  1. Why so much joy for getting a visa? Don't understand. Thai people can go to many other countries without a visa. Why subject yourselves to the harresment of the American Embassy staff. Why do you have to study and prepare yourselves like taking an exam.

We were never subjected to "harresment" [sic] at the Embassy. As for joy and study/preparation... if you had a partner with whom you wanted to share such a big part of your life I think you'd understand.

  2. I second Ovenman and Peace Blondie... free transit pass and easy to get through Immigration to the train... nice ride to Narita City... cobblestone streets, little shops, temple... all worth grabbing yourself by the cohones and going for it! On the other hand if you stayed up all night getting ready for your trip and you're burnt out by the time you make Narita, the Day/Shower Rooms are a welcome respite, leaving you refreshed for the onward journey.

  3. I took my 5 Papillons with me to Samui on Bangkok Air as cargo (BKK-HKT-BKK) for a very reasonable charge. Was told the dogs had to be sedated, and when questioned at both offices, I replied in the affirmative ;-) ;-) . They traveled in their "underseat" Pet Taxi crates with no problem. This was Songkran 2005.

  4. Baht rises to strongest level in decade

The Thai baht has appreciated to 34.38-34.39 to the US dollar

I still don't understand the difference between this rate and rate quoted by xe dot com

"XE.com's Currency Update Service writes: THB Thailand Baht 31.7498599384/USD"

...something about onshore/offshore? Can someone enlighten me?

btw, according to MarketWatch dot com today:

BULLETIN >> British pound touches 26-year high against U.S. dollar: $2.0146

  5. The only thing we need to think about is the upstairs central courtyard, this gets full exposure to the sun and will require some sort of shading, I expect the addition of plants and palms will reduce it but at midday it is an extremely hot area.

When I first looked at those government plans for this house, that was my first thought.. that the open courtyard would often be practically unusable, especially with the sun beating down on it, or during the rainy season.

So sorry to hear about the contractor problems Khun Andy... it seemed things were moving along so well. Sounds like you're back on track though, and look forward to seeing some pics. Good luck!

  6. The hardrive in my Apple PowerBook G4 crashed two weeks ago. I took it to the Apple Repair Center at Rama 3 and they told me they could not recover the data. B U T, the tech at the Apple Center at Thonglor J Avenue retrieved all my data, stored it on their disk. After Rama 3 replaced my H D under warranty, Thonglor restored everything on my laptop exactly as it was before the crash for THB 1600. It was a lot of running around, but I feel very lucky. You don't have an Apple do you? I'm investing in an external drive for backup as soon as I get back from Songkran.

  7. All the members reporting blocks are using nearly the same IP, last digit varying by 2 only (same sub domain) - all True and all static corporate IPs. Members on True not showing it are on a different sub-domain. Seems the ISP (True) is messing around.
Thanks tywais. Now google.co.th A_N_D cnn.com are blocked for me using True HiSpeed.
  8. Congrats! and glad to hear another success story. I was aghast myself when my Thai bf spent two minutes at the window, never had to show bank book, tabien baan, land deed, invitation letters, air tickets, pictures documenting our relationship, or air tickets and hotel reservation printouts. His letter from work and my Certificate of Residency/Passport were all he needed for a ten year visa. Thank Buddha we were prepared with everything we thought we might need, however. We leave early Christmas morning for 3 weeks in NJ/NYC/Hawaii and the time of his/our lives!

  9. I'm asking everyone if they have ever seen a light-weight synthetic buddha lantern for use outside in the garden. You know that material like styrofoam (but a bit more dense?) I want to take it out of country to a friend, so a stone or concrete type is out of the question because of the weight. Anyone know if something like this is available in Bangkok environs?

  10. A former Dell/Windows XP user, I bought my first Apple - a PowerBook G4 - in Singapore just after I moved here. Saved on the price (lower than copperwired and Pantip,) and the 5% tax refund at Changi helped too. As I remember the savings nearly covered the return ticket BKK-SIN. The staff at the Apple Store in Wheelock Place was very knowledgable and eager to help; they were excellent sales professionals and communicators, and there were plenty of them.

  11. Face it, in this post-9/11 era, about the only way a Thai can get into the West is if they are going on business, showing documentation which ties them to their contacts in the West, have a huge bank account (100K isn't going to cut it), own significant assets here (including a house & business). and have shown other exit/entry stamps in their passports from other trips outside Thailand (such stamps from even non-western countries help, I believe).

I disagree. In my partner's case at the American Embassy, his relationship with me (living in Thailand on a retirement visa) and his letter from work were enough to prove his ties to Thailand and secure him a 10 year multi-entry US Tourist Visa. While he had documentation of his "huge bank account," Isaan land deed, entry/exit stamps and everything else we thought might help (see this thread) the CO asked about none of it. We feel incredibly fortunate. I feel for those who are not.

  12. it has only been recently that they added video support for Mac OSX, prior to that it wasn't any more useful than MSM or Yahoo (which still don't have video on the OSX platform)

Yahoo Messenger does have video for OS X, however, no audio.

I waited forever for Skype Video for Mac. There's no comparison to any other chat/video/audio program. Skype quality is far superior imho.

  13. Update: He got a ten year multi-entry! When the passport was returned by EMS Thursday (interview was a Monday) it had two Visas in it. The first, for one year, was boldly stamped "Cancelled - without prejudice." The next page had the ten-year-multi. We had expected to receive it Wednesday... perhaps the change from one to ten incurred the delay, and the ten was dated the day after the one.

  14. I've been doing some extensive online research the past three days, working with multiple pages open simultaneously, and am totally frustrated with the time outs and server failures. This problem coupled with the slow access to sites outside of Thailand (World Wide Web??????) make for True Lies. I subscribed to 1 Mb down/512 up and I'm lucky to get a third of what I'm paying for.
