If you thought that was a groaner, read on ...

A scientist is driving along the highway, and sees a rabbit lying on the road after it had just been run over. He stops to check it out.

Since he just happens to be researching a formula to bring dead things back to life. He takes a can of his formula over to the dead rabbit, and sprays it on the rabbit. Nothing happens.

He heads back to his car, grabs another can from the glove box, and again sprays the rabbit. The rabbit quickly comes back to life, somewhat stunned but alive nonetheless.

It starts hopping away, then stops and waves at the scientist, hops a few feet, stops and waves. It keeps hopping and waving until it disappears into the bushes.

The scientist is puzzled as to why the first can failed but the second worked. He looks at the label…

"HAIR RESTORER - With Permanent Wave"

    A good joke.

  2. Hello there,

Instead of answering your questions using the format you suggested I will just say what's on my mind in relation to the problems you have with Thai Language.

First I think your problem is not enough of listening. You need to listen to the spoken language by that I mean many many hours. In fact if possible be in the environment where people speak Thai all the time.

Do not write anything or practice writing the script yet. You may write the pronounciation down if you tend to forget (that's in romanized alphabet) the word.

Do not read , yes, no reading.

All the writing and reading come later when you are ready. Reading and writing will slow you down your understanding the spoken language. You will find you couldn't understand well the spoken language and as a result you couldn't speak it well.

Listen, listen, listen,(many many hours) understand and then speak. Forget the writing and reading for the time being.

I am not a linguist or lecturer in university but I have gone through the experience you are having. I studied Japanese and made the mistake by learning writing and reading then found the problem with understanding spoken Japanese and couldn't speak it well. It took me another 4 years to correct that and now about 80 percent better.

Anxiety and desire to master the language fast is very bad for learning foreign languages. If you are relaxed and don't take it too seriously it would help a lot.

Good luck to you. Please google - Stephen Krashen on Learning foreign language. After you understood what he said you will improve tremendously.

Why children learn fast because they don't write and read and they have no anxiety. When they made mistakes they laugh about it. See what I mean. You need to be in that frame of mind.

How many years ago was that you had a difficult time in Malaysia because nobody spoke English? Where is QL? Do you mean KL? The Brits started colonizing/interfering with the Malays in the late 1700's. Surely, you aren't that old. I traveled around Malaysia by train and car in 1967-68. Rarely encountered anyone without a British accent--from taxis drivers, to railway workers, to hotel and restaurant staff, to ladies of negotiable virtue; and one rather enticing young masseuse in Ipoh who insisted, "Lie still now, whilst I toss you off"

I am just curious, what does it means "whilst I toss you off"- does it means "I wvnk you off"- i never heard this expression "I toss you off". Was she doing a h job for you?

  4. This plastic problem is particularly difficult problem to solve because it involves the attitude of the general public.

Do they care? Are they selfish? A certain number of the population do not even understand how bad plastic is for the environment.  They cannot imagine the problem even if you explain to them. Some of these people are so poor does it matter to them if plastic waste cause problems, their concern is very much on money.

The educated section of the population the office workers etc., do they make an effort to reduce the usage of plastic? If it is too much of a hassle then they don't care either. It's an attitude problem.

  5. I have yet to see any government that is kind, sympathetic and understanding. So I guess you cannot possibly expect anything from them. If a new civil servant who was kind in doing his job he would soon be told by his senior that it was not the way to get the job done.

I am talking from experience because I had suffered injustice by the governments of 2 different nations( I cannot mention the countries) I have no way to seek redress. Though it was not a big or serious matter nevertheless I felt insulted.

I told my teenage son if he wants to work for any government after he graduated he could leave this house now. I don't intend to bring up my son to work for any government. Relating the matter here while I am typing I can sense my anger rising from my belly.

I hope you will be able to sort out your problems. My sympathy.

  6. Will some kind souls out there who have knowledge about shipping by containers let me know how do I go about shipping secondhand clothings, backpacks, shoes in bulk from Japan. I wish to buy them in Japan and ship them to Malaysia(not Thailand) and sell them there.

If I personally go to Japan to select those items that I would like to sell would it be too time consuming? It would not be a one time business it would be an on going business of secondhand personal items.

I hope to get some informations.

  7. A friend of mine built a home-made water heater but it is not solar panel system. He just made use of the energy from the sun. He had these water pipes all painted black to absorb heat and these pipes run up and down like the car (old car system)cooling system. He also install mirrors that will reflect the sun light onto those pipes. Of course on raining day ( long hours of rain) then no hot water.

Well, he get hot water during the day and warm water at night. In the morning the water is not cold just normal room temperature. I quite like the idea.

Anyone seen this kind of home-made water heating system?
