  6. BANGKOK (NNT) - The Thai government has expressed deep concern over the ongoing conflict in Myawaddy, urging Myanmar to ensure the conflict does not affect the sovereignty of both land and airspace and to maintain the safety of residents along the border. According to Department of Information Director-General and spokesperson for the Ministry of Foreign Affairs Nikorndej Balankura, Thailand communicated its urgent desire for a swift resolution to the conflict and the restoration of peace in the region in a message to the Myanmar Embassy in Thailand on April 20. In terms of military preparedness, Thailand has deployed personnel from the Ratchamanu Special Unit and the Naresuan Force along the border to closely monitor the situation. The Thai Air Force is also on alert to defend the airspace, especially following reports of increased military presence from Myanmar in the town of Kawkareik. Thailand is currently engaging in major humanitarian efforts, coordinating with Mae Sot Hospital to prepare medical supplies and equipment for emergency situations. Assistance is being provided indiscriminately to all affected, whether they are Myanmar military personnel, resistance fighters, or civilians. The Thai government is collaborating with international organizations such as UNHCR to support those fleeing the conflict, providing essentials like blankets, bedding, and drinking water and organizing food supplies through local and international partners. Thailand has also outlined conditions under which it will accept military personnel seeking refuge, requiring that they disarm and assume civilian status upon entry, assuring them of humanitarian care and a safe return only when their safety can be guaranteed. 10. Suspended deputy national police chief, Pol Gen Surachate Hakparn, filed a petition today with the chairman of the National Anti-Corruption Commission (NACC), demanding an investigation into Prime Minister Srettha Thavisin’s alleged abuse of authority. Surachate is asking the NACC to investigate the prime minister’s appointment of Pol Gen Torsak Sukvimol as the national police chief last year, his own suspension from the police service by the acting national police chief and the motives behind the investigation into the BNKMaster online gambling platform, as part of which he and some of his close aides have been charged with money laundering. Surachate has also challenged the authority of the police investigation team. He claims that they failed to submit their findings to the NACC within the legally mandated 30 days of receiving a complaint against him and his men, hence their investigation has no standing and they have no authority to conduct the probe. 14. A Portuguese woman yesterday left guests gobsmacked by walking around a Phuket hotel with her boobs out and reportedly refused to settle her accommodation bill. The Phuket Times, yesterday, April 21, issued a warning to accommodation operators in the province to be aware of the 31 year old Portuguese woman Nadiya Serivna Varshawa. “Warning for hotels in Phuket! Beware of this female foreign tourist! #Nadiya She comes back to cause chaos again. She booked a hotel room but could not pay for it. She borrowed money to pay a taxi fare and said she only had a credit card. She walked topless around the hotel and asked everyone she met for money. She also ordered food but could not pay for it. Everybody is in trouble because of her.” The news agency also featured images of Nadiya and her rented room in the post. The foreign woman was strolling topless around the hotel grounds, clad only in a lengthy skirt. Additionally, the woman’s hotel room was found to be untidy, with clothes and accessories strewn across the floor, alongside empty plastic bottles and other litter left scattered about. The foreign woman previously hit the headlines at the beginning of this month for refusing to pay her taxi fare and threatening to stab the driver with a knife. Chalong Police Station officers investigated the crime and discovered that she had a mental illness. While they intended to find and punish her, no action has been taken. Many Thai social media users urged the authorities to intervene before Nadiya caused more trouble. Some criticized authorities for allowing her to stay despite her disruptive behaviour. A Thai Facebook user, Kik Yossawadee, shared that Nadia’s family members wanted to take her home for treatment but she always ran away. Another netizen claimed Nadia tricked her friend into paying for her shopping and stole her friend’s phone, though it was later recovered. As of now, no official department has taken action on the issue. 17. Thailand urged to increase renewable power target beyond 50% A call for an increase in renewable power generation beyond the target of 50% outlined in the Power Development Plan (PDP) has been issued to the government. The PDP is due to be finalised in the second quarter of this year. Full Story: https://aseannow.com/topic/1325631-thailand-urged-to-increase-renewable-power-target-beyond-50/
