The funny thing is..............Wasn't America founded by folks sick of paying taxes?
That's the sick irony!!!
Actually I'd say it's even worse now, as post coffee-dumping, there was some sort of representation (... no taxation without representation).... who represent's the taxpayer's now?
I understand your point, but if one has to pay taxes, I'd rather it went toward providing healthcare and quality education than bailing out ignorant homebuyers, delusional investors, and fiduciary criminals.
Here here!!!! I fully agree. But the rich protect the rich. Money=power at home and abroad.(see Thai politics)
Interesting reports on the tele now regarding this whole mess. More and more are coming into the camp of a major worldwide screw-up that will fundamentally change the financial markets. Interesting times. I think it's time for hard assets. Home and some land. As my wife pointed out, her family of 9 survived on much less as do so many in the world. We will survive with our assets.

'No market for old men,' TCW investment strategist warns in gloomy forecast
That would include most of us I think.
I fled some time ago because a 400 point up followed by a 400 point down in 24 hours just doesn't make sense to me. And how many times over the last 6 months have seen those kind of swings? I just couldn't take it anymore. I'm stuck in low interest cash instruments but now I'm hearing even those may not be safe. Thai banks have no deposit protection. So where in the world, and in what currency, are the wise ones putting their money? I throw up my hands!! (and breakfast ) What is there to do???

May I give a shout out and thank you to MaximumSecurity for not jumping in here with his pitch.
I thought for sure he'd be in on this thread.
Thanks for the free plug. HuggyBear. Its always good to have our name mentioned, even at times of preventable tragedies like this. But we are no longer interested in sharing security information on ThaiVisa forums because of the insipid, ill-mannered attitudes of people like you and SirBurr.
We find it fascinating that you didn't want a company who guarantees their clients' safety to share their knowledge with the forum. Why is that?
How is it that you "guarantee" my security? If I am wounded do you unwound me? Or maybe you are like the protection rackets. Someone hurts me, you send out some thugs to break legs. That may be worth paying for. I'll just keep my weapons close and guarantee at least that I won't go down alone.

Despite my earlier comment on the police, I like this new General. He has done nothing but kick a$$ and take names since arriving. Isn't afraid that someone might lose face. Calls them out publicly. Think I'll invite this guy for dinner!

I flew that route in PE and it's no big deal. A mechanical recline seat and what I thought to be awful service.
Try EVA Deluxe or similar.

Investigators were hard at work trying to track him down because the incident could have a bad effect on tourist confidence, the officer was quoted as saying.
Well at least they have their priorities right! People almost murdered in their home but we wouldn't want the sale of t-shirts to suffer.
My personal confidence in the police couldn't be any worse. Keep a machete by the bed and axes, hammers, spears and the like all over the house. That's your only real protection.

I have 111,000 kms on the thing and the handling is starting to suck so I think I need them. I got online and looked for the parts. They are expensive!! Still, the labor shouldn't amount to much.

I needed to have the shocks replaced on my 2001 Honda CRV. Took it to the dealership here in Phuket. 17,000 Baht!!! Seems like a lot. But then I haven't had any service done here before so I don't know if I was the victim of 2 tier pricing or what.
What do you think??

If it makes you feel any better, my CAT wireless has sucked the last week too. On, off etc; Maybe something with the feed in and out of Thailand??

So how did the games stream over NFL Gamepass over the weekend? Was it smooth as their demo is?
Please, anyone who has NFL Gamepass tell us what the quality was like and what kind of connection you have.
Thanks
PS I'm watching Dev vs. Oak live right now (Tuesday). They played both the Sun night game and the Mon night game. Go ASTRO. Last year, TrueVisions would show all 4 games but now it appears they are only showing the 1st and 2nd games on Sundays but ASTRO is picking up the slack.
But I need to know about NFL Gamepass before I buy!
With which company are you watching Astro??

So, let;s see. The world sees the photos, street riots, one dead, the government house occupied. State of emergency!!!!
Countless countries warn their citizens about travel to Thailand. Then in an instant, the PM is out for cooking. I'm going to get some e-mails from back home on this.

