Israeli man arrested at Phuket Airport with 55 firearm bullets
Siamwhiteelephant replied to snoop1130's topic in Phuket News
Probably a blunder. He might've forgotten the ammo was tucked away in a luggage pocket if he'd hurriedly packed before flying. Israelis are generally well-informed about security issues. -
Belisha beacons are 'same same' as zebras at zebra crossings in Thailand - non-existent. The beacons are in many countries, including with the first zebra crossings in the UK, for additional visibility of zebra crossings for motorists. Though not addressing motorist attitude, wouldn't they help increase zebra crossing awareness here?

Thailand Named #1 Destination in Asia for Global Retirees
Siamwhiteelephant replied to snoop1130's topic in Thailand News
Why didn't they survey all the retirees themselves, the ones this is all about? But reading other posts here reminds me that the situational and economic differences even between us is enormous. I'm merely surviving. As for the media pitch, the consumption of heavily sugarcoated goods eventually results in what? -
Thai police launch crackdown on prostitution
Siamwhiteelephant replied to webfact's topic in Thailand News
Reporting in the 1599 call saying “She does crack” would cover both before and after infractions, as it suggests she habitually does it. I’ve thought long and hard about what this street talk could mean. It would also avoid using the word ‘prostitution’ and give a lowdown on approaching the crackdown. -
That's 'charming'., implying that every tourist who isn't a high earner and big spender is low "quality" and condescendingly discarded as a bottom of the barrel commodity. Excuse me a moment while I throw up. It abrogates this tourist from a person, a person potentially of better character than one "high quality" tourist.

Flood risk management plans (FRMP) should’ve already been in place. Just quickly implement the plans when flooding seems imminent, instead of running around in circles. Root of the bigger problem is downriver - protecting the sinking city of Bangkok, originally built on river delta swampland.... Difficult - the West has sinking cities, too, like London and Amsterdam. Long term, Bkk faces more flooding and a rising sea level from global climate change. Groundwater extraction and the increasing weight of Bangkok’s infrastructure causes the sinking, some places about 2 cm. a year; the sea level rise is about 0.4 cm. a year. Short of the horrendously expensive relocation of the capital city, combat groundwater extraction and global climate change.

Yes, hard to believe. But could’ve been a case of "inattentional blindness", a phenomenon first coined by psychologists. That motorcyclist might’ve ridden down that road hundreds of times before and never encountered shipping containers partially blocking it. Much like the original invisible gorilla experiment in which the participants didn’t expect to see a gorilla showing up in the middle of the basketball game and missed seeing it, he wouldn’t have expected shipping containers in the road and failed to see it in time. By my own experience, while riding a motorbike on a dark inner London, UK street I'd ridden hundreds of time before, I crashed into an unilluminated, unmarked wooden railroad sleeper... It shouldn't have been there. It was at night, I was riding out of a turn, sober but tired, and I was an experienced motorcycle courier. Contributory factors would've been his reduced alertness from the alcohol, the containers actually being moved at the time, night time, rain/water reflection? and so the high likelihood of few or no lights on the containers or warning signs, and you had a dangerous cocktail for this motorcycle accident.

Have you changed your mind on the COVID Vaccines?
Siamwhiteelephant replied to Chomper Higgot's topic in COVID-19 Coronavirus
If you mean the NZ info., it appears ogb took from the news this week of just one death linked to the Pfizer vaccine but no deaths from Covid in NZ this year so far. While hiding the statistics, you could even get away with saying "there were more deaths from the Pfizer vaccine than from Covid" because 'zero deaths' is a valid description upon which to base an assertion and the extremely low statistic is hidden. Of course, hiding extremely low statistics in this way makes a claim misleading and invalid. -
Have you changed your mind on the COVID Vaccines?
Siamwhiteelephant replied to Chomper Higgot's topic in COVID-19 Coronavirus
The deaths from vaccines is statistically tiny compared to deaths of the unvaccinated. So don’t you think this argument of deaths related to vaccines is a red herring? It’s simply untrue, twice over, that “New Zealand has had as many deaths from the Pfizer vaccine this year as it has from covid”. Firstly, NZ had no Covid fatalities this year (and only 26 last year). Secondly, there’s been only one death linked to the Pfizer vaccine. The cause of death is considered to be myocarditis, an inflammation of the heart muscle. A NZ health official said “The risk of myocarditis after the vaccine is a lot lower than risk of myocarditis after being infected with Covid-19”. In other words, if that victim had caught Covid she almost certainly still would’ve contracted myocarditis and died anyway.
