It was a grilled pulled-pork sandwich from Dukes.  Really delicious, especially when nice and warm!  Ok, so you can tell when you're living with a farang when he warms up his grilled sandwich that he bought from a restaurant that caters to farangs.

Now, lol, back to living with Thais...............

I find that heating the Cuban sandwiches from Duke's in an oven does a better job than the microwave... Glad to know I'm not the only farang that plans ahead for their gastronomical needs... Now off to Butter is Better for breakfast!!!

  2. you need air con and farang food because you are all babies... without your 75k you will moan and cry all day long for your mamaaaaaa !

kids, it s time to grow up and become a real man.

    smile.png

A real man has created options, accrued resources, makes decisions, and chooses his lifestyle.

A lesser man is dictated to by his failures, and attempts to conceal it with shallow bravado.

From what I've seen it's mostly luck.

Although the boasters always want to portray themselves as better than everyone else.

All the big money I earned, luck not judgement.

All the money I lost, luck not judgement.

Lucky I came through it all at age 45, with enough to last the rest of my life.

I'd rather consider myself a lucky man, than boast to all that I was a 'real man'!

I dunno, sounds like sour grapes to me... If you had 74k a month to live on, you wouldn't be bitching at those that do... We make our own luck...

There is a reason it takes 65k a month to secure a retirement extention... Yes , we all know that it came done cheaper, but what about unplanned expenses that always seem to pop up?

Here is just one example that blows a 30k a month budget.. Over the last 3 months I've had 150k in dental work done... How does someone on a 30k budget swing that?

  3. I've spent quite a bit of time in Panama, Costa Rica and Colombia... Nothing wrong with living in Panama, except for a few basic things...

First, there are only around 3.5 million people in the entire country... Not a lot of people around unless you are in Panama City...

Imported goods are expensive and since very little is made in Panama, everything from food to furniture is costly... You may not be able to find certain goods you are accustomed to using...

Panama does not issue their own currency and uses the USD as it's official currency... Price controls on goods were introduced some time ago due to the rise in the USD on the world FX market and caused the price on imported goods to sky rocket and shortages ensued... Being tied to the USD will also have an inflationary effect on assets until the USD normalizes or crashes...

There is not a lot to do in Panama... Boredom is a problem with expats... If you think Thailand is a cultural wasteland, you will not like Panama...

Corruption is rife in the government and police force... If you want something done, you have to grease the works... Nothing new for a seasoned Thai expat...

Outside Panama City, being able to speak Espanol is a necessity...

Crime is an issue within Panama in all forms; kidnappings, extortion, credit card / ATM fraud, violent crime...

It is a latin country, so expect the machista attitude amongst men...

Having said the above, Panama made the my top 5 places to live once I left the USA... Thailand was number 1 on the list and I'm still here...

  4. ok....but what is it explaining ?.....does the text suggest you call people by this name or does it talk about this term being an offensive name and shouldn't be used ?

Nothing wrong in explaining the roots and meaning of this term....

Depending on what it actually says - it could be deemed racist or educational

That's a stretch, even for you SP... cheesy.gif

  5. I too feel fortunate to be living in Thailand and yes, luck does have something to do with it... Yes, I have worked hard my entire life, been smart enough to avoid manual labor and wise enough to have the funds so I can enjoy retirement here... The luck comes into play in that I was born into a good family in a 1st world nation, providing opportunities not available to most Thais... As the saying goes, there by the grace of God go I...

yes we dont chose where we are born or who we are born to.poverty can come down to laziness, poor education and also poor parenting,in the west all these things can be overcome through government education programs that are usually free if you are unemployed, but in thailand there is little encouragement from the thai establishment.Quite simply they are happy to keep the poor poor, that is why there is little effort to raise the educational standards here.

I was having this convo with my GF recently... Today, she is uni educated and has a good position with the Thai government, but she was born into a poor farming family near CM... As a kid she had to work in the rice paddies and told me that at times her hands and legs would hurt so bad that she would cry herself to sleep, knowing that she would have to go back into the fields the next day... Her father and mother did not want this life for her, so they sacrificed to put her through university... She focused on getting through school, then to find a good job so she could take care of her family... I respect her for her tenacity and devotion to her family... Integrity is a character traits that cannot be faked...

  7. I used to do Archery as a hobby back in the states until the arthritis in my neck got too bad. it was a lot of fun.

I believe that there is an archery range just off the SW part of the moat if I'm not mistaken.

There is an archery range on the same property as the Star Dome Golf course...

I've got more hobbies than I have time to enjoy them all... sad.png

    Cycling

    Motorcycles

    Golf

    Gym

    Swimming

    Cooking

    R/C airplanes

    Reading

    Travel / exploring new places

    Learning more Thai language
    Socializing (if that's a hobby)
  8. Well they did a great job of stopping and getting rid of the border run people.

They did a great job of stopping and getting rid of the Ed Visa people.

Now they starting to target the retirees.

Very easy to do, cease accepting POI statements and increase the required deposit in a Thai bank account.

What if the required deposit was increased to 1.5mil THB. How many retirees would a move like that get rid of? 50-60-70%?

Get rid of those cheating with multiple border runs and claiming to be tourists............ Check!

Get rid of those lying and cheating about getting an education for an ED visa..........Check!

Getting rid of those who submit false income letters to obtain retirement visas............Why Not?