Having had the same injuries to the same knee as Mr. Brady, all I can say is good luck. He'll have the best treatment money can buy but it will never be the same. You mind starts to drift to your knee when you are moving wondering if it will hold as you recall that terrible pain. We will see next year.
Yeah sure. Calling Mr Culpepper not a bad idea.
One of the ESPN crack staff had Detroit winning their division this year. Sure didn't look that way today!
Favre looks comfy in NY. With Buffalo's big win today the AFC east looks wide open.
Cowboys are a fantasy dream team. I love to hate them too but they do look good.
What's up in San Diego? Raiders and the Broncos playing for 1st place tomorrow. Go Raiders!!!

Just a quick note to those on Phuket or those that have access to Astro vision Super Sports. They had been advertising American football all week and delivered this morning I recently moved from a house with UBC @2500 B a month to one with Phuket cable @ 300 B a month. This cable actually has more sports, more movies and I still get BBC and CNN. Who knew???

I just read on a different forum that an American was beaten by about ten Thais near the bridge at the north end of Phuket when he stopped to assist a motorcyclist who had crashed.
Anybody hear of this? Is there truth to this rumour?
I have heard nothing but I have heard loads of related rumours about this and that, Brits supposedly being targeted, we're all in danger, etc etc and I reckon it's high time folks got a grip and stopped quoting rumours. Or have we all become so Thai like through living here!
Yeah it was me and it was 15 of them. I gave them all a good whopping while shouting USA,USA!! Course I was the one who hit the guy originally and then backed over him when I went back to help. People can be so touchy!!!
Stand down everyone
You be bad and I gonna tell all your new neighbors.
Most of my neighbors are Brits or Europeans. Not one has been assaulted this week.

Soccer would be interesting if they got rid of the goalies and the players were only allowed to shoot from ten yards out or more and, oh yeah, naked women with really big boobs as referees would help too.
I suggest that we start a grass roots movement to make Huggy the International Commissioner of Soccer!!
I made the mistake once (only once) while in a drunken state at a bar full of Euros that soccer would only be interesting if they got rid of the goalies. Seriously, I nearly got a beating from the group, I raised quite the roucus.
C'mon now, Huggy. You don't expect us to believe that European soccer fans would actually get violent, do you?
I think after watching a bunch of candyass crybabies run up and down the field for two hours, flinging themselves on the ground as though attacked by a lion, drinking the whole time during another thrilling nil-nil match................most of us would probably get violent.
My thoughts exactly! Especially the lion thing. I would add a rule that hockey has about "diving". Anybody faking a trip or injury gets penalized. I suggest a good beating!!

Sad times.
Just ask yourself if this were your own country and the goverment which was in power was saturated with corruption and was'nt prepared to bring an ex leader to justice even though he had ripped off millions of tax payers money. Which side of the fence would you be on?
I'd ask myself if I contributed to the corruption, or ever spoke out against it.
Corruption in government would be a lot less if it isn't endemic all the way up from grassroots. No hope of finding moral people for government as long as corruption is mai-pen-rai'ed in every household and institution in the country.
A country gets the government it deserves. If the whole culture is accepting of corruption at every level, and contributes to it, no good crying when those kids that grew up with it get into power.
Same as America. Only with Thailand, the rest of the world won't have to suffer for the crass stupidity of the electorate.
May as well add my humble opinion. I agree with the above and I'm a Yank. The political process sux. The endless ads of BS and twisted truth that go with each election drives me nuts. And don't forget the electoral college. That cost Gore the presidency in 2000. Not exactly majority rule.
In the Yahoo news blurb this AM, posted here earlier,
The alliance and their sympathizers — monarchists, the military and the urban elite — complain that Western-style democracy with one-man, one-vote gives too much weight to Thailand's rural majority, who protesters say are susceptible to vote buying that breeds corruption. They have proposed a system under which most lawmakers would be appointed rather than elected.
I gotta agree. What's so great about a democracy that buys the uninformed vote to gain power. Ahh well, I'm just a guest here.