  18. A call for an increase in renewable power generation beyond the target of 50% outlined in the Power Development Plan (PDP) has been issued to the government. The PDP is due to be finalised in the second quarter of this year. This rise is essential since Thailand has pledged to achieve carbon neutrality, a balance between carbon dioxide emissions and absorption, by 2050. This was stated by Tanachai Bunditvorapoom, chief executive of SET-listed Absolute Clean Energy. “Thailand has plans to reduce carbon dioxide emissions in the power sector, but similar efforts in other sectors are unclear, so the country needs to increase the target in the PDP. That means the power sector needs to try harder to reduce carbon dioxide emissions.” In 2021, Thailand declared at the 26th UN Climate Change Conference in Glasgow its commitment to seriously tackle climate change. The country aims to reach carbon neutrality and set a net-zero target by 2065. Regulated by the Energy Regulatory Commission (ERC), a renewable power generation scheme was initiated. The first phase of the scheme, which involves the development of renewable power projects with a power generation capacity of 5.2 gigawatts, has already taken place. The ERC has plans to auction more projects this year under the second phase, with a capacity of 3.6 GW. Still, the renewable power generated from these two phases may not be enough to reach the goals set in 2021, Tanachai noted. As part of the PDP, authorities propose the development of two nuclear power generation facilities with a combined capacity of 800 megawatts. Nuclear power is seen as a clean energy source with zero emissions. However, support for nuclear power development in Thailand remains uneven and is likely to face strong opposition from locals and non-governmental organisations, Tanachai said. Thailand is also pushing for biomass-fired power plants, which can provide steady electricity, unlike solar and wind energy. These are considered intermittent sources of power due to unpredictable weather patterns. However, biomass power can only partially replace electricity generated by fossil fuels such as gas, Tanachai added. Increasing the renewable power target to more than 50% to ensure Thailand can significantly cut carbon dioxide emissions is under consideration by authorities, but there are challenges, said Sarat Prakobchart, Deputy Director-General of the Energy Policy and Planning Office. The potential for higher electricity bills due to costly renewable power must be taken into account. “Thailand may lose competitiveness if the country totally supports renewable power without considering its budget limitations.” The PDP, which is intended for use from 2024 to 2037, is part of the National Energy Plan (NEP), the country’s blueprint for energy management. The NEP comprises the alternative energy development plan, the energy efficiency plan, the oil plan, and the gas plan. The state-run Electricity Generating Authority of Thailand is promoting renewable energy with a nationwide project for 15 floating solar farms with a combined capacity of 2,750MW. The first floating solar farm is at Sirindhorn Dam in Ubon Ratchathani, with a capacity of 45MW. Operations of this first solar farm commenced in 2021. In related news, to revolutionise its urban landscape, Pattaya is making strides towards becoming a wireless city. Following the removal of overhead power lines along Walking Street, the city is now embarking on a new project to rid South Pattaya Road of unsightly power poles. 23. BANGKOK (NNT) - Thailand's sky watchers had a unique opportunity on Sunday evening (Apr 21) to observe Comet 12P/Pons-Brooks as it made its closest approach to the sun, an event that will not occur again for another 71 years. According to the National Astronomical Research Institute of Thailand (NARIT), the comet was optimally positioned for viewing just after dusk in the western sky until approximately 8 p.m. at a distance of about 116 million kilometers from the Sun. Comet 12P/Pons-Brooks, currently between the constellations Taurus and Aries, can still be observed with the naked eye under dark skies free of light pollution. To the unaided eye, it might appear as a faint, hazy star, less distinct than the others. However, using binoculars can reveal more details about the comet, especially its tail, enhancing the viewing experience. Comet 12P/Pons-Brooks's next close encounter with Earth and the sun is scheduled for 2095. By Krajangwit Johjit Source: NNT 2024-04-22 Get our Daily Newsletter - Click HERE to subscribe

  25. A Thai man died in a tragic motorcycle crash in Chalong shortly after midnight today. The accident, which involved a single vehicle, occurred in front of Ban Chalong School on Chao Fa West Road, a notoriously dangerous intersection. The Chalong Police Station and the Ruamjai Phuket Foundation were alerted of the incident around 12.45am. Upon reaching the scene, they found a Honda Click scooter that had collided with a power pole on the side of the road, along with the lifeless body of 57 year old Thai man Uthai Yadee. Despite the intersection being a hotspot for accidents, there were no active CCTV cameras in the vicinity to provide insights into the events leading up to the crash. Residents reported hearing the crash but didn’t witness the incident. The Chalong Police, based on the available evidence, suspect that Yadee could have misjudged the curve, leading to the tragic accident. The fact that the weather conditions were not alluded to as possible contributing factors, and Yadee’s scooter showed no marks indicating contact with another vehicle, further supports this theory. Photos from the accident scene depict a motorcycle helmet lying on Yadee’s scooter, but it remains unclear if he was wearing it at the time of the accident. As of now, this latest fatality has not been recorded by the Thai Road Safety Foundation (ThaiRSC), and the road fatality tally on ThaiRSC.com remains at 58, reported Phuket News. In related news, a fatal accident involving a Ducati motorbike and a roadside barrier claimed the life of a 29 year old man last week in Kalim, north of Patong on the scenic Phuket coastal road. The unnamed victim, a resident of Moo 7, Mai Khao, suffered catastrophic head trauma in the collision, leading to his untimely demise. The crash was reported to Police Lieutenant Colonel Chayakorn Tangsakul of the Patong Police at around 8.20am, on April 18. On arrival, officers found the distressed scene near the Abzab Restaurant, with the red Ducati motorbike lying next to a concrete roadside barrier. The victim’s body was discovered beside a coconut tree, on the opposite side of the barrier.
