  1. I'm arriving with 190 days left until expiration on my US passport, which is 6 calendar months plus 7 days. By all sources I've checked, the expiration shouldn't be a problem since it is over 6 months remaining upon entry. The Thai consulate website says over 6 months validity required, and IATA website says it is fine, as do other websites. It'll be a visa exempt, 30 day entry and I'm staying only 10 days. Flight from US to BKK through Taipei.

Has anyone had any problems with a passport that close to the cutoff, but on the positive side? I'm just double checking because I'm about to book an expensive, non-refundable hotel stay.

  2. the suspects in the Benghazi attack are freely wandering around

Wow, you managed to slip a "Benghazi" in. Well done.

And what does that mean? You really think the fact that they haven't done jack about it hasn't been noticed? Photos of suspects, suspect interviews by the likes of CNN, names of suspects, and the US government hasn't done anything.

If there'd been any attack in the US where they have video and an inkling of who was involved, there would not have been 1 1/2 years with nothing being done about it. Took them less than a week to flush the Boston bombers out and end the whole thing. What is pretty clear is that as long as this stuff goes on in Middle East, it's basically going to get ignored as is convenient.

  3. This was a very good bargain with little cost to the US. The Taliban are many things, including very badly behaved, misogynist, and deluded monotheists. But they are also Pathan nationalists who want to have a political voice over their domain that is currently being occupied by foreign forces. Any discussions about the future of Afghanistan that has the goal of reduced violence will require the inclusion of the Taliban. Negotiating this prisoner swap was a good deal for all sides.

    ...

"little cost" remains to be seen. They now have incentive to grab Americans, and I mean any Americans anywhere they can. The whole point of not negotiating with terrorists is once the precedent gets set, they then have inventive to keep doing the same.

Like they never had the incentive to do that before.

    rolleyes.gif

Really? Before today, all any potential kidnapper had was some unknown reward. Zero expectation that they could get anything for their hostage. They had to waste resources on the hostage for an indefinite period of time, have some guys guarding them, keep moving them around, and worry that someone will blab and the location of the hostage and they'll wake up one late one night with special forces busting in the door. Of course they'll take any hostages they can get a hold of, but actively going out and trying to take one is a different ball game.

After today, they now have an end game. They can now expect that the US is willing to negotiate and spring their brother or friend, or whoever they might want out. Or if not that, then something else they want done. Or more significantly, that someone else who wants their relative or friend out may now be willing to pay for that hostage so they can do a deal. It's an entirely different situation. High risk with no idea of what they could get before, to high risk, but now maybe they can get someone out who they want out.

Right now, the two glaring things the terrorists are looking at are, this swap was just done, and the suspects in the Benghazi attack are freely wandering around. I actually expect that soon before the election, that second part will get taken care of, but if I were in the Middle East for work or something, I'd be out of there ASAP.

  4. I've been using the 1GB plan for about 20 days now and have used 337MB of it so far.

I've used 7.34GB from my home WiFi and other WiFi connections.

I've been keeping the data connection off and only turning it on when needed for the most part. Although I did need to do a bit of tethering with my computer a couple of times when out and about.

I only ever see the H or H+ signal on my phone - does that mean anything in particular?

But so far so good, although if I didn't have my home WiFi connection I would've burnt through it quickly.

As an aside, on the additional packages from True on this page:

    http://truemoveh.truecorp.co.th/3g/toppings/iplay/entry/654?ln=en

If you signed up for the Unlimited Facebook for example, and had no other data plan, would you need to turn 'mobile data' on on your phone to use the Unlimited Facebook?

If so, how could you stop your phone from using the data for other usages such as checking email in the background etc.?

Also, does anyone know the USD code to turn on international roaming on a pre pay True sim?

    Thanks.

I've wondered about that part as well on the Facebook, Line, Youtube, etc. The mobile data will have to be on, so the activity other than the specific app, would seem to act like any other data request without a plan. Unless they actually will set it up so that everything other than the specific app just doesn't go through. Except then, anyone who wants to do some browsing or email, then wouldn't get it and maybe they'd be willing to pay the going rate.

For the roaming, go to the Truemove H website, and click "International Services" pull down, then roaming. You'll get to here:

    http://truemoveh.truecorp.co.th/international_services/roaming_services/all

There are other links that are helpful in there like finding out the price for services while roaming. The registration is toward the bottom, in the middle.

    http://truemoveh.truecorp.co.th/international_services/roaming_services/entry/646

    USSD Code *112*1#

When I did it, I can't recall how they say that it is activated, but I did it a few times just to be sure. There's some message about services being activated, but there's no way to independently check it, such at the Truemove H website. The account info just doesn't seem to be available for prepaid.

