Not a bad little profit 1,300,000 a month less operating expenses.

say 1 million a month profit after expenses. 12 million a year x 4 years + 48 million baht. She should have enough to see her out.

    your calculation is incorrect.
First of all the rent, which is likely to be 200.000 baht a month
The bar ladies do get 30-50% of the turnover in drinks, so lets say 400.000 bath.
Pay the police another 100.000 thb at least
The purchase of the liquor itself 25% , so about 300000 thb.
My guess is she takes home between 200k and 300K a month.
She will have to pay off her new car, her house, her life insurance and so on. 80 K
Ok, so left 150K a month

how long is this gonna take. the only way to save money is to stop now and indeed perhaps restart in a few years, after the market has recovered.

And how will China now sell to economies that you believe they've caused to collapse, with many only having money left for essentials. That in turn will severely damage their own economy, surely.

China have opened up Wuhan region already, and manufacturing capacities will be back to normal within a few weeks. Europe and USA will still be in lockdown, companies as well as countries (like Italy) will go bankrupt, the Europe countries are devided how to help each other and China and Russia already are stepping in to "help". Not long now before they will buy financial unstable companies and banks, and finally take over economies.
Are you not seeing that the countries where the Chinese have a lot of influence, like Vietnam, Hong Kong, Cambodja and even Thailand are not much effected by this "killing" virus ?

What's the point? The numbers of covid19 deaths will be astronomical whether or not a curfew is imposed or not. Plus the numbers given up to now are pathetic and an insult to even the stupidest in society.

This curfew will just squeeze the life out of the people even more. The country is gonna be in a dreadful state when this thing is declared over and borders open, etc again.

If the economy doesn't collapse completely i'll be amazed

Untill now Corona not show the same "astronomical" figures the normal flu did in 2017/2018 (810,000 hospitalizations, and 61,000 deaths).  Of course, media tell different stories, but look at the figures closely and there are about 15.000 deaths solely caused by the effects of the Corona-virus. It are the media that are squeezing all possible news out of this epidemic (making a lot of money), and the politicians are eager to read all this and take unproportional steps like lockdowns, forcing people to handover their freedom completely. Well done media, well done politicians. You destroy the economy of many countries in search of saving some extra lifes, and leaving a trail of bankrupt companies and people without work and a future. Is it all worth that ?

Makro has a wall of spices like the one you see in the first picture. I suggest going there if you've got one near you. Most real Thai home cooking is done with very fresh ingredients so a lot of the stuff you want for cooking is not going to be able to be taken back by plane but there are some dry spices. Actually you can plant a lot of Thai ingredients back in the west depending on your location. I grew chilis up the snowy lands but I had to start them in a greenhouse first then replant them when the weather was tolerable.

my thai wife lived 24 years in Holland, before we decided to live in Chiang Mai.
After every trip to thailand she took back lots of fresh herbs and vegetables, packed in wet newspaper. Always good, but limited life span back in Holland

  5. last friday went to extend my 2 year thai driverlicense.  Need only :
    1. Copy passport
    2. Copy Visa and extension
    3. Health Certificate (any clinic, 100 thb)
    4. Proof of residence certificate (from Immi)
    5. Original 2 year Thai Driverlicense
Went to the desk on 2nd floor, got some papers to fill in, after they checked and got a number (176). Went to a desk to get the color test , they made some notes on the papers and had to wait for about 90 minutes before this number came up for another counter. Payed 555 thb (5 years DL) and sat down again to wait for another 30 minutes before my picture was taken and the new license was made.
Easy as hell, only waiting took long time

From experience, as long as you don't stand behind a service counter enter the kitchen or being seen handling proceeds of the restaurant's money and only sit in front chatting with patrons you're safe...

Also from experience, you are right. completely. You are just doing some chatting. But don't dare to take orders , no cleaning or management, don't give the staff orders. And so on.
Many restaurants in CM are in the same situation. Thai lady owner, faland boyfriend or husband chatting with customers.
    Never had any problems.

You like her? You want to be with her?

    If yes, do it.

