  1. When are you going to leave that area like your smart neighbors did? :)

Patong is an unsafe place at best and that area has been a thief's paradise.

Glad you and yours are safe.

:D Remind me again how many places there are to find good somtam in Tennessee? :D

There are literally Thai people everywhere! No kidding!!

  3. Reading through this thread there is a common theme. Reap what you sow and the poor treatment of tourists and ex-pats adds up. Tough economic times certainly but I think it goes deeper than that. I am reminded of some investment guru on CNBC one day when asked about Thailand. He said Thailand has been an emerging market for a long time. But they can't emerge! Just keep shooting themselves in the foot. Very true. They need to join the real world.

  4. Just to be clear, I was planning a trip just this evening and on the Thai site the non-stop economy was just over 46,000 Baht. Eva air wanted just over 45,000. Not much of a difference for the non-stop.

I'm traveling with a toddler so I too am trying to minimize the take offs and landings.

  5. They said we need to apply for an IMMIGRANT visa. Since we legally file our joint taxes overseas and I got hubby a u.s. Tax ID number - which he could probably work there with- they ASUUME we want to stay - in that- jump the process and queue to a permanent status. And they said we don’t have enough ties to Thailand, even though we own 3 Houses, Land, Car, Bikes and a very good Thai Business, but not al0t 0f $inc0me$ compared t0 the vast wage difference between the USA and Thailand.

    s0 , n0....

g0ing t0 vietnam and bali instead...

I'm sorry and I am also completely baffled by this. My wife, actually girlfriend at the time, got a 10 year multi-entry the first try. I had not gotten my retirement visa yet, and only rented a condo. My wife had a job here but we owned no property. How in the world with all you own did they not see any reason for you to return? Maybe things have tightened up over the last 2 years since we got her visa. The advice on getting an immigrant visa is lame. If you get one and then don't stay, they revoke the visa and you can go to the back of the line in future. If you are even going to be out of the US for a time you need a re-entry permit with an immigrant visa. I would suggest shopping an immigration lawer. Good luck.

  6. Thanks for the info. Sounds like any dealing with govt. agencies here or abroad. A jumbled mess. The links to the company sites should prove helpful. I'll renew my US license while there and use a family members address just in case.

  7. You can get a international lic. issued in thailand and they will rent. I did it last year. You must show thai lic and international permit.

Are you a US citizen? Is there a difference between ID license and ID permit? This sounds confusing.

  8. Has anybody rented a car in the US with a Thai driving License?? I have the newer Thai license with both English and Thai writing. Would you still require an International driving permit? My US license is long expired.

    Any experience appreciated.

  9. Am now in the process of booking my air tickets to the U.S. where pops and I spend the first weekend of NFL in Vegas, betting on the games and overall, whooping it up.

BTW-we do not wear jerseys, but we do drink a lot...

I'd like to gauge some of your guy's insights into that first weekend. What do you like? We don't have spreads yet, but let me know if you see anything:

    THU, SEP 10

    Tennessee at Pittsburgh-TN &pts?

    SUN, SEP 13

    Miami at Atlanta-ATL a monster?

    Denver at Cincinnati-DNV downfall?

    Minnesota at Cleveland-Clv at home?

    Jacksonville at Indianapolis-?

Detroit at New Orleans-NO to crush?

    Dallas at Tampa Bay-OMR ?opinion?

    Philadelphia at Carolina-Home dog?

Kansas City at Baltimore-EZ Bal score?

    NY Jets at Houston-Tossup?

Washington at NY Giants-Gmen start slowly..

San Francisco at Arizona-FG game last 2 years

St. Louis at Seattle-Rams better this year?

    Chicago at Green Bay-Under?

    MON, SEP 14

Buffalo at New England-NE+7 take the pts?

San Diego at Oakland-RAIDERS WIN ! RAIDERS WIN !

It's much too early for me to have any strong opinions about any of these games, Huggy. We don't even know what the starting lineups will look like. I need to at least read the results of training camps, and check for injuries, etc., before I'll be ready to predict anything more than the Patriots home opener victory over the Bills! :)

Yeah, what he said except for Denver and KC getting slammed. Then if the Raiders get out of the gate quick against SD we might have a chance to win this weak division!!!