Sorry about your situation. 60 is so young. I lost my mom last month after an extended illness and I too was a long time nurse. I knew there was nothing I could do and I have a wife and a baby here. Still, to see the family one more time together would have been nice. Mom wouldn't have known the difference and maybe your dad won't either. But you might. I didn't go but maybe I should have. It's a tough situation.

Believe they will provide extension up to the expiration date; and believe place the full amount of time in your new passport.
That would be great Thanks
-
I am due to renew my retirement visa next week. All set with the embassy letter etc;. I just noticed that my passport will expire before the visa. Is this a problem? Anybody have this happen to them? Since the time it would take to get a new passport will be well after my current visa expires, what should I do?

From the CNBC website in part.
Markets are presently undergoing a major reconfiguration as investors continue to adjust to signs that the European economy has hit the wall, squeezed by a combination of surging energy prices and tight monetary conditions, overlaid with a credit crunch for good measure," said Darren Gibbs, a senior economist at Deutsche Bank.
That had led the market to price in rate cuts for the euro zone, and policy easing in Japan, Australia and New Zealand for good measure.
"Predictions of a recovery in the dollar are now looking good," added Gibbs, noting the dollar index looked to have broken out of a seven-year downtrend.
The dollar index which measures it against a basket of currencies was up at five-month highs of 76.047, having climbed from 73.42 in just a week.
Hope so!!
Hey, maybe currency trading is linked to the olympic medal count.

I wasn't surprised by this game at all. China's team is pretty hobbled by Yao Ming's injuries and they don't have any decent point guards to contend with the U.S. superstars. Look if you have Kobe Bryant and Lebron on one team it's pretty much time for the opposing team to pack it up and go home. The team this year is lightyears ahead over the Athens 2004 B and C level NBA talent. It's actually almost comparable to the 1992 dream team. If Shaq was in his prime and on the team it WOULD be better than the 1992 dream team.
Still, China was pretty scrappy in the open. Their plan wasn't a bad one..put Yao in to draw defenders and then post up 3's all night. The problem is after the first half they stopped sinking those 3 pointers and were just whiffing. That was pretty much the major flaw of that plan.
I don't think any of the European teams will be a serious contender. Maybe Spain..but I kind of doubt it. The U.S. has fielded the equivalent of a basketball weapon of mass destruction this time around.
ESPN had the best quote on China. 1.3 billion people and not a point gaurd among them.

They (USA) literally ran away with the game... outran and outshot the Chinese team...
At one point late in the game, the broadcasters showed a graphic saying the USA had a 12-2 lead over the Chinese in steals...
It certainly wasn't perfect play, but the USA guys actually looked like a TEAM...instead of just a bunch of superstars playing as individuals... That was kind of heartening...after some past years...
Despite some miscues, there was some great ball handling to be seen.... making me remember why basketball is an American sport at heart... Some of those plays...I found myself saying... HOW'd he do THAT????
PS - Speaking as a white guy former basketball player, were there any white guys who made it into the game on the USA side???
All us white guys are playing hockey in the winter! As such I haven't watched much NBA in recent years. I must say these guys are amazing! Maybe I should watch more NBA. Speed, power and athleticism. Did anybody get a count on the number of slam dunks the US threw down? Geez!

OK, message received. Money + Thailand = DANGER!!! Unlike my rock solid investments in the US with Bear Sterns, Indy Mac, Fannie and Freddie, Enron, World Com etc; Fortunately I avoided all those disasters in the US and will avoid one here as it is a small sum to expand an already existing business with a decent cash flow. Also written in the deal was my wife becoming 1/3 partner in the business. This just gets better, huh? Like I said, a small sum equal to 2% of my assets which is the sum total of money I have invested in Thailand. Live dangerously. At least wish me luck

The US is working on a MEGA PLAN to restore confidence and turn around the financial crisis and it seems it will work. Will cost hundreds of Billions of $'s but if not, it will cost a lot more.
Oh great. The Democrats, the party of no ideas, and the Republicans, the party of bad ideas, are working together. The only thing worse than either of them, is when these a$$8oles work together. I predict the end of the world by next Friday.
