I don't follow this story. The guy with the newborn son does not have a work permit or PR so how does this news story help him. I would imagine that most guys that are married to a Thai are in same boat.
Sadly don't see a lot of joy in this for many with family/wife in Thailand.
Repaitrate, sure. This week my 5 month old Thai daughter was denied by the Thai embassy to repaitrate with her heartbroken mother. Only because I would have to personally take her. The mother and baby have been separated for 3 months now. At what point do these government officials care about anybody if the don't care about a baby and a mother. At least the Thai embassy gave it consideration. The US embassy don't even have a response that relates to anything you say (email).

In mid March, I had to take our 3 month old Bangkok born Thai/US daughter to the US, without mom. Baby had her US passport before the Thai passport, so she was in the country on a VOA. Once we got the Thai passport, we tried everything to reverse this, including border runs.
Our 15 months in the making K1, canceled interview has passed weeks ago.
We tried twice to get a Tourist visa to the US for mom. No consideration was given. We appealed to the US embassy for a hardship. The US embassy staff in Bangkok is probably the worst group of people to be forced to deal with.
Its great having time with the baby, but since I am self employed, its virtually impossible to work. Then there is the full time job trying to keep mom sane being without her newborn, impossible! This is pure emotional distress for mom with no end in sight.
The Thai embassy in the US has given a good response to try and get baby back to mom, we will see. If successful, we would be separated but I will be able to get back to work.
This situation seems to needlessly drag on and on. I don't really know anyone that believes that all of this shut down and isolation is really worth the cost for all of the other disasters that have been created. I don't know anyone who believes that we are being told the truth.

Something else to think about now.
US companies are banning anyone coming from China or Thailand, for coming to their locations.
I have been advised to get out of Thailand asap.

Anyone here have multiple citizenships therefore multiple passports? Might be a good idea to alternate using each one for a METV. For example:
1st time - Use your home country's passport, go to the Thai embassy in your local city and get the METV visa in that passport. After 9 months go back to your home country.
2nd time - Now you're in your home country you use your 2nd passport from a 2nd citizenship/2nd country but go to the same Thai embassy in your local city and get a METV visa in the 2nd country's passport. Enter Thailand on that passport. After 9 months go back to your home country.
Then do that loop swapping between passports/visas continuously.
I just wonder, would immigration at the airport be able to put together that it's the same person entering on a different country's passport? Surely with the full name being the same in their system and on both passports it's highly likely their system will match it. If not by the name & birth dates then by the photos in their system. Or if their fingerprint scanners get up and running then by the fingerprints. What do you all think?
I don't have multiple citizenships, but I doubt different countries are linked for names and birthdays.
I know that the US can't keep it straight with the same name, and nothing else matches. (that story is in the thread somewhere).
Here is what I think, that is way too much hassle to come into Thailand. There must be a good reason to come if you have to put in that much effort.
It's probably easier to just get the proper visa from the primary country. Prepare for the worst.
Fingerprint scanners will change everything. What I worry about, what if there are any problems, how do you deal with this issue? No technology is perfect.

Yes there is a appeal allowed. You complete a TM11 form, pay the 1900 baht fee and they have to respond to it within 7 days.
This option was never offered when I was in the situation. I asked, ignored.
Where would you present the appeal and where would you wait the 7 days?
Maybe download the form, print, file in the suitcase with a good pen?

You haven't been banned.
After this current 60 day stay you can get 30 day extension. Then do border runs 30 + 30 Extensiin twice. During that time obtain your Elite visa.
My experience, doing border runs and coming in from a neighboring country puts up more red flags. I did 2 border runs in 2 years. The 2nd border run was the one that got me tagged. I found myself back at SFO 25 hours later. My suggestion, get the visa you need and come in that way. Eventually, find other living options for the day Thailand becomes too difficult to enter.

The first post says he's been doing this for two years. A month in and a week out. Isn't this what elite visas are for. Using Visa on Arrival is scamming the system. I'm surprised it last two years. If he's doing it for the GF then he should get married. He could also get multiple entries if it requires trips back.
I did get a 6 month tourist - multiple entry visa. This has made things better. We have applied for a K1 visa. 4 months and nothing. We have a child on the way, I was hoping the child could be born in the US. At this rate it's doubtful.

Very unfair. You should register a protest in your country against Thai Immigration. You are an American for God's sake and you dont deserve to be treated like that.
I have been treated much worse by US border patrol at the Mexican border, recently because someone with my name has a warrant out. Just last year. In 4 hours nobody was cleaver enough to see that race, age, tattoos, city, state and other obvious things didn't fit. I was in handcuffs more than 4 hours and had no idea why. I was not allowed to talk, isolated in a room. Much worse then the Thailand immigration. Then, like nothing ever happened, I'm free to go. Every time I came back to the US, always a hassle until one kind person spent the 30 seconds to make the connection. Nowhere is perfect.