  5. Not sure what the question is here. Theoretically the meter has been running slow for the 3 years of living in the house, meaning some benefit even though it wasn't your doing. If they charged 5,000 baht, that'd be the equivalent of 139 baht/month for the 3 years. Is it running 10% - 15% slow or something more than that? Once the tampering is fixed, there will theoretically be some increase in the monthly bill. That might be the bigger issue.

  6. Tried to send messages on Line today, from UK, all showing not read, so has it now gone down ?

Nope, maybe everyone is ignoring you. Seriously though, I do think it sometimes does not show read for quite a while even though a message is read. I can also read the popup message on my phone (Android) and it does not show as read unless I go to the app. So I can selectively ignore after reading the message, or last one that comes through.

Also, a single message will sometimes seem to get stuck without showing up until another is sent or a sticker. So I think it is best to send two short messages, or a message followed by a sticker as the sticker can't be reviewed in the popup message. I haven't had problems contacting people in Thailand.

  7. Even today, when they released the satellite data, it turns out the airline tried to call the plane twice, which reset the hourly cycle on the satellite pings. So it wasn't just hourly pings, but a few other satellite connections along they way.

Pings would only happen at set times unless the hardware reset. It does bring into question ATM frames and encapsulation. In other words, the call cannot change the ping handshake and space between them. They would just have a longer latency.

Sent from my HUAWEI G510-0251 using Thaivisa Connect Thailand mobile app

Not sure what you're trying to say. If you go through the released log, the system seems to be intelligent enough to do an hourly handshake only after there has been no contact for an hour. As in the timer seems to start after a message, so if there's any communication in between, the timer resets. There a string of communication for the first 2 hours and 40 minutes of the log (takes up 40 pages of the 47 page log) so there's no hour long gap.

Then the first handshake is 3 hours 40 minutes in. Then 3 more, until a call attempt about 45 minutes into the cycle. Then the next handshake is not 15 minutes after the call attempt, but an hour after the call attempt.

  8. Does Beats make earbuds? Using full sized headsets with iphones or ipods makes zero sense.

Yes they do, smaller ear buds that still sound really good. I think most of them come with a built in microphone so they can be used with a phone.

Be very careful with fakes. Look online how to spot the difference. You can also check the serial # on the website to make sure they are genuine. The fakes are ok but after 8 months of minimul use mine started die.

I'm not going to buy any. Just wondering how this makes any sense for Apple.

  9. All three denied the drug belonged to them.

People need to read that carefully before commenting like "they deserve it!"

That's all fine, but what of the sentences from the article:

They said Taylor admitted she had used her backpack to smuggle heroin from Cambodia on one previous occasion.

Police alleged that Taylor and Savarino were arrested at Phnom Penh airport with heroin in their backpacks

  10. All in the other airlines in the region should say a prayer, as MH 370 could have happened to most SE Asian carriers and at most airports in the region (meaning the non-checking of the stolen passport database).

Do you have anything to support the claim about failure to check the stolen passport database for other SE Asian countries? I don't think it was an accident that they left out of there instead of another country. That guy who bought the tickets in Thailand buys tickets for others fairly frequently so he must have known to buy from Malaysia to Europe versus other countries to Europe. Plus there is zero indication that had anything to do with the plane disappearing.

The real issue is the incompetence of the handling of it afterwards. The airline is interwoven with the government and they've been basically along for the ride as the government has withheld significant information along the way. The unidentified radar contact that was going west, which delayed satellite searching in the right areas for a week or so. Time the aircraft was first lost. The sign off message was completely wrong for weeks, which only was known after they released a full transcript. Cargo manifest sat on for a month.

Even today, when they released the satellite data, it turns out the airline tried to call the plane twice, which reset the hourly cycle on the satellite pings. So it wasn't just hourly pings, but a few other satellite connections along they way.

  11. ohh dear what a dumbo i am

i was looking for a faststone w8 app

Dont worry about it. Win8 apps are confusing (and mostly pointless) at the best of times, except possibly on a small device with a touchscreen. But who would ever try to do anything practical on such a device?

You might like to look at Classic Shell which can make Win8 function much more like Win7.

I have an 8 inch Win 8.1 tablet, and the apps aren't even worth it on a small screen. Almost every app has a better normal app or website alternative, and I just live with the accidental clicks on the wrong item or tiny print. The email app will not even do pop email accounts. Though I do have the email app set up and Flipboard set up.

The bigger issue is when there are Android and ios versions of the same app, the Win 8 version almost always sucks.

  12. Why not just buy blended fruit and vege drinks?

Where do they sell them? Also like i said most shops won't blend the correct types. It's always too much of the sweet fruits and hardly any green leafy veggies for example.

It's like say a mango smoothie or a strawberry one with no veggies, carrots etc inside them.

