  1. Hi everyone ????

I currently live in Hua Hin but recently visited Surat Thani (the main city - not Koh Samui, etc) with my girlfriend and I love it there. I was planning to move to either Chiang Mai or Phuket in May but now I'm seriously considering Surat Thani instead. I've been searching for houses to rent in the 100,000 to 150,000 baht per month range, in ST, but nothing comes up. I was hoping there would be some luxury homes available with a great view but so far, have found only a few condos. Yes, I know that amount of money per month is going to attract flames by people who think I'm trolling. I tried searching Thai FB groups and searching Thai sites in google and nothing comes up. So I'm posting here, in the hopes that someone who lives in/has lived in Surat Thani can give some recommendations.

    1. Do you know of any site that lists luxury homes for rent in Surat Thani (on the mainland, not the islands)?
    2. If no such site exists, can you recommend any areas/neighborhoods in Surat Thani (on the mainland, not the islands) that are known to have luxury homes? That way I'll just go through the area myself looking for rental signs.

"Brand consciousness" is the magic word which counts in Thailand and the whole of Asia. What you have and not how you are is relevant, of course with some exceptions.

Aside from Rolex, which brands do you suggest? I'm interested in brands that are recognized by Thai people. Specifically Middle to Upper Class Thais (but not talking about legit Hi-So's).

Rolex has 36mm models for men (datejust/daydate/explorer1) which should fit a smaller wrist just well.

Awesome, thank you. I'll look for the 36mm models.

I think you are talking about a 'status' watch so forget the Seiko and casio recommendations and go for Longines, Patek Philippe or Breitling. I personally like Tag Heuer as I too have slim wrists and they aren't too bulky. I often get complimented by Thai's who definitely recognise the brand and know it's expensive (although it wasn't too expensive at about 80k THB)

Yes, a "status" watch is what I'm interested in. Thank you, I'll look at those brands, exactly what I wanted to know.

Am I correct in thinking this is about the bling of a watch and not the timekeeping ability? There's more accuracy in a 2000 baht mobile phone clock than there will ever be in any mechanical device.

I think the OP wants watch to impress people not tell them the time. The watch could probably be broken as long as it looks good. I honestly can't see how a watch can make someone attractive unless it was part of the whole package. Wearing a t shirt, shorts and thongs with a Tissot/Seiko/Rolex wouldn't attract the attention of many people I imagine. Dressing up a-la-a James Bond style and it might add some benefit.

About the status mostly, not about the bling. Definitely needs to be good quality as well.

    80% status symbol

    19% completes an outfit

1% to tell time (easier looking at my wrist than pulling out my cellphone)

And no worries. I don't dress in t-shirts, shorts, and flip flops.

  4. Hey hey,

I'm interested in buying a watch and would like to hear your ideas. No, this is not a troll post in case anyone is wondering.

Which brands are sought-after in Thailand, and meet the following criteria:

    • Price range: 32,000 - 160,000 baht
    • Good for small/thin wrists
    • Classy styling
    • Good for business or business casual wear (so no G shocks, etc)
    • A brand that is recognizable to Thais as something that is valuable

Obviously Rolex is known the world-over, but they are too bulky for my wrists. So, what brands do you suggest I look at?

  5. I'm interested in learning more about Thai social class and structure. I.e. How to tell where individual Thai's fit in, where I fit in, what's expected of me when I meet a Thai of higher/lower social rank, what I should expect of them, how to give the proper amount of respect to higher/lower Thais without losing face myself, etc.

Do you know of any books or other resources where I can learn about this in-depth?

  6. Update: Went to Promenada again today and went to OTain (around the corner from the 2nd floor immigration office). Wow, so much easier. Gave them all the documents including that receipt I mentioned before. The passport pictures I had were not the right size so they took new ones right there. Easy peasy 1-2-3sy. Expedited Residency Certificate 1000 baht, passport pictures 200 baht. Going back tomorrow to pick up the certificate.

Not it is not one. A certificate of residency is done on a sheet of A4 paper and has a photo your attached.

There is a separate office for doing them at the Promenada immigration office (500 baht for same day service).

Are they going to send me a certificate? I'm pretty confused, hah.

Today I went to Promenada immigration. I went to window 7 and asked for a residency certificate. The lady told me residency certificates are handled upstairs, on floor 2. So then I went upstairs, took a number, and spoke to the officer when my number was called. I had already filled out the "Application For Residence Certificate In Thailand" so I handed it to her and said I would like a Certificate of Residency. Gave her my passport and gave her a copy of my condo lease contract. I had to wait for about 30 minutes while she checked something in the computer. She said I also needed copies of passport pages, passport pictures, etc. I told her I have those and began to hand them to her but she didn't take them. So I sat there a bit more as she continued checking the computer (I think to see if my landlord had verified my residence), then she handed me my passport back with the receipt stapled in it and said, "Ok, there you go".

In any case, what do I do now to get the Residence Certificate?

  8. I went to Chiang Mai immigration to get a certificate of residency (I'm getting this in order to get a Thai drivers license).

At the end of the process the immigration officer signed and stamped a piece of paper then stapled it inside my passport. At the top of the paper it says "Receipt of Notification". It looks just like the image I've attached below.

Is this the actual residency certificate? If not, how do I get the certificate?

I'm in the USA and want to get the 6 month METV. I understand that I need to leave Thailand before 60 days but can get a 30 day extension on that (for a total of 90 days). I need to show the LA consulate proof of my flight leaving Thailand. Here's my question:

Should I schedule the outbound flight to leave Thailand before the 60 days is up, or is it ok to schedule it before the 90 days is up?

I'm getting an METV again and I'm scheduling my flight back for 8 months. You don't need to schedule it back 60 or 90 days, book it when you intend to fly out.

    Thanks guys, I appreciate it.

I just called the LA consulate (should have done this before, obviously, haha). They said the flight out of thailand date is up to me, so can be anytime within the 6 months.
