  1. Agree with experience on the thread.

I signed up for a day package of roaming access with AIS for 32 baht but had to switch off my internet connection as per Mutt Daeng - it's telling you to switch wifi off and to register using the sim card that will be associated with the account. After registration you should be able to use the app via wifi . (haven't check the wifi bit yet)

My original passport number was rejected and my current passport number accepted. That makes sense & perhaps using the pink card. SCB staff do take care to update the bank's document records for new passports as I recall, they are very good at that, aren't they?

The new site looks powerful. I will get the bank to help me with facial recognition. I saw them doing that for a customer last time I was in a queue. It looks very convenient & useful.

The thought of walking round with access to the amount that must be at a bank for immigration requirements is a downside.

I wonder whether it might be better to keep a the lump sum required for visa renewal in another account outside reach of the SCB Easy ap, in another bank or keep the Easy ap phone at home.

  2. This may need a new thread

It concerns new insurance requirements for Non O-A (as opposed to the Non - O visa discussed above).

My insurance company has contacted me concerning renewal of my existing policy (covering 400,000 inpatient and 40,000 outpatient with 200,000 baht deductible per time per treatment) with the suggestion that I switch to the new $100,000 insurance requirement ubonjoe mentions.

I can not find any guidance on the Thai Immigration website about when the new levels come into effect - is there any?

ubonjoe says above that some have changed it to the new $100,000 insurance requirement for a Non-OA visa. Does anyone know what Lak Si requires to extend Non O-A permission to stay?

    Thanks v much

    Many thanks

  3. I believe if you hire a car in the UK the hire company requires the home address shown on your licence to agree with the address your credit card has registered as your home. Do you know if that is right?

I am a UK passport holder living here for 5 years & expecting to be here another 5.

My UK driving licence is now out of sync with the home address for my UK bank account now. I do have a Thai driving licence and credit card registered to the same address.

Is it easy to hire for a UK passport holder to hire a car in the UK using a Thai licence & Thai credit card?

It would be better to use a UK card, has anyone got any advice on hiring a car when UK docs are out of sync?

I have avoided moving my bank address from the UK to Thailand to keep life simple. Is it worth doing? I suppose I ought to register my UK bank and UK driving licence to my home here in Thailand. Is that right?

Much appreciate advice from previous experience.

    Thanks

  4. How did you get an appointment? Can you book in advance?

Last  year, they rejected a bank letter issued in line with bank passbook from the previous day after I'd waited for my turn & told me to get it all done again. (although I gather letters should be valid for 7 days)

So I went to the bank closest that opened earliest the next day which was a bike ride away as the SCB was closed at CW) & then went to queue & got it done in 3 hours.

I am planning on going tomorrow, the desk told me to turn up to get an appointment later in the day to do their bank certificate on the day if they apply that rule again.

  5. I can't read that article.

A relation of mine would like to visit Bangkok at the end of March 2021.

What is the position likely to be? Is it best to say 100% unknown

At the moment is entry impossible or impractical. I said I though you'd need a good reason, current covid test, right insurance & 2 weeks stay in state quarantine. Is that right enough?

    Many thanks

BTW There are many great covid tests being developed including 10 minute saliva based one using a gadget like a pregnancy tester (i.e. could be sent anywhere), swabs taking needing a machine that takes 30 minutes, serology tests and many others but how 40 million visitors pa might be tested boggles the mind unless the internal testing regimes here are vamped right up. One company has mini machines being trialled in nursing homes & for like, schools or boarding schools.

  6. Has anyone go experience of registering a Thai address with their UK high street bank? Were there any issues? For example would the functionality of on line banking change or there be an issue in having replacement bank cards sent to Thailand when they are due? Or is it without a hitch?

I have been resident in Thailand for a couple of years but have maintained a UK home address with a family member. My main bank account is with Nat West and registered at my UK address. My tax affairs are up to date, correct and declared on the basis of a Thai residence & address, with no infringements claiming ISA contributions claimed or that sort of thing.

I am not sure what I would do if access to on line banking was prevented because of a security issue or something I am not aware of. Are there any pitfalls to be wary of?

Many thanks for your help in advance

  7. Siam Commercial Bank is no longer in the basement of the Government Complex at CW.

Siam Commercial Bank has a branch open 5 minutes by bike away from 08.30 next door to the Chulaborn Hospital at street level of Chulabhorn Graduate Institute, 906 Kamphaeng Phet 6 Rd, Talat Bang Khen, Lak Si, Bangkok 10210.

SCB has a branch at Big C, that the IO staff recommend but it only opens at 10.30. I could not find the opening times of the SCB at 99/37-40, Moo 4, Chaeng Watthana Road, Thung Song Hong, Khet Lak Si, Bangkok, 10210.

I encountered the following surprises today in the attempt to extend permission to stay an OA Retirement visa:

3 new forms that were no problem - Acknowledgement of Penalties for a Visa Overstay, Acknowledgement of Terms and Conditions for Permit of Temporary Stay (STM 2) and a Statement of guarantee by someone swearing an oath to guarantee the application.

