Confirmation that even those of us who have been lucky enough to get a shot are not out of the woods.
QuoteA study published Thursday in the journal Nature found that just a single dose of Pfizer's or AstraZeneca's vaccines – both of which require two shots – was either weakly or not at all effective against Delta.

I have no objection to have a tracking app and I understand why Thai wants it. But, I don't trust the other end of the information safeguard. The app requests almost all permissions from your phone.

They can see all your personal documents and pictures.
Access to your location should be enough, I don't understand why the need to see my pictures and files.
Right, I agree those permissions do seem to be over the top. A good app will always explains why it needs certain permissions. Also, I share you concern with how the data would be handled. I think incompetence rather than malice would be most likely to lead to a breach of privacy. Look at what happened recently with the immigration booking system.

A fully-vaccinated tourist has tested positive. He is in hospital and the rest of his group are in quarantine.

Good post, and it certainly looks like the right decision for you not to come.
One thing I don't fully understand is your concern about privacy. What data are you concerned about sharing?

Problem is, if this gets out of hand, & the owner is Thai, you know, the loss of face and all, OP has sweet FA of getting his deposit back as a form of payback.
Yeah, it was slightly tongue in cheek. If the OP can find a better, cheaper place, and then go back to the current landlord and say something like "I'd really like to stay here but I can't afford to pay increase rent. I've had a look around and found these places...". The landlord might be persuaded to drop the idea of an increase, but pushing for a reduction is probably hoping for a lot.

They only update the list twice a month on the 1st and the 16th.
So, presumably travel will be possible until at least the 16th. The Thai embassy in London is still saying that you can travel to the sandbox.

Not sure where the list you posted is still valid now due to the UK being on the list of high risk countries now. The rules state only those from low or medium risk countries qualify for the sandbox.
I guess it's a left-hand right-hand thing. It does seem probable that the UK will be off the list soon, if it is isn't already.

Find a cheaper place and tell the landlord you are leaving. When he changes his mind and tells you that you can stay, tell him you'll only stay if he reduces the rent to match the other place you found.

That list is dated the 30th of June.
The new one showing the UK as being on the high risk list posted in this topic earlier is dated the 1st of July.
I think they're different lists. The one I posted is the list of countries from which you can travel to enter the Phuket sandbox.

This seems to be the list of allowed countries and the UK is still on it. But it wouldn't be surprising to see the UK removed pretty quickly, given posts like this one

We are flying into Phuket this weekend from Bangkok, and I want to make sure that I understand what is required of us for our trip.
1. Proof of vaccination OR proof of Covid test OR medical certificate of recovery from Covid2. Register trip on Go Phuget website.
3. Download and register MorChana app on cell phone
Am I missing anything? Regarding MorChana app, does one still need to scan the ThaiChana codes entering businesses?
We are expats residing in Bangkok, and have not left Thailand since the Covid pandemic started.
Please let us know how it goes. I'm planning a similar trip in a week or so. My understanding was that all you need is item 1 on your list, and the other requirements are for people flying in from abroad.
...
Editing to add that, from the link to the Phuket News article, above, it seems that everyone is now required to install the app.
Quote“Additionally, all arrivals must install the tracing Mor Chana app. Anyone who does not follow this condition will not be allowed entry to the island,” the Governor added.

A recent NNT post is talking of 70% having had their first shot by the beginning of October. The Khasod graphic is talking about 70% having had 2 shots by the end of the year.
QuotePM Prayut said that Thailand has now negotiated with six suppliers of vaccines, namely Pfizer, Johnson and Johnson, Moderna, AstraZeneca, Sinovac and Sinopharm. By the end of year, he said Thailand would have amassed 105.5 million doses, which is sufficient to inoculate all the Thai population. At this juncture, the government plans to administer an average of 10 million jabs a month from July so that by early October almost 50 million people, or 70 per cent of Thai population will have had their first shot.

It's this one. The blue line is the target, the red bars, the vaccinations. It looks like the average for the month was about 50% of the target.

