  1. I think a dummy e-mail address, Facebook/google+/Linkedin or similar account, and bank account would be a good idea. These can be set up to provide a benign profile. One could even establish a djamie type second avatar on TVN, the formula is pretty simple (minded). A VPN is pretty much essential anyway if you want to keep well informed about what is going on as much of the information you need to access is blocked within the country. I would suggest in this case honesty is not the best policy, especially if your principles are on the liberal side and you exercise your human right to freedom of expression in defiance of the regime.

  2. When my wife was refused a visa because I did not supply enough/the right evidence, I went through the written appeal process and it was OK second time. If you have what they need and they have told you exactly what that is, then supply it for the appeal and you should be good. I also got my MP to write a letter of support which he was willing to do. Don't know if that helped but it made me feel good.

Incidentally the first time I went through this process, I got a job in Portugal first, Brought my wife there on a Schengen visa via the Portuguese embassy. That was a relatively easy process at the time (late 90s) After a year in Portugal the family moved to UK and the residence visa was automatic and free of charge. There are some advantages to living in the EU. So if you have lived and worked in any EU country - and many of them have easier visa application processes - you have an automatic right to take up residence in UK with your dependents regardless of their nationality. At least that is my understanding.

  3. I am NOT familiar with a Thai marriage visa or extension of stay based on Marriage, but logic tells me that the best witness should be your wife, shouldn't it?

my wife was there with me. There may be a credibility issue with a Thai wife. I think the witness relieves them of the duty of inspecting ones place of residence to see if you are actually living (together) where you say you are and haven't taken pictures outside some random address.

Would a Farang lie to an Immigration official?

  4. I recently travelled to Vientiane to switch from a Non B visa to a non O as I have retired....

There is no need to leave country when going fro a non-imm 'B' visa, or extension for employment, to extension of stay for retirement. Just get a letter of cancellation of work permit and on the same doing go to immigration to cancel current extension and obtain a new one for a different reason.

This is normally the case, but my employer had not cancelled or handed back the work permit and Pattaya Immigration rudely and firmly refused to complete the process without a cancellation stamp which had to be done up North where I had been working. It was far easier to leave the country at Vientiane and cancel the B visa that way than try to sort out the mess which would have involved just as much travelling, Labour offices as well as immigration, and co-operation from an unsympathetic and lethargic ex employer.

  5. I recently travelled to Vientiane to switch from a Non B visa to a non O as I have retired. I had to get a letter from the British Embassy to confirm my pension income which was the most expensive part of the process at just under 2500 Baht. I did not need to show any bank book/statement or provide proof of my address However apart from that the whole procedure was quite straightforward and they have a chart on the wall by the windows showing the steps involved and where to do each bit. If your car is not on finance you can even drive over to Laos yourself with a car passport which can be obtained in Nong Khai and with the purchase of insurance for Laos. (remembering to drive on the "wrong side").

I got my last visa in Penang which was also OK but poorer value for travel and hotels.

The queue was long to get a number and you need to run the usual gauntlet of "helpful" people outside the embassy - but the form you need is inside.
