I'm an American and my wife is a Thai. She pays all bills and I see where and how she tips. She often gives to the "real" poor and pays 500 Baht per day (Thais lucky to get 350 Baht/day) to laborers she hires for work I can no longer do which is just about anything now at 79. No more bars so that problem has gone away. In a younger foolish period I spent foolishly and enjoyed it foolishly.

My wife gets 36,000 in SS from the US and I give her another 36,000 from my retirement for 72,000 total. She pays for everything...I just eat, sleep, and complain. But, considering the cost of living here, I don't spend another dime and the rest of my Pension get banked/invested every month. However, I do go home and get a new O-A Visa every two years...
I think she got a better deal hanging out with me and working in the US.

If the murdered girl had been my daughter, Mr. Smiley and all the police and judges he has bought off with his offshore money, would not protect him from gentlemen who specialized in their own manner of justice.

I am approaching 79 years of age, my Thai Wife and I take our joy with our children, we don't need Thai killer boat rides, nor do we ride crazy bikes, please someone with an ounce of sense, tell me why we need to lock away B800,000 into a bank account. Don't the Thai HISO skim enough money from every airport, freeway, or other con they dream up get enough money to have to pick on quiet living farangs?

My USA Bank charges $20 per transfer and some politically controlled New York scam bank adds $25 to that for a total of $45 per month. Not cheap but I'm used to it and transfer only takes one day, normally.

At my age 78 (nearing 79) most of my old friends are gone. Still, a bunch of elders around but maintaining contact on a regular basis is more difficult due to my disabilities (very limited walking, wheelchair necessary for malls, hospital visits, etc. My standard reply to the question of "How are you doing"? my standard reply is "Still on top of the grass."

Thus is life in LOL.

I read of hundreds if teen age noisy late night racers, but what happens to confiscated motor cycles? Zero, nada, influential parents get the unpaid for bikes back. Kids have to wait for a day or two to again get on the racing circuit.

Does it count if my bank deposits amount to or exceed $5,000 USD per month but my wife withdraws $4,500 USD for living expenses that same month? It's more or less payback as I used to spend that money on wine; women and song, actually more like Whiskey and women and at my age and physical condition, I couldn't use the dough.

Way back when, retired Airmen and lower ranking Sergeants retirement pay was barely enough to pay their mia-noi and bar bills. When it came time to get the certification letter from the US Embassy all they had to do was lie, as in not tell the truth, about their income. Put the right number on the Embassy form, raise your right hand and swear that the amount is true...bingo, show the letter to immigration and you are good for another 90 days or year.
There is also a form 1199 issued by the DOD that shows monthly salary as well as deductions. Of course, I am reaching the age of being senile so I could be totally wrong.

If you are a US Citizen, then the US Embassy gets involved. Your 15th Cousin, twice removed could get involved if there is any (I'm being fascious)(Incorrect spelling) appreciable money involved regardless of your having a Thai legal marriage. As a US citizen you will have to have a US Embassy issued death certificate for your wife to collect your assets and the Embassy will notify any US relatives. Corrective measures?
1. All property in your wife's name, use a Thai/American lawyer.
2. All life insurance policies make her sole beneficiary.
3. Military benefits, her name only.
(not recommended for marriage to wife of 3 weeks or less)

I deposit $500 to $600 to my Thai bank. It does not stay there as my wife uses it. If I get a statement from Bangkok Bank verifying this, will that satisfy the requirement for a one year visa. I am married to the same Thai wife for over 30 years.

Unlike their American counterparts, Thai girls seem to not enjoy french kissing. Even wife of many years go for a kiss but not a Frenchie. The 'sniffing' seems to be fairly common among Thais women.

I don't like bribery but trust me, immigration officers do not get much in the way of pay and most can barely afford their uniforms. 1,000 baht (a little over $30 US dollars) is a small price to pay for the convenience of getting stamped through. Every time a low level official accepts a bribe, he/she is required to donate to the top brass. Someone has to pay for those luxurious houses and brat's sports cars.

Why do I get the feeling that so many people have so little to do with their time as to barter about 20 baht.

I guess I'm an indoctrinated tipper as I appreciated a tip when I worked as a busboy and later as a bartender. I usually tip 40 to 60 Baht when the bill is over 800 baht. My wife will sometimes leave a "next to nothing" tip but then she will "palm" a tip to the primary waitress.

"My friend" wouldn't happen to be an attractive female, would she? Possibly immigration officers have been told about the problem at the "Grace" hotel? There are a well behaved group of attractive Russian "Tourists" in Pattaya who seem to NOT to be a neusince (can't spell).

Long time US marriage to Thai citizen (US Civil Marriage) and I need corrective advice? Was told by a fellow American that if the American dies at his home, here in Thailand, it is necessary to contact the Thai Police who will take the body to Police Mortician in Bangkok for Autopsy. When autopsy is completed the body can be released to spouse, along with a Death Certificate and this certificate can be presented to US Embassy for numerous copies of legal death certificate for Insurance policies, etc. in my case for a family funeral.
I will double check with the American Embassy but they may insist on a payment as they do nothing for US Citizens for free.

The mystery of exactly how many expats live in Thailand

Don't forget the thousands of expats who have left via the smoke stacks of the Wats or Watts, which ever, the number is large as many of my friends have gone that route, I'll be in the ground of a Mosque, in any case, the body is gone but the spirit remains forever.
