Sir, if I opened an account with, lets say, Citibank, would I be offered the same benefits as Bangkok Bank? Citibank did not offer me migration benefits when I moved funds from the US to India; they opened a new account for me here. Will my account in Mumbai help me open another account in Bangkok with same benefits as a new customer? The idea is to move funds between accounts as seamlessly and of course I wouldnt mind leaving a minimum in my Thai Citi account when I am not there.

    Hi Aditi,

I am unfamiliar with citibank as I do not have an account with em.

Sorry for not being able to help you there.

Dont call me Sir. Just moon, or dude will do. ?

"Which sentence or where did I say it is a requirement from embassies to the indivduals?"

Probably nowhere but then I'm not going to try to find it because I didn't say that you did say that!

"I stated the requirements of Bangkok Bank and how to get a savings account with them for sure. Thats all."

That's not all.  The reason this started was you specifically advised the OP to get a recommendation letter from his Embassy, saying it was an easy 10 minute exercise.  That is telling the OP that his Embassy will provide a letter to assist in opening an acoount.  That's a lot more than stating one of BBL's requirements.

"I did not dictate anything at all. I think you are too fast to presume here."

Perhaps it was you being too fast by speculating that the OP's Embassy will provide a bank reference letter.

"From my experience, Singapore embassy gave a quite a few Letter of recommendations to open all my saving accounts in Thailans."

Very strange that you choose to bring that up so late in the discussion when it is so relevant.

"PS. I have read from other British Nationals here who had gotten their letter of recommendation from British embassy in TVF."

Really, but no link to the subject?  The subject doesn't come up in a search, oddly enough, I suppose the forum must be hiding the posts.

Seriously I am just offering help to the OP by offering information thats is accurately accordingly to the requirments of Bangkok Bank in Thailand.

And I have open a few bank accounts with different banks here as well following the rules set by the banks here so I did not leave it to chance but had all proper documents as per required by the banks.

I honestly do not know what is your issue? Is it to just come here and argue against every single comment here like how I see you are doing to me and others? Or are you sincerely offering help to the OP? What have you done so far for the OP besides trying to argues against me or some others here who have had real 1st hand experience with real bank accounts in Thailand?

So far I have had the pleasure of helping provide accurate info for opening of bank account on tourist visa for most of my friends and some other expats I have came across in Thailand without leaving it up to chance.

I have aldy provided links to the banks website in my earlier post to the OP.

As for you I would suggest you google the info you want for yourself either that or get a life be really try to be more helpful here in this forum, instead of asking me silly questions and stating i said this or that, when I did not at all.

Go back and read all your own comments and see if they are in anyway productive or helpful for the OP.

All my comments and statements for opening bank account while on tourist visa are easily back by the link for Bangkok Bank's I had provided.

    What is TVF?

Yes the translation is will be done for a fee, but by an appointed trusted translator, it might take a day or 2 for em to send the documents back n forth

depending on the difficulty of your language, some can be quite ex. I rmb getting my marriage certs translated from thai to english which were quite cheap, but my friend who is german and married a Thai husband got hers from German to Thai and that cost quite a bomb.

TVF stands for Thai Visa Forum.

No I am not annoyed, i am more than happy to share my own experiences if they can in anyway benefit you or others here. That is what this forum is for. I in return have gotten help from ubonjoe and some others here too when I was still pretty green in Thailand.

Laws and regulations changes now and then. Always good to ask and be prepared than to presume and fail.

    Ask Away!

I understand what you said but what I am disputing is not what BBL would like to have from an applicant but your assertion that Embassies will provide a recommendation letter for a stranger to open an account.  Just because it is an option that Bangkok Bank will accept doesn't mean an Embassy will provide it.  In your experience which Embassies will do it?  I know of none.

Which sentence or where did I say it is a requirement from embassies to the indivduals?

Sir where can I find the text for the statutory declaration, which I guess becomes a true copy when they stamp and sign it (right?)? And if a Swede doesnt know English or Thai, where can he get help to draft these letters.

The letter of recommendation supplied by my embassy was in English and it did not need to be translated to Thai for Bangkok Bank as they accepted it in English.

But if yours is in swede I supposed you have to translate it to Thai as swede might not be an accepted language.

Which in this case you have to get the letter of recommendation from embassy then translate it to Thai, then go back to your embassy for them to certify the translation as well.

Depending on the cost of translation, n travelling here n there might cost you

Have you got a template for this reference letter? Will Word application have it? And another thing: if I haven't got a portable printer where can I get a letter printed.

Surely there will be charges when I want to close the account. Is it possible for me to transfer the funds in this account to my Swede account online?

    Or are the funds non-repatriable?

The letter is supplied by the embassy. All u need is yourself, enough thai baht for the letter and your passport.

Would this be free of cost? For reason can you say Personal?

I rmb it was free for me. Though different embassy might have differen rules. U might want to call them up 1st and enquire but it really should not cost u anything at all.

For reason it does not hurt to state opening of bank account right? Cos thats what you want.

