  1. Hey all. Recently I left my employment here for a contract in Vietnam, which fell through at the last minute due to ridiculous red tape. Anyhow, I had to quickly get a one-year Thai visa again and the fastest was the Retirement visa. I am married to a Thai, we own our property and in the past just had Non-O Marriage visas. I am now setting up a company here for my consulting gigs and will need to shift from Retirement to eventually a Non-B for the work permit within the next 2-3 months.

I am quite familiar with all the visa options so I don’t need advice on the special visas but I do wonder how best to begin the process of transferring out of Retirement and into a visa for work (Non-B). I am told that I must leave the country and return on another visa. I am considering the following options:

    1. Go to KL or Singapore and return with the 30 day Non-B for my company. Then register for the WP and the one year Non-B. Travelling is an issue these days and the length of time to process in Singapore and KL has extended to up to 5 working days whereas in the past it was 2-3 days max. This just adds more cost to the trip.

    2. Transfer over from Retirement to Marriage visa without leaving the country. Later obtain the work visa via the Non-O Marriage to Non-B. This option requires a two step approach and added administration, time and costs but avoids the flights and accommodations.

Just some background, I live and will work in Samut Prakan Province so I will not be dealing with Bangkok Immigration, only the SP Immigration office which I have dealt with for many years (nice folks there).

Anyone with the right experience and understanding that can give me some alternative ideas (not the expensive 5-year visas, not interested) in this process? Thanks !

  2. For what its worth, this was my list from last year at Samut Prakarn and I was approved on the first visit (no run arounds - I was shocked). This is for renewal of Marriage Visa only. Wife must attend with you. If you want respect, don’t show up in shorts and flip flops. Long trousers, dress shirt recomended. Dress well and act respectfully.

    1. Form T.M. 7 - must be filled out in front of officer. Or in ink, not pre-printed and filled in typed
    2. Original passport of the applicant plus signed photocopies x 2 (all stamped pages plus photo page).
    3. Copies of 90 day reporting evidence
    4. (Three) photographs of 4x6 cm. in size.
    5. Original and copy of Marriage Certificate (both sides) between the applicant and Thai spouse. (KorRor.2, KorRor.3, KorRor.22, Certification of confirmation the applicant is single before marriage), updated at the Amphur office
    6. Photocopy of I.D. card of Thai spouse, signed.
    7. Photocopy of Household registration in Bangkok (hers and yours, if you have a yellow book).
    8. 5-6 photographs of a.) All family members b.) Residence (exterior and interior) c.) Routine in Bangkok. Hard copy photos pasted onto A4, not printed from computer. Take photos in front of the front door with address number shown. I live in a condo so I also show photos of us standing in front of the condo building sign. Glue them to A4 pieces of paper.
    9. Map residence of the applicant in Bangkok. Hand drawn, roads written in Thai, not a Google map.
    10. Letter from the Thai Bank which confirms that the money is not less than 400,000 baht in your bank account. Get from the bank on the morning of the immigration trip.  Must be same date as visa application date.
    11. Original and photocopy of the applicant’s bank book which shows the balance is not less than 400,000 baht and must not dip below 400K over a period of 2 months (3 months is better, just to be sure).
    12. Must go to the ATM on the morning of visa application and withdraw a sum of money and then update the bank book.
    13. Receipt for TM 30 registering foreigners’s address. Obtain this within 24 hours of arriving back in Bangkok (if returning from a trip for instance). I didnt do this last year so I have no idea what will happen this year. Probably just accept the fine.
    14. Acknowledgement of terms and conditions for permit or temporary stay: sor tor mor 2  (แบบฟอร์ม สตม.2) Hand written.
    15. Acknowledgement of penalties for a Visa overstay. Hand written. (if any)
    16. Questionnaire for married couple. IO provide it for you on the day of application. I always keep a copy from the year before and fill in the same details. Just to be sure.
    17. You will be issued a one month visa and a IO will visit your home within that month to check.
    18. You and your wife take photos together at the Immigration office on their computer.
  3. As the title states, I haven't even been in Thailand for 3 years. Entered at Suvarnabhumi, got 1 month extension, plus 2 overland border crossings with 1 month extensions each. So it's actually my first time applying for an actual visa in years.

I’m confused. You’ve e been doing this for years? If so, this is probably why they have tagged you.

