After a lifetime avoiding such matters, therefore not an expert, the 50,000 wasn't a fine,
but bail, which I believe is paid by a suspect as a bond to ensure that he turns up in
court on the appointed date to face sentencing.
I may well be wrong......
And the explanation for refusing to issue an receipt for the 50K is...?

There is a big sign with the consequences. Or do you expect the laws especially here in Thailand are not valid for foreigners? Is it like this in your home country?
Well, mostly ALL the times, it looks like the law (at least the punishment) are valid ONLY for foreigners...!

So with all the police I start asking myself. Is Phuket a state in Thailand? Why do they need to stop all vehicles. Checkpoint for what reason?
Buriram does the same.

Why the need to quarantine when they have already been locked down in Phuket for the past 2 months ? The strictest and only province in Thailand that recently had a sub district lock down ? Makes no sense.
You do not know how it has been in Buriram and the Nan Provinces then...

So you think people that have died are tested?
If they aren't tested alive, why you think they will when they have passed away?
They NEED to test / check the bodies to find the reason for passing away...

I think you need to check some facts before making silly claims...
Singapore was managing very well and still are. The spike in cases is within foreign worker dormitories, which have been isolated since the first clusters appeared there.
Cases around Singapore have remained relatively consistent, 50-100 per day, tested, isolated and contact tracing done.
We can still go out to exercise, shop etc so there really is no panic here.
From yesterday.. Straits times quote..
"Of the 596 new cases, 544 were work permit holders residing in dormitories. Only 25 are Singaporeans or permanent residents. There were no imported cases."
Singapore is actually among the HIGHER in number of infected per 100K inhabitants.
Actually at 15th place of all countries in the world.
Singapore: 6 588 infected, 112,6 persons pr 100K -

SO MUCH NEGATIVITY!!! ????
Although valid points have been made, there is just too much negativity and pessimism here.
Yes, the government need to actually allow flights to land and tourists to enter without jumping through hoops. This is just stating the obvious.
I think that the original post is saying that when things brighten up, the tourism industry needs to welcome back everyone with open arms, and honest, warm smiles. But, as usual, the TVF regulars like to copy each other with Doomsday predictions and digs at each other and the establishment.
Nope, it is not "negativity", it is called REALISM!!!

a certain reality is returning to gov after the mass panic.people will need to travel they do now, business and work,we need to meet up ,relationships families have been seperated, kids without fathers wifes apart from husbands.some people may holiday as so many people are working....online.the moneys there.so regionally its a go and soon, the virus doesnt prosper in sunlight it dies thats what has saved thailand.most importantly the economy must start to drive again and tourism in thailand is massive.so get at it,test people on exit and entry.allow regional travel except china of course.japan singapore s korea hk taiwan philippines malaysia all this is easy enough.business repatriation family and loved ones re uniting and tourism to some degree but all these others need t eat and sleep somewhere.
You are wrong about that sunshine kills Covid-19...

You really have no other point, whenever the drought is mentioned, than pointing at Songkhran?
This is so <deleted> sad!
Well, the government HAVE reduced the water waste at this (IMO) terrible "festival" before, so I do find this extension of the crazyness MORE "sad"!

I've wondered what would happen if someone simply put down the bill and the money on the counter and walked away when the passport was demanded
I DID - many years ago, on the way from my condo at the beach, and up to my house in Isaan.
Had some friends in the car, and we had a few beer on the way. (wife driving)
We needed some stock "refill" on the way, but it was at the "wrong time" of the day, (before 17:00)
I just picked my beer, they said No no NO, can NOT!
I just left the money (+some extra, to be sure) told them to "Do what you want" and went out...
Worked fine, that time. -

The responses are understandable given that you need to present a passport at the thai post office to send a birthday card. And the only thing conspiring here is your lack of understanding of the term and its proper use lol.
Never EVER needed to preset ANY ID to send stuff around in Thailand, OR to Europe.
I am talking about post offices at Jomtien Beach AND the Surin area in Isaan.
Never heard anyone mention this "crazyness" regarding post offices before! -

No Happy, I do not carry a copy, I only carry my Pink ID card. Copy is on my Phone, which I did not have with me as I left it at home.
Same for me.
I only bring my Thai driving licenses when i am in the neighbourhood, and never had any problem for 20 yrs.
At longer trips it is different, of coarse... -

You`re right, but STILL his member card was registrated first of all.
MAYBE that was the reason? I have no idea. -

I'm from the UK, a pretty sad country these days by anyone's standards but I've never ever been asked for ID when paying for anything with a debit or credit card. We don't even have to carry ID.
A little OT, BUT you should be MORE than happy now, finally got out of the corrupt EU JAIL!

I was at Big-C in Surin Tuesday a week ago, did all my shopping and paid (with cash) as usual.

Just for context purposes, it is worth remembering in these virus discussions...
--In Thailand, about 24,000 people per year die in road crashes.
--In Thailand, an estimated 38,000 people die per year from causes related to high air pollution levels here.
A prudent person can do things in Thailand to avoid becoming a road fatality and to avoid the impacts of high air pollution levels.
Likewise, a prudent person can do things in Thailand to avoid contracting the coronavirus, which right now has a far lower risk level to the average person than either of the other two causes of fatalities.
Remains to be seen whether the government authorities here will be as IN-EFFECTIVE in dealing with the coronavirus as they long have been at preventing road fatalities and air pollution.

OP didn't say what countries' PP he holds but in UK, they just cut the corner off old ones and stamp "Cancelled" on all pages.
IMO, do update your details with the bank - if/when you want to change almost anything on the account, you will be asked to show it. I'm going to have to get a new card from SCB in a couple of weeks and I did update my PP details when I changed it last.
Have used SCB (at Jomtien) for almost 20 yrs, and never updated anything, and i am at my third passport now...
Never had any problems with new cards or anything else.
Never HEARD before of an updating for new passport...- 1
