  1. As Kipling said, "East is East and West is West, and never the twain shall meet" Still true in many areas of life.
  2. I'm giving the wrong impression here. I don't mean Europeans aren't criminal, I simply observe a strong trust in laws within the Europeans (I mean American, Canadian etc... too) when compare to the Thai people. In the mind of the Finnish guy Jay he has a piece of paper which gives him a sense of security because he believes the system will protect him. Thai people in my observation don't have this same trust because they know there is a corruption in the officials and the paper is only as good the person willing to enforce it, which may never happen. I've never gone through the legal system in Thailand but I don't trust it because I see the Thai people themselves don't trust their authorities. That's my only point. Perhaps what you're both alluding to is that in Western countries, the law is more likely to be applied equally to all parties, regardless of whether they're locals or foreigners. Clearly, there's often an element of "who you know" but I think that's far more the case in Thailand.
  3. And again, you seem to have hit the nail on the head. Or to put it another way, the Khun Chairattananon shooting himself in the foot by taking lessons from "Bar Girl 101." ☹
  4. I know several, all of whom thought it was easy which is how it appears if its being done properly! If one is good at a job, one can make it look easy! In reality, running any business requires a whole set of skills and attributes that not everybody possesses. Some you can learn, some you cannot. Additionally owning a bar in Thailand has other issues such as who can hold a licence, and who might have to be "paid off" in cash. A British friend who used to have a bar on Phuket once confided in me that the only advantages of owning the bar were that he could "drink at cost price" and that "his friends all came to see him" He turned into a famous nasty drunk and his wife gave him an ultimatum: "The bar or me". Sensibly, he chose her (she's a lovely lady) and sold the bar - they live in contented retirement.
  5. Posted as yet another joke by the enthusiastic @ballpoint (👍) but sometimes I find myself thinking just that 🙄🤔😋
  6. Again, Thanks all for your responses 👍
  7. Thank you very much. I think someone's being "economical with the truth" which was what I set out to establish with this thread.
  8. Wow good catch, luckily you managed see the error before leaving the airport! Yeah sounds like you will be good but they will probably still give you the run around when you leave just for the lols, enjoy the rest of your time in Thailand. Update (I forgot to do it last week) Had no problems leaving on April 5th (my "permitted until" date was April 7th) Presented passport as usual - fingerprints and photos as usual - stamped out - done.
  9. Thank you...and to others who have posted. 👍 I think you may be on the mark there - the pictures I've seen do not indicate anything like a sturdy construction and it does look like the roof suffered worst of all. I'm attempting to be discreet and not show people so the only pic i can show is this one.
  10. Can anyone kindly confirm or deny that on Monday there were extreme winds in the Surin region; enough to demolish a house! Reason I ask is that I'm being sent pictures of a house destroyed apparently Monday 15th / Tuesday 16th April and I am doubting that it was that bad. Grateful for any serious responses - please refrain from flippancy.
  11. Have to disagree with you there Chivas. One of the reasons I like my Kindle is that, when sat by the pool, the Kindle is easier to read, less likely to get affected by sunlight and heat and offers me a choice of as many books as I can load on it. Poolside reading is a big thing for me too. Mind you, in agreement with you, I don't see too many other people doing the same....maybe I'm just a trendsetter?
  12. From the OP, this sentence is somewhat confusing as, for several years there has been no requirement for a TM6 when arriving by air. Perhaps it should say "The requirement for the form will still not apply to international visitors who arrive by air."
  13. Having lived in Houston in the eighties, I agree. The thing with people from the southern USA (in my personal experience) is that they tend to be unaware of foreign events, compared, that is, to those from "above the line". BUT.... I found people from the South (those damn rednecks 😆 ) to be very courteous and gregarious. Before anyone jumps at me for generalising, these are just my personal experiences!
  14. No - wouldn't work...they've got no bottle 🙄 OK
  15. To be fair, whilst the promotion in Billabong is ridiculous, it's actually quite fair IF you plan on an even number of drinks! It works out as "Pay almost the price of 2 beers and get 2 beers" so a small saving. If you have an odd number of drinks though, it's expensive - THAT'S where they catch the unwary. Triangle bar ("Pothole") operates a similar system.
  16. They still do the pub crawls but from the Buzzin' lounge in "Pothole"
  17. Goodness - And I thought I was an anorak! Still, if it keeps you "SMILING" knock yourself out. 😆 More seriously, it took me a little while to get used to reading books on my Kindle - now I prefer it to a paperback (which was my former choice) for several reasons. May I suggest persevering? You know it makes sense Rodney 😋
