  1. I own a company in Pattaya that qualifies 2 work permits.

I am currently on a retirement extension but have decided to become active in the business, café/guesthouse and want to switch to a work permit and drop the retirement visa all together. What is the procedure and would I need to leave and return to the country. My retirement extension renews May 10th. Thanks in advance for any advise.

leave her, the house and the village. She got what she was working for after 6 long years. Give her the house as overpriced salary and have a free and happy life until the end.

Look here OP, You had a 6 year run that has gone south. Could have been you that got tired of the relationship but it was her first. Say your out 2M over what you might otherwise have in the bank. That's 900 baht per day of getting serviced, feed, maid ect. Not a bad deal, get free, she's the one that's going to suffer once your gone.

hats off... may the force be with you!

My elec/water/cable/internet are more than 10K. Outside the USA the places I have lived LOS is the most costly. Even though I own my homes and cars in Costa Rica and Brazil, the upkeep on each of them is equal to the 25K rent I pay here. At the end of the day my expenses are about 15-20% less than LOS. Quality of life is about the same although for different reasons. Over the years all three have become less attractive as far as retirement. My plan is to rent my places out, buy a killer diesel pusher registered in Arizona and cruise the country until I find a good place to park it. USA is one of the few places one can pull that off.

....one day per year, you must be very busy?

It's not only that. One of the main reasons I detest flying or Cruise ships is the fact you are confined with many people that likely carry germs and/or viruses. There is not a more ideal situation than being confined in a small immigration building for hours with hundreds of people from everywhere on the planet coming and going spreading contagious diseases. Airlines I cant avoid, Cruises I can and for a few thousand baht per year I will gladly avoid whatever disease farang are importing to Pattaya. Seems foolish to me to do otherwise.

  5. Here's my deal. I have dealt with immigration, visas, residency in several countries in Central, South America. It's a royal pain in the a**. My initial extension here I paid 20K to have my girl hook me up a bank account (walked up first in line) and then spent ten minutes getting my extension. My GF took care of the 90 day. April got renewed , same girl, bought her lunch. Just sent my GF to get my 90 day and come to find out I missed one 90 day that fell on the same date as my renew date, makes sense. I just assumed that since the info was the same, address ect., the 90 day was automatic like starting the process again. Anyway called my girl the other day to get my 90 day date and she said I missed the last one, <deleted>! No problem, my GF goes over to Jomtien, box lunch in hand, gives the 90 day and missed 90 day is forgotten. Bottom line is I paid my girl 14K mas or minus and a couple free lunches for 2 extensions, 5 - 90  days, a free pass on a missed 90 day (no fine) and hooked me up with a BB account with a really good bank clerk who takes great care of me. I have spent a grand total of maybe 20 minutes at Immigration Jomtien and the issue dealing with IO here is a zero burger and if I have any questions or a problem comes up the REAL answer is just a cell call away. The entire immigration deal is on auto-pilot. Seems to me a better option than being closed up in a confined space for 5 or 6 hours with 100+ people and their germs from every corner of the planet. Actually a far greater risk than flying if you think about it.

So where should I go for  safer roads, clean air and water, real law enforcement, education and stable government, and still be able to hang with young girls?

Lot of places. Problem is we need to find a time machine to take you back 40 years to a time  when young girls were attracted to your abs and hair rather than the 1000baht glued to your balled head. Until then keep doing what makes you happy cause you got the right place ! Really the best reason to be here if that's what you're looking for.

Not true. I found life in SoCal very sanitized and bordering on boring. I decided I wanted to retire to the tropics, always wanted to live in the tropics after seeing Africa at seventeen, and Asia at nineteen......it just took a while. Also if I lived in any of the countries you mentioned I wouldn't be living with a beautiful woman at my retired age......maybe an overweight and angry woman, but not funny and sexy, and makes me laugh many times a day. A joy to be with. If I had big big money I might consider living in England in the summer, and Santa Barbara in the winter. But I do not, so I enjoy my later years happy and comfortable.

Being the bar fine guy kinda makes you the exception. Nothing wrong with enjoying the young thing on your arm but for the majority that's not a consideration, been there done that , learned and moved on. I will state again Thailand is perfect for folks looking to retire for less than $1200/month and old guys wanting to hang with young girls. IMHO people with more means would find the opportunity costs to great to remain here. It's like how much am I willing to pay per month for safer roads, clean air and water, real law enforcement, education and stable government. Start adding up the cost of those options and Thailand becomes a very expensive experience relative to allot of places. Seems to me if one is going to spend US$5000-6000 per month these options should be standard. Again Thailand is a very nice cheap destination when compared to others similar ie; Cambodia, Laos, VN, PP or Central and South America.

i think there is some misunderstanding. i was referring to Thailand with its zero income tax on offshore earnings and claimed that there are not many other countries who offer that advantage.