So many expats are constantly criticizing Thailand about all of the corruption here.

I guess the corruption is O.K. when it is the expats lying and cheating to get what they want??

    Get over yourselves.

If you can not afford to be here without cheating, you should leave.

Thailand does not really care if we are here or not....we are not god's gift to Thailand!

A good many expats are nothing but a pain in the butt to Thailand.

Keep sniveling and make it even worse!

What a load of patronising nonsense. Bet you were the kid in the class who reported all your mates to the teacher. Name one expat who cheats on his income declaration. You should be supporting your fellow expats not slagging them. I find you pretty despicable.

Hmm, based on your response I guess you are a little short on monthly income to continue to qualify for the retirement extension... whistling.gif

  9. It's not just coffee shops that suffer from squatters taking up space and not buying anything... I stopped at one of my favorite places for a late breakfast yesterday... It's a small place with only 8 tables... Half of the tables were occupied by foreigners on their laptops using the free wifi... They were still there after I finished my meal, paid and left... How can a business survive if half their resources are consumed by freeloaders?

  10. Why are there so many expats slanging their home country,to me it is worse than Thai bashing. If they did not have the benefit of education and work then they would not be here,or any other country.I find them obnoxious, very quick to condemn Thai basher, but very slow to admit what their nanny states have given them.In my opinion you are worse and traitors to your heritage.

I don't think it is slagging off their home countries, more to do with changing circumstances. I have empathy for those who see political correctness surpassing common sense.

As for the benefit of education and work.................

I am sure there are many like me who didn't go the college/university route. In my case, through choice, as I saw a huge world out there that needed looking at. I spent 23 years in the military doing just that, and believe me, any debt that I may have had to my country was fully paid during that time.

All my qualifications and knowledge, in this ever-changing part of my life, have been acquired without the help of my 'home country'; I am not stuck in the past but live for the future. Have always been like that and not planning to change in the near future.

As to being a traitor to my heritage, dream on and grow up a bit..............................wink.png

Political Correctness is a nuisance I can deal with... What is transpiring in the US goes beyond insanity... I love my country, but hate what has happened to it and want no part of what it has become...

  11. typo

I don't think you get it....

We are saying that we can not be forced to return to our country of origin.

Other than being deported, where you are forced to go to your country of origin, there are always other options.

If I were deported, I would return to America and then leave again.

I am American, I have the right not to live there if I so choose!cheesy.gif

I would not return to the US either... There are 196 countries on this planet and if forced to leave Thailand I would pick any one of the others to hang my hat...

  12. Easy to kick your brain into neutral living in Thailand and just coast... That's fine for a while as the OP noted, until you get bored... Most of us work the majority of our lives to earn enough to enjoy of nice retirement, then once retired have no idea what to do with the time... Take up a hobby, find interests you can explore regardless of you locale, read, go to the gym, go cycling, travel, write a book on your experiences, learn to cook, laugh, challenge yourself every day...

    Attitude is everything...

  13. Immigration or the police can ask for your passport at any time. That is why is is suggested to at least have a copy of your photo page and entry/permit to stay stamp with you at all times. But a copy does not have to be accepted they could still ask for you to get your original.

I could understand a tourist carrying his passport for a few weeks, but for an expat carrying it all year long ?

For me it a no no , I have very good very detailed photos of it on my telephone...but in Samui? When they make a check point for helmets they do not even ask the driving license to any one.

I also take photos of my passport picture page and visa pages and keep them on my phone... Have not had it questioned yet...

  14. You ran away. cheesy.gif

I realized a long time ago that I am but a cog in the machine and that anyone that rails against the machine in a significant manner is squashed like a bug... That might be your idea of idealism, but hardly mine... I also realized there was little to nothing one person could do to stop the crimes being committed by the US... Hell, they are well known and in the media daily... You can choose to stand in the way of a tsunami, but not me... I left to spend the rest of my days in relative peace and quiet, away from the upcoming social and economic crisis heading toward the western world...

Perhaps you have heard of some of these folks that tried to blow the whistle on US indiscretions...

    Andrew Breitbart

    Michael Hastings

    Edward Snowdon

    Julian Assange

    John Kiriakao

    Thomas Drake

    Bradley Manning

    Phillip Marshall

and on and on and on...

Here is a bit of reading on the topic if you are so inclined...

  15. Interesting things people say about Americans, but when they need our help their hands come right out.

Americans are amongst the most benevolent yo those less fortunate, and there isn't widespread sending of their daughters away to work I'm brothels so the mother's and brothers to drink and gamble

Let me know how many Carnegie and Ford foundations are in Thailand and let's not argue that Carnegie was a Scot.

He could have gone to Thailand to create his fortunes, but he didnt, did he

Oh <deleted>, take your nationalistic BS and shove it... The US has interfered, manipulated, assassinated leaders, curried favor through arms deals, facilitated the global heroin trade, committed genocide and on and on and on for the last 60 years... The world would be a better place if the US would take of their own mess at home and leave the rest of the world alone... No one and I mean NO ONE asked the US to be the world cop... BTW, I am a US citizen too, but I don't wear blinders...

As a US citizen, what did you do about the 'mess at home' ... besides whining all the time?

The US government does not take kindly to anyone that criticizes or exposes their crimes... I did what any one person can to do when faced with the realization that their government is corrupt to the core, I left...