What I'm referring to is that it is a requirement to supply photos if your applying for an extension based upon marriage in Chiang Mai. I suggest you print some pictures in colour (normal A4 paper is fine), of yourselves at the location you currently reside. Include a picture displaying the house number, in front of the house, and a few pictures inside (in the bedroom, living room). Make sure you are both in the picture. I also supplied a few pictures from our wedding celebration. I suggest that you put a maximum of two pictures onto one piece of A4 paper. I supplied 6 pictures in total, 2 from our wedding celebration and 4 at our property.

I also included a photo of us together with a group of friends on a night out.

  6. I am just about to do my renewal tomorrow and working from last years list. I do my renewal at Samut Prakan Immigration so my requirements may be different but here is my list:

    • Form T.M. 7
    • Original passport of the applicant plus signed photocopies x 2 (all stamped pages, plus photo page). I do all pages just in case they send me back to the copier queue.
    • (Three) passport photographs (4x6 cm. in size). White background.
    • Original and copy of Marriage Certificate (both sides) between the applicant and Thai spouse. (KorRor.2, KorRor.3, KorRor.22 (Certification of confirmation the applicant is single before marriage), recently updated Kor Ror 2 at your local Amphur office (I update the Kor Ror 2 a few days before)
    • Photocopy of I.D. card of Thai spouse, signed.
    • Photocopy of Household registration in Bangkok (my yellow book).
    • 5-6 photographs of a.) All family members b.) Residence (exterior and interior) c.) Routine in Bangkok. Hard copy photos pasted onto A4, not printed from computer.
    • Map residence of the applicant in Bangkok. Hand drawn, not Google map or other. Directions written in Thai.
    • Letter from the Thai Bank which confirms that the money is not less than 400,000 baht in the bank account. Get from the bank on the morning of the immigration trip.  Must be same date. I do not know what this letter is supposed to say, so be careful. Most times the bank will have no clue what you are asking about. If anyone has a copy of the text and can upload, I would appreciate it.
    • Original and photocopy of the applicant’s bank book which shows the balance is not less than 400,000 baht and must not dip below 400K over a period of 2 months (3 months is better). Must go to the ATM on the morning of visa application and withdraw a sum of money and then update the bank book and photocopy again.
    • Receipt for TM 30 registering foreigners’s address. Obtain this within 24 hours of arriving back in Bangkok (if returning from a trip for instance).
    • Acknowledgement of terms and conditions for permit or temporary stay: sor tor mor 2  (แบบฟอร์ม สตม.2)
    • Acknowledgement of penalties for a Visa overstay form.
    • Questionnaire for married couple (this is only obtainable at the Immigration department. I cannot find a downloadable copy of the form. It asked her questions about how you met etc.

I will update this file tomorrow when they will likely add some more documents to the pile.

What exactly are you referring to in this portion of your statement above. Are you saying that photos of your wedding ceremony and husband & wife at the home must be provided? Is this indeed a requirement or merely something that Immigration has asked for in the past? Please explain further because I am unaware of such a requirement. I just got married at the city hall in Hang Dong recently, and will be going to Promenada (Chiang Mai Immigration) about this soon.

Photos of the two of you sitting on your bed, in the kitchen, couch and in front of the residence showing the address clearly in the photo. I stand outside my condo door and also the sign at the entrance. Note that these must not be printed from a computer but glossy 4x6” pasted to a piece of A4. At least this is how they do it at Samut Prakarn so best to be safe.

You have to be on a work permit and paying taxes for 3 consecutive years to apply for PR.

There is no other basis you could apply for.

    You sure? I found this.

    • The applicant must be able to meet one of these categories to apply for PR status in Thailand:

      • Investment category (minimum THB 3–10 Million investment in Thailand)

      • Working/Business category

      • Support a family or Humanity Reasons category: In this category, the applicant must have a relationship with a Thai citizen or an alien who already possesses a residence permit as a husband or wife; father or mother; or a guardian of a Thai child under 20 years of age.

      • Expert/academic category

      • Other categories as determined by Thai Immigration

  9. What about a situation where one has the required 3 years of back-to-back marriage visas but, one works offshore and brings in his income? Obviously, I do not have a work permit in this situation. However, I have lived in TH for 30 years and most of that time I was working with work permits. I am guessing past work permits hold no merit?

Is there not a different class of PR for people that do not or have not worked in Thailand?
