  1. Living 45 km North of Chiang Mai, we have almost daily short cut-outs and over the year at least 5-10 longer ones of a few hours each, depending on the strength of the rainy season and the root system of trees lining the roads. We are all setup for it, with UPS's for all sensitive electronics, emergency lights and a hard-wired 5 kW generator with an automatic transfer switch. We only turn it on if the power is out for more than 30 minutes (fuel is expensive) and it doesn't have to work very hard, PEA are normally fairly quick reparing the damage even at night. There are 2 food processing factories nearby that are dependent on uninterupted power supply, so PEA have become a bit more responsive since they started operating. Occaisionally we still get a whopper of a black-out that lasts more than 12 hours. A few years back we were without power for almost 2 full days, when a truck driver crashed into a road-side electricity pillar, which subsequently dragged down another 5. It is just the way it is where we live, our side of the road, tends to have more power outages than the neighbours on the opposite side of the road. Always has been. Part of the charm of living in Thailand...

Do the people who write these headlines realize what "hotspot" means?

It's obvious they are not native English speakers and it's a bad translation.

I must be missing something. Referring to forest fires as hotspots is common practice, I use it that way on a day-to-day basis. I do admit not being a native speaker and mainly working with government agencies in South-East Asia.

Simple, if you want  to travel on May 1, apply based on old rule.

Exactly, that is what I did, made a TP registration for arrival 29 April. After getting the approval I changed tickets to arrival on May 1 and cancelled the SHA+ hotel. TP is valid for 7 days before and after the registered arrival.

After my application for a COE was approved last year, the quarantine was reduced from 7 days to just one (as well as a change to TP). I simply cancelled the 7 day quarantine booking and made a one night booking with the same hotel. That was accepted and I expect that for the change on May 1, the same applies. The rule change is for arrival from May 1 onwards. In the past reductions in quarantine period have been linked to the date of arrival, not when the registration was made.

  4. I flew from PP to BKK a few weeks back (when no direct flights were available, there are now with Thai Smile I think). No issues, standard arrival with the PCR test and one night in SHA hotel. I will go back early January. There are no quarantine requirements at the moment for fully vaccinated travellers travelling from Thailand to Cambodia, just a PCR test 72 hours before arrival and then a rapid test on arrival. That may change in the coming days.

I applied for the Original format CoE on 24th Oct, received the rejection letter on 26th Oct informing me that I need to use the Thailand Pass site to apply.

It would have removed a huge deal of stress if they had just approved the CoE in the initial application and asked to try the Thailand Pass as well.

Clearly there have been issues with the Thailand Pass - Overlap should have been set at much longer than one week.

Getting the advice to try the Thailand Pass while the COE web-site is still up and running is a bit weird. Maybe a local embassy issue. Here in Phnom Penh they don't have that much to do. Well, instead of nobody waiting for a visa application there were a grand total of 5 people at the embassy, this past Tuesday morning. Since Thailand Pass is no longer done by embassy staff perhaps they can't be bothered with COE anymore. I have heard people getting a very quick approval, for their Thailand Pass application, but you are right that seems to be hit and miss.

We are also flying on 8th.

I applied for CoE and was rejected as all travel from 8th requires Thailand Pass (CoE are not being issued for travel from 8th).

Thus: Thailand Pass ( a complete shambles at the moment ) - Thailand Pass does not require your Visa information - just your basic information and a bookings:

    Documents required:

    1) Passport Copy

    2) Vaccine Certificate

    3) AQ Hotel Booking

    4) Insurance Certificate

Advice: Do not register with a Hotmail account.

The Thailand pass is incredibly buggy - we have had to submit a couple of applications as we received no confirmation or registration e-mail (when registering with hotmail - G-mail / yahoo mail ok).

About applications for COE being refused, that may depend on when (and where) you applied for the COE. I got mine for travel on 13 November. It was approved on 31 October, by the Thai embassy in Cambodia. No new COE applications are accepted from 1 November onwards, but COE applications in progress can still be granted if all necessary information and documents are supplied by 7 November. Approved COEs for travel after 1 November, don't suddenly get cancelled because there is a new system announced. There is no cut-off for COE, just for the date by which a COE must be approved.

  7. I only know that Thai Air used to allow cats as carry-on for domestic flights, while paying extra for the weight of the cat. I did that several times for flights between Krabi and Chiang Mai, several years ago. Some years ago I talked to someone on a Nok Air flight and they had to put their pet in the hold, not with all the other luggage, they have a special compartment for live animals. I am not sure about Air Asia, but what I can find on the Internet shows they do not allow pets in the cabin. If customer service is not available, then perhaps you can ask at the airport when they are checking in for a flight. Not on the day of your flight of course.

  8. As mentioned above, any recent car has a fuel consumption gauge. Based on the information you give you get about 9.5/liter. Whether that is good or not depends on what car you have and your driving style. As for using other fuel or mixed use (gasohol 91/95), what does the carmaker advise? Using the wrong fuel could mean that any engine damage is not covered by the warranty. It is unlikely that using gasohol 91 will result in serious engine trouble within the period you think you will keep the car, as long as you stick to known fuel brands and alternately use 91/95.