When they denied you, did they make you buy a plane ticket back or gave u one? lol
Can anyone summarize 18 pages of what happened? thanks
EVA Air escorted me all the way to SFO like a criminal. They never said anything about a return ticket. I found out later that they did charge my return ticket.

Follow up,
The 6 month multiple entries visa has been nice. The first time back, there was a hesitation. Since, then I have traveled to Europe a couple of times. I always pack my bags as if I will be returned to the US. However, (with fingers crossed) 3 times entering the country has not been a problem.
I do spend $$, I don't work in Thailand. I do travel, by motorcycle, as much as I can. I have learned, don't give any red flags, then it's easy coming into the country.
The tourist visa gives 90 days, so no more 30 day stress.
I am going on my 3rd year of being primarily here. I find that I have less stress here than I do in the US. Probably because I can ride everyday. No politics and a wonderful fiance.

Got the new passport.
Went to the Thai consulate in Los Angeles.
Submitted all the paperwork.
Have a 6 month ME visa.
Caught the flight to Bangkok.
Immigration scanned the passport, did quite a bit of reading, stalling, I knew there was a problem. Then, stamp, stamp and I'm in.
What I know now, this will always be an issue now.
There will always be a high probability that I will be sent back, because no matter what, this past incident will always show up. This past incident where someone only thought that I had too many entries.
I will think about Cambodia in the future.

The OP could not have ended in one in his position.
There have been no crimes committed.
Work is not in Thailand.
Only so many entries and exits per year for 2 years.
I talked to Siam Legal. They confirmed the unlimited entries by air. They say however, you build a profile, thats what they look for. They recommend not going to another nearby country to gain entry, more bad profile.
Siam Legal recommendations getting a Thai visa in the home country first.

OP said "I usually stay up to 1 month, go back to the US for a week or more." so most likely he had a flight back within 30 days, and might as well have had the 10k baht. But probably they didn't even ask him for any of it, they just wanted to deny his entry.
Sounds like OP made only short term visits of not more than 30 days and then back home, so actually this should be one of the situations for which visa exempts were made.30
30 day, unlimited entries.
I don't work in Thailand.
I am a software engineer, I run my own business in San Jose California.
I take phone calls, I remotely provide support to places all around the world.
I do this work from the condo, hotels, passenger in a car, airports, motorcycle trips, everywhere.
The first mistake,
I let my passport fill up with stamps.
Second mistake,
I allowed immigration to talk to the GF. She knows that I have a form of work, but nobody can explain the difference.
Lessons learned,
Renew the passport
Stick with a message, don't bring anyone else into the situation.
You come to Thailand to travel and see the country.
Thats what I do.
Addition information for immigration is TMI.

Why can't you just stay in Vietnam or Malaysia instead ? What is it with this Thai bug that force you to come back ? Clearly they don't want us
It's the Thai GF. Otherwise, I agree.

The next most logical step,
Get a 2nd passport.
Try again.
If problems,
Give up, don't come back.

Given all the "boiler room" raids in recent years, what your girlfriend told them can easily be interpreted in an unfavorable way. If she had said you just travel around and visit the temples with her, who knows!

I think you have a 2 and 3.
I think that you are correct that they assume that. They asked for no evidence either way. I never worked in Thailand, I'm not sure why they assumed this. They talked to the girlfriend. She told them that I am working at night on the phone to America. They probably don't understand that. I run a small company and am on the phone at night. Try to explain that one.

Yeah, but it is well known the crack down now. You just got caught. Even us long stayers are starting to wonder if the IO has her period or they just don't like our look and deny us on reentry.
BTW.
-Was the IO a man or woman?
-Do you travel business or economy?
-Your age?
-How do you dress?
Travel business, flannel shirt and jeans. Age is near 60. Male.

A new passport would create a better initial impression and would be seen more favourably regarding applying for visas etc. Your immigration history will all be visible on their database though.
You're asking
I have noticed that the immigration at BKK slows down and really looks the passport over because of the number of entries. I think that is as simple as it is. They see many entries and just takes the right person to say something.

I am waiting for a K1 visa. Not much I can do in the meantime. Even after the K1 is completed, we planned to stay in Thailand most of the time.

I'm back at SFO, I am considering flying again to a neighboring country and try to get entry again. It's a brutal flight :(.

Same for and I had more than you. They don't really care if you have money but they have to use a "legal" reason to deny entry.
It's kind of stupid to deny us. I spend quite a bit of money each trip. Now I don't feel so warm and fuzzy about coming here. It's a big risk.

KUL had a 90 day VISA waiver on entry, as many as you like as long as you're out for a month between (long term) visits.
Seems a bit of a waste to give me 90 days when I only usually spend 6-8hrs there.
Time for the bus to town, a meal in the mall, then a bus back to the airport.
Malaysia as an entry point to Thailand.