I think your choices are buy or bring a blender, or try to make up for it by focusing on meals with a large percentage of vegetables. The latter is what I try to do as it is much easier to find. You might be able to get someone to blend a drink without sugar or with less fruits, but they really don't focus on non-sweet drinks at the places where I've found stands. They just are not likely to have the ingredients you're looking for. They'll have carrots, but not much leafy greens.

  13. The fix is a reference point and its abolition would have little effect on prices traded during the day. For those who think there is the chance of some big bounce as a result, dream on.

It wasn't just some input on prices, there was at least one identified attempt to move the market. FT article. Requires a login, though a few articles per month can be read for free.

The FCA said Mr Plunkett had manipulated the market by placing, withdrawing and replacing a large sell order for gold bars in an attempt to push down the price in what the trader called a “mini puke”.
As a result, the bank was not obliged to make a £2.3m payment to the customer – who was later compensated – under an option contract and Mr Plunkett boosted his trading book by £1m. He has now been banned from working in the regulated sector and fined £95,600.
  14. Had a conversation over Line today with someone in Thailand about an hour after the OP post. One thing I did notice is my PC version had the conversation and my mobile version didn't show it for maybe a half hour after, even when I opened up the app and sent a message from it. Not sure if that means anything regarding people using the mobile version or was just something on my end.

  15. Kidnapped a decade ago, woman escapes with help from Facebook

LOS ANGELES: -- A woman who was kidnapped a decade ago, sexually assaulted and forced to marry her abductor has escaped after contacting her sister on Facebook, police in southern California said Wednesday.

The Santa Ana Police Department said it is holding Isidro Garcia, 41, on charges connected with the abduction. The victim, who has not been named, was 15 when she was allegedly kidnapped by Garcia, who was her boyfriend at the time.

According to police Garcia initially imprisoned her in a garage then told her that her family had stopped looking for her and that they would be deported if she came forward.

He supplied her with false identification papers and forced her to marry him in 2007. He subjected her to sustained physical, sexual and mental abuse over the years and the two had a child in 2012, according to police.

The victm recently contacted her sister on Facebook "and eventually gained the courage to contact the police," the statement said.

They appear to have mangled the story. All other places say he was the mother's boyfriend.

  16. since all that was stolen were encrypted passwords, it means security was not compromised (unless someone can decrypt those passwords, which is highly improbable)

    http://www.ebayinc.com/in_the_news/story/ebay-inc-ask-ebay-users-change-passwords

Depends what you mean by security. Name, email address, physical address and date of birth is a lot of info to know about people.

The database, which was compromised between late February and early March, included eBay customers’ name, encrypted password, email address, physical address, phone number and date of birth.

  17. The express line does not leave so often, but the city line is only a little longer and leaves in 15 minute intervals. There's an Android app Bangkok ARL that shows when the trains leave and expected arrival. You can select the city line or express line. Express line on the weekends is showing as leaving Phaya Thai on the hour, then at the airport at 19 minutes after the hour. So if you couldn't make the 7AM express train, the next would be 8AM. The city line is showing as leaving 6:32AM, 6:47, 7:02, 7:17, 7:32, 7:47, etc. so plenty of options. The 6:47AM is showing as arriving at 7:13AM, so 26 minutes.

From Makhasan, it is showing 22 minutes, so not much shorter.

  18. Since philionina girls and Thais are world renowned as hoovers you have to accept some resistance from the authorities when you try to bring them into Germany, USA, Australia or the e .u

Many of them or a good percentage will overstay the tourist visa they arrived on if they intend to work in a brothel and send money back to family it has to be addressed by their own Govt as well as the western nation as international criticism mounts up

It gets to the stage where they just can't ignore it anymore....

How is what you posted in any way related to this topic?

Because it's true, a male mate flew on Saturday from NAIA to BKK and 6 girls we're held back (he asked inside at the gate counter) He's a Doctor and was asked if he's going TNT in Thailand (overstay) by the Filipino immigration officer, he was shocked as he's flown to many places and spent 3 years in Canada, all of the stamps are in his attached passport.

It's a good thing they stop these girls and question travellers, how many are here on ED visas working in whatever industry, if they even bother to get an ED visa. I realise the country is poor and there aren't many job prospects other than call centre work, however going off to become a yaya in Hong Kong is a short term solution, the country calls it's overseas workers heroes, I suggest the government should be ashamed that upwards of 10% of the population work abroad.

As for the OP did you buy the ticket or did she she buy the ticket locally ? Call the airline as some have suggested, the RP doesn't do anything first.

True doesn't make it relevant. He's not talking about Thailand, but "some resistance from the authorities when you try to bring them into Germany, USA, Australia or the e .u" And he didn't give any relevant information about a Filipina entering Thailand.

Your post actually gives information that is helpful as it is relevant consideration for the OP, and I note you didn't need to mention Thais, "hoovers", or brothels to get that information across.