Only about 50% of the population on Phuket has been FULLY vaccinated. Another 20% or so have only received their first shot of Sinovac or AZ, which doesn't provide much protection. And the remainder haven't been vaccinated at all.
IMO, it's not quite as safe an environment as you post above wants to believe.
Fair enough, but compared to most places, it's pretty good. Also, it's a relatively small population with a low infection rate and a very high priority. They're continuing to vaccinate and tightly controlling entry. For me, it compares very well to the vast majority of alternatives, but everyone has their own circumstances and priorities.

so health wise, I don’t think there is so much of an issue, but in terms of enjoying a holiday, there are some negatives to think about that other destinations perhaps don’t have
Sure. Everyone's, circumstances are different.

I personally think you are missing the point. The only vaccination that really gives you protection is your own. If you have that, you’re pretty safe anywhere.
I agree. And if you're in a place where the great majority is also vaccinated, that reduces even further the small possiblity of contracting the disease after being vaccinated. It also means that the it is much easier for them to lift the covid-related restrictions.

Far too much of a risk travelling to Thailand for the moment IMO so we'll just have to disagree.
Agreed. ????

Only if you don't test positive for COVID, or it is off to a field hospital for you with a squat toilet and a winnie the pooh bedding set for company, at your own expense, of course.
At least it will be a holiday you'll never, ever forget.
Being fully vaccinated, having had a negative test less than 72 hours before traveling and being on an island where most of the population is vaccinated, you'd have to be pretty unlucky to test positive. If that did somehow happen, your mandatory insurance would cover the treatment. It's a risk I'd be prepared to take, but to each his own.

Just now, Laughing Gravy said:At least where I am most people have been vaccinated, they don't have a COVID pandemic like Thailand and a much more competent government with regards to the pandemic.
Sure, it depends on whereabouts in Thailand you want to go. I'm in BKK and I'm heading to Phuket. I'm just deciding whether to wait another 12 days until my vaccine has fully kicked in, or get a PCR test and go now.

I hope that you would have all the health insurance and documents that are required. Just in case.
I would like it to playing a game of Russian roulette.????
Right now, it's a dangerous world. At this moment in time, I can't think of that many places I'd rather be than Phuket.

I certainly would. Despite the massaging of the figures, Phuket is set to have one one of the highest per capita vaccination rates on the planet. Entry is rigorously controlled. Beaches are quiet. Hotels are cheap. Social-distancing is easy. I'd prefer that they'd used exclusively AstraZeneca, but, even so, if I were stuck in the UK now, I'd jump at the chance to go to Phuket.

With Anki cards, can you only use on computer or also on an Android?
It's free on desktop and Android. There's a paid version for iPhone. To synchronise, you just press a button and wait a few seconds.

I'm another Anki devotee. I've used it for years.
On 6/23/2021 at 12:00 PM, Bredbury Blue said:Do you recommend this method of acquiring and retaining new words? How do you use it (i.e. can you offer a very basic guide to how someone should use Anki).
The basic principle is a card with Thai on one side and English on the other, but there are many variations. You can also add pictures or sound. Anki will test you on the cards everyday. If you get a question right it will wait a couple of days before asking you again. If you keep getting it right, it will wait a longer period before asking you again: 1 day, 2, days, 4 days, 8 days, 16, days, etc. The amount by which it increases is configurable by you. On the the other hand, if you get the question wrong, you're back to square one. It resets to 1 day, 2 days, 4 days etc. All of this means that if you find a question easy, if you know the answer well, you don't waste time reviewing it over and over again. You spend most of your time learning new cards, or re-learning ones that you've forgotten or find difficult.
There are many different types of question you can set up
- See the English and say to yourself what the Thai should be
- See the English and type the equivalent in Thai
- Hear the Thai and type it in Thai
- Fill in the missing gap in a Thai sentence.
- See a picture of something and write the name of it in Thai.
If you want audio on your cards you, have to add it yourself. That means it's handy if your know a bit about computers, so that you can use an audio editing program or can download audio from websites or Youtube. Another way to add audio to a card is just to record it directly into Anki. You just click a button and speak. When I was starting out, I did this with a teacher often. I showed her the Anki card and she recorded it into the card. Subsequently, when Anki tested me on that card, I heard her speaking the question.
There many Thai Anki decks that you can download for free but I almost exclusively make my own. The are more targeted to what I need, and the process of creating the cards is a good learning experience in itself.

Seems like the simplest and fairest way would be to allow everyone to fill in the form at their leisure over a period of, say, one week. Then choose 500, or however many doses they have, at random from all of the submitted applications.
