During peak season, these popular destinations suffer from traffic congestion and water shortages, with international airports running out of slots for airlines

Never heard anything so daft.  Tax cars higher, for roads, water and airports improve your infrastructure and get into the 21st century.  I have been to a couple of these resorts recently and they definitely don't appear to be over-touristed, the hotel prices would be increasing and they are not with plenty of availability, a scheme to line the coffers in my opinion or a bureaucrat to justify their position.

  2. Should have chopped his arm also - would have had problems then smoking then!

I am also not the biggest fan of Thai taxi drivers at times but as a smoker can refrain from smoking for an hour or so, I find usually the offer of a small tip the guys will usually pull over for a few mins to get our cravings, half of the time they smoke themselves so are quite happy with the break and gives us a chance to socialise with our Asian brothers!

Obviously we can't / shouldn't become politically active here. But dude this is an English language discussion forum and Thailand just experienced a historically significant national election result. Of course it's OK to discuss that!

Thailand are professing to be a democracy to the wider world, however it does not appear to be democratic with the 250 installed members of parliament that were never elected just allocated in the constitution so any other party would never get a majority.  Freedom of speech is also important in a democracy and the right to protest - that also seems to have been taken away with the repurposing of other laws meant for the monarchy, as soon as the politicians start looking after the government again rather than a clueless military then Thailand can 'move forward'

There is a reason military governments never work out, it doesn't matter how you dress it up to the wider world, they will catch on eventually!

(DISCLAIMER - All opinions in this post are how I think the average Thai citizen may feel not mine - for legal clarity :))

  5. Not just a Thai thing so not sure we can relate it to Thai culture.
I am sure there are many western men that have been taken for a lot more than 5mill by a scheming foreign x-wife, I know I fall into that category ????

Feel sorry for the guy maybe just a little bit too trusting and naive over his relationship status with his girlfriend.

Sounds legally like he hasn't got much of a case, just made a large gift to his GF.

The "We hate Russia and Russians" crowd is now becoming the "We hate Thailand and Thais" crowd.

If you don't like Thailand's Geo-political neutrality - pack up and leave.
Go back to your Western utopias which now have massive energy, food, and inflation problems directly related to attempting to 'punish Russia' with sanctions.

Personally I commend Thailand for their neutral stance.  Stay neutral and maintain trade alliances.  Win-Win.

Thomas Jefferson sums it up, "Peace, commerce, and honest friendship with all nations – entangling alliances with none."

    Amen.

    Such a stupid post.

SCENARIO: China align with Russia and take the actions as their chance to annex Taiwan, the world becomes more involved.  China decide to continue their invasions of South East Asian countries, firstly Philippines and eventually Thailand.

QUESTION: Which way will Thailand vote in the UN resolution in this scenario?

I totally agree ...  what about the teachers and the school principal handling the money ....  just saying as TIT.

Very true, If I was a teacher or principle making 10-15k a month and the signer of an account with over 1 million in it, it would tempt me!

Happened before and will happen again, don't mean to be the bringer of doom and gloom in a sad story, but lets wait for the follow up stories in a few months/years.

    i) Did she make it to university and what course is she studying?
ii) How has the money been distributed between life living and university fees etc
iii) Have the 'trustees' provided transparency on the money that has left the 'donation' bank account
iv) Are the school/trustees taking fees for being a trustee and if so how much %
    v) I know they said no ATM card provided to alleviate everyone's fears - but that means nothing, how many required signatures and who does it take to make a transaction, this fund is already at 1mil and could go upwards of 2mil if people keep on donating, that would be a good reason for me not to go to university!!

Happened so many times before, I am being cynical and if it does turn into a success story I will donate generously to outweigh my current cynicism in this university funding campaign, as an aside there are many more worthy causes to spend a lot of money donating to.

I don't believe there is any scam, but I just hope that every Baht that people send her goes to her and her alone.

Hope is a wonderful thing, but the word 'trustees' and 'I have never seen this much money in my life' do ring alarm bells, I hope she still has the drive to go to university with a million in the bank, and the 'trustees' are trustworthy enough to ensure that it all goes to the intended use.
I am not belittling the young girls situation, but am aware also of how things work, and we may well be donating to a member of the government or police force in the longer term even though the intentions are good.