She may like you as well, but maybe has financial obligations to a third party but don't want to involve you or not yet.

Up to you to eventually help her financially, and up to you to decide what amount you eventually want to spend on her.

    Good luck with your decision.

By the way I am married 19 years with a lady who occasionally worked in a bar because of a financial problem I helped her solved.

I support this answer. You are still young and have all the time to find out if this is going to work.
I am happily together now already 10 years with a woman of same age. This woman came to my home country with a german man she met in Pattaya (yes....) , and was married for 16 years. Things didn't work out at the end and she got divorced , after a while she met me (still in my home country) and we felt in love. We now live already 2 years, still happy, in Thailand.
Things can work out strangly. You will never know.

Woman, not only Thai, are looking for a good relation and off course some financial security.
If you like her, and she likes you, you should support her a little bit, so the relation will keep alive. Nothing wrong with that. The girl you met makes long days as a waitress/hostess and what she receives is not much, normally only a percentage of what customers drink. Of course there is a financial reason she moved from Isaan to the tourist centre. Girls who work in this industry are mostly not proud of what they do, but they do not all have a choice. If you can make her life a little bit easier, that should make you happy also. And hopefully you can give her a good future, together.

    Good luck

Hello - everyone. I made the mistake of having a vendor ship me a 1000 baht item DHL and now DHL is holding it. Going forward I will use USPS.

They are asking me to "

    1.    Authorize DHL process on your behalf (service fee THB 1,500) , Please provide copy of passport first page ,

copy visa page and copy immigration page .

    2.   Visit Thai customs office and register by yourself, please advise schedule

It appears I need to 'register' before even having the ability to pay the tax. I read through this thread and can't see any info on this registration process with Thai customs. Can someone enlighten me or point me in a direction of what this process is? Can I just go down to Thai customs and quickly register?

Thanks in advance for any insight.

If you need it, then go ahaed. And reside in it that DHL has f*cked you. And whenever and where ever possible, DHL, but also UPS will scr*w you.

If you not really need it, phone them, explain the situation and make a pay settlement like 500 thb. Could be that they not agree driectly, could be that they will never agree. Also thell them that they can send it back in that case or destroy it.
If there is missing documentation that the seller should have taken care of AND the DHL servicepoint at the senders side should have checked and therefore should have reject the shipment, point this out to them also. In that case why should you suffer from their mistake.

By the way "register at customs" is not easy, this is done for the reason you need a import license for your goods.

    Good luck

I see a Crown almost every day in BKK...bet there's a rearseat for sale in BKK somewhere.

    You wiill loose this bet.

The Crown I recently purchased is very rare. It is a 1968 Toyota Crown Hardtop.
Furthermore the rear seat I bought still has his original stitching patern, very rare again to find that.
50 years old so parts I find have a long history. And modifications made (like re-upholstery) are very common for these cars.
    I am looking for originality.

According to this thread probably DHL did never declare the real freight cost and thus the customs are using their own calculation.

I think that is the case with this also. although they know the shipping cost.
They are referring to the attached document.
Yes , it is an official document, but according to the translation (by Google) it will only be used in case shipping costs are not clear or have to be urgent calculated for quotation. Furthermore it never mentions anything about weight-volume calculation.

    Freight zone.pdf

  11. recently I bought on Yahoo Auctions in Japan a secondhand rear seat of a Toyota Crown. I payed 1800 thb for it. I asked DHL to ship it to Chiang Mai.
Shipping cost € 474,00 (approx. 17500 thb) for this, due to the fact this rear seat is large. Now DHL is telling me that I have to pay 17000 thb for import duty + VAT

They gave the following reason :
"Clearance team DHL informed me that shipment value 5240 THB because customs request clearance team to increase value 200 THB per kg. (26.2 KG actual weight) . And for freight charge it is a customs regulation to calculate freight zone charge per kg. (freight zone charge is not a real freight charge that you pay to courier or shipper but it is a freight zone charge per kg that shipment import to Thailand according to customs regulation. Customs will use the highest weight to calculate freight zone (In this case, customs use volume weight to calculate 92.5 kg x 590 THB per kg.)"