  10. I made my living in the medical profession and I see a Chiropractor regularly. Much as the author above I am young beyond my years unlike the many I know who had back surgery and are now collecting disability. Trained "medical professionals" are trained to do medical procedures,ie; surgery. The training received by Chiroprators, Accupunturists or other "NEW AGE WHACKOS" is no less rigorous but it's focus lies beyond surgery and drugs.

Without knowing what your problem is, it is difficult to make a suggestion. MRI's are a fine diagnostic tool but the treatment afterward is up to you. Like others here I can say I'm happy with Dr. Cracknell and I would add a Thai Therapist trained in NY who works out of Phuket Town. He is very busy so make an appointment. 076-2171345 open mon-sat

As ?? Very obtuse statement that one.

You sound a little obtuse. If you want my resume PM me. I was offering my opinion as everybody else on this thread did without providing their life story. What is about web chat that brings out the *** in people?

  11. How about doing the boring and staid old school medical method and have a cat scan and maybe even a MRI done on the affected area and then have a specialist give you an opinion on what is the cause of the pain. From there you can make an informed decision on the best cause of action, be it physiotherapy based rehabilitation or surgery. I have experience with serious lower back injury and believe me if you want to see how things can go "pear shaped" with quacks and chiros and New Age wackos poking and prodding about the spinal area then take a visit to a spinal injuries unit and talk with the staff there about their opinions of untrained charlatans playing around with your spine. I know all this will probably set the ding dongs off but I am just and old fashioned guy who tends to place his trust in trained medical professionals. But as they say "up to you".

My brother followed this kind of advice 40 years ago when he was a high school basketball star and tore ligaments in his knee.

I decided not to have surgery done when i had a similar injury (my brother had the surgery)

Today, my brother gets cortisone shots every year and is going for a plastic knee next year as he can barely walk.

I am training for my 4th consecutive Laguna Marathon coming up next month.

    Up to you!

As someone said: surgeons like to do surgery.

  12. If you are a millionaire and 26, congrats, you can do whatever you want. But don't brush aside some of the advice given here. I've been here about 3 years.

Things that are true and old timers will warn you about:

Do NOT think bar girl and romance belong in the same sentence. Would you perfer a hooker in Oz over being alone?

Do NOT start or invest in a business in Thailand. Most ex-pats who have a business work very hard for very little or they

flat out fail. Thais too for that matter.

Vacationing in a place and living in it are two different things. Very different.

Relax. have a long holiday here before commiting to ANYTHING.

  13. Enough is enough!! These people in red make me want to 'puke'. They have IQ's that can be counted on their fingers. When one backs a man who gives them 200 baht and promises them the ability to get government loans, THAT THEY MUST REPAY, you know they qualify for 'DIM-WIT' status. When there was controversy in the USA about the 2000 and 2004 general election, you DID NOT see the people who lost gathering in Washington D.C. and doing what these people in red are doing. Thailand is years off of being a Democratically run country, as greed and power are the only driving factors. Just think how selfish and stupid the previous PM was: 76 billion baht and not one baht DONATED to the good of the country: i.e. donations to schools; hosptials; environment; ad infinitum........if he had done this with no outside urging, he would still be PM. His days are numbered, but he doesn't get it still. Why don't his followers ever question how a policeman can become on of the richest men in the country........it sure wasn't by hard work......other elements were at work...don't kid yourself! I think it is now OK for the police and military to step in with VERY HEAVY HANDS!!!! To the reds: when you play with fire you will get burned....tum dii, die dii, tum chua, dii chua!!!!!

I don't bother to post much in these emotionally charged political threads. But this is about as clear a summary of the current situation I have seen. Here, here!! Well done. :D:o:D:D

I've been here just under 3 years. They have had 5 PM's Time to grow the <deleted> up.

  14. Can't really see how any gas can be introduced through an outdoor compressor. The is no air connection between outdoor compressor and indoor unit. It's more likely gas would be introduced through a room vent.

Sounds like urban legend to me. Carrying a cannister of anesthesia gas around would be cumbersome if you could buy it at all. Probably expensive which would increase the overhead of the operation. And why aren't the thieves affected when they enter? Gas masks? Again more to carry around and an increase in overhead. Sounds unlikely. Has there ever been an arrest of anyone using gas to burglarize a house?

  15. Forget GM. The papers are full of other factories ans businesses closing.

Someone once asked on a thread long ago if Thailand would avoid the worldwide recession. I thought no then and no now. Try as they might to pretend they are not part of planet earth, the Thais are still here. Jumping out of windows is not the Thai style, however. If you have everything and lose it then maybe. When you have a little, it isn't worth the walk up to the window.