Local being person to person, at work, home whatever.

From quarantine being people who have entefed Thailand from wherever and have been quarantined and tested there..

I don't think that is correct. I agree it would make sense, but the numbers reported are broken down as domestic cases (1477), pro-active case finding (288) and imported cases (2). In the OP the 288 cases are referred to as: "were imported from people entering quarantine". So except for the 2 imported cases, the rest are all locally transmitted, domestic cases.

  10. I have had two carry boy canopies and one Sammitr on different trucks, no complaints except for the fitting of the backdoor. I needed to adjust the locking mechanism on all of them after a few years, as things shift. Also recommend getting AC fitted (and sliding partition windows), best to have them against the ceiling, so you don't lose any cargo floor space. I also have avoided buying ones with window wipers, as I have seen several other cars where this stopped working after a few years and haven't been able to find replacement kits.

I have seen no change in fuel consumption. As Yellowtail mentioned, the canopies are installed over the liner, so it looks a bit ugly (unless you have a black or dark grey car) and things shift a bit more than if they would be installed directly onto metal. As mentioned by others, Sammitr is steel, which feels more sturdy. Both are very durable, rust hasn't not really been a problem, perhaps living near the coast increases occurrence of rust, I wouldn't know I live in Chiang Mai and haven't had any rust on a 22 year old Sammitr canopy, although it has lost the back door and most of the paint is gone.

  11. Managed to order one from the Sony webstore as a combo with a TV and got it delivered last Friday. They had even taken the effort to hide the fact there was a PS5 in the delivery, by packing the PS5 box into a bland brown box. Amazing console. Very happy with it, the controller is something special.

Sensible, I should wait really. Nothing spoiling I guess. I'll still try at 11am today though. Good luck ????

    No luck for me today.

Did you or anyone else get an order in? Despite the site not crashing this time, I never saw anything becoming available to (pre) order. Admittedly I only tried the first 5 minutes. Only when checking again a few minutes ago, I saw that both PS5 SKUs are now marked sold-out. Good for those that did manage to squeeze in an order.

Agreed it's horrible. I'll try again tomorrow with low expectations, then I expect would be March / April before another restock.

Have you considered importing one from your home country?

Not considering importing, as stock issues are global. Not a fan of paying over the odds. Add shipping/taxes and that doesn't make much financial sense. I can wait a few months, still have my PS4 pro plugged in, also have a Switch so I am fine for my gaming needs.

  14. According to a message on the Sony Thailand store, the pre-order has been post-poned to 27 January at 11:00. I don't think it will be much different than the first round. It would be better to just make this into a lottery for all those that have expressed interest, instead of another free-for-all franctic refresh attempt.

I will still try to secure an order, but with no expectation getting an actual order in. Honestly, this feels more like trolling on behalve of Sony at the moment.

    There we go again...

  15. Just got the confirmation e-mail from Sony, pre-orders will go live on the online shop https://store.sony.co.th/ on 22 January at 11:00. So in Thailand they are trying to beat the scalpers by restricting it to pre-orders directly from Sony, with one order/account (either the normal PS5 or the digital edition, not both).

    PS5 with blu-ray drive) 16,990

    PS5 Digital edition 13,990

    Dual sense controller 2,390

    Pulse 3D headphone 3,490

  16. On 3BB North of Chiang Mai, with fiber 1Gb package, which currently gives me 210 down and 125 up domestic and 85 down and 65 up to New York (on the notoriously unreliable Ookla speed test, speedof.me gives me 35/15 to New York). That is very variable, so the same test within minutes can give completely didifferent results. International connection is always less and with high demand it throttles down to around 10 Mbps down, but (almost) never as bad as the OP mentions.

I agree it is probably demand in the ASQ place you stay.

  17. In response to Ketyo... Well in a way he already has affected things, because there is now a 2 week period announced in Cambodia where no face-to-face meetings between and with government staff is allowed. This is disrupting training events and meetings, that now all have to be done remotely, instead of in person meetings as was the norm since a few months.

  18. It also is available as a native app on Apple TV, same procedure (more or less) as for Chromecast. You need to login to your 3BB account after getting the app from the app store. There is also an app for iPhone/iPad, which allows casting it to Android TV or Apple TV. Since it is mobile focused (it is called HBO Go afterall) it is HD at best, sometimes less depending on your connection.

Would point out Thailand's population is shrinking.

It's still very easy to live off the land here, but probably not a popular option among the young population.

I never understand the 'knee jerk' too many people posts.

Yes there are too many Africans, Indians, Chinese ........ everywhere else is doing just fine with their population.

Agreed that compared to other countries Thailand is not too crowded, but according to current projections, Thailand's population will reach its peak in 2028 at 70.4 million people. The current 2020 annual population growth rate is 0.25%. It isn't shrinking yet.