This looks really really much to much import duties. According to the website Customs.go.th Import duties are calculated based on value of the goods CIF.

    http://en.customs.go.th/cont_strc_simple.php?lang=en&left_menu=menu_customs_valuation&current_id=14223132414a505f4c
    so 1800 + 16500 thb is 18300 thb.
The weight of the goods is 26.2 kilograms.
Weight to calculate freight zone 26.2 kg x 590 THB per kg = 15458 thb . but DHL uses 92.5 kg x 590 thb !!!

    IS THAT CORRECT ?

remember, the actual goods CIF only cost me 18300 thb, now dhl charge me import duty + VAT of 17000 thb....... 93 % extra.....

I feel this is not fair and they are ripping me off.

I really don't know if there is any difference between a Western woman and a Thai woman asking this question. Based on experience, I'd say the Thai woman will prove to be less expensive in the long run.

How unbelievable true. Off course women in the west (and in Thailand) marry sometimes out of love for their partner, but the first question will always be (for any woman), why do I find the man attractive ? It is not different in both world.
Economical issues always play a big role in this.

    LTS ?

    also people from MTS, Frits.

If you are referring to me, I indeed did "only" MTS, with all very good results (6 times 9). But I was not interested in the HTS or university as there you learn only theoretical stuff. Started working with an engineering office as a simple drawer at Technécon, after 1 year I was an engineering/constructor already. All calculations I had to make I programmed into my PC (was back in 1986, just the start of the personal computer).

Worked at Estec, Esmil, Bukon. Did a lot of courses in Electrical, Pneumatics, Hydraulics and Steam. Developed myself during the time I worked in technical companies. All courses were payed by these companies.

After I while became salesengineer for 6 years at Econosto, worked after

that at Ubel and Oranjeberg. Both in the CCOD (Chemical, Energy and Offshore Departments). Again learned a lot.

Then took over a small company in construction of safety devices and closures and owned this till 2010. Unfortunally due to economical crisis and a (fighting) divorce, I had to gave up this. After that I took up programming again and doing this till today and onwards.
This is a nice job, have a few customers in Holland that keep me going, but in my spare time I am looking for something else to do. Just bought myself a Toyota Crown model ms64, 1972 and restoring this now. But still I have time left... so came up with this idea after talking to the same young guys that help me sometimes with my car. They all enjoy this work very much. They learn something from me but I even learn more from them, what their attidute is towards the Thai society (very critical), what their dreams are, what they would like to achive in the future.

From a business perspective I am just wondering how will you find your trainees? What will you offer that will make Thai staff join up and stay long enough?

    Interesting question.

Actually I found some young people already. To be exact 3. They come from a mix marriage, so between a farang and a thai woman. 2 of them are not actually the biological children from the farang. They speak excellent english.

They go to an international school and when finished they want to find a job in a technical function.

They do not have the intellectual power to go on and study at a university, but also not like the attitute of the bosses at thai companies. Fact is that young thai people are discriminated in all ways possible. Doing the hardest jobs, for very low wages, no labourcontract for certain period, no working clothes, no training in working safe. And so on, and so on. Those are a couple of reasons they do not want to start at a thai company without any experience. They get bullied around.  With some training and experience they will make a much better chance to get a job where they are handled with respect, is reasonable safe, and prospect of a good financial future.

Jack of all trades, master of none.

As I was teached on an excellent techical school (long time ago) : the workforce does not consist of people who can invent stuff, just people who are able to repair it.

For the kind of maintenance, repairs and small constructing work we will offer, I will not need engineers with a degree, just motivated people with technical insight

Of course it can be done. Plenty of other foreigners running a company in Thailand. Go through a lawyer for the set up and some guidance what you vsn or cannot do. My guess is you can teach workers how to do something but not be a foreman/supervisor on construction site. That needs to be a Thai. You will need 4 employees per foreigner with WP, but that could also be someone on your books who does accounting, driving etc. Many ways how to achieve that.

    thanks