  16. When I read these stories it terrifies me. I have never used drugs, but the thought of a false positive, and subsequently being sent to the woefully overcrowded Phuket Provincial Prison for who knows how long scares the hel_l out of me. From where I am from, this blatant violation of personal liberty would be unconscionable.

I used drugs in the past but that is a long time ago, but i would be worried about a false positive too. Or about corrupt police trying to get you to pay up or frame you. Its just that i don't trust the police in Thailand that much.

No reason to trust them. As to the false positives; I don't do drugs but was in the medical profession for years. You may find this interesting.

Amphetamines - Substances or Conditions which can cause false positives

Ephedrine, pseudoephedrine, propylephedrine, phenylephrine, or desoxyephedrine

(Nyquil, Contact, Sudafed, Allerest, Tavist-D, Dimetapp, etc)

Phenegan-D, Robitussin Cold and Flu, Vicks Nyquil

Over-the-counter diet aids with phenylpropanolamine (Dexatrim, Accutrim)

Over-the-counter nasal sprays (Vicks inhaler, Afrin)

Asthma medications (Marax, Bronkaid tablets, Primatine Tablets)

Prescription medications (Amfepramone, Cathne, Etafediabe, Morazone, phendimetrazine, phenmetrazine, benzphetamine, fenfluramine, dexfenfluramine, dexdenfluramine,Redux, mephentermine, Mesocarb, methoxyphenamine, phentermine, amineptine, Pholedrine, hydroymethamphetamine, Dexedrine, amifepramone, clobenzorex, fenproyorex, mefenorex, fenelylline, Didrex, dextroamphetamine, methphenidate, Ritalin, pemoline, Cylert, selegiline, Deprenyl, Eldepryl, Famprofazone) Kidney infection, kidney disease, Liver disease, diabetes

There are a number of other conditions and meds that cause false positives for THC, opium etc; But with the first class testing facilities here and the professionalism of the police, I see no reason to worry. :o

  17. doing business in this country is crazy...if you don't have people trying to scam

you constantly, the police will gladly relieve you of your money if the opportunity exists.

    buyer beware x 1000

Not only that, but every murder that occurs here, the police list "a business dispute" as motive. Is there ever a dispute not settled by murder in this country??

  18. Just curious about a new housing project in Chalong. It's about 1 KM north of the Wat Chalong turn off on Chao Fa west. It has a very grand gated entrance.

Seems an odd time to be starting a major project. Anybody know anything about it?

  19. well kiddies, wave two is coming, (wave 3 is the commercial real estate collpase that is not included in the chart) and this wave will be longer in duration.......prepare accordingly.....and yes LOS will feel the pain as well

naam, how is the old prostate nowadays?

Just something to think about for what it's worth. My sister in the US has been in the mortgage business for years. She is now very busy doing re-financing as the rates have dropped so low. Many of these "re-sets" may never happen as people are locking in low rates now. Re-sets are always linked to something too. T-bill, libor or whatever. With rates so low, an interest rate adjustment may be very small.

  20. What type of OTC pain killers can I get at the pharmacies in Phuket?

must treat the source of the pain or else all the pain killers in the world won't help you out.

Well said. Treat the cause not the symptom. If you have muscular issues, Norgesic is OK. It's a mix of aspirin and a muscle relaxant. Very cheap and at every pharmacy.

  21. OK, Allright. Thailand has foreign currency reserves. So what?

I am 1) NOT an economist and 2) In that class of wishful thinkers as I convert my dollars to Thai Baht to live. But the U.S. Has a large foreign currency reserve. See here http://www.imf.org/external/np/sta/ir/usa/eng/curusa.htm#I

They also have a large national debt. I hear Thailand will run an account defecit this year. So they have currency. And they have obligations. Someone tell me why that makes them financially sound. :o

quite obviously "nomen est omen" applies to you Mylord as you harbour the delusion that the U.S. has large foreign currency reserves. fact is that in comparison to Thailand and in relation to Gross National Product the U.S. reserves are tiny. but whatever, nobody has claimed that Thailand is financially sound.

Of course! That's why I chose the name. It's my Buddhist background. This is all a delusion, including anyone thinking they can predict economic activity. But doesn't a country's currency reflect the strength of their economy and not their foreign currency reserves? Or is it just a matter of trade? Supply and demand?