No, I understood. I can exclude US$ 102K of offshore income but because I am a resident of Brazil I must pay taxes there where most all my income originates. In any case treaties in place preclude me having to pay taxes in both countries on the same income originating in Brazil.

"I also choose to have the convenience of deciding when I leave and when I go to any particular place - on my motorcycle... and I'll get there a lot quicker too and park anywhere too."

    That's 100% accurate.

You don't mention if you feel it's a safe mode of transport?.

I think Motos. are incredibly unsafe, big or small.

    Your thoughts on that matter?

Safer than Russian Roulette or dancing drunk on condo balconies.

I was just thinking about this topic again while i had my coffee.  I think its up to you, what you can live on.  No one can tell you what is the correct amount.  Perhaps you can live in a hut with a fan and out door toilet and eat mama noodles 3 times a day and go without health insurance and the like.  I was trying to break down my budget as it would be for a single guy.  If i was in bangkok or pattaya.

    15K Rent

    30K food

    30K whores and beve

    10K snuss

    10K health insurance

    4K electric

900 baht my post paid AIS phone

    900 baht internet

    300 water

10K other stuff visas, transport etc etc.

    Hope this helps you out.

Where are you signed up for health insurance @ 10K, mine is abit more, thanks?

Thank you for your inciteful reply. Yes, my thoughts are pretty much the same as yours. I was somewhat dismayed at all of the negativity in this thread and it gave me room for pause.

Again, I have been online since March and have a very good sense of what we are about to do and what it entails. It’s not a panacea, but I think it’s the right move for us overall.

Once again, thanks for the thoughtful reply and yes, let’s plan on meeting up in a few months.

    All the best!

Rent for one year, then make the call.

Some Thai women are the most beautiful I've ever seen. Overall, to my taste, Chinese women are the most beautiful in the world.

If that's so they sure don't vacation in Pattaya, all ugly with bruises on their heads from walking into things.

The media seizes upon events like this, dramatizing and exploiting them, each outlet raising the suspense-o-meter with increasingly breathless reporting to compete with rival brands for market share.  "Informing the public" becomes a secondary motivation; whether it's ever a primary factor, for some, is debatable.   In the after-after glow, no doubt, media will be nominating their peers for accolades and "best coverage" awards.  Books will be written.  Movies will be made with heart swelling music from Celine Dion, blasting the drama and ratings into outer space, no doubt.  Get while the gettin's good.

Philosophizing by the religious/spiritual types during and after a disaster, capitalizes on the media's efforts to ratchet up emotions, then exploits the entirely predictable weakness, gullibility and chemical withdrawals symptoms, in an equally disingenuous, self-serving way.   They manufacturer doubt where there is none in order to then pose a leading question which suggest some kind of mystical, supernatural intervention, or "super human" powers and ability.

    The "God of the Gaps".

Then there are realist who can objectively look back on an operation and determine what went right and wrong so mistakes can be avoided in the future. This never goes over well with the crowd that spews accolades freely when things go right but are also the first to throw the hangman's knot over a limb when things go south.

    Let's look at what lined up positively to affect the outcome;

-The coach who looked after the kids

-Vern the Brit cave expert who lived locally who knew the expert divers

-The weather which cooperated in the later portion of the rescue

-The tireless work of all the people on the ground

Let's look at what could have gone better and could have been critical if the weather had not cooperated and the anticipated rain materialized. The Governor who was in charge overall seems like a nice enough fellow and all but he has little or no experience in crisis management and is merely a government bureaucrat in a small rural area. Management and control in a crisis this large requires the best and brightest and a person experienced in logistics. Like Apollo 13 he doesn't need to be an expert in all systems, he needs to be able to delegate to the best in all fields of required expertise.

Had the rains came as expected and God forbid lives were lost all questions would point towards why were the kids not brought out earlier during the lull in rainfall. Those questions would lead to was everything done possible to dewater that cave and the question is no. Just as the diving was outsourced so should have been the dewatering. Not until July 5 did the Thai government seek technical advise from the India firm KBL Limited , the foremost authorities on dewatering. Critical time was wasted, photos showing 3-4" pipes attempting to dewater a huge cave. The pumps adequate to do the job still haven't arrived from the Netherlands. The logistics broke down which is often the case when any bureaucracy is involved, not exclusive to Thailand.

The lesson learned is pretty clear and that is in times of crisis such as this that Governments, which historically are no good at crisis management, should as early as possible seek out the best experts in Control, logistics and first responders no matter were they come from. In this case we were fortunate the weather cooperated.
