So this is about the before tax wage, 4000 EUR - 5600 EUR. As I stated already in posts before:

Tax is at this incoming already at 42%. So, 5000 EUR - 42% = 2900 EUR. That is for a specialist doctor. For the assistant doctor with the same degree but without specialization it is even lower. It is one of highest paying jobs in Germany (personally I only know of the head doctors getting more, judges and politicians).
Edit: I even forgot solidarity surcharge of 5.5% on top of the payable tax of 42%. Example: 42% of 5000 EUR = 2100 EUR and there it's 5.5% added = 2215,5 EUR payable income tax.

If you were in a main town and met a few Farangs especially if you knew them at home and they were your mates and they had been in LOS a few years your money would be gone in 3 months.

Some times I looked forward to live in Bangkok but if you have kids, it is really a bad place for their health.
Every time we go to Bangkok for some days and come back to our home we all have 1-2 days a cough and are a bit sick.
Seems the body doesn't assimilate so quick.
The fine dust particles must be plenty.

To add another perspective: In Germany, you are considered poor if you have 900 EUR / month as a single household, but still 10 million Germans survive on that. That is roughly 35,000 THB. You wouldn't considered to be poor (well, there are always people who need to look down on others) in Thailand with that amount of money and I think the living standard would increase but of course you can't take big steps.
And it is always what you make out of it, if you chill with your friends every day and just enjoy your life, 35,000 THB will be plenty. If you however sit in your room and think about how to safe money on this and that I think you are in the wrong place.

Recently I bought a young pig and grilled it. It was at least 4x times cheaper than in Germany and Denmark, including the pay for the guy who butchered it.
I bake my own bread because I want to know what's in it but as it is basically carbs I rarely eat it and of course even my kids don't want to eat it
. Same goes for cereals, they (including me) all want to eat their khao tom, fried bananas,veggie omelette mix and chicken/pig sticks. I add pineapples and papaya to it. And for dinner, an imported steak that has the same quality as the meat I tend to buy in Germany and it is exactly the same price.I am quite a fan of regional food. If you want to have your sugar cereals delivered from the USA via plane, it is your decision. Of course you pay for it.
Recently in winter time I was in Germany and they wanted 8 EUR for one single papaya. 300 baht. I thought they were kidding. Yes yes, live in Germany is much cheaper than in Thailand
And about beer. In the most expensive restaurants I pay max. 120 THB for 0,63l beer. In a standard restaurant in Germany I pay at least 180 THB, for 0,5l. At least it has a German word on Leo Beer (my favorite).
To sum it up, if you buy imported products and non-regional food - I don't think it gets much more expensive - however you would at least pay the same or little more. But. Did anyone doubt that?

My ex American wife made/makes much more than USD$100K per year as a hospital executive. Find that in Thailand. Why are we scraping the bottom of the barrel when choosing a wife? Why support a poor girl and her family? Just for me, Thailand is a place to be single. I'm certainly not dragging some Isaan gal back to the States so I can support her AND send money to her family.
I'm single in a modest sized town in the US. (Salem, Oregon.) I own my home and my cars free and clear. I have no debts. I have savings. I have Medicare F which will cover anything/everything with no deductibles or co-pays.
I "could live" on 45K baht per month but I don't want to. I don't have to. I lived in Thailand for just one year on a retirement extension and that was enough. Compared to where I live all of Thailand is a shit hole of litter, garbage, rats, dirty water, dangerous highways, dangerous electricity, dodgy medical care, and bad enough manners to play loud music any time of the day or crowd in front of me in a queue. I used to think that sidewalks were for walking on, silly me.
This is my idea of what a town should look like. Nothing fancy, just organized and clean. Note garbage cans and even that ashtray lower right. This is called "civic pride" where everyone cares about litter and blocking sidewalks, etc. It's cultural.

You should add that the Zurich apartment would be absolute ghetto style while 60,000 THB rents a very nice apartment in BKK. I rented one for 20,000 THB in BKK and it would be called "luxury aparment" in Germany.

If you can'afford to live in Thailand, then where can you afford to live?!?! Seriously!
Get out of the "tourist hotspots" and learn to adapt. I'm not saying you should give up all your hobbies, never eat Western food again, never take a taxi or go to the movies, etc. but many Westerns are happy living here (myself included).
If you can't make it work here, the odds that it'll be any better/easier back in the West aren't looking too good for you.

Alberta guy, your post is biased and I can make the same biased post in favor of Canada which I will now.
I own a rather small 44sqm condo in the very center or Toronto. Current selling price is $259,000 (7 million baht).
A condo on Sukhumvit 24 that is around 30 square meters and will look like a ghetto in 10 years (as I pointed out on another thread) is going for 6mil baht from the developer. This big city price example good enough for you?
Sure, I pay tax and maintenance on my condo. Tax it $120 a month and maintenance is $365, but that includes unlimited heating/Aircon and electricity. Sure, maintenance in Thailand is much lower, but that explains the many developments that end up looking like a dump.
My variable mortgage is currently set at 1.85%. What is the average mortgage in Thailand? I believe at least 4%.... so Canada wins here too.
Taxes are high in Canada, but my uncle is going through an experimental cancer treatment which will most likely cost the tax payer a million bucks. Free for him. Canada wins big time here,
Cherries, berries, strawberries are much cheaper in Canada. So is a good quality beef and Manuka and various NZ honey. Probiotics and vitamins.... much cheaper.
Average supermarket in Canada is really well supplied even in crappy city like Hamilton. You can find a lot of imported stuff that would in Thailand cost you an arm and a leg.
Insurance costs more because they actually pay out even if you are at fault, unlike in Thailand.
Schools are free and even high quality University education will become free for poorer families (I don't agree with this, but we are strictly comparing costs).
As mentioned before, Cars, electronics, phones (buy without a plan like in Thailand) is cheaper.
Internet is reliable fast and cheap IF you go through re-sellers such as teksavvy and Wind.
The only thing I find cheaper in Thailand is the cost of transport and meds.
Everything else is more expensive. Period.
All true but I don't care because the hot tanned long haired cute females are in Thailand and not Canada.