I put it down as such to avoid any misunderstanding or further inconvienient myself.

  8. 9 hours ago, Just Weird said:

You're joking, right, which embassies will do that?  The British Embassy won't, that's for sure.  Maybe you're a Swede and have personal experience of that embassy being helpful in that area?

The fact that you say it's a 10 minute procedure suggests that you are taking the piss.  What risk is there, anyway, in opening a bank account that a letter from an embassy will mitigate?  Why would any embassy recommend to a bank that a complete stranger to them would be a suitable person to operate an account?

    Hi Just Weird,

I have been residing in Thailand for 7 years and married for 3 here.

I have a few bank accounts with Bangkok Bank, Kasikorn and KrungSri.

According to the OP, he wants to get a bank account with a Tourist visa.

Most banks except for Bangkok Bank will not allow any opening of bank account with tourist visa.

I am not quoting or giving misinformation out of thin air.

I have enquire and through my own experience with the banks here offered the information as per adviced by Bangkok Bank.

Letter of recommendation for purpose of opening bank account is not that hard to aquired from your own embassy.

You can kindly call up Bangkok Bank if you like to ask.

Or the information is freely available here.

    http://www.bangkokbank.com/BangkokBank/PersonalBanking/SpecialServices/ForeignCustomers/Pages/Account.aspx

PS. Letter of Recommendation is really only a 5 to 10mins affair. Your embassy produces a letter and you write down your reason on it and they officially sign n stamp it and voila. Thats all.

  9. For the surest way without any risk. Go to your embassy and ask them for a letter of recommendation for purpose of opening bank account. Takes about 10mins procedure depending on the queue.

If you are living in an apartment or condo on your tourist visa stay here, get your contract as proof of address in Thailand or utilities bill or any official letter you have address to you.

Bring the above 2 with your passport and valid tourist visa stamp in it to the main HQ branch of Bangkok Bank( google it) or call them up to confirm the location.

Arm with all of the above you should be able to open a savings account with Bangkok Bank. If you do not have your proof of address cos you are in an hotel now, no probs, print out your hotel booking or ask the hotel staff for billing that you in the hotel now. Good luck

  10. Hi The Girl, as an previous overstayer myself of an even longer period than you and of in an even sticker situation than you.

It is very simple if you want the least hassle.

The answer has aldy been answered many times in this thread and unless you have new issues or questions, there is only 1 best way out.

20k baht, air tix out, etd straight to the airport. Tm6 fill in new at airport. No need to contact immigration b4 that. N i hope u dont get check or stop by police or immigration b4 this becos its straight to detention for u if u r caught b4 going to airport.

Stay low profile n especially of the streets of sukhumvit where they like to conduct random  checks on foreigners.

Familiar yourself with your surroundings n the best way around without meeting police. Wishing n praying for your safe departure

yea his comment pretty much made it seem like some here are ready to mete out justice to this 9 years overstayer but willing to let the hiso red bull heir go for his crime.

A foreigner on overstay! Oh my god! lets slaughter him! throw book at him ..full weight of the law!

....All while pretty much letting a rather well of high so that killed and dragged a policeman dozens of meters down the road flaunt the law and get away pretty much scott free for years!

Derek calm down, most here are not lynching this foreigner.

Most are just offering their 0.2 worth and some more valuable.

As for the hiso getting away with anything is pretty irrelevant to bring up here.

  13. Problem is I see people in recent times being arrested and sent back to Suan Plu with a dead ticket and a "check this guy out for any outstanding legal issues call" !

You may be lucky but then again you may not!  If you can afford the potential wasted ticket that is fine!

BadBanker, are you saying that even with legal travelling documents, an air ticket out, enough to pay the 20,000baht fine, might get one sent back to the IDC for check of criminal records?

I had overstayed b4 ( not proud of it), went to the airport with all of the above, answered all enquiries by the immigration (they were very nice to me), flew out without any problems and came back within a month.

  14. Best thing to do is buy an air ticket out of the country, surrender yourself at the airport with legal travelling documents and 20,000 baht fine

9 years here and your friend should be fluent in Thai, that should be a plus for communicating with the immigration officers.

Tell the immigration your sob story about why you overstay when asked. They might have pity on your situation and not banned you.

Once you leave, if you have no blacklisted stamp on your passport, you should be free to come back again.

Before leaving your friend can check with them if he is blacklisted. I think it would be 50/50 even with the laws in place now.

If you wanna know ALL the info it could take days. I only brought up issued regarding my visa. When people asked me about additional details, I did my best to oblige.

I don't see anywhere in this thread where I showed "attitude". I do appreciate everyone's help. But it's frustrating to have people making assumptions and filling gaps with the little info given. I'm more sensible than you think. But I also believe that justice could still exist.

    Yeah, i understand you Charlotte.

Even if despite our advice you want to come back and sort matters out.

Please at least kindly take this advice make sure you are always safe and make sure you have a friend and plan to be able to get out if things go south.

If you lose your life then nothing is really worth it anymore. Ok?
