 54% of postmenopausal white women in the United States have osteopenia and 30% have osteoporosis. If your wife is in that age range, he doesn't need a blood test and he'll be half right.

In order to establish the diagnosis of osteoporosis or osteopenia, one would need to undergo bone desitometry aka DEXA. If the general check up includes that test, then your wife is likely to have osteoporosis.

If you are certain that your wife have low blood calcium, then doctor will need to order a whole lot more tests in order to establish the cause of hypocalcemia. Most foreigners will be ask if they want to find the cause at home or in Thailand.

If there is a lot of language barrier, most doctor will say low calcium. Take calcium pill now and do more tests at home.

  9. The truth is if it's antibiotic, they generally give you enough supply to last 5-10 days. If antibiotic is related to infective diarrhea, then usually no longer than 3 days. If the medication is related to hypertension or diabetes, then they give you at least 30 days or until your next follow up which could be 60, 90 or more.

Selling medicine in a clinic has been they way doctor and patients interact in Thailand for the last 200 years. Traditionally in the east, doctors are expected to diagnose and provide treatment in the same location. This tradition has evolved in the way that results in what you experience now in a clinic. There is no doctor fee but you are opt to pay the price of all given medicines. And patients generally agree to buy all medicines doctors are giving to them because they hope the diagnosis is correct and medication would work. If it doesn't work, doctors lose business as they would go somewhere else. It's simply economic 101 at work.

If you think otherwise, I suggest you come and stay on any Thai OPD for a week or two. Most patients consistently ask for more medications. That also goes for any OPD in any private hospital or clinic.

  10. ...but imagine they would be pretty upset if I went in saying "the Asian can speak English etc" and laugh about it.

Sing me a song in your native language ...

You made your point. Native english speakers do say that to Asian all the time.

  11. Thailand is actually more like a city in California rather than a country in terms of GDP Thailand is 360 US billions and California 1.8 trillion or something like that. I was not suggesting colonization. You need some outside help. Arnold Alois Schwarzenegger is not a native American. The last time I flew into Canada all of the airport security were Sikhs. I would contract the government out to Singapore to manage not colonize. A Frenchman for minister of restaurants. Disneyland to manage Pattaya. Bloomberg is available now maybe he could be Mayor of Bangkok. A Swiss guy could be the minister of education.

Get a bit less parochial. Thais have not really demonstrated excellence in many areas. Keep the Brits and Americans out of the banking sector and you'd do OK.

You are hoping like many Thais that we need someone with enough knowledge, experience with good morality to operate this country. The man that you think is in Singapore is the same man, Adam Smith talks about in his books. That man is called the man of system. I have too limited knowledge to argue with you regarding the pro and con of central planning. I suggest you listen to what the man in video I'm about to show you, has to say and then maybe try to reflex your thought on video about what should really be done.

You said, I said, "You are hoping like many Thais that we need someone with enough knowledge, experience with good morality to operate this country."

I didn't say that at all. You are making a mountain out of a molehill. Thailand is a little country with a small number of people and a GNP less than many States and cities in the USA. It is not rocket science. It is not a hard job. Even Arnold Alois Schwarzenegger did it and he had twice the money problems to deal with. NYC has a GDP 4 times that of Thailand and Bloomberg did just fine and is unemployed right now.

You seem to think the successful management of Thailand is a difficult job. There are 100 people in the USA today that manage larger amounts of money and property and people.

You write a job description and give the guy or girl some objectives and evaluate him once a year on progress. It is not rocket science. You can either hire a rich guy or pay a poor guy enough so he doesn't have to steal. Lee Kuan Yew, famously said, “If you pay peanuts, you get monkeys,"

Before you get Arnold to work as a governor, he needs to be elected. Your argument is flawed because the people whom we like to take care of this country don't get elected in the first place. You might as well tell me to hire God. But if the man above doesn't get elected, he wouldn't be able to govern, would he?

You said "You write a job description and give the guy or girl some objectives and evaluate him once a year on progress. It is not rocket science".

Right but that's not how we choose the prime minister, is it? Be realistic. This ain't rocket science.

  12. google is your best friend => here is the list of all italian restaurants in Bangkok.

Your best bet would be the Deck By The River which is the letter J on google map. Click on it to see the review.

Aquatini Riverside Bar & Restaurant is probably your 2nd choice. The review is on the second page.

  13. Thailand I think Thailand is smaller in size and population and GNP than California (maybe someone can check) and Arnold Schwarzenegger ran California. How hard could it be?

Most governors in Thai districts or provinces are appointed but not elected, excluding Bangkok and Pattaya. Strangely enough, I have not yet seen you moaning about it. Where is your democrazy now?

Thailand in terms of land mass (198,115 sq mi) is slightly larger to that of the state of California (163,696 sq mi). The population of Thailand is 67 millions while california holds 38 millions.

The problem those protesters at democratic monument are concerning is mainly related to legislative, not executive. You will never see anyone govern this country in a just democratic way, until legislative branch has been dealt with. That's why we need this reform before there is an election.

Btw Which nation would be your best candidate to colonize Thailand, if you don't mind telling me?

  14. Those are things any government can contract out. I meant contracting out the function of government as China did with Hong Kong. Seeing how the Thai government has done since the 1930's is basically an exorcise on missed chances and corruption. I'd give up if I were you. 100 years of failure is enough. Hire someone who can run a state around here like Singapore. Contract out the Parliament, PM and cops and Army. Be realistic. Thailand is a wonderful country with a lousy government.

That's why I said Thailand should embrace libertarianism.

