How much of it was used to combine with your income to reach 800k baht? That is the important amount.l

It might be best to keep the 700k in the bank from the day you applied for the extension.

Half of the money in the bank you used with your annual income to reach 800k baht.

The monthly deposits were between roughly 39k and 43k. My bank balance ranged from about 612,000 -- 780,00 during the year.

Am I right in assuming, if I keep the 700k in the bank for 3 months, and then don't go below 400k for the rest of the length of extension, and deposit 65k every month, I should be good to switch to income only next year?

If you used the combination of income and funds in the bank the funds only need to be in the bank for 3 months after the day you applied and then at least half of it until you apply for the next extension using the income option.

I assume you will be able to show at least a year of months 65k baht transfer from abroad when you apply for your next extension.

    Thanks UbonJoe,

How much do I need to keep in for the next 3 months? I've got about 700k in now.

And I assume by half, you mean I need to keep 400k in until my next renewal. Is that accurate?

  3. US citizen, Phuket immigration.

I just renewed my extension of stay, using the combo method for my non-O (retirement), but I'd like to switch to income only.

I'm a bit confused as to what I have to do this coming year. I know I must deposit 65k every month from overseas. But is there a minimum balance requirement for this coming year?

Is there a minimum balance requirement for the next year?

    TIA ????

PS: I want to put this money to work, so I'd rather not park the 800k, if I can avoid it.

And the taxi mafia continues unabated.  Police are gushing over civilians doing some good.  How about getting your guys to do their job and shut down the mafia.

354 baht from Phuket Town to Patong right now, on Grab. It's 15 kilometers. About $11. The same taxi ride in Seattle would be $25-$30 (USD), I think.

I'm guessing the prices would be different if you flag a taxi down on the street in Patong. But if you know about the apps, the prices have gotten considerably better.

  5. As far as I understand, Phuket immigration will do the monthly transfer method, but only combo. You must keep 400,000 in the bank at all times, but can meet the remainder of the requirement with monthly transfers.

No straight income 65k transfer method allowed. So, it may also depend on which office you use.

Someone correct me if I'm wrong. I'd be happy to unlock those funds.

  6. I just checked on Grab, from Phuket Town to Patong Beach (9.32 kilometers) is 367 baht. This is at about 4 PM. There's another setting on Grab that offers cheaper trips, but I've never gotten anyone to pick me up with it. Prices are lower when it's not a peak time -- under 300, a lot of the time for this same trip.

Things have improved a lot in the past few months, on Grab. I no longer find taxi prices a big problem in Phuket.

InDriver and Bolt here, too. You can beat Grab prices by quite a bit, if you like. Frankly, I don't mind paying a fair price.

But if you're wandering around on the street and ask a taxi driver, yeah. Chances are good they'll try to double the price.

When i pay by credit card usually refund is much quicker maybe 1-2 weeks usually nearer 1

I had them refuse to refund to a credit card, and only offer store credit. I didn't use the store credit soon enough and it expired. I complained, and got it back, but it was a lot of hassle.

Thailand may have an issue of greater dimensions….lets wait for Dr Yongs opinion about that in 4 months.

I'm not saying Sinovac is good. But that study, as far as I can tell, is measuring antibody levels only. There are other aspects of protection from vaccines.

Imagine if this happened a century or two ago when genetics, molecular biology, immunology, epidemiology and microbiology were either non-existent or in their infancy. It would have eradicated most of the planet's population and most of us wouldn't be here as a result of our ancestral lineage having been wiped out. This is a scary scourge.

100 years ago, there were maybe 1/4 the number of people on earth. Less population density. A lot less mobility. People weren't flying across world like they do now.

I'm not one of these "the virus only kills .02%"  people, but even without vaccinations (which didn't start to hit their stride yet), it wouldn't have eradicated the Earth's population. Not even close.

  11. I've been thinking about this a bit. It's too early to tell if Omicron is more or less deadly than Delta. I've seen intelligent arguments for both cases by people that know a lot more than I do. SA demographics skew young, and there were lots of Delta infections there, so these are confounding factors. We'll know a lot more in a few weeks.

It would be nice to know when it will hit Thailand the hardest, so I can time my booster for maximum protection ????

That's assuming a third shot's effectiveness wanes over time. Throw into the mix that they may tweak vaccines against Omicron at a later point, and it might be better to wait a bit.

I'll probably get a booster around the new year. Other than that, I don't think about it much. Life goes on.

  12. Make sure these emails don't go to spam.

I haven't been able to successfully register, but for those who have, I suggest you take a simple step to make sure you get the emails n the future.

"Whitelist" the email address, or domain.

This tells your email service to not put any emails from this particular address or domain, in the spam folder. The procedure varies for different email providers. You can search for "Whitelist hotmail" or whomever.

    For Gmail.

    • Open an email from the address, and click the 3 little dots above the subject line
    • Select "Filter Messages like these"
    • Click "Create filter"
    • Select "Never send it to spam"
    • Click "Create filter"

You can also click the little star next to the email to mark it as important.

Good! It's about time the lousy cabs here had competition! When I lived in Thailand the thing I hated the worst was taking taxis. They were constantly trying to rip you off in a variety of ways, especially in the tourist areas like Nana and Soi Cowboy.

Uber had been discriminated against for awhile and now they've made it totally legal. I say it's about time!

It's a much more dependable and cost effective service.

Uber won't be coming. They've left the area. Whether I live, Grab is currently the same taxi drivers you see on the street anyway. Let's hope it expands to be more Uber+like -- especially with the pricing.

Cool. They're going to find many "new cases" ("85% of new infections being asymptomatic").

Perfect timing for the all the "reopen" campaigns.

Of course, only a few will ask this question : how come ? Phuket has a very high vaccination rate... and has even started the third dose ! ("66,383 people in Phuket had received their third-dose ‘booster’ shot").

Several reasons. If you'll note, many of the new cases are asymptomatic. There are relatively few deaths in Phuket, from covid. Why? Because many people are vaccinated.

As more people are vaccinated, the percentage of people who are vaccinated and get covid will go up. But most will not have severe symptoms, and many won't even know they have it.

Another reason is that they weren't exactly accurate with the number of people in Phuket, in order to reach the 70% vaccinated milestone. And they also moved the goalposts with that one. Suddenly, 'vaccinated' meant one shot.

Like many places in Thailand, there are shadow populations that don't show up in many official tabulations. These include the 'sea gypsies' in Rawai.

These populations tend to live in close quarters, and also tend to avoid dealing with the government, if they can.

I'm not sure if it's still the case, but a Thai friend of mine initially couldn't get a vaccine, because she didn't have a house book in Phuket. She eventually got her boss to claim she lived with her, so she could claim residency and get a shot.

In other words, if you don't live here officially, you're not counted in the population, and lower population makes it easier to hit 70%.

I just got my second shot, and I will say, it was very well organized and they were moving people through very efficiently. I was in the vaccination center for less than 1 hour, including the 30 minute waiting period.

Do not stay in a country without insurance if you do not have the money to pay. If you can´t afford insurance. Stay home!

My insurance back home was $500/month with a $5,000 deductible, and they only paid 80% after that. Much cheaper here.

Staying home was not a good option.
