  1. We will be moving soon from Patong, where we have UBC, to a house in Chalong with cable. Can anyone tell me what's on this service? I am told it has some Astro vision from Malaysia, Thai TV and some western movie and news channels. But I can't get in the house until next month to check. I would really like to have American Football starting in September and some movies and news. I'm partial to CNN and CNBC. Any help is appreciated.

  2. Covering a huge short position would cause a sudden rise, not a sudden fall.

You are correct Lanna :o Pak usually stumbles upon some good stuff, but this time he apparently read an article by a grossly misinformed journalist! Sem and a few others did indeed have to cover some very large short positions, but that covering is what caused the rise to $147/bbl, not the recent drop back to the low $120's. Watch for oil to test the $122/bbl support over the coming weeks, if it falls below that support for a couple of trading sessions then $100/bbl oil could be with us very soon!

It looks as though oil has indeed breeched the $122/bbl support! Look for the price to drop steadily over the next 30 days towards the $108/bbl support level, if $108/bbl gets taken out then we will see sub $100/bbl oil sometime in September. As oil drops so too will gold, and the U.S. dollar will rise vs. the Euro,Yen and Pound. I have attempted to express what is likely to occur on a number of different threads here on TV, it is still not too late to short oil and gold and go long the dollar :D

Buy the ETF "DUG" Oil short fund. Got in a couple of weeks ago and just increased my position today. $100 a barrel is possible soon. Then run!! This is a trade not a long term position.

  3. My mom passed away yesterday. You won't find that out in any newspaper or on TV. She wasn't famous, but she was a mom and that makes her a superstar.

I've been thinking a lot about how she took care of me and my sisters and sacrificed plenty for her family. She was a working mom but never failed to come home and put a big dinner on the table. Holidays were always an incredible feast of food and goodies. We weren,t rich but I never remember feeling neglected or deprived .

When I look at my wife now and her tireless devotion to our daughter, I think there is something special about being a mom that even we loving fathers will never be able to match. So in memory of my mom, I would like to say a big thanks to moms everywhere. You have no idea how much you mean to your kids.

  4. For a lot of guys, they have no interest in kite flying and sex makes their hand sore. But anyway... :o

Congratulations on the effort. It's about quality of life and not how long you live. Whatever you do start slow and work your way up. Don't be to concerned if you are winded while jogging now, slow down and walk. You'll build stamina. This is assuming that you're not on the verge of a cardiac arrest now. As they say, check with your doctor before starting any excercise program.

For me. I have been doing some sort of martial art since the 70's. At 52 I don't pretend to compete with the young toughies now but the training is fun and great for your cardio, strength and coordination. Just get a heavy bag and go some rounds. Start slow, build stamina and lengthen your rounds. It's a nice way to get some exercise without thinking you are exercising. Just beating something is so good for the mind. :D Biking and walking are great ways to exercise too. Pick something you will enjoy and it becomes easy.

    Choke dii!!!

  5. just wanted to let everyone know, i know of two ways to watch NFL just like you were back in the US (although different hours obviously). if you have a laptop or computer you can order the NFL Game Pass through yahoo sports (not cheap, but worth it in my opinion) and watch it on your computer - if your computer has an s-video and you also have a tv with an s-video, you can connect your computer and tv and watch NFL on the tv (big screen if you have one or shell out for it).

also, you can set up a sling box somewhere in the US and watch US tv through your laptop (the s-video will apply as well) - i do not know anything about setting up a slingbox, but i know it works if you have somewhere to set it up in the US (parents' house, friends house, ect)

go birds! the return of DMAC #5 and the eagles back to nfc east supremacy!! anyone in cha-am or hua hin?

Has anyone actually tried the Yahoo service? I think the internet speed in Thailand is too slow for streaming video.

I too would love to catch some college ball if anybody has any ideas.

BTW. Will we be getting the games on UBC/True this year? Anybody?

  6. Tough times indeed for the US economy. It is still the largest economy in the world and will be for some time to come. I believe a recent article stated that China would overtake the US by 2025 or 2030 and they have a lot more people.

Trying to find positives, I look at both the presidential candidates and see that they are talking balancing the budget. I think not only politicians but the general public are starting to realize that is a good idea. We'll see. That will strengthen the dollar and hopefully reverse the skyrocketing price of commodities. The fed may be forced to raise rates sometime in the next few months to prop the dollar or coordinate with the European banks to allow the dollar to gain some relative strength. That seems unlikely now but as things spiral down in Europe, might just happen. Germany and Spain are not happy about the last rate increase.

Another positive I see is that the US has already cut it's driving and gasoline use. Everybody with an opinion is lining up to help form a new energy policy that will reduce the need for imported oil. In the long run a good thing. We should have started that when the gas lines formed in the 1970's. Just takes a push sometime. House prices may once again become affordable and financial institutions will be monitored more closely. I couldn't believe my ears when people on CNBC were saying enough of this hands off business stuff, we need some regulation.

Just trying to find some positives as the last few months have been very depressing. My first downturn since retiring. Made me think of chunking it all and heading back to work. EEEESSSHHH :o

  7. lordofdelusion...is the one you bought in Robinsons a sturdy wooden one? i have one same as the picture in the above post but its starting to sag as our daughter outgrows it, and its time for a good wooden one...im yet to find anywhere that sells them, Tesco has one but its quite small in size and wouldnt last long till our girl is too tall for it...Supercheap also have one but its 7000 and didnt look real nice...any info much appreciated!

yes, it is wood. Sturdy but not quite as big as back in the US.