Hong Kong became a colony of the British Empire after the First Opium War (1839–42). The Hong Kong Island was first ceded to the UK in perpetuity, followed by Kowloon Peninsula in 1860 and then the New Territories was put under lease in 1898. It was occupied by Japan during the Pacific War (1941–45), after which the British resumed control until 1997, when China resumed sovereignty.

Singapore is a small island with very limited natural resources. It's smaller than Phuket. You can run things around your way very easily. Turning Thailand into singapore is not very realistic.

Are you suggesting we should let Thailand be colonized by foreign nation? Which nation would be your best candidate, if you don't mind telling me?

  16. You have not contracted out government to another country. No that is not what we have been doing. Don't lie. I know it is easier than telling the truth but a lie is still a lie. I believe Singapore contracts out part of their defense to the UK (someone who knows can speak to that). Singapore is not a stupid country. It's also not a democracy. Thailand is not ready for self government. Best do what Hong Kong did. Long term lease.

The Five Power Defence Arrangements (FPDA) are a series of defence relationships established by a series of bilateral agreements between the UK, australia, New Zealand, Malaysia and sigapore (all Common wealth members) signed in 1971, whereby the five states will consult each other in the event of external aggression or threat of attack against Peninsular Malaysia and Singapore. The UK has the following personnel and facilities based in Malaysia and Singapore in support of the FPDA: a small Naval facility at Sembawang in Singapore and staff in the Integrated Area Defence System Headquarters (HQ IADS) at Butterworth in Malaysia. Staff at Sembawang total one Commander Royal Navy (who also serves as the Assistant Defence Attaché to Singapore), one Chief Petty Officer, one Petty officer and three Ministry of Defence civil servants.

I don't think contracted out government to another country would be the right word for FPDA. And btw I said libertarian meaning privately own. If the government decide to let there be competition in term of management of the public property, that would be fine. If the government decide to give a single entity to operate its property then that's not libertarian, is it?

ITO JV is an organization formed among Italian-Thai Development PCL, Takenaka corporation and Obayashi corporation, a team with mastery of architectural, constructional, and electrical/mechanical/plumbing techniques that was responsible for main-contracting Suvarnabhumi Airport. Airport of Thailand PLC (บริษัท ท่าอากาศยานไทย จำกัด) was accused of illegally hire ITO to build its conveyor system.

Scandal surrounding CTX 9000 which is sold to airport of Thailand PLC can be found here but it's all in Thai. To make the story short, ITO was required to build inline screening of luggages as part of new airport security protocol, so it contacts Invision, an american national company, to sell CTX 9000. Invision instead of selling the machine, asked ITO to contact its representative in Thailand aka Patriot. In the end, airport of Thailand PLC paid ITO 2.6 billion bahts, while ITO paid patriot 2 billion and patriot paid Invision 1.4 billion. Despite 3 contracts was made, all inventory and procurement operations under all contracts are identical in all respects.

None of this would be on the news, had there be no merger between invision and GE, a company in the U.S. market in 2004. Due to merger of a company in US market, internal investigation was made so that integration would be deemed transparent. However, it appears that the law firm which conducted the inspection had declared Invision may be committing an offense under the FCPA (foreign corruption practice act). Later on, Invision was found guilty by united states district court, northern district of california. The document relating to the case can be found here.

Scandal surrounding the contract between Thai government and STEYR - DAIMLER - PUCH Spezial fahrzeug AG&CO KGsty, a large manufacturing conglomerate based in Steyr, Austria can be found here. The document is also in Thai.

I'm too lazy to translate everything for you. While don't you learn some thai and read it yourself? It might change your perspective on contracting out government businesses.

  17. Although he has promised many benefits Thailand would received under the ′People′s Council′, such as the eradication of corruption and evil politicians, Mr. Suthep has never explained in-depth details of the council, other than insisting that it would be composed of "moral" people.

Mr. Suthep likewise did not name any potential candidate for the People′s Council, but said its members would not be registered to any political party.

    http://www.thaivisa.com/forum/topic/688660-establish-peoples-council-or-no-election-suthep/

Perhaps you could provide some link to answer who, what, where and when of the Peoples Council?

Because if it is not in print it didn't happen.

If you ask me, I like Thailand to go libertarian. That'll definitely end corruption. As for the people's council, I don't know who they will be. But at least, it's better than what we have now. If you don't believe me, why don't you check the biography of each MP and ministry of for Thai party?

Why don't you tell me what we should do? Have another fake election and allow sadam and hitler-like people to rule the country and hope for the best?

When you wanted a new airport you hired someone to design and build it from outside of Thailand. Siemens supplies the Skytrain. Government is too complicated for Thai people. You need to farm it out to Singapore. They will do a better job for a fraction of the price without corruption.

That's what we have been doing, silly. We hired InVision until it was found guilty of foreign corrupt practice act by the US government. What about hopewell, in case you don't remember? There are more instances too many to be listed here. I'll be back in a couple hours, my last patient is waiting now.

  18. Too bad, I'm a Thai national, I was born and raised in Thailand. I'm amazed at how people enjoy commenting on Thai politic despite the fact they don't read Thai newspaper.

So what you're saying is that you believe everything you read in the Thai newspapers??

    cheesy.gif

    Thanks, that was hilarious.

I don't need to read the Thai newspapers to realise what's going on. All I need to do is look at Suthep, his schizophrenic rhetoric, read how he personally ordered troops to open fire on unarmed civilians in front of the temple at Wat Pathum and understand that this moron has managed to convince a supposedly "educated" middle class that the only way to save democracy is to uproot it.

hahaha at least, he did not leave the country and fight it out in court.

Two wolves and a lamb vote on what they'll eat for dinner. If that's your kind of democracy, it deserves to be uprooted.

If you think all democratic constitutions are all just, please think again. If not, why don't you fight it out with this guy.