I thought that I would have to find someone to swear an oath to guarantee the application but it turns out, and I went through this with the IO, that YOU can swear your own oath. In the gap to state relationship the swearer has with teh applicant I put "self".

The IO required that my bank pass book be updated on the date of my application (1 July) and suggested that I pay a transaction out to have a transaction to update. She then realised that the bank certificate would have to be re-done as it confirmed the balance before the transaction.

An answer may be to pay out 100 baht & deposit 100 baht but I did what she requested. She also required statements for 12 months rather than the 3 months my branch had given me with a bank certification that could not be used. In future I will take 12 months statements & do the bank certification at 08.30 before going to CW.

I had Health Insurance cover needed with LMG Insurance as spoken about on this forum. I asked LMG to start the insurance a few days early but they advised starting from the date of extension (7  July) base don their experience. My permit to stay without health insurance cover to 7 July so I did not expect a problem.

However the IO could not issue an extension starting in the period of cover on 7 July before cover was effective.  They asked me to return on 7 July. I pointed out that the 7th was a holiday so they said return on 8th July not phased by the Overstay.

I asked about a new set of statements for 12 months and bank certificate. The IO wasn't as interested in the statements and said a bank certificate is valid for 7 days (though not for the IO who said the Certificate I got yesterday had to match an updated pass book). They were trying to be helpful but how honesty do we know that we won't get colds or something so my stuff will be overdue on the 8th.

Neither did they seem to realise that the 7 days life of a bank certificate dated 1 July would not cover the 8th.

I'll get a third certificate & statements on the 8th unless I can get the Health Insurance start date moved forward to do it on Friday 3rd.

Otherwise, not crowded, got out at 11.30 after arriving back from the bank at 09.30.

Admit I only used Bangkok Bank on 17th but believe all the banks were open.  Believe bank letter can be early but passbook must be updated on day of application.

    Thanks, for your answer,

I could try an update in a machine outside the branch if it is closed. They didn't accept a slip on the day that tallied with letter the bank letter day before as teh bank book as already up to date. I think in the end I got the new letter & had a transaction on the same day by putting the second bank letter fee going through the account to so it would have something to update.

Timing the queue appointment this year will be trickier with a longer trip to a nearby bank that may not open till mid morning may but if that is the requirement I suppose other people will have jumped through the same hoop.

  9. Does anyone know whether the SCB bank at the Government Complex under IO is open?

I am due to do my extension of stay application. The IO would not accept a bank certificate dated the day before my application and balance confirmation slip last year. It was handy to go downstairs to get one issued on the day. Someone reported the branch was closed on their run last month.

The next closest branches seem to be in Central Plaza, Big C & somewhere on Chaeng Wattana Road. Has anyone done the same drama this year & have a tip for the next most convenient SCB branch if CW is still closed?

    Many thanks for your help

  10. Thanks for your post.

My trek to CW is due at the end of June to extend my stay on an OA Retirement visa. What sort of extension was yours?

I am getting ready to buy health insurance as close to the application date as possible. I understood it was required and used to set an end date for permission to extend. Good news if the requirement for it has fallen away, has it or was your experience luck, do you think?

The closure of SCB is a blow. They had me obtain a bank confirmation letter on the day of my application to supplement the one showing the same balance, apart from the second fee deducted for the letter, obtained a day before.  I suppose it would be feasible to do between getting a ticket & being called in.

  11. How can you tell whether an insurance policy has been registered with the IO Health Insurance database? Can we look at the database to see what companies are on the record, for instance?

I don't have insurance and need to extend my stay in 7 July. So I was thinking of buying it, I wonder whether they would set it up for effect from a date I could plan to make my visa application on like 1 July.

On reentry the arrival card asks for VISA #. Sort of strange when you do not have a visa. You have permission of stay based on whatever. The "visa number" is your reentry permit number.

    This is my experience too.

An IO pointed my re-entry permit number out as the reference required when I asked him.

38.55 to 1GBP... it just keeps on plummeting. How long until we hit 35 / 30?

All I can say is I just hope the Tory leadership election result can restore some confidence in the GBP. It will after all be some mark of progress. Result due on 22nd July.

Rick, my guess is that the recent 5% drop (measured at my bank from 39.5 to 37.5) happened when the market took note of Johnson's chance of becoming leader and a further fall may follow as the prospect of a non deal Brexit rises. I'll hazard an answer to your question, its gloomy :

35 in the summer recess as Boris takes control, and perhaps

30 by end of September when Parliament is back in turmoil until terms are agreed or not,

then sanity, or the effect of the balance of trade in its new guise, will bring the rate back over the next year

Perhaps more knowledgeable people can comment.

Just seen this, even gloomier, sorry, it looks like 32 Bhat to GBP by Dec 2022.
