Really? I guess you have to tell us what you describe as "peasant food", because Phnom Penh is pretty similar to any major city in Asia in that there's quite a wide range of different restaurants and it's really up to you as to what you like to eat. Your inability to spell the city name doesn't speak well of your standing in terms of knowledge. Vientiane is a great city for food, you won't find better value in the region. Superb French, excellent Italian, and at ridiculously low prices. Easiest city to get around in the region too.

Peasant food is the sort of food people like you eat at home.....simple, cheap, unpleasant and tasteless. As for spelling city names, the only correct spelling would be written in Khmer script.

You raise a good point on why are foreigners taken to a private hospital rather than a government hospital in the first instance . I think i know the reason and that is for the ambulance personell receive a remittence for bringing in the prey for the private hospital .

I was involved in an accident on a motorcycle  where I wa taken to a private hospital . I remember nothing about how i arrived there . When i realised more what was going on i asked to be taken to a goverment hospital and that was done . Yet there was a 28,000 baht invoice given for nothing more than laying on a bed for 12 hours .

I learnt that according to law if a person is unconcious then the ambulance staff are obliged to take you to the nearest government hospital .

And the first 2 days in Emergency should be free. The Rescue boys will drive past any number of govt hospitals to deposit you at the kickback private. And they do it to Thais also

  3. I got Apigat (Eliquis clone), from India, no probs. by post. Next shipment, had to go to Chaeng Watt ana, see the FDA girl, and shipment seized! My wife said, can we pay money?, and she said, no, too many cameras. But now that borders are open again, just go to Oz. 150 baht for a months supply whereas 4,500 baht here.

  4. Left chest pain is stress related usually. Left arm could be angina??. Just had a CT scan in Sydney for blood in urine, and went in feet first. (Big kidney stone. Phew!). Also, they wouldn't normally give a GA; sedation usually.

When are you blokes going to start trusting government hospitals. Not only are private hospitals expensive, (have to be), but I suspect there's a lot of overservicing. I had a 3 hour op at the Police General, and the anaesthetist was about 6,000 baht.

You can spare yourself the effort to go to Immigration to check this.

It is indeed correct that the spouse needs to be present when applying for a 1-year extension of your Non Imm O Visa for reason of Marriage.

But even if Immigration would allow it, he would not be able to switch to a Retirement extension, because in such case he would have to show that he not only meets the 2 month 400K 'seasoning' requirement for the Marriage extension, but ALSO the 12 month required Funds for the Retirement extension (i.e. 800K/400K over the last 12 months).

A 'fixer' Agent might help him out on that one.

And alternatively also a border-run and returning VisaExempt would allow him to start with a fresh slate, and apply for the 90-day Non Imm O Visa for reason of retirement subsequently followed by the 1-year extension application. But of course that would mean that he would be able to provide evidence of 800K on his personal Thai bank-account  (with foreign origins proven, i.e. being transfered from abroad).

Bottom line: When you are skint, there is only one option and that is engaging a fixer Agent.

I think I'm about to try the "fixer agent" route. I'm sick of the unfair and changing rules! Just applied for Laos e-visa, to go to Savannaket, but 1 week later, nothing arrived. So $51.75 down the drain. After 25 years I've had enough. The Thai government thinks we're idiots, my wife of 20 years thinks I'm an idiot. I'm surrounded by 3rd world morons who don't speak English, who don't wear crash helmets, and who've never heard of Barry Humphries. So where do I find one of these agents?

    Yes, yes yes.

But is it better to watch for the police than the wife? Two of my friends died in the area I am now. Both mysteriously. Very mysteriously!!! Better to be looking over yer shoulder than being brown bread.

You could be here many years without anyone bothering you about documentation. Just make sure you have a couple of hundred in yer back pocket.

I met a Swedish guy in Patts who had been here for many years without any. That was 15/16 years ago. I wonder if he is still about?!

2 of your friends died in mysterious circumstances Pull the other one, Walter Mitty!