  8. We bought one at Robinsons in Phuket town. Complete with bumbers, mosquito netting, matress, quilt, just the works. About 5800 Baht if I can remember 9 months ago.

  9. On the top floor of Jungceylon, next to the movie theater, is an Acer shop. There is another on that floor too but go to the one nearest the theaters. Every software imaginable is already loaded on their machines and they are up and running for you to check out. The staff speaks pretty good English. I have purchased 2 laptops there.

  10. Show me a country that doesn't use oil and I'll invest right away. The others are going to have to wait for my money. It isn't about the sub prime crisis, housing, the consumer, the olympics, emerging markets, lousy governments, charts or any other fantasy. $140 a barrel oil. Start there. It's consuming the financial world.

  11. Sack the whole lot as far as I am concerned. I will always maintain that my worst flying experience was on a Thai flight from BKK to LAX. Worst ground service and inflight (lack of) service ever. I never miss an opportunity to tell others and here is a thread I can rant again!!!! Sell the national airline to Singapore. :o

  12. As a resident of this country, I follow the news closely. I don't have an agenda and I won't get on a soapbox or engage in a philisophical/political argument. I just want to say that after reading the volume of news on this subject, I think this country is run by incompetent, juvenile and largely clueless people. All sides, all members. Just a bunch of brats that all need to go for a nap!! :o This is the 21st century!! This is your country, your people!! Hello???

  13. I've been supporting a coup back home in the US for years. Not getting much momentum though. :o This Thai government, however corrupt or inept, is nothing compared to old W. Here's my solution. Let W run Thailand. Smaller military so he can do less damage. He will however quadruple their budget and the military will love him. Thaksin to the US to straighten out the economy and Samak goes back to the cooking show. There!

  14. The hotel was ..Club Andaman Beach Resort.. Patong.

Management and ownership at that place is the worst.

I'm really terribly sorry about this tragedy, but now that I know the hotel it ocurred at, I'm not surprised.

They pulled some really bad business tactics on me, can't stand that place.

If possible, if any good can come of this, please try and inform the people that make onshore arrangements that this is NOT a hotel they want to do business with.

Maybe a bit off topic, but I stayed there at one time and yes, tthe management is the worst. Service people stay somewhere else. My best wishes for the family and friends.

  15. Thanks to grantbkk for an excellent, long post in which the punch line was,

"However, once they venture out into the Land of Smiles and are confronted by the realities of broken sewer and transportation systems they may begin to regret their vacation choice. They will pass on their close calls of traffic accidents and random acts of violence they witness to the next batch of potential travelers. If things don’t improve dramatically, Thailand may eventually become known as “Burma with Electricity”. :o

Here here!! If Thailand wants the wealthy crowd, they need to understand that those people expect something for their money. Oddly, the BOT is defending the Baht recently to keep it from becomeing too weak thus raising the cost of vacationing here, (as well as exports; Thailand's 2 sources of income.) That , along with the rising price of travel should keep out a lot of middle class folk.

Just talking to several local business owners here on Phuket, Thai and farang, I am hearing about a 50% decrease in sales versus this time last year.

  16. Just a comment on the US perspective. I think the "home is your castle" thing leads to high walls and isolation. This is mine! Stay away! Very odd for my Thai wife. Here in our condo complex, each day all the Thai wives, make food, and hurry around exchanging dishes back and forth. We always have at least 3 dishes on the table as the woman walk in and out of each house delivering the goodies. Unheard of back home. If someone walked in your unlocked front door there, they would be shot!

  17. I´m living in Phuket and checking at the moment the options to put a little bit money on a saving bank account and trying to get the hightest interest as possible.

Siam Commercial giving only 2.4 - 2.7% for 1 year fix.

Can anybody recommend a bank which is paying a higher rate? If possible in the Chalong/Rawai/Kata/Karon area.

    thnks a lot

Siam commercial also has a mutual fund that invests in Thai bonds A fixed 3.5% I believe and you can get your money out anytime

  18. I am not a gloom and doomer. I believe in cycles, ups and downs and patience. But lately the world economic news is just depressing the s#i t out of me.

    http://news.yahoo.com/s/afp/20080607/ts_af...hinaindiaskorea

Yeah, the G8 will be hurt by high fuel prices. But those already poor in the developing world are just SOL. Those government subsidies of fuel in Malaysia, Indonesia and India can't continue. Quite a shock for them when they woke up Friday to 40% increases in Malaysia. Consumer debt in the US at all time highs :D The US consumer accounting for about 18% of global GDP and 70% of the US GDP. Foreclosures everywhere, jobless claims up. Thailand is occupied with government issues while international investors pull out . SET goes from 880 to 815 in short time. The Baht is falling, which is the only help for me as we just flew past 33.10 to the dollar. Food shortages :o World population at 6.5 billion. (when I was born, 2.8 billion) Somebody tell me something positive quick or I'm going to become one of those gloomy drama queens. This is my cry for help.

I'll be waiting for the good news down by the beach. Ahh, a bit of perspective. :D