This applies (would have applied) to foreign arrivals into Thailand, how many times per year do you fly out and back into Thailand to consider this a fleecing? And about airlines, and airports abroad, perhaps you should read the breakout of your ticket fare and check how many thousands and thousands of baht (not 300) we pay in hidden fees on each ticket.

EXample: Lufthansa. Years ago I used my miles to fly "for free" in business class from Frankfurt to Shanghai and back. Between LH and the airport, they charged me 700 EUR in fees. Now that I call a fleecing.

In this case airlines simply stated the obvious, that it's impossible for them to determine which passengers would have to pay. They were certainly not doing that to protect you or me.

    Air Miles don't cover taxes.

Where to start with this one? I take it you're with the TAT given that you're talking about the "quality tourists" and think that silly admin fees don't deter people from coming. You may be surprised to discover that Cambodia is no longer a war-torn craphole and has quite nice infrastructure all over the place nowadays, and Laos is on the way as well. Cambodia got 16 million tourists over Songkran, not sure what the numbers were in Thailand but as someone who thinks like the TAT you could probably tell me off the top of your head. Is there some Wonder of the World in Thailand that competes with Angkor that I'm not aware of? Couldn't get a hotel room in Luang Prabang, but closed hotels all over the Night Bazaar area in Chiang Mai and discounts galore. Air quality in LP was worse too.

Most meals in Cambodia are peasant food. Sometimes, Siem Reap not bad, and I went to a new sushi restaurant in Pnom Pen, but the waitress had decayed front teeth! Some ok French restaurants in Vientiane and even Leffe beer.

You will find a lot of information on websites devoted to histamine intolerance.  There are conflicting opinions as to whether it can be cured or not.  Another possibility is that you may have C. Difficile. There are antibiotics to treat that and I am taking one right now.  I also take Prevacid to keep the acidity of my stomach low.  With a hiatal hernia I must keep the reflux into my throat mild.

Also, I recently found that some of my allergic symptoms appear to be caused by the E. Coli pneumonia in the lower left lobe of my lung.   It’s proving to be a tough bug to kill.  It’s resistant to many antibiotics.  I may need another hospitalization and more IV antibiotics to kill it.  Pneumonia is easily discovered by a chest x-ray.  I have one every two weeks.   It’s not easy to be an 80-year-old senior citizen.

    You miss my point.

Maintaining 400k in Thai bank for 2 months + under consideration period and then being able to live off it for 9 months is a sweet deal.

I specifically referenced those that couldn't obtain a ME non O marriage during covid and couldn't "transfer 400k" until borders open.

Heaven forbid they require medical treatment.

In the last 12 months I had a hip replacement which (kid you not) was 400k.

    Can't put 400k in a bank for 3 months!!......cry me a river..

When I first came to live in Thailand 25 years ago, my best mate worked in the Oz Embassy, and had spent a large part of his working life in SE Asia. One of his words of advice was that people make the mistake of treating the Thai baht as Monopoly money, and undervaluing it, and don't realise just how much they are spending. 400,000 baht is almost 1 year's pension. ie. Almost 1 year's living, so these rip-off deposits are not insignificant if you think about it.

You can do as many illegal things as you like - as long as you are willing to live with the possible consequences. Could be deportation, could be getting sick because of STDs or whatever. The illegal thing is up to you but the punishment not anymore.

"What about how most of us met our partners, isn't prostitution illegal too?"

Is it really that bad? Most of them have prostitutes as partners? ????????????

    He's a class act!

  12. In Sydney at the moment. Went to Thai Consulate for non-imm. O (marriage), visa. No can do! Need to apply online, scan documents etc. Then in 4 to 8 weeks will send you an appointment time to bring in the form, documents, and money. Then you should receive visa within 10 days. Unbelievable dumb a......holes! During covid, been doing it at Chantaburi immigration. But my 450,000 baht is down to 300,000, due to buying some land. Could bring $5,000 from Oz, but rate is down to 22 baht, and need 2 months seasoning anyway. So coming back to Thailand this weekend without a visa. So looks like Savannaket is the go. Living here is a constant battle of wits with the po-faced bureaucrats!
